  • AASP/NJ would like to thank those who have provided generous sponsorships at NORTHEAST 2016:

t is my honor to welcome you, on behalf of the Alliance of Automo-tive Service Providers of New Jersey (AASP/NJ), to the associationsflagship event, the 39th annual NORTHEAST 2016 Automotive Serv-ices Show. I am truly humbled to look at NORTHEAST, which startedas a small tabletop show in Hasbrouck Heights, NJ, and see the mam-

moth-sized event in front of me. Nearly four decades ago when we firststarted, we were barely filling out a small hotel ballroom with tools like sand-paper and masking tape. Now, this is the largest regional trade show of itskind in the nation, bringing in major players from across the country, and evenaround the world. Our growth has truly been unprecedented. This year, weve set new standards for NORTHEAST. Our show floor isthe most packed it has ever been, and our educational slate is our most com-prehensive to date. This will without a doubt be the best show weve ever had.Whether youre a two-bay facility or a mega-shop, this is the place to find outeverything you need to know in order to improve and continue to succeed inthe automotive repair field. NORTHEAST will once again welcome favorites like the annualAASP/NJ and SCRS-hosted East Coast Resolution Forum and LeadershipMeeting, special I-CAR classes and a full slate of seminars and demo presen-tations. Of course, some of this years biggest cant-miss events are the BodyShop Certification and You: An OEM Panel Discussion, AASP/NJ Presents:Advanced Materials in 2016 & Beyond and the return of industry giant MikeAnderson to present Who Pays For What? Survey Results and PositioningYourself in the Collision Repair Industry, as well as KC Mathieus celebrityguest appearance (courtesy of Platinum Show Sponsor BASF) and SundaysFamily Day activities. We hope you enjoy this years sold-out floor, filled with exhibitorsboasting specials and deals on all of the newest tools and equipment to bringyour shop to the top of your market. I hope you spend the weekend learningmore about how these industry leaders can help optimize your success. Thank you to all of our exhibitors, speakers, sup-porters and, of course, the generosity put forth by all ofour 2016 show sponsors. And to the countless otherswho have helped make this event possible, we gen-uinely appreciate your role in making our flagshipevent the industry mainstay it has become. EnjoyNORTHEAST 2016!

THE AMATO AGENCYThanks to longtime AASP/NJ benefit provider the

Amato Agency, a number of Garden State body shopsnow have a lot more money in their bank accounts.

An independent insurance agency located in Nep-tune, the Amato Agency specializes in securing affordableinsurance for the independent business owner. The com-panys special safety group program provides annualdividend checks to participating shops if the groups totalloss ratio is better than anticipated by the insurance com-panies at the time of premium development. The lessclaims the group files, the more money the group willmake. And when the end of the year rolls around, thatmoney goes right back into the pockets of the bodyshops.

Our plan is only as good as our members, ex-plains Amato Agency President Joe Amato, Sr. As ourpool of premiums increases and our losses continue tostay low, we have a much bigger pot from which to poolour dividends.

Since joining AASP/NJ in 2001, the Amato Agencyhas provided association members with a series of out-standing membership programs, including its popularDisability Income Insurance Program.

Our retention has been better than 95 percent,Amato says. When people buy a policy from us, theystay with us.

In addition to offering a popular workers compen-sation program that provides AASP/NJ members with 20-percent upfront discounts, the Amato Agency also workshard to help shops navigate through the often-confusingworld of health care.

As Amato says, We represent all the major healthinsurance carriers in the state of New Jersey. We can sitwith our clients and evaluate a good, solid health insur-ance program that can keep the cost down and still pro-vide quality benefits for the insured.

The Amato Agency recently kicked off a new pro-gram that provides discounts for personal automotive andhomeowners insurance for employees of AASP/NJ mem-bers. Employees can request a rate quote on auto insur-ance, as well as gain information on the Amato Agencysmany services by contacting the agency at (800) 763-6574 or by going to amatoagency.com. AUTO BODY DISTRIBUTING CO.From sandpaper and body filler to masking tape

and paint, Auto Body Distributing Co. provides auto bodyshops with the basics at a lower price than most competi-tors. Anything you need to run your shop on a daily basiscan be found through Auto Body Distributing Co. Shopowners also get the best price on hard parts, since ABDprovides members with a list of parts suppliers that haveagreed to discount their product. We dont care if you area one-man shop or a 30-man shop; youll get the samegreat price.

ABDs 46-year history began in 1970, when ninebody shop owners joined forces to drum up membershipin their local association. Their determination, persever-ance and cutting-edge ideas of encouraging participationby becoming cooperative eventually led to an overwhelm-ing response. Today, the ABD has become a force in theindustry, and provides stockholders with shop supplies athuge savings in addition to the best hard parts discounts. We thank you for your support!

