From the Campus Principal Jane Kuok

Dear Parents and Tenby Community,

This week marked the end of the SAFE STEPS Road Safety Awareness Drive through two special assemblies for primary and secondary. The assemblies reflected on the six key messages from SAFE STEPS over the months:

May – Seatbelts June – Distracted Driving July – Speed Limits September – Pedestrians October – Motorcycles November – Drink Driving

We celebrated the winners of each competition and shared this with the children (see photos at the end of my message). Special thanks must go to the staff, students and parents who joined the monthly committees to share their ideas that drove each topic. The Student Leadership Drive for Road Safety will continue next term where we will lead sessions at DR Park for secondary students and other secondary aged students from schools in the local community. We hope that the key messages of road safety will continue in the minds of the community.

REMINDER: Parents’ SurveyPlease remember to fill in the parents’ survey that was sent out earlier this week. The survey will be open until the end of December. For parents who would like access to a computer, we have set up a few computers in the Library for parents to use. Please ask the Librarian for assistance if you would like to use this facility.

ENGAGE Parent Portal & Communication with the SchoolTo communicate with the school, please could we urge parents to use the usual channels of communication i.e. Student Planner, E-Mail: [email protected] or telephone 05 5252628 instead of the ENGAGE Parent Portal. We will use the ENGAGE Parent Portal as a one way tool to send information home from the School e.g. letters, reminders and notices. This will be the main form of communication from January 2017.

Swimming Gala – Saturday 26th NovemberWe look forward to seeing as many parents as possible at the Swimming Gala tomorrow.

Christmas Assembly Please remember that the Christmas Assemblies will take place next week – Monday for TEYCI and Tuesday for the Main Campus. We encourage all staff, children and parents in attendance to dress in Christmas colours.

Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) Bookings for January 2017The CCA options have been sent to parents via the ENGAGE Parent Portal today along with instructions for booking and information on the changes to the CCA programme from January. Please note that all CCA Bookings will take place via the ENGAGE Parent Portal and will be based on a first come first serve basis. Therefore, it is important that parents find the time to login to the portal to select the CCAs for next term. These need to be chosen by Friday 9th December.

Please remember that with all end of terms, the school day will end at 12 noon for primary and 12:30hrs for secondary students.

Class PartiesBoth sections will hold class parties on their respective last day of term. Arrangements for each section will be communicated via the students.

FarewellsThe following members of staff will be leaving the School this term and we would like to thank them for their contri-butions to the School. We wish them all the best in the future and hope that they continue to be part of the Tenby community. They are:

Mr. Choong Chee Kong (Head of Sekolah Tenby)Before joining Tenby, Mr. Choong had an illustrious career with the Malaysian Ministry of Education, serving in many capacities, ranging from a being a popular classroom teacher to heading a well-known government school in Perak. During his career he was honoured with various distinguished service awards for his efforts.

It was indeed a joy when Tenby was able to coax him to postpone his retirement to serve the school for at least two years. We wish to thank Mr. Choong for his many contributions to the school. The school has improved all round under his leadership. For example, in the latest UPSR results, which were just released, Sekolah Tenby attained the second highest Grade Point Average of all the primary schools in the North Kinta District.

Mr. & Mrs. Manikam (Hostel Wardens)Our present Hostel Wardens, Mr. and Mrs. Manikam will be retiring in December. They have been with the school for 11 years and were instrumental in setting up the current Hostel Facility. Together, they have provided great wisdom and support to a total of 88 boarding students.

Ms. Jane Looi (Deputy Head Student Affairs, Sekolah Tenby) Ms. Jane will be leaving us after 10 years with the school. She has been a key player in building up the pastoral side of the national stream and has contributed greatly to the raising standards in English. She will be greatly missed.

Mr. Harjinder Singh Seggu aka Mr. Harry (Teacher of Law)Mr. Harry has been with the school for six years and has played a role in the progress of the A Level programme where he has taught Law, History and Thinking Skills.

