GUEST COLUMNIST KAREN CEPPOS, CHAIR of the RITUAL COMMMITTEE

Prayer is alive and well at Temple Sinai. In December the Ritual Committee host-

ed a Worship Forum to discuss prayer and worship. Every mem-ber of the congregation received a phone call from one of the com-mittee members inviting them to attend. About 30 people came for a lively discussion focusing on the meaning of prayer, the communal aspect of prayer and worshipping together in the sanctuary.

People shared a variety of views about the nature of per-sonal prayer: prayer is personal communication with G-d; prayer is what is in our hearts that needs to be released and cannot be verbal-

ized; prayer is the mindfulness of the blessings of life; and prayer is listening to the small still voice within.

Asking people to talk about the times when they pray revealed that some pray daily; others pray on arising in the morning, to give thanks and express gratefulness. Many felt that is hard to pray when they are angry and is hard to understand how G-d can allow bad things to happen. One congregant put it this way: “Do I pray to G-d or forget G-d in times of distress?”

Talking about the relationship between worship and prayer was insightful. Connecting with the en-ergy of others, while reciting com-munal prayers, is a draw for many. Outdoor services, like Tashlich on Rosh HaShanah, provide the oppor-tunity for some to feel connected to the greater universe. Others talked about feeling support from

the community in the sanctuary, being touched the knowledge of the joys and sorrows experienced by fellow worshipers, and the im-portance of silent prayer time in the service.

One of the things we heard from almost everyone is that music is a very important compo-nent of their communal worship experience. Therefore, we want to expand participation in our services: with more musicians and singers; and by the congregation as a whole. We will also be plan-ning some special musical Shabbat services in the near future.

We also learned that feeling connected to the greater Sinai community is critical to all and so we will be working on making sure that everyone feels welcome and included at Temple Sinai.

From the First Vice President

Jake –

THANK

YOU!

Due to personal reasons, Jake Margolis resigned on February 7, 2011, as

Bikur Holim ~ Visiting the Sick

I n Jewish tradition, it is a mitzvah to visit those who are sick. This includes visiting patients in the hospital, a rehabilitation center, or a

nursing home; it also includes visiting the home-bound and making phone calls.

Rabbi Appleby makes bikkur holim visits and

phone calls, but can only do so if she knows that someone is ill or is in the hospital. Due to HIPAA patient privacy laws, the only time a hospital will inform us about a congregant is if the patient lists Temple Sinai as his/her congregation.

If you, a loved one, or a friend, would like Rabbi Appleby to make a bikkur cholim visit or phone call, please let Rabbi Appleby know. Call the Temple offi ce at 775-747-5508.

2nd Annual Temple Sinai Religious School UN-FUNDRAISER

Introducing our 2nd Annual Temple Sinai Religious School UN-Fundraising Event!

With this (un)fundraiser, you have the opportunity to give a gift to our Religious School fundraising program. The best news is…we are not asking you to buy anything, sell anything, bake anything, or count orders! Instead of expending all that time and energy for a fundraiser from which we would only receive a portion of the proceeds, we have a program where 100% of the money goes to fund programs and projects for Temple Sinai children.

Instead of spending hours and hours working and planning, just write a check. Your total donation will go to the school, and you can use the rest of your time to do something you enjoy. Pick your favorite non-event(s) and send your check to the Temple Sinai Religious School UN-Fundraiser.

I am so tired of selling (and buying) chocolate bars and the guilt associated with eating them that I’ll gladly send in $18instead.

Rather than collecting, schlepping, and turning in aluminum cans for recycling, I’ll give $36 instead.

Here is my $48 entry fee for the “Zero-K “race. I would rather sit on my sofa and nurse my pulled leg muscle.

I would rather send $64 than go to a fashion show for clothes that I will never wear anyway.

While I love black-tie events, our tuxedo and evening gown are at the cleaners, so here is $82instead.

Based on busy calendar and latest budget analysis, I am able to support to the tune of $__________.

I would like to host an Oneg in Religious School’s honor, but I would rather not host alone. I can share the honor for $____________.

EN’S CLUB

First and foremost, I need to be repetitive and join the rest of the Men’s Club membership in thanking all of our volunteer members,

whether it’s the speakers, the meals, or just stepping forward to volunteer to help our Temple.

Our February Mens Club speaker was Dr. Osca Alvarez Gila, Visiting Professor at the Center for Basque Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno, College of Liberal Arts. He has a PhD from the University of the Basque Country in history and his special interest recently has been the migration of Basques to the Americas. Chef Jane prepared the breakfast with a Spanish fl air specially in honor of our guest.

Our speaker for March, Bob Goodman, is one on a VERY short list of speakers we have asked to come back for phase 2. Bob spent his career in public land management with the Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), after obtaining a BS in Forestry. Part of his career with the BLM was as Audio/Visual Specialist for its programs throughout Nevada. His Personal pursuit as a free lance writer and photographer was followed concurrently with his job wit the Federal Government.

On Sunday, March 6 at 9am, Bob will present “I, Witness”, a program that deals with the various aspects of wildlife photography, including ethics, equipment, methods, and results. It was developed for the series of programs I did for the Washoe County Library System, and has proved popular, es-pecially with the advent of digital camera use.

In April our own Judy Schumer will be doing a show-and-tell about the Jews of Shanghai.

Special Advance Notice: the MEN’S CLUB SABBATH SERVICE will be on Friday Evening April 8. Save the date!

The Temple Sinai Yiddish Club

The Temple Sinai Yiddish Club was founded six years ago and is still going strong. Led by one of Temple Sinai’s founders, Ethel Jaff e, it

meets once a month at Ethel’s house, where those attending share coff ee, rugelach, and “yiddishkeit.” Some of the members speak fl uent Yiddish, some speak a little Yiddish, and others are eager to hear the language spoken and learn words and expres-sions. While sitting around the dining room table, the group sings Yiddish songs, tells Yiddish stories, and tries to keep the language alive. Over the years, the club has done presentations about Yiddish and Yiddish culture at the Osher Lifelong Learning In-stitute and at Temple Sinai. They have also sung at various Sinai programs. Yiddish “laipt” (lives) in Reno and the club’s members are “glicklekh” (very happy) to be part of the “kriezel” (club).

REMINDER: By Board action, on recommendation of the Ritual Committee, pork and shellfi sh may not be served at Temple Sinai. This includes any products containing either pork or shellfi sh; so, do check, carefully, the contents of what you might be serving at Onegs, meetings, receptions, etc. Also be careful to remember those possible “common” foods that are indeed included in these restrictions (pepperoni pizza is one good example!).

T he Temple S inai Book Club is changing it’s

schedule and reorganizing as it searches for new leadership. In the meantime, for meeting infor-mation, dates, and places, and to fi nd out the current book being read, please email Judy Schumer at [email protected].

Dear Friends,We’ve decided to put regu-

lar monthly Saturday night Israeli dancing on hiatus for a while. So we are canceling the tentatively scheduled Saturday Israeli dances over the next several months.

We’d like to thank every-one who came to dance on Saturdays. Don’t forget that we are still Israeli dancing ev-ery Tuesday night at Temple Sinai from 7-9pm.

We’d be glad to try to plan a special Israeli dance event, with anyone who has an idea for the right occasion.

Happy dancing!-John Louie
