Chapter 1 - Introduction

This is the installation and management guide for the Agent X200 appliance.

The Agent X200 is a legacy probe: while still supported by Monitor Master QM v10.4.4, it can only be updated to

v10.2.0 of the probe software. This means that it does not support any software enhancements since v10.2.0,

including support for new modems and EMUs.

You should plan to replace all your legacy probes, soon, with the much faster and more flexible Agent RTU-5

probes. Contact your TEMS sales representative for details.

The Agent X200 consists of test hardware and associated software that runs on the embedded CPU board. It is

designed for use as part of a complete Monitor Master monitoring or testing solution from InfoVista Sweden AB.

The applicable documentation therefore consists of this guide and the guides for the other components of the

system

This guide contains all the information that a customer may require to install and configure the hardware, and put

the test system into operation. For information on designing and running tests, reporting, etc, please refer to the

other user guides supplied as part of your Monitor Master solution.

Note: All safety instructions of all guides are valid.

Chapter 2 - Safety Instructions

This chapter provides safety instructions for the installation and maintenance of the Agent X200.

These general safety precautions must be observed during all phases of operation of the system. Failure to comply

with these precautions and with specific warnings elsewhere in the guides provided with the system violates

safety standards of design, manufacture and intended use of the system.

InfoVista Sweden AB assumes no liability for user failure to comply with these requirements.

Intended use The Monitor Master testing/monitoring system and its parts may only be used for the purpose and under the

conditions for which they were constructed.

The Agent X200 must be operated within the temperature range of 0oC to +40oC. For further environmental

conditions, refer to Chapter 9, Technical Data starting on page 30.

WARNING: Do not operate in explosive atmosphere.

Power supply Before connecting the Agent X200 make sure that the power supply meets its operating voltage and current

consumption specifications (refer to Technical Data).

WARNING: Use AC line cords and AC line plugs / sockets with protective earth connection only. Make sure that

the protective earth conductor is not broken, neither inside nor outside the equipment housing.

Radiation, electromagnetic interference The Agent X200 uses mobile test modules that fulfil CE requirements. These modules radiate electromagnetic

fields, like mobile phones.

WARNING: Do not operate in environments where the use of mobile phones is not allowed.

Faults, excessive stresses Do not operate the Agent X200:

if it has been stored under unfavourable conditions (e.g. temperature, humidity, dew)

if it has been transported under unfavourable conditions (e.g. temperature, humidity, dew)

Once the Agent X200 is installed in suitable conditions, allow it to acclimatize for one hour before using it.

Take the Agent X200 out of service:

if it is obviously damaged

if it doesn't work

if it has been subjected to excessive stress of any kind

In such cases, contact your local TEMS sales representative.

Maintenance and repair WARNING: Do not open the Agent X200 case: there are no user-serviceable parts inside and doing so will void

your warranty.

Repairs must be made by trained professionals only. (Also see Chapter 6.)

Anti-static measures WARNING: SIMs are static sensitive components. You must observe all the usual ESD precautions when

handling them.

In summary, when working with static-sensitive components:

Ground yourself immediately before handling them

Wear an anti-static earthing strap while handling them

Do not touch the edge contacts

Work at an anti-static workstation (recommended)

If you put a component down, place it on an anti-static mat

If storing components, place them in anti-static bags

Installation and ventilation WARNING: For safe operation please keep 5 cm free at the both sides of the appliance for proper ventilation as

well as 5mm at the bottom and top of the Agent X200.

Modems The Agent X200 houses fixed modems which cannot be changed or replaced.

Chapter 3 - The Agent X200

The Agent X200 appliance is designed to test mobile radio equipment. It can be combined with other TEMS

components to form an automated system for quality of service testing or monitoring in mobile networks.

The Agent X200 is built on a table-top chassis with an external 100-230V AC power supply unit and internal CPU

board and hard disk drive. It can be equipped with up to 2 wireless modems, with up to 2 SIM Emulators as well

as a PSTN modem, GPS unit and WLAN connectivity. Please note that the modems, GPS unit and WLAN are all

factory-fitted options that must be specified in the initial order.

Each wireless modem's air interface is connected to a separate RF connector on the rear panel.

