Skating and Swimming

On Friday October 14th of 2011, a group of Chilliwack Mid-dle School students brought a hockey stick and puck. Approx. 37 students in total went swimming and skating. There was some-what alot of room to skate around because of how many students went there. Mr. Zielman, Ms. Cosens and Mme Ropain were the teachers who went skating and swimming. At the Landing Lei-sure Centre there no special things to use. The teachers didn’t go swimming. Everybody had a wonderful time and if this activity is happening, next year, we hope to see a lot more of this activity.

-Activity Day--Paintball-

On October 14, we had our famous Fall activity day. Paintball is one of the most popular activities and fills up the fastest. A group 50 CMS stu-dents went to Sniperz in Chilliwack. Each student was given 100 paint-balls to start and that adds up to 5000 paint-balls!!! Thats not includ-ing refills. Which were 100 paintballs for $7 dollars. We even had one of our grade 9 stu-dents referee the games. Thank you Zdravko Stanisavljevic for your amazing refing!! We

played 8 games and had an awesome time. Everyone was extremely tired on the way back home but It was extremely worth it. We played 2 games of Tag the Elk, 2 games of Eliminate the Enemy, 2 games of Capture the Flag, 1 game of Chase the Rabbit, and 1 game of Rezurection. The best game in my opinion was chase the rabbit. We had 3 teachers and 9 students on top of the mountain and 38 students going up the mountain. Everybody died on the teachers team except myself and Michael Fol-land by going down the

mountian and flanking the enemy. During the first couple of games, there happened to be the danger of friendly fire!! But then the teams smartened up and only fired at the enemy. Everybody at the end had paint all over their clothes and some had it on their arms and masks. The bus ride home was filled with laughter and talk of the days paint-ball matches. When we got to the school, we went to Mr. Hay’s room and waited for the bell. It was a good day.

Activity Daythe vancouver aquarium

On October 14th, Chilliwack Middle had their first activity day of the year. As usual, the Vancouver Aquarium was one of the

activities.

Art Roomby justin lo

At Chilliwack Middle School, we have a selection of fine arts, including our art room. We do a wide variety of projects, such as, paper mache, sketches, three-dimesional pic-tures, and lighting based-sketch-es. The teacher, Miss Grieman, teaches the art class on all these different types of art styles. In art, we are allowed to mingle as long as long as we are quiet and speak respectfully. we also are able to work on any project we please as long as we work the whole class and dont spend our time talking and too much mingling. in art we also get to learn new art skills and

enjoy it while we do. and ya. that is all styles that we can make when we grow older. It helps us find a hobby for the future and could help us find a future career.

Boobies Bracelets

The boobies bracelets were made for awarness for breast cancer and has became very popular in our community. In 2000, Shaney Jo Darden and Mona Mukherjea-Gehrig found-ed the Keep A Breast foundation in the grow-ing need for breast cancer awarness. Every time someone buys a boobies bracelet, the money goes to the breast cancer foundation and will raise money for breast cancer. This event has became a very cool and popular way of raising money and awarness for breast cancer.

FOOTBALLOR

FOOTBALL ?

Foorball is the most widely played sport in the USA and is one of the biggest sports in Canada. Approxi-mately 111 million people in the USA watch thne Super Bowl this past year. Most of the people who like Football that I talked to, say that Football requires more strength than soccer, but also a degree of skill. It takes alot of quick thinking to know what deke to use to get around an oncoming defender. Overall, from what i hear, Football is a physical sport that requires alot of skill and a huge fan base.

Brandon G. Grade 9: I prefer football because it’s more physical, and I like running away from defenders to score a touchdown.

Zdravko S. Grade 9: I love soccer. It requires more skill and I love deking around people.

Soccer also known as Football is currently the most widely known and played sport in the world. Approxi-mately 3 billion people either watch or play soccer worldwide. Every 4 years the FIFA World Cup is played, each time in a different location. The most recent is the World Cup in South Africa in 2010.

Most people who prefer Soccer say that it is the number 1 sport because unlike Football, it requires a more profound degree of skill. In Football there are few ways to deke around a defender while in Soccer, there is almost an infinite number of possi-bilities. In the end, apparently Soccer is a skillful sport that has alot of depth and the biggest fan base worldwide.

