Big Orange Slices...Bitten by the Injury Bug

The 2012 season hasn’t even started yet and the injury report is already a major factor in how the early part of Tennessee softball’s new campaign will develop.

Lady Vol junior third baseman and two-time NFCA All-American (2010, 2011) Raven Chavanne suffered an avul-sion fracture of her right thumb in January, necessitating surgery that will keep her out of action through at least the opening weekend’s Kajikawa Classic (Feb. 9-12). The potential is there for the Thousand Oaks, Calif., native to return for the trip to the Time Warner Invitational in Austin, Texas (Feb. 17-19), but that decision will be made early next week.

Junior outfielder (2010 All-American and 2011 NFCA All-Southeast Region selection) Kat Dotson continues her recovery from off-season surgery on her right knee. While expected to be available for action in Tempe, the Savannah, Ga., product could be removed from the line-up if there are any issues from the previous injury.

Loads of Recent Success vs. the Pac-12

Current Lady Vol players are just 3-6 against the Pac-12, however, but own wins over #2 UCLA (2/26/11), #3 Arizona (WCWS-6/3/10) and Oregon State (2/21/09).

2012 LADY VOL SOFTBALL HONORSNotes...against top-ranked Alabama at Lee Softball Stadium on March 22, 2011 (5-9, 4-1).

Let’s Open the Season With a “W!”

Tennessee is 9-7 all-time in season openers and 7-3 under co-head coaches Ralph and Karen Weekly after blasting Michigan State, 11-2 (5 inn.), back on Feb. 11, 2011. UT has now won seven of its last eight season openers with the lone loss occurring on Feb. 12, 2010, to eventual national champion #8 UCLA at the NTC Divi-sion I Elite Invitational. The Lady Vols christen their 2012 campaign against UCSB on Feb. 9 at the prestigious Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz.

2012 Lady Vol Softball...A Brief Preview

This year’s edition of the Big Orange softball squad returns 15 letter-winners, including seven that started at least 31 games in 2011, and welcomes back all 49 pitching victories from the circle. UT bolsters that impressive depth with the addition of a high-profi le class of four newcomers that was rated No. 2 in the nation for 2011 by ESPN RISE.

In all, Tennessee returns 74% of the total hits, 78% of the runs, 67% of the doubles, 75% of the triples, 68% of the home runs, 74% of the RBIs and 83% of the stolen bases from a team that reached as high as No. 3 in the national rankings while completing the 2011 season as the NCAA Division I’s top off ense by batting average (.348).

Included among the returnees for the Lady Vols are (2011 stat totals in parentheses): 2011 Louisville Slug-ger/NFCA First Team All-American and current USA Softball Senior Women’s National Team member Lauren

Gibson (Junior, 2B—2011 SEC batting champion counting SEC games only at .451, .420 avg., 13 doubles, eight HR’s, 63 RBIs, 12-12 stolen bases), 2011 USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year Top 10 Finalist and Louisville Slugger/NFCA Second Team All-American Raven Chavanne (Junior, 3B/OF—2011 SEC batting cham-pion counting all games, .455 avg., 90 hits, 66 runs scored, 33-36 stolen bases), 2011 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Third Team All-American Ellen Renfroe (Sophomore, P—45 appearances, 27 games started, 26-7 record, 1.50 ERA, 259 K’s in 201.0 IP), 2011 USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year Top 25 Finalist and Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Southeast Region selection Kat Dotson (Junior, OF--.401 avg., 73 hits, 54 runs scored, 10 HR’s, 64 RBIs, 26-31 stolen bases), 2011 Southeastern Conference All-Freshman choice and recent USA Softball Junior Women’s National Team member Madison Shipman (Sophomore, IF--.292 avg., eight doubles, fi ve HR’s, 27 RBIs), power-hitting utility player Shelby Burchell (Senior, UTL--.325 avg., 15 HR’s, 54 RBIs) and 2010 Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Southeast Region selection Ivy Renfroe (Junior, P—37 appearances, 25 games started, 19-4 record, 2.07 ERA, 157 Ks in 152.1 IP).

Highlighting the Lady Vol freshman class are Cheyanne Tarango (P/IF, Anaheim Hills, Calif.), Hannah Aka-

mine (C/IF, Escondido, Calif.), Haley Fagan (P/IF, Cornersville, Tenn.) and Hannah Trainer (IF, Brentwood, Tenn.). Tarango recently helped the USA Softball Junior Women’s National Team to the ISF Junior Women’s World Cham-pionship in Cape Town, South Africa, blasting a game-winning grand slam during a title-winning, 4-1 victory over Japan.

A Fixture in the Rankings!

The Lady Vols have a habit of fi nding themselves in the rankings according to the USA Today/National Fast-pitch Coaches Association (NFCA) poll. TENNESSEE HAS NOW BEEN RANKED IN EACH OF THE LAST 120

hasn’t left since. The highest ranking achieved by Tennessee during that span occurred in 2007 when UT spent 11 consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the way to a national runner-up fi nish.

Tennessee opens the 2012 campaign at #9 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll and at #14 in the USA Today/NFCA rankings.

UT enters the 2012 campaign on a six-game winning streak in the month of February dating back to a 5-0 defeat to #19 Stanford (Feb. 20, 2011).

Bring on the Extra Softball

Tennessee now owns an 11-2 mark over its last 13 extra-inning contests since the start of the ‘09 season. The Best of the Best

With three inclusions on the Top 50 “Watch List” for the 11th-annual USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year award, the No. 9 Tennessee softball squad equaled Cal, Florida, Michigan and Texas for the most selections by a single program in the nation as Lady Vol junior third baseman Raven Chavanne (top 10 fi nalist last season), junior second baseman Lauren Gibson and sophomore pitcher Ellen Renfroe were each tabbed to the prestigious list.

UT had a program-high four individuals (Abbott, Durant, Fekete, Schutzler) included on the 2006 “Watch List” and three incorporated as part of the “Watch List” in 2007 (Abbott, Callahan, Schutzler), 2011 (Chavanne, Kelly Grieve, Ivy Renfroe) and now 2012.
