YIsrael:
In our Hearts and Minds
Israel has been in the news even more than usual lately—
and has been the subject of myriad e-mails I’ve received recently.
We have two Israel-related holidays on the Jewish calendar this month. Yom HaZikaron (Day of Re-membrance) and Yom Ha’Atzma’ut (Israel Independence Day) fall on 5 and 6 Iyar, respectively (April 19 and 20 on the secular calendar).
So, it occurred to me that it’s time to talk about Israel—a com-plex, deeply emotional, challenging, often frustrating, and divisive topic.
Historically, Israel has been the spiritual homeland of the Jewish people. For 2000 years, Jews liv-ing in the Diaspora have turned in prayer toward Jerusalem. For 2000 years, we have proclaimed L’Shana Haba’a bi’Y’rushalayim (Next Year in Jerusalem) at the end of our Passover seders and Yom Kippur N’ilah Services.
Our people’s connection to and yearning for Israel has been persis-tent throughout the centuries. The Psalmist writes: If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand wither. Let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth. And the 11th Century poet, Rabbi Judah Halevi, writes: My
heart is in the east though I am in the west.
Our feelings toward, and connections to, the modern state of Israel, however, are not so uni-form. Our relationships to Israel range from the
“Israel can do no wrong” camp to the Israel “can do no right” camp; we have nuanced and multi-faceted feelings in between the extremes, and some of us even experience total apathy.
But I’ve found that we are often afraid to voice our opinions in public or are unwilling to hear opinions that diff er from our own. In fact, this was the topic of a workshop that I attended last month at the CCAR Convention in San Francisco. It was titled “Jewish-Jewish Dialogue about the Israeli-Palestinian Con-fl ict and other Diffi cult Issues.” The purpose of the workshop was not to solve the confl ict in the middle-east, but rather how to create safe forums for us to discuss the diffi cult issues.
I love Israel. Whenever I visit, I really do feel like I’ve come home. And while I unequivocally support the right of Israel to exist as a home for the Jewish people, I am person-ally disturbed by the increasing hos-tility of the Orthodox to religious pluralism (as demonstrated by the harassment of the Women of the Wall, the request to have separate sidewalks for men and women,
and for women to be required to sit in the back of the bus on certain routes); and also by the Govern-ment’s announcement that it will build 1600 new housing units in Arab East Jerusalem. The confl icts between, and among, Jews in Israel are as deep and profound as are the confl icts between Jews and Arabs.
If you’ve never traveled to Israel, I strongly urge you to do so. It will be transformative—spiritually, emotionally, intellectually, Jewishly. Only when you are really present in Israel can you begin to understand and connect with the land, the his-tories, the politics, the peoples, the cultures, and the religions—all the contrasts. The struggles for place, for home, for consensus, for reli-gious freedom, for survival and for peace are as tangible and omnipres-ent as they are incessant.
My prayer is that our public statements about Israel, no less than our private opinions, come from places of deep love for, and commitment to, Israel, and refl ect our Jewish values. Let us also pray that Israel comes closer to realizing her hopes, dreams, and visions.
L’Shalom ~ Rabbi Appleby

Dollars, Surveys &
Changes to the Rabbinic
Discretionary Fund
A couple months ago, I wrote about the fi nancial status of Temple Sinai. At the time, us-
ing data from the end of November, we appeared to be in good fi nancial shape. However, over the last few months we have begun to incur a defi cit. This bottom-line number fl uc-tuates and could improve by the end of the fi scal year on June 30. Your Board of Trustees is always investi-gating ways in which to save money. However, I ask you to please fulfi ll your membership, religious school tuition and new-building pledges to the best of your ability. I also ask that if you are faring well during these diffi cult economic times, when some of our members are fi nding it diffi cult to contribute to the congre-gation, that you consider making an extra donation to Temple Sinai this year. Temple Sinai is here because of you and for you; don’t assume that there’s always someone else who will make that extra contribution. It is up to each of us. Over the last two and a half years I have written and spoken to you about our individual commitment to Temple Sinai. For most of us, the recommended dues
of $105 per month is less than or about what we spend on cable television and our cell phone each month. If each of our member families paid this amount, we would cover 90% of our operating expenses, not including the religious school, which is
funded by separate tuition. Again, I ask that you consider contributing a little extra this year if you can. I thank you in advance.
Not to be outdone by the fed-eral 2010 census now underway, the Board, with input from various com-mittees, is formulating a survey that you will soon receive. It is important that you complete the survey as quickly as possible. Your feedback concerning Temple Sinai will be used by the Board at a retreat in late May, prior to the annual congregational meeting. The retreat will enable the Board to step aside from administra-tive and fi nancial matters that are our focus at regular monthly meet-ings and to concentrate on longer-range and fundamental issues such as programming, membership out-reach and the nature of our religious services.
I want to thank all who attended our wonderful Passover Seder held at the Atlantis, and I particularly want to thank Marsha Cohen for all her hard work in planning the event. I also want to thank Gary and Judy Schumer for repairing our Torah mantles.
The Board is instituting a for-mal written policy concerning the Rabbinic Discretionary Fund using guidelines provided by the Union for Reform Judaism. The policy outlines how the funds may be used and how donations are to be made. In short, if you make a donation to the fund, you must make the check payable to Temple Sinai, not Rabbi Appleby, with the fund name on the subject line. Only then are contributions tax deductible and must be used by the Rabbi in accordance with the policy. The Rabbi will provide the Board with an annual accounting of how the funds were used. If you have any questions, please contact me.
I want to thank those of you who have made recent donations to Temple Sinai, as noted on our Dona-tions Page in the Sentinel. This page also notes specifi c items for which we are seeking donations. This month you will notice we are asking for donations towards the purchase of new administrative software. The new program, Rekefet, will make it far more effi cient to manage and in-tegrate our membership database, fi nancial transactions and data. The cost is about $1,200. If you would like to contribute, please make your donation to the General Fund, with Rekefet in the subject line. Thanks for your support.
Shalom,Jake

Sinai Seeking Judaica
Art
We’re in the process of beau-tifying Temple Sinai and are seeking donations of paintings, artifacts, and wall hangings that are in excellent condition. Please do not bring items to Temple Sinai, but instead contact Amy Currier fi rst at [email protected] or 348-7819. If you don’t have artwork to donate, you might consider making a donation to our fi xtures/furnishings/interiors (FFI) fund (specifying the donation is for “art and décor”) so that we may acquire new pieces or restore pieces in our current collection. Amy and the Board of Trustees will make decisions on what will be displayed. Thanks for your help.