From what I hear Football is mucb more physical and that it is tougher, yet Soccer requires more skill and is the biggest sport worldwide.

Hockey Academy Hockey Academy 2011/12 is a great group of promising hockey players. The Academy has great forwards, defensemen, and four awesome and talented goalies. Everytime the players go on the ice they are completely different people, they are no longer your average CMS school students, but fierce hockey players, with a goal to achieve by the end of the year! Here are some interviews.

Questions: 1)How has Hockey Academy helped you improve and become a better hockey player?2)What is your favourite game or drill?3)If you could change something about the Academy, what would it be?4)What is long or short time goal for your hockey future?

Grade 8- player (forward)Eden Gustafson 1) There is lots of extra ice time and it helps keep my fitness up and become a better hockey player. 2) My favourite game is 1,2,3 shootout.3)The fact that girls don’t get their own changeroom.4) A long time goal would be going to university through a hockey scholarship.

Grade 7- goalieMitchell Davis1)The goalie coach Jeff gave me helpful tips, like where to put my glove.2) My favourite game is the russian scrimmage because I like the action and the breakaways.3) I would make there more time on the ice so we can practice longer.4)To get into the NHL and getting good grades.

Grade 9 - player(defenseman)Brendan Murphy1) It gives me extra ice time, for me to work on my skills and help me improve.2) 6 pass and 10 goals in 10 minutes are my favourite game and drill.3) I would start it later because I hate getting up early.4) To get into college hockey on a scholarship

Paintball Collage

Paintballing On Friday, October 14, 50 students and 3 teach-ers (Mr.Hay, Mr.Hodson and Mr.Adams) went to Sniperz paintball for Activity Day. All together they played 8 games.

They played 1 game of capture the Elk, 2 team death-matchs, 2 games of capture the flag, 2 capture the “Rab-bits” and 1 game ressurection game where the players got infinity lives(the point was for them to use up the rest of their paintballs). During the first game the referees seperated the experienced paintballers from the non-ex-perienced ones with the ex-perienced players defending the Elk(which was a piece of wood shaped like an elk propped up against a castle like fort. In team deathmatch one half of the students got green ribbons to tie on their painball guns so the play-ers were well distinguished. After two team deathmatchs the non-green team came out on top. Capture the flag was practically the same as team

deathmatch except to win you had to run the flag(t-shirt) to the enemy’s base. Mr.Hay, Mr.Hodson and Mt.Adams each picked around three students to be the “Rabbits” which the other students had to eliminate. Sadly they never accomplished that. At the end during the ressurec-tion game Christian Ron-ner had his lense popped out so they had to stop the game early and the referee ran Christian out with his hand’s over his eyes. Then the students took a bus back to the school to get picked up by their parents.

Science World Friday, October 14th of 2011, the Chilliwack Middle School population had an ac-tivity day; a select few chose to go to Science World. Extreme Dinosaurs was the main attraction. The students can dive into adventure and acquire information all about

dinosaurs. The 10,000 square foot exhibition shows 19 animatronic dinosaurs as well as 2 to scale skeletons. The dinosaurs come to life including the blinking of eyes, loud roars, gnawing of teeth and moving limbs. Although the attraction was Extreme Dinosaurs the IMAX video took a different route and took students into space to learn about the Hubble Space Telescope, and the universe.

About Ke$ha:

Kesha Rose Sebert, better known as Ke$ha, is an American singer-songwriter and rapper. In 2005, at 18, Ke$ha was signed to Dr. Luke's record label. Ke$ha’s big breakthrough came in early 2009 after appearing on Flo Rida's number one single, "Right Round." Her debut album, Animal and its re-release, Cannibal, were released in 2010. Ke$ha's irrev-erent music and image propelled her to immediate commercial success, with Animal debuting at number one in the US and pro-ducing two number one hits, "Tik Tok" and "We R Who We R", and a string of top ten hits as well.