Mrs. Josephine Peter (Teacher – TEYCI)Mrs. Peter is fondly known as Mrs. Michael by the children will be retiring from teaching. She has been with Tenby for the last 12 years. Her dedication and love for the profession has enabled children to enjoy her classes very much.

There were many animals like raccoons, tarantulas, snakes and

many more. Then,we fed some fish near the lake. Next, we went to watch

a show about tigers. We were given a chance to hold a hoop for Nelle,

the bird, to fly through. Mining was our final stop. We learnt how to mine

and we gained many experiences based on the hands-on activities done

that day. Everyone had a beautiful and memorable time together. Of

course, we took loads of photos to capture the great time we had.

IPC Workshop – Tuesday 22nd November, 2016

The IPC workshop at TEYCI was well received especially by the new parents who did not have much

knowledge nor understanding of what IPC is all about. They were introduced to the IPC Learning Process

which provides a structured approach that ensures children’s learning experiences are as stimulating and

rigorous as possible. The process starts with Entry Point, Knowledge Harvest, Exploring the Theme,

Research activity, Recording activity and lastly the Exit Point. The parents became students for the day,

carrying out some activities prepared for them. Through this, they had a better insight on understanding the

processes better. They realised and found out that there are three main types of learning styles in which

learners learn best: Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic. They went back knowing that IPC is not a subject but

a curriculum of 10 subjects.

These are some feedbacks from the parents who attended the workshop

The IPC workshop was very

informative as it helped me to have a

better understanding on how and

what the school is teaching. Hence, it

enables us to help our kids on their

learning journey.

Ivy Kow (mother of Casandra Chan)

Overall, this workshop gave me a

good understanding of the IPC. Do

keep up the good work and ensure

the IPC is fully utilized.

Tan Kah Wai (father of Tan Mei Yan)

This workshop is very informative in

understanding my child’s learning journey. IPC

has a seamless fusion of academic and non-

academic curriculum making it optimum. It’s

delivery method is fun and creative. Overall, we

find IPC wholesome and relevant.

Christmas is the time for giving and sharing. The Christmas mood is in the air at TEYCI with setting up of

the Christmas “Wish” Tree together with displays of the children’s art work. The Christmas wish tree is up

for a charity cause. The wish list from the under privileged children has been put up on the tree. This is to

give our students an opportunity to make a child’s wish come true at Christmas. We are pleased to inform

that all the children have their wishes granted. Well done to our students and parents for making these

children happy.

Year 1 activities

Lessons in Tenby Schools are not only confined to the classroom as the Year 1 children carried out the lesson in the school hall on the topic on measurement. They used different non-standard uniform units to measure the coloured lines in the school hall. Children were excited to find out how many objects that were needed to measure each line. They practiced cooperation throughout the whole learning activity in completing the given task successfully. To end the lesson, children used their body to make a line between the boys and the girls and compared who made the longest line (boys or girls).

Yeah…. The boys made the longest line.

News from Primary

Mathematics is a subject where you learn best by tackling problems/challenges. Every week, a

new challenge will be posted here for you to pit your wits against.

We invite you to have a go at solving it. If you get stuck, keep trying, and do go away and come

back later- often, you will find that you have a better idea on your second, third or even fourth

attempt.

SUSPENSION

Unfortunately, we have had to suspend a child due to poor choice of behaviour,

taking something from another child’s bag.

The School takes inappropriate student actions seriously and does not tolerate

poor behaviour choices.

How can you help to widen your child’s vocabulary? (http://www.readingrockets.org/)

Vocabulary plays a fundamental role in the reading process, and contributes greatly to a reader's

comprehension. With help, kids can overcome vocabulary limitations that affect their reading. Below

are some tips and specific things to do.

What parents can do to help at home?

Engage your child in conversations every day. If possible, include new and interesting words in your conversation.

Read to your child each day. When the book contains a new or interesting word, pause and define the word for your child. After you're done reading, engage your child in a conversation about the book.

Help build word knowledge by classifying and grouping objects or pictures while naming them.

Help build your child's understanding of language by playing verbal games and telling jokes and stories.

