Conference Tour Overview This innovative ten city conference tour was an extension of Sisters
Network®
Inc., (SNI) Annual National African American Breast Cancer
Conference. The tour was a huge success as supported by a 46%
Increase in new participants. The one day conference highlighted triple
negative breast cancer and advanced breast cancer. The conference
exceeded the outreach goal of 1,000 participants by 14%. The largest
contingent of participants were breast cancer survivors. The
conference tour will resume in 2015 in ten new cities, to be scheduled.

Houston Presenters Polly Niravath, MD,
is a breast oncologist, and assistant professor in the
Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center at Baylor College
of Medicine in Houston. She is the director of the
Breast Cancer Survivorship Program at the Smith
Clinic, which is part of Harris Health Systems. She
takes a special interest in underserved breast cancer
survivors. Dr. Niravath received her medical degree
from the University of California in Irvine. She then
completed her medicine residency and oncology fel-
lowship training at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Ni-
ravath has a special research interest in breast cancer
survivorship, with a major goal to improve on offering comprehensive care to pa-
tients, from diagnosis to treatment to long-term survivorship care. Click here to view

Angel A. Rodriguez, MD, is the director of the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Clinic in the Breast Oncology Department at Methodist Cancer Cen-ter. Dr. Rodriguez trained at the Methodist hospital during his internal medicine residency at Baylor College of Medi-cine. He completed a fellowship in medical oncology and hematology at Baylor College of medicine and specialized
in breast cancer as part of the Susan G. Komen for the cure interdisciplinary breast fellowship program.
Dr. Rodriguez is active in breast oncology research and clinical trials. His fields of interest include triple negative
breast cancer, breast cancer stem cells, brain metastasis, and novel predictive bi-omarkers for personalized medicine. Dr. Rodriguez is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in internal medicine and medical oncology. His memberships include: American College of Physicians, American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Soci-ety of Hematology and Texas Medical Association and he serves a medical advisor, for

Sisters Network Triangle Presenters Paul Kelly Marcom, MD,
is currently the Medical Oncology Breast Program Clini-
cal Director of the Duke Multidisciplinary Breast Pro-
gram in Durham, North Carolina. He also serves as Di-
rector of the Hereditary
Cancer Clinic, Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center and
an Associate Professor of Medicine for Duke University
Medical Center. Dr. Marcom completed his medical de-
gree from the Baylor College of Medicine. He completed
a residency in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in He-
matology/Oncology at Duke University Medical Center. He has written numerous
articles on breast cancer genetics, quality of life issues and innovative therapies
for locally advanced breast cancer. Dr. Marcom was also a recipient of the Best

Keith D. Amos, MD, studied medicine at Havard Medical School and completed
his residency at Washington University’s Barnes-Jewish
Hospital. He completed a 3 year long fellowship at MD An-
derson Cancer Center. Throughout his clinical training, he
has participated in multiple training experiences for basic
science research. After completing the Howard Hughes
program, he decided to pursue a career in academic surgi-
cal oncology. The goal of the project was to study the use
of Mammaglobin-A as a tumor-associated antigen in breast
cancer for the development of a breast cancer vaccine.
Mammaglobin-A is a serine protease that is over-
expressed in approximately 80% of breast cancers. After completing fellowship train-
ing in July 2007, he accepted a position as a junior faculty member at UNC.
Dr. Amos clinical practice was general surgical oncology with specific interests
in the areas of surgical treatments for breast cancer, melanoma and endo-
crine malignancies.

D. Jay Brooks, Jr., MD, earned his medical degree from LSU. He completed his
residency at Charity Hospital in New Orleans and his fel-
lowship at the National Cancer Institute's Warren Grant
Magnuson Clinical Research Center in Bethesda, Mary-
land. He is board certified in internal medicine and medi-
cal oncology. Dr. Brooks has been on staff at Ochsner
since 1987. His leadership positions at Ochsner have
included Chief of Medicine, Chief of Medical Subspecial-
ties, Chairman of the Research Committee, membership
on the Research Advisory Committee, a former member of the Board of Governors
of Ochsner Clinic Foundation and the former Chief of Staff of Ochsner Medical
Center – Baton Rouge. He also holds an elected position on the Board of Gover-
nors of Ochsner Clinic Foundation. Dr. Brooks has written many articles for scien-
tific medical publications and has written chapters for several oncology textbooks.
Deborah Abernathy, MD, a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology and Hematol-ogy. Dr Abernathy earned her undergraduate degree
in Zoology from Louisiana State University (1975). She then earned her medical degree from Louisiana
State University School of Medicine (1978). She completed her residency (1979-1983) and fellowship (1983-1986) at Tulane University School of Medicine and then later received an academic appointment as
an assistant professor of medicine (1986-1990) at Tulane University School of Medicine.
Dr Abernathy presently works in a private practice along with three other physi-cians. She is an active member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and
the American Society of Hematology. She also participates in both NCI and in-dustry sponsored clinical trials.