Interfaces on the Rear Panel, from top left:

12V/6A: DC power in, connect only the supplied power adaptor

VGA: video monitor

USB: 2 USB Ports, for USB mouse, keyboard, etc

LAN: connection to LAN

LINE IN (blue): audio input

LINE OUT (green): audio output (SPK) e.g. for use with a headset

MIC (red): microphone input (MIC) e.g. for use with a headset

MOUSE (green): ps/2 connector for mouse input

KEYBOARD: ps/2 connector for keyboard input

MODEM: connector for PSTN modem

RESET: recessed reset button

RF1: SMA-F socket for MODEM1, for connecting an aerial

SIM1: SIM socket for MODEM1

RF2: SMA-F socket for MODEM2, for connecting an aerial

SIM2: SIM socket for MODEM2

The controls The only control fitted to the Agent X200 is a RESET button, on the rear panel. Press this to reboot the Agent X200

without removing the power. (The button is recessed so you may need to use a small tool, such as a pen top.)

There is no power switch; the Agent X200 can be turned off by unplugging the external DC power supply from the

socket on the rear panel, and turned on by connecting it again.

The indicators There are seven indicator LEDs on the Agent X200 Front Panel:

Power: red = power on; green = power on and all Monitor Master services running

Chapter 4 - Initial hardware configuration

The Agent X200 will normally be supplied with all modems fitted which have been ordered. This chapter describes

how to complete the hardware configuration:

Install the SIMs

Connect the antennas

Connect the phone line and audio

Connect to the LAN

Connect the power

WARNING: Do not open the Agent X200 case: there are no user-serviceable parts inside and doing so will void

your warranty.

Tools required You may require a Torque Wrench while installing the Agent X200, to fit the antennas to the SMA connectors on

the rear panel. Other tools should not be needed.

Installing the SIMs Keep a record of the modem in each slot. A Configuration Sheet is included in Appendix A for your use.

If the Agent X200 modems use local SIMs, you should install the appropriate SIMs in the SIM slots on the rear

panel.

WARNING: Make sure that the Agent X200 is powered down first (disconnect the power lead).

1. Insert the SIM card in the appropriate slot on the rear panel, contacts down, with the cutout at the front left:

Connecting the antennas The Agent X200 modems connect over-the-air by using antennas installed on the rear panel, as follows:

1. Connect your RF antenna(s) to the "RF" connectors on the rear panel, using cables with SMA type

connectors and an impedance of 50Ω. These cables may be connected or disconnected during operation (you

do not need to turn off the Agent X200). RF1 is the antenna for the lefthand module, when viewed from the

front of the case.

Note: Do not overtighten!

2. Install the antenna(s) in a suitable place for your testing.

Connecting the phone line and audio Both these steps are optional:

1. To use the PSTN modem, connect the phone (land) line to the MODEM socket on the Agent X200 rear panel

using a suitable cable. (You may need an adaptor if your phone system does not use RJ11 plugs.)

2. Optionally, connect your headset (or other audio input/output) to the LINE OUT and MIC (or LINE IN)

connectors on the rear panel. (The MIC input has a higher sensitivity.)

Connecting to the LAN The Agent X200 requires a 10/100bT network connection to connect with QM Server and other Monitor Master

servers. This may also be used to connect to the service under test.

1. Use the RJ-45 connector on the rear panel to connect to your LAN.

2. The X200 requires a fixed IP address (provided by your IT administration group) or a dynamic address

(assigned by DHCP) with a matching DNS entry.

To ensure proper operation, there should be no firewalls or NAT (Network Address Translation) devices between

Agent X200 and the Monitor Master servers.

The connection to the servers must have a network latency of less than 10ms.

Connecting the power The Agent X200 must be powered by the supplied DC power adaptor:

1. Connect the supplied external DC power supply to the power socket on the rear panel with the supplied

cable.

2. Plug the power supply into a convenient AC outlet and switch it on (if appropriate) to power on the Agent

X200.

3. The Power indicator on the front panel should glow red initially (power on) and then green (Monitor Master

services running).

Chapter 5 - Initial software configuration

The Agent X200 is delivered with the operating system and basic Monitor Master software pre-installed.

