If you have seen me with a smile on my face

recently, then it is because many of those

associated with Temple Sinai have recently

visited Israel. Eric and Julie Littmann went

on their first ever trip. Les and Barbara

Gilbert visited family on their annual

voyage. Rickie Orzen finally got to Israel

with her son Mike after having planned a

trip for years. Ilana Shapiro visited on a

Jewish Women’s Renaissance Project tour.

Matt Guzman and his fiance Sarah

purchased in Jerusalem, among other things,

their ketubah. If I have missed anyone, I apologize but this has been just in the last

month!

As much as I might preach on Israel and our connection to the land and the people,

nothing can compare to the actual experience. As much as I explain how Israelis are

our brothers and sisters, even though thousands of miles separate us, it only hits

home when you witness what Ilana witnessed at the Kotel, the Western Wall, in

Jerusalem: a unit of soldiers singing “Am Yisrael Chai” and dancing with civilians as

they engaged in their training. It only becomes real when you are like Les and Barbara,

sharing a meal with their children and grandchildren in the house where their family

lives as Israeli citizens. It is a concrete experience when, like Matt and Sarah, you plan

a Jewish wedding while walking around a Jewish country, like Eric and Julie, when you

reflect on years of service to the Jewish People while walking through a living

testament to their fortitude.

Many people, particularly in the light of terrible events like the shooting attack in Tel

Aviv, ask me about the danger of visits to Israel. I say I can never give them a perfect

guarantee but they would still need to have some very bad fortune to be in the wrong

place at the wrong time and the welcome and gratitude they will get from Israelis will

be memorable. So, I know it’s expensive and time-consuming to get to Israel but, if

you made it, thank you for strengthening your relationship with the mitzvah of ahavat

tzion, loving Israel, and thank you, on that basis, for making me very happy.

President’s Message

Dear congregants; I want to thank all of your for allowing me to serve as President of Temple Sinai. It is an honor and a privilege. When I retired a little over 5 years ago, I had no idea what I was going to do to keep busy. Within a year of retirement I became involved at Temple Sinai. I don’t know if I should thank or blame Rick Hollander for that. The jury is still out. I will let you know in two years. In all seriousness, both Eileen and I want to thank Rick and Donna for being our friends and guiding us as we became involved at Temple Sinai. I have served on many non-profit boards; however, never a religious institution. There is a definite learning curve. I must thank Julie Littmann for helping me understand the religious aspects of Temple Sinai. I will miss working with Julie on a day to day basis. Eileen and I are very lucky to have good friends such as Julie and Eric. So, why do I need a part time job with no pay or benefits and a lot of aggravation? This is a question that many people have asked me and I have asked myself. The truth, is I don’t! Having said that, I have accepted the position of President. I am involved at Temple Sinai because I enjoy working with the clergy, staff and Board. I also feel that Temple Sinai is unlike any Temple I have belonged to in the past. This is a different place. The service and music are not what I was used to, but I am able to enjoy learning and appreciating the new liturgy. Temple Sinai is the first shul I have belonged to where I feel better when I leave than when I walked in. Because of that, I am willing to work to keep Temple Sinai moving forward. Temple Sinai is not only my Temple or Rabbi Cohen’s Temple or the Board’s Temple. Temple Sinai belongs to the Congregational Family. If you want Temple Sinai to grow and prosper you must become engaged. Step forward, don’t wait for someone else to do it. The majority of our congregation is NOT engaged and this is a problem. My goal for the next year is to get the congregation engaged. If this happens, the majority of our problem areas will become non-existent. How do you become engaged? Get your friends to join Temple Sinai. Volunteer for a committee and become active on that committee. This is the way most of the officers and Board members of the Temple started. Support events by attending. There are a core of members that attend events. We need more participation by the congregation. Donate money. Temple Sinai is a religious institution, but it is also a business. Like any other business, it needs money to pay its bills. Over the past two years we have made many changes to increase revenue and reduce expenses. It is your turn to help. Donate for lifecycle events, underwrite programs, contribute to the sustainability campaign and many other areas. Please contact either Rabbi Cohen or myself if you have any questions. Remember, complaining is not a strategy. Become part of the solution. Shalom Les Sherman Temple Sinai President

