HEADLINES» The Owls recently won four straight before having that streak snapped with a loss at Penn on Oct. 9. Temple lost again in its most recent game, getting edged 3-2 at BIG EAST foe Villanova on Oct. 15.» On Friday, Oct. 7, Temple upset No. 13 Old Dominion by a score of 2-1 in overtime at Howarth Field. Freshman Maddie Lilliock made nine saves, and junior Rachael Mueller scored the OT game-winner. Both players were named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for their efforts.» Mueller is the Owls’ leading scorer with nine goals this season, and three of those have been game-winning goals includ-ing two in overtime (at Sacred Heart, vs. No. 13 ODU).» The Owls’ first two wins in the streak included their their first shutout, a 2-0 victory against Holy Cross on Oct. 2. It was also the first career shutout for Lilliock, who currently ranks seventh in NCAA Division I with 7.40 saves per game.» Temple was picked to finish fourth of eight teams in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches Poll, and will need to match that pick or better to earn a berth in the BIG EAST Tournament the Owls will host Nov. 4 and 6.» Temple field hockey recently raised $1,509 for the Go4TheGoal Foundation’s Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer initiative, which strives to improve the lives of children battling cancer.» Lilliock was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on Sept. 19 after strong performances vs. Providence and Monmouth. She tied her season high with 11 saves against the Friars, and added eight against the Hawks. Lilliock’s 106 total saves rank second among all players in the league.» Temple field hockey celebrated the grand opening of Howarth Field on Sept. 2 when the Owls hosted No. 18 Penn State. The field is named in recognition of a $500,000 gift from field hockey alum Cherifa (Nouri) Howarth and her husband, Greg.» The Owls play 11 of their 18 regular-season games at Howarth Field in 2016. Friday’s game is the second-to-last of those, and Temple will honor its four seniors for Senior Day against Lafayette at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 30.» Four of Temple’s losses have come to teams now ranked in the top 10 as of the Oct. 18 NFHCA Coaches Poll (No. 1 UConn, No. 3 Syracuse, No. 6 Penn State and No. 8 Delaware).» Coming off an 8-13 season and a second-straight appearance in the BIG EAST Championship game, Temple has a new look in 2016 after the loss of 10 seniors to graduation. » Freshman Becky Gerhart has notched six defensive saves to tie for third among all players in NCAA Division I, while senior Ali Meszaros has three defensive saves and is tied for 15th. SCOUTING QUINNIPIACThe Bobcats have gone just 4-11 overall, but have earned three of those wins in BIG EAST play to tie for third in the conference stand-ings. Quinnipiac lost 2-1 in overtime to Holy Cross on Oct. 18, but had previously won back-to-back games including a 3-2 overtime win at home against No. 19 Old Dominion on Oct. 14.

Graduate student and forward Savanna Reilly leads Quinnipiac with eight goals and 20 total points, and is tied for the team lead with four assists along with freshman forward Ines Ruiz Martinez.

Quinnipiac is in its first season in the BIG EAST, coming from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference where the Bobcats shared the MAAC regular season title last year before finishing as runner-up in the conference tournament. Temple and Quinnipiac are meeting for the first time in program history on Friday.

INAUGURAL SEASON ON HOWARTH FIELDThe 2016 season is the inaugural year for Temple field hockey’s new stadium. The Owls are playing for the first time on Howarth Field at the brand new Temple Sports Complex, and had a grand opening celebration at their home opener against Penn State on Friday, Sept. 2. The new complex also serves as the home for la-crosse, men’s and women’s soccer, and women’s track & field.

The $22 million project, started in September 2015, features two playing fields. The space for field hockey and lacrosse, at the south-ern end of the property by 13th Street and Girard Avenue, is named Howarth Field in recognition of a $500,000 gift from former field hockey student-athlete Cherifa Howarth, ‘98, and her husband, Greg.

MUELLER SHINES IN CLUTCH TIMEJunior Rachael Mueller leads Temple with nine goals so far in 2016, and has scored three of the Owls’ five game-winning goals (senior Katie Foran has the other two). All three of Mueller’s game-winners came in Temple’s recent streak of four wins in a row, with two of those goals coming in overtime. Mueller scored the OT game-winner in a 3-2 victory at Sacred Heart on Sept. 25, and also scored the OT winner in a 2-1 upset of No. 13 Old Domin-ion on Oct. 7.

TEMPLE TO HOST 2016 BIG EAST TOURNAMENTTemple’s first season on Howarth Field is coming with a big re-sponsibility, as the Owls will serve as hosts for the 2016 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship. The semifinals are set for 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4, with the championship game set for 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6. All games will be broadcast by the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) through FoxSportsGo.com and the FoxSportsGo app.

The Owls last hosted a conference tournament in 2010 when they were members of the Atlantic 10 Conference. Temple has ad-vanced to its conference tournament in each of the last 13 years in-cluding all three BIG EAST Tournaments since joining the league as an associate member in 2013. The Owls have earned a spot in the championship game two years in a row, falling to UConn in both.