However, before you can use the Agent X200, you must configure key properties (computer name, IP address,

subnet, gateway, DNS server), to match the configuration of this probe in the QM Server's database.

Once connected to the network, you can also download updated software to the Agent X200 from QM Server, if

required.

Equipment required for initial software configuration You will need the following equipment to perform the initial software configuration for an Agent X200:

A PS/2 or USB keyboard

A PS/2 or USB mouse

A video display with a VGA (analogue) connection

Configuring the network settings After initial hardware configuration (Chapter 4) is complete, configure the Agent X200 as follows:

1. Connect the keyboard to appropriate socket on the rear panel. If using a PS/2 keyboard, be sure to connect it

to the purple PS/2 socket.

2. Connect the mouse to the appropriate socket on the rear panel. If using a PS/2 mouse, be sure to connect it to

the green PS/2 socket.

3. Connect the VGA monitor to VGA interface on the rear panel.

4. Connect the supplied power supply unit to the DC connector on the rear panel.

5. Plug in the power supply unit to power up the Agent X200. Wait for the login prompt.

6. Login on the Agent X200 as admin with the password !arg0gr0up!

7. Change the Agent X200 IP settings:

Select Start->Settings->Network and Dial-Up Connections

Select the Local area connection with the Device Name Intel 8255xER. Right-click and select

Properties from the menu.

Select the Internet Protocol item and click the Properties button.

Set the IP address, subnet mask, and gateway address to the values in the System Server's database.

Enter the DNS server's IP address to enable control from the Monitor Master servers.

Close all dialogs with the OK button.

8. Change the computer name to a unique one in the network. We recommend that you use the related BSC

name as a base for the computer name, e.g. IPRB-PLT12C0. To change the computer name:

Selecting Start->Settings->Control Panel.

Navigate to System and press <Enter>.

Select the Computer Name tab.

Click Change

Change the computer name.

Close all dialogs with the OK button.

9. Reboot the Agent X200 and connect the RJ45 connector on the rear panel to your network.

10. The Agent X200 can now be accessed through the network by using its IP address or name.

11. To check that QM Server can access the Agent X200, run the QM diagnostic test

Configuring access to SIM Server To allow the modems in a probe to use SIM images from a SIM Server, you must edit its configuration files as

follows:

1. Connect to the probe using Remote Desktop or a locally connected keyboard and screen. Login to Windows

2. Edit the C:\Windows\DISIMv2.ini file to:

a. Set SCServer to specify the SIM Server (SSC) IP address and port, e.g. SCServer=192.168.50.29:18008

in the [HOSTS] section. If there is more than one SSC, add a separate SCServer line for each one to

specify its IP address.

b. Set SMS to n in the [VSIMScheme1] section.

3. Edit the [MATRIX] section of the D:\APS\Bin\iprobe.ini file to:

a. Set sim-server to yes

b. Set sim-mux to no

c. If the DISIM boards are on the backplane, you've finished Step 3; continue with Step 4.

d. If the DISIM chips are on-board (on the Modem Blades), set sim-onboard to yes and run cscript

newconf.vbs in the C:\APS\BIN folder to add a simemu value for each of the chips.

4. To avoid connectivity problems, add a static (persistent) route to the probe for each SIM server that you

want to use:

a. Display a command prompt

b. Use the ROUTE -p ADD command. For example:

ROUTE -p ADD 192.168.0.10 MASK 255.255.255.255 192.168.0.1

-sim server- ------mask----- --gateway--

Hint: Type ROUTE on its own to display help for this command.

Note: QM Server and Agents both need to know the address of the SIM Server and are usually configured with the

same address. It is possible to use different addresses for routing purposes (e.g. so QM Server connects over the

LAN while Agents connect over the Internet), but you should contact our support department for advice before

doing so.

Configuring routing If a script makes a GPRS or CSD connection, Windows will see it as a new network connection, and use it instead

of the (default) LAN connection. This can cause a problem if the script ties to access another Monitor Master server

while the GPRS/CSD connection is open. This is most likely if the GPRS connection is not dropped when the test

ends (the script terminates without performing a RAS Hangup).