Ke$ha Early life Kesha was born in Los An-geles, California on March 1, 1987. Her mother, Pebe Sebert, is a singer-songwriter who co-wrote a single in 1978. When Kesha was an infant, Pebe would often have to look after her onstage while performing. Kesha says she has no knowledge of her father's identity. Kesha's younger brother Louis was born shortly after. She said that she did not fit-in school, explaining that her unconventional dress sense including homemade pur-ple velvet pants and purple hair did not warm her to other stu-dents. The Seberts were fea-tured in an episode of The Sim-ple Life as the host family to Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie in 2005. Ke$ha later on described herself as being a dilageant child in school.

Behind the Scenes

You read our newsletters, but how exactly are they made? The process is quite

simple. At the beginning of the term, we first learn how to use the program on our com-

puters called Adobe InDesign that we use to make the individual pages. After we do that, we are told to write two pages each for the

newsletter,

either on a given topic or one we think of ourselves. We are encouraged to think

of our own topic in order to make the newsletter more interesting and unique. From there, we work on our pages with a group of about four people and make

sure they’re done by the end of the term.

Halloween Sugar CookiesDecorate them with icing after baking by using confectioners sugar, lemon juice and food coloring. Use black decorating gel to add detail.Cook Time: 9 minutesTotal Prep Time: 2h9 minutesIngredients: •5 tbsp butter, softened•3/4 cup sugar•1 egg•1 tsp vanilla extract•red and yellow food coloring (optional)•1 2/3 cups all-purpose flour•1 tsp baking powder•1/4 tsp salt

Preparation:In a large bowl, mix butter and sugar with an electric hand mixer until creamy. Add egg and vanilla, and food coloring (if using), mix well. In a medium bowl, whisk flour, baking powder and salt. Using a wooden spoon, gradually stir flour mixture into butter mixture until a stiff dough forms. Don’t worry if the dough appears crum-bly at first; it will come together.

Wrap dough in plastic and chill for 1-2 hours in the refrigerator. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough to a 1/4-inch or 1/8-inch thickness. Use Halloween-themed cookie cutters dipped in flour to make cutouts. Gather scraps and reroll until all the dough is used.

Place cookies on a parchment-lined cookie sheet. Bake for 9-10 minutes or until edges are lightly browned. Transfer to wire rack to cool.

Yield 30 cookies, depending on size of cookie cutters used.

Activity day~pAInTBALL~

on October 14th, 50 CMS students par-ticipated in paintball at our local family owned paintball buisness. We participated in 8 games, there was sev-eral hours of paintball excitement. The dif-ferent games were tag the Elk were there is a team of about twelve defending and another thirty attacking very few were left in the last 30 secounds which the games were deter-mind in the last thirty secounds. Then there was elimate the enemy there were two differ-

ent teams with even numbers and the ob-jective was to elimate the most amount of people on the oppo-site team in the time given. When it was north vs. south none were safe in the small amount of space given the objective was to take the “flag” and bring it to the enemys base this was almost an imposssible task, and lastly there was my favourite “hunt the rabbit” ther were two teams one was filled with the three teach-ers and nine students of there choice against the other forty-one students out of the

twelve only two stu-dents survived but they were well on there way of flanking the enemys who didnt notice them slip past them and move into position. At the end of the day we just unloaded are paintballs in receration were you can come back alive as many times as you wanted. All was good some people were lucky enough to get some welts to show-off. There were no serious inju-ries and most left with a smile on there face and I hope that everyone else had as much fun as I did in there selective activi-ties.

“Otters Holding Hands”

The Vancouver Aquarium is home of the cut little in-ternet hit “Otters Holding Hands” which has 16 million views on Youtube. So, I took advantage of Activity day to write about the otters in this video... Nyac and Milo. Nyac was a female otter who sadly past away at 20 years on September, 23 2008 from chronic lymphocytic leuke-mia (CLL). CLL is one of the most common leukemias for humans. It’s when you ave cansers and your white blood cells and it effect b-cells in the bone marrow. Nyac was 6 months old when she sur-vived the Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989. The Vancou-ver Aquarium took her in to monitor her progess and study long-term chronic ef-fects on sea otters due to oil cantamonation.

Milo is the other otter and re-courses say that milo has been diagnosed with lymphoma and had his first chemo therapy ses-sion two months ago. He is now curently being switched between tanks. One where he can rest and the main otter tank where he can play with the other otters.

I love otters!