TOUGH LINEUP FOR TEMPLE IN 2016As of the NFHCA Top 20 Coaches Poll for Oct. 18, four of Temple’s opponents were nationally ranked. The Owls have faced five op-ponents ranked at the time of the game, including four still in the Top 10- No. 2 Syracuse (now No. 3), No. 18 Penn State (now No. 6), No. 10 Delaware (now No. 8), and No. 3 UConn (now No. 1). Temple also beat then-No. 13 Old Dominion on Oct. 7. According to fieldhockeycorner.com, the Owls’ schedule is the eighth-toughest in Division I.

TEMPLE UNIVERSITY FIELD HOCKEYDEFENSIVELY-MINDEDWith six defensive saves so far in 2016, freshman Becky Ger-hart is tied for third among all players in NCAA Division I, while senior Ali Meszaros is tied for 15th with three defensive saves. With 12 defensive saves as a team, the Owls rank third in the nation. Freshman Maddie Lilliock’s 7.40 saves per game rank seventh in the nation, and the Owls’ 8.27 saves per game rank eighth.

TEMPLE FIELD HOCKEY WINS FOUR STRAIGHTAfter starting the season at 1-8 overall, the Owls bounced back to win four straight in a two-week span. An overtime win at Sacred Heart on Sept. 25 got the momentum going, and Tem-ple followed that up with its first BIG EAST win on Sept. 30 by a score of 4-1 against Georgetown. Freshman Maddie Mer-ton scored twice in that victory, while junior Rachael Mueller tapped in the game-winning second goal.

Two days later the Owls won again, recording their first shut-out of the season in a 2-0 win against visiting Holy Cross. Senior Katie Foran notched both a goal and an assist, while freshman goalkeeper Maddie Lilliock made three saves for her first career shutout. Lilliock posted five saves in the Georgetown win, and was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for her efforts.

The last win in the streak was the biggest, as the Owls upset No. 13 Old Dominion 2-1 in overtime at Howarth Field on Oct. 7. Lilliock made nine saves, and Mueller once again came up with the overtime game-winning goal.

OWLS EDGE SACRED HEART IN OVERTIMEWith just under a minute remaining in the first overtime peri-od, junior Rachael Mueller scored the game-winning goal for Temple in a 3-2 victory at Sacred Heart on Sept. 25. It was the Owls’ second overtime contest in their last four games, but this time it ended in Temple’s favor thanks to Mueller, who scored two goals including the dagger when she spun around in the circle and found an opening to get the ball past Sacred Heart’s Emily Degennaro.

“Obviously to snap a five-game losing streak feels really good,” said Temple head coach Marybeth Freeman. “We made things a little more difficult for ourselves than we needed to, but I was really happy to see how that final play developed. Rachael has been doing a really good job in practice, stay-ing diligent and gaining confidence. We had a great passing combination leading into the final goal, and Rachael was able to execute on the reverse as the goalkeeper came out and challenged her.”

Also scoring for Temple in the win was senior Katie Foran. The Owls were down 1-0 from the eighth minute to the 50th min-ute, but then scored twice in a seven-minute span.

OWLS LOSE OT HEARTBREAKER IN BIG EAST OPENERAfter an impressive late comeback for Temple against Provi-dence on Sept. 16, the game ended in heartbreak for the Owls who lost 3-2 in overtime in their BIG EAST opener. Temple trailed by two with just over five minutes left in regulation before tying the game with back-to-back goals. With 5:07 remaining in regulation, junior Rachael Mueller scored on a rebounded shot and save to put Temple on the board. After a Providence timeout, freshman Maddie Merton wasted little time in scoring the game-tying goal, sending a perfect long ball in from the far right of the circle.

Temple had two more penalty corners and dominated offen-sively in the last four minutes, but Providence’s defense kept the game tied through the end of regulation. After 10 minutes of extra time, Providence’s Adrienne Houle chipped in a shot that deflected off Lilliock’s foot and into the goal for the win.

OWLS UPSET 13TH-RANKED OLD DOMINIONFor the second year in a row, Temple pulled off an upset against nationally ranked Old Dominion, this year topping the No. 13 Monarchs 2-1 in overtime at Howarth Field on Oct. 7.

The win was the fourth in a row for the Owls, who got an im-pressive nine saves from freshman goalkeeper Maddie Lilliock. Adding to the save total of 11 for Temple were freshmen Becky Gerhart and Kathryn Edgar with one defensive save apiece in an all-around outstanding backfield effort for the Owls.

Junior and leading scorer Rachael Mueller came up with her third game-winning goal of the season, this time doing it in dramatic fashion in the seventh minute of overtime. The Owls got their other goal from redshirt junior Sarah Keer early in the contest.

The victory marked the first for Temple against a ranked oppo-nent so far this season. The Owls’ strength of schedule, ranked eighth in the nation, has seen them play four teams in the Top 10 already this year.