A routing problem will also arise if the Projector is on a different subnet to the Agent, as the Agent will try to use

an active GPRS/CSD connection to send data to the Projector instead of using the LAN.

To avoid both these problems, bind the client IP address as follows. (An alternative method, using static routes, is

also documented but no longer recommended.)

The Agent also requires a static route to each SIM Server it uses, as described earlier - see Configuring access to

SIM Server for details.

Binding the Agent's client IP address

To prevent routing problems on the Agent X200, you should bind the IP address of its LAN interface to the

LocalAdapter key, as follows.

Login to the Agent X200 and open a command shell

Check the LAN adapter's name. Type ipconfig and you'll see information like this:

To create a route from an Agent X200 to a single client you need to know:

The interface number of your LAN connection (if you have more than one)

While not connected via GPRS:

If you want to make a route to a single IP address, then you are still making it to a range of machines - it's

just that the range of machines is one. The netmask you should use in this case is 255.255.255.255.

Now, type:

Or, if you have more than one LAN connection, add IF InterfaceNumber at the end.

Using the above example, to allow all clients from 10.11.x.x to come in, type:

Managing Agent X200 - Service Controller Service Controller provides facilities to:

Check the status of all Monitor Master Services running on an Agent X200

Stop, start or restart its Monitor Master Services

Examine or edit the configuration settings for its Monitor Master Services

Login to Quality Manager and select Service Controller from the Status menu System Configuration

Select the Agent X200 network name (or IP address) in the upper (Server) pane, then use the Servers menu

Managing Agent X200 - Windows Remote Desktop Windows Remote Desktop allows you to login to a remote probe as if you were sitting in front of its screen and

keyboard. This allows you to perform all sorts of management tasks, such as:

Stop, start or restart Windows services (including the probe's System Monitor) by using the Windows

Services applet.

Manage disk space, files, etc.

Check or edit ini files and registry entries.

Briefly:

Launch Remote Desktop Connection from the Start button (in the Accessories/ Communications folder).

Click the Options button, select the Local Resources tab, and set Remote computer sound to Leave at

remote computer. This is very important: See WARNING #1.

Switch back to the General tab and connect to the probe using port 4037, e.g. type 192.168.50.28:4037 as the

computer name. Note that 4037 is a non-standard RDP port.

Login using an appropriate username and password. (The initial default is admin with the password

!arg0gr0up!).

Once logged in, you can use the probe much like a local machine. If screen updating is slow, try reducing

the color depth on the probe,

Once finished, you must logout to terminate the connection and close any applications you were running on

the probe. See WARNING #2.

WARNINGS:

1. If you forget to choose the Leave sound at remote computer option, the probe will not be able to record or

replay any audio, so most voice testing will fall. To restore normal operation you must reboot the probe.

2. If you forget to logout from the RDP connection, probe bandwidth and stability may be reduced. Note that

closing the connection does not close the applications you were running on the probe - you must use the log

off button.

Managing Agent X200 - Screening Room Screening Room is a web-based GUI for Agent management and reporting. It provides a range of reporting

facilities for tests run by this Agent. It also provides access to Device Update, which can be used to update the

device profiles stored in this its database, and Agent Resource Management, which can be used to share limited

resources such as modems.

Note: Screening Room is deprecated in a Monitor Master QM system, as QM provides superior reporting and

resource management facilities.

Device update can also be performed from Quality Manager or Story Boarder.

Updating the Agent X200 INI files The SmartModems and LAN Adaptors in an Agent X200 are configured by two key .ini files on the appliance:

ntservice.ini and iprobe.ini. After making any changes, these files can be imported into QM, to update the system

management database.

Updating the ini files

While you can edit the ntservice.ini and iprobe.ini files manually (e.g. by using Notepad), the recommended way

to update them is to use the newconf.vbs utility to do it for you, as follows.

Connect to the Agent X200 using Remote Desktop or a locally connected keyboard and screen. Login to

Windows

Display a command prompt

Type cscript newconf.vbs

This will backup the current ini files then create new ones for you, by analysing the modems currently

installed

The generated files will also include a single DUMMY TEC, with slot number 55.