SUMMER READING

The importance of summer reading has long been discussed in research, as it shows that students who read over the summer do better in school in the fall. Students who do not read over the summer demonstrate aca-demic loss in the fall. Moreover, 8 out of 10 studies indicate students who read for fun outperformed those who did not. The recommended number of books is 5 books over the summer, which can prevent academic loss. It is noted that by the end of 6th grade, children who do not read over the summer are two years behind other children. So what can we do to make sure that our children are ready? Stress the importance of summer reading with your

child. Make reading exciting; don’t think of it as a chore. Create a reading list. Create a no TV or electronic game time during part of

each day. Join a summer reading program at your local library. Let your child choose his/her own books. Keep a supply of reading materials around the house. Ask your child questions about the books s/he is read-

ing. Read a book to your child. Listen to your child read to you. Pick a favorite author or series and read all the books. Listen to books on tape while traveling. Model reading by simply reading a book next to your

children. Many websites will recommend wonderful books for Sum-mer of 2016, and one of the most popular websites is www.best-books.publishersweekly.com, where publishers recommend the best books in fiction, mysteries, memoirs, romance, comics, kids books and more. I will plan to start my summer reading with “Daring Great-ly” by Brene Brown, focusing on the courage to be vulnera-ble… Have a wonderful Summer, Dr. Sharon Knafo Education Director

Now that summer is here, everything is a lot quieter at Temple Sinai -- at least for now! In early June, I went to Wis-consin to take part in a pro-fessional Jewish music festi-val, Hava Nashira. It was my first time attending, and it was a deeply moving musical

experience. The 300 participants included song leaders, educators, Rabbis, Cantors and, like me, Cantorial Soloists. Led by a wonderful faculty of teachers and composers, we sang together for five days, learned new music, and shared ideas to use in our jobs back home. I really enjoyed working with composer and Cantor Jeff Klepper of Massachusetts, who has written many of the songs you know from our Shabbat service. Another fa-vorite part of the festival was hearing songs played in Israel at an innovative Shabbat service that more than 1,000 people attend every Friday. The tunes were similar to musical theater and Israeli pop. I also realized that we are very lucky at Temple Sinai. Many leaders in their community are trying to find ways to get their community to sing together, but we already love to do that. Warmly, Heather

Bar Mitzvah of Brandon Kase Retreat VI at Mt. Charleston

Brandon Reid Kase will be called to the Torah on July 30th , 2016 as a Bar Mitzvah. Brandon is going into eighth grade at Sig Rogich Middle school where he is a member of the National Junior Honors Society in which he demonstrates excellence in leadership, academic achievement and community service. His favorite subject is accelerated math and he has always been

gifted in this subject, scoring a perfect score on the State Criterion Referenced Test in both math and science. In addition, he is a strong and creative writer and has been selected as Student of The Month twice. Brandon has a passion for both tackle and flag football and has played for many years. His favorite position to play is Center and he and his team have enjoyed several championship trophies. He also is in advanced band and loves to play the clarinet and has enjoyed being in several performances. Brandon also loves to travel to the beaches in California, Disneyland and on cruises. He is having a blast this summer attending sports camp, swimming, and hanging out with his friends. Brandon is extremely kind, compassionate, has a high sense of integrity and always looks for ways to help his friends and family. His smile lights up a room and he has a wonderful sense of humor. Brandon is looking forward to celebrating his Bar Mitzah with his mom Debby, his dad Scott, his sister Serena and many of his relatives coming in from Chicago as well as his fantastic friends. We are all enormously proud and happy to celebrate this most special milestone occasion with him!

Our s ix th

Annual Retreat

was the best

yet. The retreat

took place

from Friday

evening, June

3rd through

S u n d a y

morning, June

5th, at the Mt.

C h a r l e s t o n

Resort.

Although last year's Retreat was also held at the same

place, this year's retreat had more to offer both spiritually

and educationally. Families participated in art projects,

games and activities provided for children of all ages. The

Retreat Committee did a terrific job of creating a program

that allowed everyone to have both a fun and a

meaningful experience. The committee chaired by Jackie

and Shel Kolner consisted of Nancy and Joel Shinder,

Aimee Knox, Nancy Sherman, Eileen Sherman, Ricki and

Howard Greenspon, Nancy Pendleton, Isaac Cohen,

Brian Williams and Les Gilbert.

Most of the participants arrived at the Resort in the late

afternoon on Friday, in time for a Shabbat dinner.

