Rabbi’s Ramblings Tammuz/Av 5778

Dear Chevrei,

Mazel tov to our Congregants of the Year, Steve and Gail Magnus! Devoted and generous

friends, perpetual worker-bees who shoulder the wheel with cheerful countenances, and

hard-working parents who set a fine example for their children and grandchildren, theirs is a

shining legacy of what it means to be members of a community. Heartfelt thanks to both of

you. And big bouquets to event chair Rose Broida, her husband Greg Broida, Laura

Wolfe, Irvin Pike, and to all of you who participated in and otherwise supported our celebra-

tion. Thank you for making the evening a success!

June was an amazing month, and though we are deep into summer (and I will be back at

Camp Newman as you read this), July holds its own promise. Look out for our next Rosh

Hodesh program on Sunday, July 22; “Chardonnay Shabbat” on the 20th,

and quite possibly

more bagels and schmear with your Torah Talk on July 21 – they were quite the hit last

month!

On a far more serious note: as I write, history is repeating itself. Children are being forcibly

torn from their parents, as families seek amnesty in flight for their very lives.

This is not “loving the stranger.” This is not brotherly love. This is not how those created in

the Divine Image ought to treat one another.

If, heaven forfend, this horrific practice has not stopped, and if families remain cruelly sepa-

rated by the time you read these lines, here are some things we can do and some organiza-

tions we can support (list courtesy of slate.com):

The ACLU - litigating this policy in California. • Al Otro Lado - a binational organization that works to offer legal services to deportees and migrants in Tijuana, Mexico, including deportee parents whose children remain in the U.S.

• CARA—a consortium of the Catholic Legal Immigration Network, the American Immigration Council, the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services, and the American Immigration Lawyers Association—provides legal services at family detention centers.

• The Florence Project - an Arizona project offering free legal services to men, women, and unaccompanied children in immigration custody.

• Human Rights First - national organization with roots in Houston also seeking help from lawyers.

• Kids in Need of Defense works to ensure that kids do not appear in immigration court with-out representation, and to lobby for policies that advocate for children’s legal interests.

• The Legal Aid Justice Center - a Virginia-based center providing unaccompanied minors legal services and representation.

• Pueblo Sin Fronteras is an organization that provides humanitarian aid and shelter to mi-grants on their way to the U.S.

• RAICES - the largest immigration nonprofit in Texas offering free and low-cost legal ser-vices to immigrant children and families.

• The Texas Civil Rights Project - seeking “volunteers who speak Spanish, Mam, Q’eqchi’ or K’iche’ and have paralegal or legal assistant experience.”

• Together Rising is another Virginia-based organization that’s helping provide legal assis-tance for 60 migrant children who were separated from their parents and are currently de-tained in Arizona.

• The Urban Justice Center’s Asylum Seeker Advocacy Project is working to keep families together.

• Women’s Refugee Commission advocates for the rights and protection of women, children, and youth fleeing violence and persecution.

• Finally, ActBlue has aggregated many of these groups under a single button. I hope and pray that this information is unnecessary. Even if it is, we know there will be oth-er work to be done to rebuild our society, and to restore civility, acceptance and love, bim’heirah b’yameinu – speedily, in our day. L’shalom uliv’racha, Rabbi Cheryl Rosenstein

President Elliott Magnus Perspectives

Wow! What an event and what an honor. My parents were nominated to be Congregants of the

year, and the event held at Luigi’s banquet hall was incredible. The atmosphere, service, food,

friends, family and music made it such a special moment for Steve and Gail, they were tickled

pink. The night holds a special place for me as well, I have heard about parents being overcome

with pride for their children, I can speak for my sister and I that we felt so proud on that evening.

I would like to give special thanks to Rose and Greg Broida, Laura Wolfe, and Irvin Pike who

helped nominate, plan, set-up, decorate, and coordinate the whole event. They did a great job

of taking input from my folks, and making it an event that they enjoyed. The following day getting

a chance to visit with family, some who even came from out of state to be there, all felt is was

‘Class A all the way!’

I would explain the Congregant of the year to friends that were invited who are not members of

the temple, asking what the award was for. They would ask, what my parents did so special this

year for them to earn this honor. I would let them know this is not a M.V.C. (most valuable con-

gregant) award, which is given on a year by year basis. This award is closer to a lifetime

achievement type of award that is given over many years of dedication to the synagogue.

After giving this explanation, I thought of all of the members we have who are so deserving of

the award. Temple Beth El thrives because of the hard work, and time commitments of so many

for so many years. Yes my parents were honored, and as I joked that evening it was not nepo-

tism that got them the award, but so many every year could have the same distinction.

I want to thank all of you, all of our members are congregants of the year. Without every contri-

bution small or large of time, sweat, ideas, input, and presence, Temple Beth El could not sur-

vive. I like to think that we recognize this by having our own party every week, Oneg Shabbat. I

know this is a celebration in honor of the Sabbath, but we also get to recognize each other for

accomplishments, share a laugh, buy from the gift shop, and agree to participate in a future

function all while wine is being served and goodies are on the table.

Thank you again! From the Magnus family, a proud son, and temple president. Everyone’s con-

tributions have not been overlooked and are much appreciated. I look forward to the time when

you are singled out for your efforts and we can celebrate you the individual for the night. In the

meantime let’s celebrate all of us every Friday night!

Jewish tradition prescribes that a meal be

provided for the family following the burial

of a family member. To that end the

Caring Committee of Temple Beth El is

prepared to provide a Meal of Condolence

for temple families who experience the

loss of a loved one. Please consider

making a donation in memory of your

loved one to the Caring Committee so that

we may continue to provide this Mitzvah to

others!

Thank you,

Vivian Gonzales

Marsha Parr

When you make a donation to the temple honoring someone, sending condolences, or wishing someone well, Charlotte Abrams, Tribute Chairperson, will mail a tribute card to the recipient in your name. After you have sent your donation to the temple, notify her of the name, address of the recipient and to which fund the donation was made.