When it has finished, check the remclient.log log file for any error messages, and check the structure of the

new ini files to double-check.

LAN adaptors

Since Monitor Master 8.3, a Probe's LAN Adaptors are detected by newconf.vbs just like its SmartModems. They

do not require any special handling.

Once the iprobe.ini and ntservice.ini files have been updated with details of your SmartModems and LAN

Adaptors, you can use them to update the QM database:

Agent X200 - modem power control The modems in the Agent X200 usually turn on and off as required, under the control of your test scripts and

Quality Manager. However, you may also need to control them manually:

Connect to the Agent X200 using Remote Desktop or a locally connected keyboard and screen.

Login to Windows (login details are in Chapter 7).

Open a command prompt

Type: turnonoff slot state

Where:

slot is the slot number (0 .. 7)

state is the desired state: on (to turn it on) or off (to turn it off)

Keep a record of the SIM inserted for each modem, as well as the operator, PINs, and numbers for voice, fax, and

data. You will need this information when you update the QM Server database. (See the Quality Manager Admin

Guide for details.) A Configuration Sheet is included in Appendix A for you to use.

To add a local SIM:

Removing a local SIM If a modem uses a local SIM, you must fit one before you can use it in the Agent X200. However, you might need to

remove a SIM on occasion - for example, because you need it for another modem, or to replace it with a different

SIM (to test another operator).

1. Power down the Agent X200

2. Grasp the SIM Card protruding from the SIM Card slot on the rear panel and pull it out

Keep a record of the SIM inserted for each modem, as well as the operator, PINs, and numbers for voice, fax, and

data. You will need this information when you update the QM Server database. (See the Quality Manager Admin

Guide for details.)

The Agent X200 Watchdog The Watchdog is a hardware subsystem that will power off and restart the probe autonomously if it doesn't receive

a trigger signal from the Monitor Master system software (QMSERVER service) on the probe for a period of 5

minutes. This software normally sends a trigger every 60 seconds (configurable) to prove that its is running OK - so

the Watchdog doesn't reset the system and the probe operates normally. This trigger is sometimes called the

Monitor Master heartbeat.

So what is it for? The Watchdog provides automatic recovery from system lockups, helping to increase system

resilience, especially in unattended ("lights-out") operation. However, you may on occasion need to disable the

Watchdog, temporarily. For example, before attempting to restore the operating system from the hidden partition.

Note: You do not have to power down the probe before disabling or enabling the Watchdog, but may prefer to do

so if convenient. Changing the Watchdog should not interrupt normal operation.

Disabling the Watchdog

To disable the Watchdog:

Power down the Agent X200.

Remove the top panel.

Locate the Watchdog Link. There is a pair of red links near the front left corner of the main PCB; you want

the one that's further from the front edge (see below):

Name resolution

The hidden partition

Troubleshooting: Name resolution For correct operation, all probes in a Monitor Master installation must be able to resolve the QM Server's name to

an IP address, and QM Server must be able to resolve each probe's name to its IP address. Name resolution should

be provided automatically by your network's DNS, but if you do not have one, or your DNS fails in a way that

your system administrator can't fix it, you should be able to resolve the issue using one of these two methods:

Method 1: Configure TCP/IP properties correctly

Method 2: Edit the HOSTS file

A typical symptom for this problem is timeouts between probes and QM Server, and messages like Could not get

peer name from its address in the probe's logs.

Method 1: Configure TCP/IP properties correctly

If you encounter name resolution problems on a Monitor Master system you can:

On QM Server and each probe:

Display the properties of the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

Click the Advanced button

Set DNS suffix for this connection to your DNS suffix, e.g. mycompany.local

Tick the Use this connection's DNS suffix in DNS registration option

Save the changes

If this does not help, use Method 2: Edit the HOSTS file.

Method 2: Edit the HOSTS file

If you encounter name resolution problems on a Monitor Master system you can:

On QM Server:

Edit c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts in Notepad.

Add an entry for each probe in your system, like this:

Troubleshooting: The hidden partition The Agent X200 hard disk has a hidden (backup) partition that can be used to boot it, to quickly restore operation if

the main partition (drive C) is corrupted. This converts the backup partition from drive E: to drive C and converts

the usual boot partition to drive E.