Dr. Miles G. Harrison, MD, FACS, is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of
Medicine. Dr. Harrison set up a private practice in General
Surgery for 15 years. In March of 1996, Dr. Harrison joined
the Sinai Faculty Practice, Sinai Surgical
Associates, a teaching affiliate of the Johns Hopkins Surgical
Residency Program. Dr. Harrison was appointed Division
Head of General Surgery at Maryland General Hospital on
July 1, 2006. Dr. Harrison is board certified and
re-certified in General Surgery. He is a fellow of both the
American College of Surgeons and the International College
of Surgeons, and a member of the American Society of
Breast Surgeons. In 1988, Dr. Harrison organized and founded the non-profit breast
cancer support group, Sisters Surviving, chartered by the state in 1993. Dr. Harrison’s
subspecialty is in breast disease and he is a designated surgeon for the Lapidus Can-

Dr. Dawn Leonard , MD, FACS, Dr. Dawn Leonard is a board certified general surgeon and
a fellowship-trained surgeon specializing in breast surgical
oncology. She is certified by the American Board of Surgery
and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr.
Leonard completed her medical school and general surgery
training at Howard University Hospital. She joined the Fred-
erick Maryland community in 2006 as the first medical direc-
tor of Coordinated Breast Services for Frederick Memorial
Hospital and is the founder of Leonard Surgical Care Asso-
ciates, LLC, a surgical practice dedicated to the treatment of
benign and malignant breast disease. In 2009, she joined the LifeBridge Health medi-
cal system as the first medical director of the new Herman and Walter Samu-
elson Breast Care Center at Northwest Hospital leading them tonational ac-

Dr. Newman, M.D., MPH, FACS, FASCO, is a surgical oncologist, Professor of Surgery and Director of the
Breast Care Center for the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor,
Michigan, where she also serves as Program Director for the
Breast Fellowship. Dr. Newman holds a Masters Degree in Public
Health from Harvard University. She attended medical school and
completed her general surgery residency training at the State Uni-
versity of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn. She com-
pleted her fellowship in surgical oncology at the M.D. Anderson
Cancer Center. Prior to assuming her current position at the Uni-
versity of Michigan, Dr. Newman served as Assistant Professor of
Surgery at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, with a full-time commitment to research
and clinical practice in the Surgical Breast Section, and she continues to hold a posi-
tion as Adjunct Professor of Surgery with M.D. Anderson. Click here to view Dr. New-

Dr. Thomas M. Flake, Jr., M.D., FACS,
is a general surgeon specializing in diseases of the breast. He obtained his medical degree at Wayne
State University School of Medicine, where he also received his general surgical training. He has been in
the private practice of general surgery in the Detroit area for almost 29 years, is a Clinical Associate Pro-
fessor of surgery, and has remained active in the training of medical students are residents throughout
his career. In recent years, he has narrowed the scope of his practice to concentrate on the care of
breast disease by attaining accreditation and certifi-cation in breast ultrasound. He is an active member
of the American Society of Breast Surgeons, serving as a member of the legislative committee and participant in the Mastery of Breast Surgery Quality Program. Click

Mary Helen Hackney, MD, joined the faculty at VCU Massey Cancer Center in
1994, after completing her Hematology Oncology Fel-
lowship. Dr. Hackney is the director of the Rural Cancer
Outreach Program which sends teams of medical pro-
fessionals to underserved areas of Virginia. While she
has tried to cut back on travel, she continues in an ad-
ministrative position and as back up for other physi-
cians. She is very involved in breast health education,
and speaks frequently to both lay audiences and non-
oncology physicians about breast cancer care, preven-
tion and survivorship issues. She helps coordinate courses in breast health and
general oncology for internal medicine residents and fourth year medical students
and frequently lectures for other groups of students and residents. Click here to

William J, Irvin, MD, joined Bon Secours Cancer Institute from faculty at the
University of North Carolina where he developed a specialty in breast cancer. At North Carolina, he led a
nationally recognized clinical trial on pharmacogenetic dosing of tamoxifen. His research interests include
overcoming endocrine resistance in breast cancer, tri-ple negative breast cancer, and breast cancer in young women. He received his medical degree and complet-ed his residency at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. From there, Dr. Irvin completed a Hematology and Oncology fellowship at the University
of North Carolina. Dr. Irvin is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and is also board certified in Medical Oncology

Sylvia D Campbell, MD, PA, Dr Campbell earned her Doctorate of Medicine and com-
pleted her residency at the University of South Florida. Dr
Campbell has been in private surgical practice serving the
Tampa Bay area for over 30 years. She is committed to
giving back to others, both in the local community as well
as the world and this belief directs her vision of medicine.
Dr Campbell contributes her time and service to the local
community as an active volunteer and President of the
Board of the Judeo Christian Clinic, a free medical clinic in
Tampa. She has also served on mission trips to Haiti and
Uganda since 1996, and has been involved in helping chil-
dren travel to the US for life saving care. Dr Campbell also
serves as President of the Board of Directors of Village Partners International, a 501C
non for profit organization which provides care and life skills to the village of Papoli in