How is ABD able to provide a service like this to itsmembers? Because ABD buys so many supplies, we get alarge discount. But instead of keeping the profit and sell-ing the supplies at list price, only minimal markups areapplied. Our prices are still cheaper than other supplydistributors that sell their products at list price.

    CERTIFIED AUTOMOTIVE PARTS ASSOCIATION(CAPA)

There are replacement parts and there are replace-ment parts. Quality can vary widely. Just because a partis identified for a specific make and model vehicle, thereis no guarantee it will fit, perform, last or be as safe as theoriginal.

Not even an industry professional can tell a qualityreplacement part from the rest by looking at it or by what-ever fancy brand or authoritative name they call it.

The Certified Automotive Parts Association (CAPA)was established in the public interest in 1987 to set upand oversee a testing program to assure the suitabilityand quality of automotive replacement parts. Independent, unbiased, non-profit, fully transparent and with no vestedinterest in the outcome, CAPA has since become the autoindustrys recognized authority on the quality and safetyof parts used for collision repairs.

Our comprehensive testing program is a valuablepublic service that provides consumers, auto body shops, parts distributors and insurance adjusters with the reli-able, objective means they need to identify quality re-placement parts. Parts that will fit, perform, last and beevery bit as safe as the originals. CAPA Certification iseven recognized by government regulators as an assur-ance of quality.

What makes CAPA stand out from the rest is thefact that we have no vested interest in the sale of theseparts or in selling of certification services. The public in-terest is what is at the core of the CAPA program.

To date, over 66 million replacement parts haveearned CAPA Certification by meeting or exceedingCAPAs stringent quality standards, making it one of themost widely respected quality assurance programs ever.Thats the good news. The bad news: There are millions ofuntested, problematic parts in the marketplace. To be sure

CAR-PART.COMCar-Part.com displays the used parts inventories

of over 4,100 auto recyclers across the USA, Canada andMexico, totaling over 130 million parts on the Car-Part.com search engine. The website allows auto recy-clers to make it easy for collision shops, mechanics, corebuyers and retail customers to find the best part for theirvehicles based on condition, location, availability, brandand price.

Car-Part.com was created in the mid-1990s by anauto recycling family and the president of an Internet de-velopment and Web-hosting company. The auto recyclerswere frustrated by the proprietary nature of their inventorymanagement system; the systems on the market excludedbody shops and repair facilities, and also excluded autorecyclers who did not share the same management sys-tem. Since 1998, Car-Part.com has developed over 20software products to help auto recyclers manage their in-ventory as well as buy and sell their used parts, which en-ables them to run their businesses more efficiently andproductively.

Car-Part.com is unique in that while being a soft-ware development firm, the company is also a recyclerand operates a salvage yard at its headquarters in FortWright, KY. As a result, the company uses the same soft-ware in their own recycling facility that it sells to recyclercustomers. Car-Part.com is a public website, so me-chanics, dealers and the general consumer can search re-cyclers databases and contact them to coordinate thepurchase of used auto parts.

COLLISION EQUIPMENT COMPANYOne of the regions fastest-growing new providers

of dependable collision repair equipment, the Collision

Equipment Company has quickly established a strongreputation in the AASP/NJ community for quality prod-ucts and active support of the associations work on be-half of repairers. Founded just over three years ago, thePennsylvania company has built a sizable customer basefrom New York down to Delaware.

Since its formation, the Collision Equipment Com-pany has been an enthusiastic participant in AASP/NJsNORTHEAST Automotive Services Show. For this yearsfestivities, Business Development Manager Keith Eganand his crew will be expanding their presence to a 20-by-60 space to allow for extensive displays from manufac-turers including Betag Innovation (high-quality pullingequipment from Sweden), GYS (a French provider of re-sistance welders and self-piercing riveters) and Prima(MIG welders). Egan is excited to once again be involvedin the Northeast industrys most popular event.

The NORTHEAST Automotive Services Show al-lows us to expand our footprint and our offerings in themarkets we do business in, he says. I think theres moreoffered at NORTHEAST than you get at a national show orsomething like that because youre dealing with peoplewho do business in the same market. When repairers inSouth Jersey or Pennsylvania or even New York come tothat show, chances are theyre discussing an equipmentpurchase or an investment into the future with the peopletheyre going to do business with. NORTHEAST gives youthe ability to build a relationship with an individual or anorganization, and continue that relationship after theshow.