This procedure has been carefully designed to work remotely i.e. to allow use over a network link, avoiding the

need for a site visit to an unmanned location.

WARNING: These next steps must be done very carefully, or the probe may be left in a state not accessible over

the net.

Step 1: Setting the TCP/IP parameters

To set the fixed IP address:

Run regedit.

Click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

Select Load Hive from the File menu and load E:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\config\SYSTEM. Choose a name

(e.g. system2) for the hive.

Click on the hive system2/ControlSet1/Services/TcpIP/Parameters/Interfaces.

You can see the GUID (General Unified Identifier) of the installed interfaces. To find the right one, browse

to the one with DHCP configured or the same ip address as on the source machine. For this interface:

Set EnableDHCP to 0

Set IPAddress to the current address

Set SubnetMask to the current mask

Set DefaultGateway to the current default gateway

Set DefaultGatewayMetric to 0

Click on system2 and select Unload Hive from the File menu

If you're not sure what the current values are, check the net parameters of your current booted system.

Step 2: Automatic Emergency Switch Back

This section describes a way to make the updated probe switch back to a working system, if it can't connect to the

net. This should always be applied if the probe is in an unmanned location. This method only works on probes that

are configured to connect to QM Server.

Set up a RunOnce entry:

Run regedit

Select Load hive from the File menu and load E:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\config\SOFTWARE to e.g.

software2.

Open the key software2/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/RunOnce.

Right-click to the right of regedit and select New/String Value. Enter a name, e.g. RenameBootIni.

Set its value to D:\update\RenameBootIni.bat

Click on software2 and select Unload Hive from the File menu

Create the file D:\update\RenameBootIni.bat with the content:

attrib -H -S c:\boot.ini ren c:\boot.ini boot.ini2 xcopy /H /Y e:\boot.ini c:\ attrib +H +S c:\boot.ini

Edit D:\aps\bin\iprobe.ini as follows:

In the SERVICE section, add or change the entry check-xmlrpc-period and set it to 10s. Make a note of

original value (for use later).

In the CONTROL and EVENTS sections, make sure that hostname refers to your qmserver.

The RunOnce entry above activates immediately after starting the old active partition for the next reboot. If

the serviceRem cannot connect to the QM Server, but the system can start up, the serviceRem will reboot the

system and make the old partition active again, after about 2-5 min. This gives you a chance to fix any

network issues.

If automatic emergency switch back occurs, you should be able to connect again, to fix the problem. Once you

have, you can reboot to try again. Before you do, enable automatic emergency switch back again:

Set the RunOnce entry again

Delete E:\boot.ini

Rename E:\boot.ini2 to boot.ini

Step 3: Activating The Partition

To activate the partition:

Run Start/ Settings /Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Computer Management / Disk Management .

Right click on the partition and select Mark Partition as Active.

Reboot the probe. Launch a command console and enter this command:

remclient -c resetpc

Step 4: Clean up

After the probe has rebooted:

Login to the updated system

Rename C:\boot.ini2 to boot.ini.

Launch a command console and check the attributes of c:\boot.ini. If hidden and system are not both set,

enter this command:

attribute +H +S C:\boot.ini

Edit D:\aps\bin\iprobe.ini and restore the previous check-xmlrpc-period entry in the SERVICE section - or

delete it if there was none. (You took a note of the original entry, above.)

Appendix C - Security Updates

Microsoft publishes security updates (patches) for its current Windows operating systems at regular intervals to

address newly discovered security risks - to fix weaknesses that might otherwise be exploited by Viruses, Trojans

or other Malware.

Do not apply these Microsoft Security Updates to your probes! They have not been tested by InfoVista Sweden

AB and might compromise stability. Installing them will invalidate the warranty; automatic Windows updates are

disabled on all probes and must remain disabled.

X-series probes are shipped without any security updates applied (although with many other measures to help

secure them against attack - for details see the appropriate System Security guide or search for "improving system

security"). If you wish to apply security updates to your X-series probes, use the Security Update Packs from

InfoVista Sweden AB. These have been tested by InfoVista Sweden AB and are approved for use on our probes.