Encourage your child to read on his own. The more children read, the more words they encounter and learn.

Year 5E

What is a poem?

A poem is really a way of writing a story in a more interesting way to capture readers’

attention.

In Literacy, we have learned to write and perform to various types of poems of our own.

One particular form of poem which does not use rhyme or regular rhythm is the free

verse poem.

In a free verse poem, we can tell stories of what happened to us or our friends and

family. We are free to use our own style of writing that we think would get the message

across to our readers.

The following are two free verse poems (“I’m the youngest in the house” and “Rodge

said”) written by the poet, Michael Rosen. He wrote them based on his own experience

when he was a child. We enjoyed reading them because they gave us a great, good

laugh!

News from the Music DepartmentEnd of Term Concert, Thursday 1st December, 19:30hrs to approx. 21:00hrs To bring the term to a close ahead of the Christmas holiday, students from both Year 10 and 11 IGCSE Music groups will present a programme of solo and ensemble items in the Auditorium. While we anticipate that this concert will mainly be of interest to parents, relatives and friends of the participating students, members of the wider Tenby community are also warmly invited. Tickets are not required but it would be appreciated if some indication of anticipated numbers attending could be passed to Dr. Rowlands before the day of the concert.

New Music RoomsThe Music Department’s facilities have recently received the very welcome addition of 6 individual teaching and learning rooms. The rooms, located immediately in front of the Auditorium in Block C, are multi-functional in that they will be used as one-to-one instrumental /vocal tuition and music practice spaces as well as ‘break- out’ rooms for composing and performing activities in key stages 3 and 4. When finally complete, each room will be air condi-tioned and sound proofed and house either an acoustic or electronic piano or drum kit. These facilities will serve greatly to enrich students’ learning experience of Music.

Nurturing Tenby’s Leaders of Tomorrow

Charles Tan, the Organising Chairman, with principal facilitator Mr Richard Davidson.

Student Leadership Development Program 2016 On the 18th and 19th of November 2016, the first ever Student Leadership Development

Program (SLDP) in Tenby was run by Tenby Schools Ipoh’s very own Sixth Form and

took place in the school itself. The program was designed to allow members of the Sixth

Form and Year 11 to bond whilst developing leadership and teamwork skills. This was

met with a great response as the number of total participants came up to a staggering 88.

The camp brought together students of Year 11 and the Sixth Form

Page 29: TENBY SCHOOLS IPOH - tenby.edu.my · ANYAMAN TIKAR POSTER NILAI MURNI . CD NILAI MURNI FOLIO NILAI MURNI We are very happy to have completed our task. Nesha & Zi Xuan . We are excited

Two days of total engagement & teamwork

The SLDP committee was made up of 12 students from the Sixth Form who initiated,

designed, and carried out the program , with Charles Tan as the organizing director and

Stephanie Cheah as co-organizing director. The committee members worked tirelessly

for months in between classes and after school to prepare the event. After much hard

work and cooperation from teachers and staff members, the event was carried out

successfully and professionally. The guidance and support from Mr. Louis Rozario Doss

(Head of Tenby Sixth Form) and Mr. Richard Davidson (Head of Secondary) was

especially crucial throughout the event and was therefore deeply appreciated by the

committee.

The participants had the opportunity to reflect

on where they were heading in life

Working together for a shared purpose

The event started with registration of the participants and separation of groups at 1.30

p.m. on Friday (18th November) after school ended and was followed by a series of

‘icebreaking’ activities in the school’s multi-purpose hall such as the Human Knot and a

personality test for the participants to get to know one another. Afterwards, the opening

ceremony was officially commenced by Charles Tan and Mr. Richard Davidson, followed

by The Egg Challenge, presented and organized by Mr. Davidson himself. The Egg

Challenge activities were carried out sporadically throughout the two-day event and were

central to the whole event.