As the Collision Equipment Company continues toexpand its customer relationships and product offerings,Egan maintains a strong commitment to following thetrends that are impacting the overall automotive repairfield. A regular participant in the Collision Industry Con-ference (CIC) and the National Auto Body Council(NABC), he considers education and consolidation to bethe biggest issues shaping todays industry.

Theres a paradigm shift going on in our industrywhere repairers need to make an investment in equipmentbecause vehicles have changed and OEM certification hasbecome prevalent in the marketplace, he offers. I-CARtraining is something that shops need, but because ofconsolidation, were seeing that the consolidators dontwant to send their technicians out to facilities and exposethem to the ability for somebody else to hire them atthose training classes. So theyre looking for a higherlevel of service for training inside of their facilities, whichis all tied to equipment training, certification and the re-investment on behalf of the repairers to be able to workon cars going forward.

We see consolidation playing a huge part in the in-dustry, he adds. Collision repairers who are not part ofthat movement and are not consolidators or MSOs cansurvive the transition, but theyre going to have to be ableto re-invest in the market. Nationally, collision repairersare going to have to upgrade their equipment and in-crease the level of training provided to their technicians. We see CE Training as an opportunity going forward fortechnicians.

No matter where these developments ultimately takethe national and regional auto body industries, thosewhose livelihoods depend on the equipment they use willalways have a friend in the Collision Equipment Com-pany.

MAXON HYUNDAI-MAZDAFor New Jersey parts industry mainstay Rick Weber,

building personal, one-on-one relationships with cus-tomers is as important today as it was when he firststarted in the trade back in the early 80s. Known to Gar-den State repairers as the longtime parts director atMaxon Hyundai/Mazda in Union, Weber and the Maxonparts department see customers as more than just num-bers on an order.

Not surprisingly, this increasingly unique businessphilosophy has paid off. Currently serving most of NewJersey and parts of New York, Pennsylvania and StatenIsland, the Maxon Wholesale Parts Division has builtsuch a strong customer base that they recently had tomove into a new warehouse to accommodate increasing

sales. Launched in May 2014, the facility boasts 8,000-square-feet and $1.25 million in OEM collision and me-chanical parts. Thanks to the diligence of Webers crew,Maxon was able to make the major transition into its newwarehouse without a moments interruption in their regu-lar parts services. The professionals who comprise thecurrent Maxon parts team include an assistant warehousemanager known simply as Mason, who helps Weber runthe general day-to-day operations of the new facility.Parts Manager JP Pasquale oversees the daily serviceparts operation, while Ken Creasy, Bruce Dias and HectorCarrasquillo offer personalized service on the wholesalephones. With his department always in a state of growth,Weber credits Dealer Principal Michael Ciasulli for mak-ing the parts operation an ongoing success. He gives methe tools I need to do the business; he saw this [expan-sion] as a good move, Weber says.

Like many popular parts providers, MaxonHyundai/Mazda is a regular exhibitor at the annualNORTHEAST Automotive Services Show. In Webersmind, spending the weekend at NORTHEAST allows himextraordinary access to the clients who make it all possi-ble. Maybe I see one or two customers on a given day,but I cant see a lot of those people at one time, Weberexplains. NORTHEAST gives us the opportunity to seeliterally thousands of current and potential customers.

METROPOLITAN CAR-O-LINERAccelerating the Repair Process: Metropolitan Car-o-linerOffers the Right Mix of Equipment, Support & Training

Better technology. Faster. Smoother. No guesswork. These are comments Metropolitan Car-o-liner hears fre-quently about the Car-O-Liner equipment it sells andservices. But what the company values most is the feed-back they receive from customers after the sale. Highlyknowledgeable. Unbelievable customer service. Dedi-cated. A resource and an asset.

Ive never worked with a company so dedicated tomaking sure we have the right equipment and this muchsupport, says Shawn Abate, tech manager at The Colli-sion Centers in Patchogue, NY. Theyve made our livesso much easier.

Since 1979, body shop owners in the Northeasthave trusted Metropolitan Car-o-liner as their go-to resource for staying on top of a constantly evolving industry.

Metropolitan Car-o-liner has always adapted to thechanges in the collision repair industry, says PresidentDave Demarest, Jr. We supply the latest measuring,

  • 55

holding and welding equipment, along with in-depthtraining so our customers can provide safe, profitable repairs.

On the eve of GMs first mass-marketed, US-builtuni-body vehicle almost 40 years ago, the companyopened its doors within Stateline Auto Body, the North-vale, NJ shop belonging to Dave Demarest, Sr. Throughhis shops relationship with Volvo, Dave Sr. was intro-duced to Car-O-Liner and given the opportunity to evalu-ate the companys new frame repair bench. He immediatelysaw the value in providing Car-O-Liner products to hismarket.