Because Rabbi Cohen officiated at the Friday Night Live

service at the Temple, the Shabbat service at the Resort

did not start until the Rabbi

arrived at 8:30. To fill the

time between the dinner

and service, six groups were

formed, with each group

creating a jingle about

Temple Sinai, with their

original words put to six

different "oldies". The

results presented after the

service were quite clever

and entertaining, although

none of the groups were

asked to do an encore!

Page 7: Temple Sinai Shofar - July 2016 Edition

7 July 2016

On Saturday morning, a hike with the Rabbi preceded breakfast. After Shabbat morning service and Torah study, Rabbi Cohen presented a 2-part series on "Living a Life That Matters”. Break-out sessions on Dylan, Marley and the Torah, on Islam and Its History, and doing Chair Yoga were held and everyone got to go to two out of three. Dr. Sharon Knafo, the head of both Temple Sinai's Religious School and early childhood ed-ucation school, Shenker Academy, held a session based upon a survey which had

each person rate themselves on 50 questions related to potentially stressful situations. When the results were tallied in each of five different categories, Dr. Knafo explained the meaning of each category, as well as how each person's score indicat-ed how they might react. The results were quite enlightening and led to several lively discussions. On Saturday evening, groups were formed to take part in a Jewish trivia competition. There were 40 questions, covering a wide variety of subjects, from Yiddish words and expressions to famous Jewish celebrities. The evening ended with a Havda-lah service, which took place outdoors. It was cool enough (even though it was well over 100 degrees in Las Vegas) that some congregants actually put on sweaters! After breakfast on Sunday morning, Rabbi Cohen, with the help of several of our congregants, gave a Virtual Tour of Jeru-salem. The Tour included slides and short videos that were taken by the Rabbi and a few members who had recently trav-elled to Israel. The final get-together on the agenda was an out-door closing ceremony to thank those who had worked so hard to make this Retreat so special, to put out the call to those who might be willing and able to head up the Retreat Committee next year, and to wish everyone a safe journey home.

From Your Sisterhood

A new year is a new beginning and with it a new administration. We want to thank all the outgoing Board members for their service and look forward to working with the new officers and Board members. At our June 12th Annual meeting we installed the Officers and Board of Directors for 2016-2017. I had the honor of being installed as

the new President of Temple Sinai’s Sisterhood. At the meeting we approved a change to our bylaws: we will be accepting non-Temple members as members of Temple Sinai’s Sisterhood. We take this opportunity to thank Tina Drago for her years of devotion and dedication to Temple Sinai’s Sisterhood. Some really “big shoes to fill”. We look forward to her continued participation in Sisterhood. Membership applications and information are on their way. Your dues, can be paid by credit card in the Sisterhood Gift Shop. The Gift Shop will be open throughout the summer, on Friday evenings before services. If you need access to the shop at any other time, during normal office hours, contact the Temple office. The Gift Shop, under the management of Barbara Berg, is constantly updating its inventory. Stop in and check us out. Should you not find that “something special”, please let Barbara know. We want to be your “go to’ place for gift items. We can provide for your “Save the Dates”, Invitations and all items for your special occasions. We are in the process of preparing the 2016-2017 calendar and once completed, copies will be forward to all members. Sisterhood is planning exciting and informative programming and some interesting projects to improve our Temple. Your thoughts and concerns are of interest to Sisterhood. If you have ideas for programs or just suggestions, please let us know. We can accomplish many great things together. I can always be reached by email at [email protected]. I look forward to meeting and working with all of you. B’shalom, Marge Nordell

[email protected]