Mr Chris Tan from INTI led a workshop on Innovation

and Leadership

Page 31: TENBY SCHOOLS IPOH - tenby.edu.my · ANYAMAN TIKAR POSTER NILAI MURNI . CD NILAI MURNI FOLIO NILAI MURNI We are very happy to have completed our task. Nesha & Zi Xuan . We are excited

Later, a workshop on Leadership and Innovation by Chris Tan, a student from INTI, was

conducted in which the groups of students were given the task of designing and

presenting a product to meet the consumer’s specific needs to showcase their leadership

and innovative skills. Dinner was served afterwards followed by the second Egg

Challenge

Activity– creating and performing a jingle to promote their group’s egg and its capsule

(product).

Then a Treasure Hunt was held in which groups had to work with their teammates in order

to complete challenges and solve a series of riddles and puzzles hidden around the

school and complete the Treasure Hunt as quickly as possible. After the Treasure Hunt

all the groups were given some time to rest and shower before returning to their assigned

classrooms to sleep.

Learning to win through timing, strategy and

teamwork

The second day began at 6.30 a.m. on Saturday (19th November) . We woke up and

showered before having breakfast. After breakfast, we participated in a workshop by Ms.

Sally Chong, a representative from Taylor’s University, about understanding ourselves as

individuals. Groups were given the task of rebranding their group, identifying their

weaknesses as a group and coming up with solutions to overcome these weaknesses.

Page 32: TENBY SCHOOLS IPOH - tenby.edu.my · ANYAMAN TIKAR POSTER NILAI MURNI . CD NILAI MURNI FOLIO NILAI MURNI We are very happy to have completed our task. Nesha & Zi Xuan . We are excited

After the workshop, the groups took part in the Spaghetti Bridge Task in which they were

instructed to work as a team to build bridge models with specific capacity requirements

out of raw spaghetti and a few other given materials. Afterwards, groups assembled in

the canteen for lunch before returning to the multi-purpose hall for the presentation and

judging of their completed bridge models. A game of Tug of War followed in which groups gave their all in cheering for each other

and winning as many rounds as they could. The hall was full of loud cheering and the

atmosphere was overflowing with cries of sheer determination. The best part of all, the

teachers who were present were invited to duel against the committee members in one

round at the end – needless to say, the teachers won by a landslide.

“Force alone won’t work. Learning about what it takes

to succeed as a group.”

Building bridges –both physically as well as between people of

diverse cultures and ideologies in today’s world.

To conclude the series of activities, a final test or launch of each group’s egg capsules

was done in Block D by Mr. Davidson. All groups gathered excitedly and cheered for

their beloved eggs as they were secured in their respective capsules designed from

recycled materials and launched into the air from the third floor of Block D, allowing

them to land in the middle courtyard. It was an exciting, rewarding, and educational

experience for the groups as they cheered for their ‘eggy’ friends that survived the

launch. After the egg launch, all groups were assigned areas or rooms in the school to

clean up before packing their bags and assembling once again in the multi-purpose hall

for the closing ceremony.

As each group was scored for all their activities during the program, the final scores were

announced during the closing ceremony. Third place went to Team Eggsy, second place

to Team Harambaegg, and first place to Team Humpty. After the announcement of

winners, Team Humpty proudly chanted their slogan in unison, “Stronger than Humpty,

smarter than Dumpty!” The rest of the ceremony included words of thanks to the

committee members, participants, and teachers as well as the awarding of certificates to

all the participants.

The program is characteristic of the leadership spirit and skills of the students in Tenby

Schools Ipoh and this showed. The students of the SLDP committee initiated and

organized the program themselves, several teachers volunteered to sleep in the school

to supervise and assist the students in any way they could, staff members cooperated

and supported the program in manifold ways, and participants were highly engaged and

gave their best throughout the event. All these gestures represent the strong leadership

and teamwork skills that Tenby Schools Ipoh in its student leaders.

With our wonderful teachers ever at our side!

Well done to all the people of Tenby for being leaders in our community. We could not

have done it without you! Given the event’s success, the committee hopes to organize

another Student Leadership Development Program in the future with the possibility of

having it become a tradition and open to younger years to join as well the next time.
