11. .FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENTNovember 1966

My advisors say: never single out specific individuals forthanks--someone will be overlooked--and then you are REALLY introuble.

My apologizes in advance, but 'playing safe is not my nature. My sincerest thanks to each and every one of our very hard workersfor all that they are doing for our Temple as we move from strengthto strength. But I must, and I will now, single out just a veryfew from among the many.

As this is written we have 165 members in Temple Rodef Shalom. This reflects an outstanding succes in our membership campaign, towhich many have contributed; but, the principal credit must go toMr. Armand Weiss for the outstanding effort which he put forth, andthe tremendous results which he has accomplished.

Our Religious School has, as of this writing, just under 200students, and is growing as our membership grows. Mr. Joel Novakhas organized an outstanding school of which we can all be justlyproud. We have made great strides in this area, but Joel pointsout that we are not now relaxing and collecting plaudits. Moreeffort is called for and more is being put forth, to reach ourgoal of providing our children with the best possible religiouseducation.

Our sincerest appreciation to both of these committee chair-men. However, neither can carry the task alone. With regard tomembership, each of us has an obligation--if each member will TRYto introduce one new family to our congregation, and if only 1 outof 5 joins with us, we will have passed that 200 threshold forinitiation of a building program. WE TRY HARDER,

The school needs volunte'rs to assist with the activityprogram": arts, crafts, dramatics, music, dance and the otherperipheral activities which are a signficant part of the totalcultural background which we are trying to give our children. We can only do the job with the help of the parents. Please con-tact Joel Novak or the Temple Office, and let him know that youwill help. WE TRY HARDER.

Our significant growth can also be attributed in large measureto the outstanding Public Relations program of Mrs. Harriet Epsteinand her very able committee. A truly fine job has been done inthis area and we express the appreciation of the entire congregation.

10.**3 FrflER'S EXHN 9*

We have always welcomed contributions to "Raf]ctions. Letters orarticles of general interest—informative, controversial, or inspiring, willbe eagerly received. Please mail yours to the Editor, Nan Rudin, 34424 Bia irRoad, Falls Church, 22041, before the 15th deadline, This one we are proudto print4 it was found on the table beside .1dlai Stevenson's bed. The'words were no doubt an inspiration to this great man.

"GO placidly amid the noise and haste and learn what peace there maybe in silence,......Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even thedull and ignorant; they too have their story...If you compare yourself withothers you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater andlesser persons than yourself.

"Enjoy your achievements as well as your p1ané• - Keep-interested inyour career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunesof time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full Of.trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many personsstrive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism,

"Be yourself. Especially, do not.feign affection. Neither be cynicalabout love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is asperennial as the grassi Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefullysurrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield youin sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with ijnaginings. Many fearsare born Of fatigue and lonliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be,gentle

with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees andthe stars; you have a right to be here. And 'whether or not it is clear toyou, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

"Therefore be at peace with God, 'whatever you conceive Rim to be.Aind whatever your labors and aspirations and labors in the noisy confusion oflife, keep at peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery andbroken dreams, it is still a beautiful world".
