Weekly A Message from our Head of Junior School

Assalamu Alaykum,
This week I would like to introduce our Early
Stage 1 Leader, Miss Cardinale. Miss Cardinale
coordinates our Kindergarten teachers and their
teaching and learning programs. She also leads
our newly established Cultural Diversity Team.
She has been working tirelessly with her team
planning the upcoming Harmony Day events
scheduled for Friday 20th March, and what an
event it will be! We look forward to you joining
us on the day.
In other news, our judges met today to select our winners for the Book Fair
best dressed. The decision was difficult as there were so many fantastic
outfits over the week of the fair. As a result, we have selected a total of 12
best dressed students! Winners will be announced at a morning assembly next
week. Students are also reminded to submit the colouring competition entry.
Competition closes next Friday.
Congratulations to Mr Khreizat!
Our class of the week is 6K. Please enjoy reading about their learning
experiences this term and the wonderful and kind words the class has about

Bellfield College’s K-2 classes gathered for an exciting Student Representative Committee (SRC) assembly last Friday. The assembly program commenced with the recitation of a Surah from the Noble Quran followed by presentations from Year 1 and 2 on the exciting songs and projects they have been working on in class.
Awards for exceptional behaviour and achievements were handed out in the presence of our wonderful parents and teachers. Finally our four K-2 SRC members were announced and presented with their certificates and badges. Congratulations to our little role models!

Term 1 Year 6 Experience This is the experience of several year 6 students from 6K during Term 1. In
English, we have been learning how to write informative texts focussing on
newspaper articles. We have also been learning about complex sentences, topic
sentences, objective and subjective language and the difference between facts and
opinions. We learnt how to apply comprehension strategies such as monitoring,
questioning and making connections.
We have also been learning about main and subordinate
clauses. It was kind of confusing at first, but Mr. Khreizat
explained it in a way that made it fun to learn. He said to
imagine the independent clause as Batman and the
dependent clause as Robin because batman can survive
on his own just like an independent clause whereas
Robin is the sidekick and he relies on Batman. This made
it fun and easy to learn.
In Maths we have been learning about multiplication,
division, addition, subtraction, fractions, decimals and
integers. We have also learnt how to do word problems
by focussing on the language, length and long division.
Many kids found long division hard but as we kept on
going and spending our lunches with Mr. Khreizat we got
the hang of it and had a lot of fun with long division.
In Science, we have been learning about sustainability
and how to grow an avocado in a sustainable
environment. We have learnt about how seaweed and salmon are grown, how they
go from the sea to your table and how they are farmed in a sustainable way.

How stress influences future behaviour For more than a century, scientists have known that acute stress activates the fight-or-flight response. When your life is
on the line, your body reacts instantly: your heart races, your breath quickens, and a cascade of hormones sets off
physiological changes that collectively improve your odds of survival.
More recently, scientists have come to understand that the fight-or-flight response takes a toll on the brain and the
body—particularly when stress is chronic rather than acute. Systems designed to handle transient threats also react to
stress that occurs again and again, for weeks, months, or years.
It turns out that poverty, abuse, and other forms of adversity repeatedly activate the fight-or-flight response, leading to
long-term effects on the immune system and brain, which in turn increase the risk for an array of illnesses, including
asthma, diabetes, arthritis, depression, and cardiovascular disease. Pioneering neuroscientist Bruce McEwen called this
burden of chronic stress “allostatic load.”
Ethnic studies scholar Jeff Duncan-Andrade has done a lot of thinking about how allostatic load plays out in the lives
of adolescents.
“What do students who’ve experienced chronic stress do in your classroom?” Jeff recently asked a group of experienced
teachers.
“Go to the bathroom!”
“Right,” said Jeff. “They escape. They look for ways out.”
Longitudinal research shows that when adolescents are exposed to increased stress—in the form of arguments between
their parents, say, or a friend moving away—they feel anxious and overwhelmed, which in turn predicts more impulsive
behavior.
After discovering allostatic load, McEwen dedicated himself to its undoing. Each time we met, he was excited to share
examples of how positive, supportive relationships with adults can protect against, or even reverse, the effects of chronic
stress.
Don’t assume you know what’s worrying the young people you care about.
Do ask. Jeff suggests making a two-column chart. List current worries on the left and available resources on the right. I
suggest you make your own list first and then invite the young people in your life to do the same. Then talk. And listen.
Why? Because what counters allostatic load are relationships that make you feel seen, heard, and loved.

Wests Non-Competitive Football Gala Day
On Thursday 12th of March, a group of Year 5 and 6 students attended the NRL Wests non-competitive tackle
football gala day. Students competed against several different schools throughout the day. Students
undertook a ‘safe tackling’ workshop on Tuesday 10th March with Daniel from the NRL and Lopini Paea, an
ex NRL Sydney Roosters player. It was great to see students use the skills and strategies learnt in their games.
Both teams did exceptionally well, with the girls’ team coming out as ‘most improved’ for the day.
Our most valuable players from the day were Yasmin El Samad and Ghassan Karaki. We look forward to
competing in the next competition in Term 2.

2021 Kindergarten Enrolments We are now securing enrolments for our 2021 Kindergarten classes. There has been a higher than usual demand for
Kindergarten places and before we offer interviews and placements to new families, we would like to give preference
to siblings of existing families currently attending the College.

STEP UP TO THE CHALLENGE!!!!
It is that time of the year once again, The Premier's Reading Challenge has commenced and students can join and be rewarded for their efforts
to gain knowledge and expand their literacy skills. The Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and
to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more
widely.
The Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) is available for all NSW students in Kindergarten to Year 9. If you need help using the website and the
answer cannot be found on the PRC Support site, please contact the PRC Support at [email protected] or speak with Bellfield College Librarian.
To enter the challenge, students must visit the following website and enter their username and password. Here they can register the books they
read from the PRC book list.