Shalom Chaverim! Hello my friends. My first task as your “presumptive” President of Temple Sinai’s Men’s Club, is to write this Men’s Club column for the July Shofar. It is a bit unusual since I am writing this article on June 7th. The election for the new officers and Directors will not even take place until the Men’s Club’s Annual General Business Meeting, on June 12th. Therefore, I use the term “presumptive”. The new President’s term doesn’t even begin until July 1st! I may be getting ahead of myself, yet if I am writing the column for the August issue, I got the vote! If someone else is writing the August column, thank you for this service opportunity! Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, ztl, when he met up with the generation of ‘lost’ Jews in the 1960’s and 70’s in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury section, said to them; “Just give me one hour on Shabbat, just one hour to experience Shabbat.” The hope being that the experience would excite the appetite for more. Expanding on this statement and then taking from the title of the 1992 film, “Power of One”, I would like to invite the men of Temple Sinai to experience, participating, in just ONE of our many Men’s Club events, not as an attendee, but experience it as part of its organization. What do I mean? Here’s are just two examples: First, we have 52 Friday evening Shabbat services at Temple Sinai. For each service we need at least two ushers to greet fellow worshippers, hand out the Shabbat flyer, and help give out and collect the prayer books from the carts. Historically, we have about 100 members of Men’s Club. You see where I’m going! Fifty-two services x 2 ushers = 104 ‘ushering spots.’ Volunteer for JUST ONE OF THEM. Experience the ‘Power of One.’ Secondly, we try to have ten Sunday morning breakfasts (usually the second Sunday of the month) throughout the year. Volunteer for JUST ONE OF THEM by helping at the reception table, helping in the kitchen or helping set up the breakfast buffet table. Experience the ‘Power of One.’ The opportunities for mitzvot go on and on for the ‘Power of One’ concept. Other opportunities exist with High Holy Days ushering, the opening and closing activities for our Religious School, when Men’s Club has the honor of leading our congregation in Shabbat worship the Friday night of Father’s Day weekend, Saki & Sushi in the Sukkah during Sukkot, and more. tradition of giving Tzedakah are a basic part of Jewish

living. There are many forms of righteous behavior,

but giving charity to those in need is among the most

important ones. Any donation is greatly appreciated.

From Your Men’s Club Cont. from page 9

If I get to continue writing this column, I plan to highlight the

men of Temple Sinai who serve along with me as your Men’s

Club Board. Each of them has experienced the ‘Power of

One,’ and it inspired them to continue their involvement as we

help make Temple Sinai true to its saying, “Your family, your

home.”

Craig Barishman will like these next lines! There are two kinds

of energy that we all heard about in our school years, potential

and kinetic. Potential energy is energy that is ‘ready to be used,’

that is it is stored energy, waiting to be called upon. Kinetic

energy is energy in motion; when an object is put into use, its

potential energy becomes kinetic energy.

Temple Sinai’s Men’s Club has both potential and kinetic

energies. The potential comes from our members, who bring

ideas, knowledge and experience. The kinetic comes when our

members put their ideas, knowledge and experience into action.

Bring your potential energy to Temple Sinai’s Men’s Club. Help

turn it into kinetic energy and in turn be a part of a mitzvah of

helping!

Join us. Experience the ‘Power of One.’

What’s ahead in our Torah? July 1-2 Shelach Moses sent twelve scouts into the land. Only Joshua and Caleb give a positive report. G-d’s angry decree results in 38 more years in the wilderness. July 8-9 Korach Moses and Aaron’s cousin Korach question their leadership. The Kohanim and Levites manage donations for the Sanctuary. July 15-16 Chukat The laws of the red heifer. The people complain, Moses strikes the rock to bring forth water. Miriam and Aaron die, Eleazer becomes the Kohain Gadol. July 22-23 Balak Balak, King of the Moabite, asks Bilaam to curse the Israelites. Instead, he blesses them; “How goodly are your tents o’ Jacob.” July 29-30 Pinchas Pinchas is rewarded for his actions. A second census is taken. The daughters of Zelophchad speak up in defense of their rights. Josh-ua is chosen to succeed Moses.

Presented by the

Temple Sinai Ritual Committee.

Personal Tribute Cards

Have you seen the personal tribute cards? If not, they are available in our Sisterhood Gift Shop. Please stop and take a look. These cards match our standard tribute cards but are used to send personal notes. They allow you to convey your personal sentiments to family and friends while still indicating to them that a donation was made in their honor to the Temple Sinai General Fund. The cards are available in 7-packs for $36.00. They are also available by calling Dorothy Cohen (702-228-7040) or Phyllis Feigenson (973-525-7799). Talk to the ladies or stop in at the Gift Shop. You will be happy you did.

From your Ritual Committee

The Ritual Committee is your liaison to our clergy – Rabbi Malcolm Cohen and Soloist Heather Klein.

rectly to Rabbi or Heather, the Ritual Committee is the place where you will be heard.

But if you do want to register a thought, you must ‘own’ your thought. That is, you cannot make an

anonymous comment or complaint. We will respect your confidentiality, if you so choose, but we will

need a way to get back you. Talk to any member of the Ritual Committee,