“I think this win had a lot to do with our belief and our confi-dence,” said Temple head coach Marybeth Freeman. “We’ve had some tough, adverse situations early in the season and we’ve been saying ‘keep chipping away, keep chipping away.’ I’m really happy that we found the grit that we needed today to get the result that we knew we could get. We really put our belief into action against a really strong opponent in Old Do-minion. I couldn’t be more proud of the team and how they were able to execute what we needed to do today.”

TEMPLE PICKED FOURTH IN THE BIG EASTTemple field hockey has been picked to finish fourth of eight teams in the 2016 BIG EAST Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll. Three-time defending conference champion UConn has been unanimously selected to defend its title.

The Huskies also garnered the BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year honor in forward Charlotte Veitner, while UConn midfielder Anna Middendorf and Liberty back Serena Barr were selected as Preseason Co-Defensive Players of the Year. The Huskies collected all seven eligible first-place votes for a total of 49 points from the leagues’ head coaches, who were not allowed to vote for their own players or teams.

Conference newcomer Liberty collected 40 points to claim second place in the coaches’ poll, earning the remaining first-place vote. Old Dominion followed in third with 39 points while Temple rounded out the top four with 30 points. They were followed by Providence with 25, Villanova with 19, Quinnipiac with 13 and Georgetown with nine.

BIG EAST DIGITAL NETWORK AT HOWARTH FIELD The BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) was on hand to broad-cast Temple field hockey’s conference opener against Provi-dence on Friday, Sept. 16, and will be back for the BIG EAST Field Hockey Championships hosted by Temple on Nov. 4 and 6. The Owls will host a conference tournament for the first time in six years, as Temple hosted the Atlantic 10 Tournament back in 2010.

TEMPLE STORMS BACK IN FIRST VICTORY OF 2016Trailing 2-0 at halftime against La Salle on Sept. 4, Temple’s backs were against the wall for its hopes of grabbing victory number one in the 2016 season. Senior Katie Foran got things going for the Owls early in the second half with her first goal, and junior Rachael Mueller followed with a second to tie the game in the 49th minute. With just over eight minutes left, Foran scored the game-winner to complete the comeback and give the Owls the win. Freshman goalkeeper Maddie Lilliock made 10 saves, while senior Ali Meszaros and freshman Becky Gerhart both tallied defensive saves.

Marybeth Free-man, a five-time NCAA Division I champion as a play-er and coach, was hired as the head field hockey coach of Temple University on March 10, 2015. In Freeman’s

debut season, the Owls made a second consecutive appearance in the BIG EAST Tournament Final before falling to two-time defending national champion and second-ranked UConn. The end of the season saw a five-game win streak for Temple prior to the confer-ence championship game. The run showed what the Owls were capable of, starting with a 1-0 upset of #12 Old Dominion on Oct. 20. Freeman had four Long-streth/NFHCA All-Region selections, four All-BIG EAST selections and a Longstreth/NFHCA All-American in her first season at Temple. Off the field, Freeman’s Owls earned the BIG EAST Team Academic Excellence Award in field hockey for a second year in a row, and 20 of her student-ath-letes were named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team. Freeman came to Temple after spending five seasons as the head field hockey coach for Columbia University, and was previously an assistant coach at the University of Maryland for seven seasons, winning three national championships with the Terps.

After lead-ing Columbia to 12 wins in 2014, tying for the second-most in program history, Freeman was named the Ivy League Coach of the Year. Her 2014 squad fin-ished with a re-cord of 12-5, and junior midfielder Christina Freibolt was named Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year as well as being named to the All-Region First Team and All-America Third Team. Freeman’s tenure at Columbia included a 10-win season in her first as head coach, and a pair of nine-win seasons in 2011 and 2012. The Lions’ schedules were among the most difficult in the nation in 2013-14. She leaves Columbia after producing seven NFHCA All-Re-gion selections over her five years with the program. While at Maryland, Freeman played an integral role in the team’s national titles in 2005, 2006 and 2008. After three seasons as an assistant coach, Free-man was promoted to associate head coach in 2007. The Terps also won three ACC titles in her time on staff, in 2005, 2008 and 2009. Among other responsibili-ties, Freeman was tasked with developing the Terps’ defense and goalkeeping unit. Three-time All-American

Kathryn Mason led the nation in goals against average twice under Freeman’s guidance, and was the first ever Terp goalkeeper to be honored as a First Team All-American. Freeman has also served as the head goalkeep-ing and defense coach for the US Field Hockey High Performance Mid-Atlantic Region, in addition to work-ing with the US Field Hockey Futures program. She is a 2003 graduate of Old Dominion Universi-ty, and helped the Lady Monarchs win national titles in 1998 and 2000. The four-year starter also led her team to a Colonial Athletic Association title in each year of her collegiate career. In addition to her success on the field, Freeman excelled in the classroom as she was a four-year NFHCA Academic All-American. Freeman earned a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education from ODU in 2003, and earned her master’s in education from Maryland in 2008.