Many things have changed since then. Aluminumhas replaced uni-body as the newest concern in collisionrepair, and the company now operates out of a 9,200-square-foot facility in Mahwah, NJ - double the size of itsprevious location and boasting a larger warehouse, train-ing facility and office space.

The Car-O-Liner brand is OEM-approved by mostcarmakers, including Audi, Bentley, BMW, Buick, Cadil-lac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, GMC, Hyundai, Infiniti, Jaguar, Jeep, Kia, Lexus, Lincoln, Mitsubishi,Nissan, Tesla, Toyota, Volkswagen and Volvo - and its nosecret why the Car-O-Liner brand is so widely respectedacross the industry.

Were proud that Car-O-Liner has the OEM equip-ment approvals of almost every manufacturer, includingthose with certified structural aluminum programs, DaveJr. explains. With vehicles like the 2016 Cadillac CT6and Fords F-150 aluminum body pickup, having the rightequipment and training to handle repairs is critical.

When it comes to improving the collision repairprocess, Metropolitan Car-o-liner doesnt solely provide

shops with the right tools and equipment; the companyalso helps to improve knowledge through training. Since2003, Metropolitan Car-o-liner has been an I-CAR GoldClass business, training volunteer and hands-on trainingsite. Just four years later, it was recognized for trainingover 3,000 technicians, appraisers and adjusters.

With its size, the companys current facility lends it-self to the hybrid boardroom and classroom dynamic thatCar-O-Liner provides in its training.

It was important to find a location that could ac-commodate larger training classes, says company ownerand founder Dave Demarest, Sr. As it is, our industry isplagued by improper repairs. Were trying to rectify thatgap before it gets any worse. He lauds the individualswho are willing to stand at the front lines of their industryand learn.

The industry is changing, and its great to seetechnicians who are willing to grow with it. This is yourlivelihood. Its important to stay educated on the trendsoccurring in your line of business.

Shop owners need to keep abreast of changes invehicle construction and reconstruction, adds Dave Jr.They are going to see increased use of aluminum, higherstrength steels and alternative materials.

Considering Metropolitan Car-o-liners dedicationto improving the industry, its no surprise that its been anactive participant in the NORTHEAST Automotive ServicesShow since the events first year. For the 39th annualshow on March 18-20 at the Meadowlands ExpositionCenter in Secaucus, NJ, Metropolitan Car-o-liner invitesattendees to visit Booths 117 and 217 to view live weldingdemos and test-drive the latest Car-O-Liner frame equip-ment, measuring systems and holding/fixturing products.

In addition, Metropolitan Car-o-liner will host LarryMontanez from P & L Consultants for a new workshop,Increase Profits, Lower Cycle Time: Supplements withTriage Estimating on Saturday, March 19 from 8:30am-10:00am. The workshop will focus on how to dramaticallyincrease estimate accuracy and lower cycle time throughblueprinting.

POLYCRACKERPolycracker is located in Boonton, NJ. For more

than 25 years, the company has been a provider of spe-cialty chemicals for the removal of wax, grease, silicones

and Armor-All from surfaces to prepare them for fisheye-free coatings and painting. Polycracker was the first to in-troduce a water-based chemical in this industry and isstill the number one choice.

Most fisheye problems are caused by poly-silicone,the ingredient in all of todays most durable paint protec-tion systems and waxes. Successful refinishing of treatedvehicles requires removal of all traces of these chemicals Polycracker was designed to do just that. Plus, Poly-cracker completely removes oil, grease, lubricants, finger-prints and dirt.

Fisheye eliminators are the not the answer. Addingfisheye eliminator to all paint jobs just in case cancause major problems down the road, because fisheyeeliminators contain some of the same ingredients as thewaxes. Adding fisheye eliminators to paint can make thepaint compatible with the wax, but using it can create ad-hesion problems, or wax residue accumulation.

Clearcoats are even worse. Using eliminator in sin-gle stage top coats is a remedy that can be pulled off, butusing the chemicals in primers or the basecoats of two-or three-stage finishes can be hazardous. Using elimina-tor may help you get the base on, but when you apply theclear, you could get thousands of fisheyes. When that

happens, your only chance of saving the job is by addinglarge doses of eliminator to the clearcoat. This can meancountless small fisheyes that you will later attempt tocolor sand and buff out. By doing so, youre risking slip-page (adhesion problems) down the road.

The simple solution is to eliminate fisheye at itssource. Use POLYCRACKER before sanding and beforepainting to ELIMINATE fisheye for good! Please contactus at [email protected].
