Tepilora, Rio Posada, Montalbo Biosphere Reserve
The BR is in in the North East of
Sardinia, the second-largest island in
the Mediterranean Sea.
The BR boundaries are established by
the drainage basin of the Rio Posada
and the massifs that surround it (from
Montalbo to the Alà mountains and
Monte Nieddu).
Biodiversity relevance
The Biosphere reserve includes very important and significant areas
regarding biodiversity conservation, with management plans (and
management bodies) coordinated by European, regional and provincial
standards and planning:
• SCI Montalbo ITB021107
• SCI Berchidda ITB020012
• Tepilora Regional Park
• Areas of natural interest identified by L.R. 31/89
• Areas subject to hydrogeological restrictions
• Forest sites and state forests
• Historical and environmental Geo-mining Park of Sardinia
The area of the Biosphere Reserve contains 28 habitats, of which 5 are
priority (1150 - Lagoons, 2250 – juniper bushes and dune bushes, 2270
– tree-lined dunes, 6220 – Mediterranean arid meadows, 9580 – Mediterranean
woods of Taxus baccata)., at least 22 species of birds, 4 species of
reptiles, 2 species of amphibians, 2 species of invertebrates and 1
species of a plant to be protected within the community

Core area 1 “Monte Tepilora and Usinavà”
This core area falls within the Tepilora Regional Natural Park and the Sos Littos, Usinavà,
Crastazza, Sa Pedra Bianca and Monte Nieddu forests (areas under special management by
the Regional Forestry Agency – FoReSTAS). This territory is characterized by alternations of
morphologies associated with the contact between granite and metamorphic rock. The
lithologies present in the area lend it a mountainous character: inaccessible along the slopes
and relatively homogeneous and planar in the summit parts of the portions belonging to the
central highlands on the border of the Sardinian-Corsican batholith.
The forest coenosis in the core area is mainly represented by formations of evergreen
sclerophyllous forest, dominated especially by holm oak and cork oak trees.
Core area 2 “Delta of the Rio Posada”
The area is situated entirely within of the Parco Naturale Regionale di Tepilora. The delta of the
Rio Posada is situated on a flood plain and is characterised by the presence of meanders and
coastal ponds containing transitional waters. The ornithofauna of the delta is certainly a
valuable and unique element worthy of protection, but also the ichthyofauna and the amphibian
and reptile fauna find a peculiar ecosystem for the island as a whole in this part of the territory.
Looking at its vegetation, this core area is characterised by the development of the halophile
Sardinian vegetation unit of saltwater areas, ponds and coastal lagoons. The vegetation
unit of saltwater environments consists of specialised plant communities which generally
develop on loamy clay soils with poor drainage and flooded by saltwater for quite long periods
of time.
Core area 3 “Montalbo”
The area is situated entirely within Site of Community Interest ITB021107 “Monte Albo” and
largely falls within the territories of the Historical and Environmental Geo-mining Park of
Sardinia (now part of the UNESCO Geoparks Network). Montalbo is a carbonate (limestone
and dolomite) massif from the Mesozoic era, which is characterised by high mountains (> 1000
metres) overlooking the sea, by the presence of little or no vegetation in the summit areas and
by wooded areas along its slopes. The mountain has retained a very strong ecological integrity,
partly because of the impervious nature of the territory. In terms of vegetation, Taxus baccata
and Acer monspessulanum coenoses, which are currently growing discontinuously in
mountainous areas, play a particularly important role in terms of conservation. The core area of
Montalbo is also peculiar in terms of its endemic species.
Tepilora Rio Posada and Montalbo Biosphere
Reserve has some unique features that cannot be
found anywhere else in Sardinia:
• it has a delta and an associated network of coastal
lakes.
• Due to its singular geodiversity, it is possible to
find igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks
within a few kilometres of each other.
• There are a number of endemic species:
• Amphibians and reptiles: Speleomantes flavus,
Podarcis tiliguerta, Discoglossus sardus, Hyla
sarda;
• Invertebrates: Papilio hospiton, Lasiommata
paramegera;
• Birds: Accipiter gentilis arrigonii;
• Plants: Brassica insularis, Campanula forsythii,
Crocus minimus;
• Mammals: Ovis gmelini musimon), as well as
other significant

The high geodiversity facilitates the development of a
rich mosaic of habitats
In this complex ecological
patchwork, the presence of
humans – which has left
archaeological traces dating back
to the Neolithic – has led to the
development of a number of
cultural and natural landscapes
over the course of its troubled
history. Identity and outside
influences have had a big impact
on the quest to preserve
dynamic balance in a harmonious
relationship with the territory.
An emblematic example of the search for balance between man
and biosphere is provided by the relationship between the
people of the island and water. The fact that water supplies tend
to be scarce and localised has had an influence on settlement-
related, social, economic and even religious matters from
prehistory to the present day.
The territory of the Biosphere Reserve embodies the recent radical
changes in the relationship between the coast and the interior of the
whole Sardinia.