Heather Han, MD received her medical degree with honors from Seoul
National University College of Medicine in Seoul, South Korea. She completed her residency in Internal
Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic and a fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at the University of Miami/
Jackson Memorial Hospital. Dr. Han is currently an Assistant Member and Professor in the Department of Women’s Oncology, Don and Erika Wallace Compre-
hensive Breast Program at H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Cen-ter and Research Institute in Tampa, Florida. She is a
medical oncologist specializing in breast cancer and dedicated to helping find a cure for the millions of
women whose lives have been affected by a diagnosis of breast cancer. Dr. Han’s research interest is determining impacts on disparities in chemotherapy toxicity outcomes among breast cancer patients of different ethnicities, including medi-

Atlanta Presenters
Anita Johnson, MD is the Medical Director of Breast Surgical Oncology at
Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) at Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Atlanta, GA.
At CTCA, Dr. Johnson performs oncoplastic surgery. She also performs breast ultrasounds, needle core bi-
opsies, infusaport placements, genetic testing and counseling, and works with radiation oncologists to
treat breast cancer using intraoperative radiation ther-apy (IORT). Dr. Johnson earned a medical degree
from Morehouse School of Medicine. She is a Diplo-mat of the American Board of Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and was an Ambassa-
dor for the American Cancer Society. She also be-longs to The American Society of Breast Surgeons and the Society of Surgical

John McKnight, MD, MBA is a Radiation Oncologist at Cancer Treatment Centers of
America (CTCA) at Southeastern Regional Medical Cen-
ter in Atlanta, GA. Dr. McKnight is dedicated to providing
cancer care that is compassionate, up-to-date, and pa-
tient- and family-focused. He believes in care of the
"whole person," not just managing the disease.. Dr.
McKnight has many years of experience in treating a
broad range of cancers. He has established a reputation
in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer and lung
cancer. In addition to clinical practice, Dr. McKnight is
dedicated to staying well-informed about the ever chang-
ing healthcare environment. Dr. McKnight is a graduate of
Howard University College of Medicine in Washington,

Ogori N. Kalu, MD, MS is a breast surgeon and currently the Director of Breast
Surgery at New Jersey Medical School-University Hospital
Newark. She completed her Breast Surgical Oncology Fel-
lowship from Stanford University Medical Center in Califor-
nia subsequent to a surgical residency at State University of
New York – Downstate in Brooklyn. Current research pro-
jects include triple negative breast cancer and outcomes re-
lated to breast cancer in minority communities. She is dedi-
cated to educating and encouraging the community on the
importance of generalized good health and well being. She is a member of numerous
professional organizations including the American College of Surgeons, the Society
of Surgical Oncology, and the American Society of Breast Surgeons. Click here to

Kevin Clarke, MD, FACS, is the Director of Surgical Oncology at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. Prior to
this position, he was the Assistant Professor and Associ-
ate Program Director for the Surgical Residency Pro-
gram at University of Medicine and Dentistry – New Jer-
sey Medical School. Dr. Clarke is Board Certified in
General Surgery. He received his Medical Degree from
the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, in
Farmington, CT; his BA in Biology from Binghamton Uni-
versity, in Binghamton, NY. He did his residency in Gen-
eral Surgery at UMDNJ-University Hospital, in Newark,
NJ. He did his fellowship in Surgical Oncology at City of
Hope National Cancer Center, in Duarte, CA. He serves
on several professional committees most recently he
serves on the Credentials Committee at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and is
the Cancer Liaison Physician for the Committee on Cancer. He is also the re-
cipient of the Golden Apple Teaching Award – 2004. Dr. Clarke loves playing
golf and participates in international surgical missions on a yearly basis. He
has been to Ghana, Guatemala and the Philippines to name a few

Jarvis D. Reed,, MD, completed Medical School, his Internship and Residency, as
well as his Fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at the Univer-
sity of Tennessee. Dr. Reed is licensed in Tennessee, Missis-
sippi and Arkansas. He is a Health Grades Recognized Doc-
tor and President of the Bluff City Medical Society. Dr. Reed is
a dedicated supporter of the Memphis Affiliate Chapter of Sis-
ters Network, Inc. and has been a member of the Medical Ad-
visory Board since the chapter was first organized.
Michael P. Berry, MD, FACS, is a nationally respected Breast Surgical Oncologist who
founded The Breast Clinic of Memphis nearly a decade ago.
He earned his medical degree from the University of Arkan-
sas. Dr. Berry is Board Certified by the American Board. He
is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the So-
ciety of Surgical Oncology. He is a member of the American
College of Surgery Oncology Group, member and commit-
tee member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons,
and member of the American Society of Breast Diseases.
Sonia M. Benn, MD, was welcomed by the West Clinic, as a hematology oncolo-
gy specialist in 2006. Dr. Benn earned her medical degree
from the University Of Tennessee College Of Medicine and
subsequently completed her Internship in Internal Medicine
at Johns Hopkins University/Sinai Hospital. Dr. Benn is hon-
ored to be a part of The West Clinic team and is passionate
about providing care to her patients that transcends
the clinical to include the whole person. Dr. Benn
treats plays a vital role in the healthcare community.
