Term 1 Week 5 22 February, 2018

Mission Beach State School

We would like to acknowledge the Djiru people and the sacredness of the land on which our school is built

From the Principal

Tully District Rugby League and Netball Carnival

Next Friday a number of our children will be travelling in to Tully to

participate in the district selection carnival for both of these sports.

Selected children will be invited to participate in a regional carnival as

part of a Tully District team. In previous years, Mission Beach has had

representatives in both of these sports at the regional level. I know they

will participate fully and commit to representing our school to the best of

their ability next week. Good luck to all participants.

Banana Festival

Response to our request for support to organise the Banana Festival for

2018 was not forthcoming to a level that would allow the successful

organisation without unreasonable load on a few people. Therefore it has

been decided that the Banana Festival will not be run this year.

As this is the major fundraiser for our P&C, a number of the support

activities normally provided by the P&C may have to be reduced.

Parent Contact Details

It is really important, for the welfare of your child(Ren), that your contact

details are kept up to date. When we need to contact parents for a child

and we cannot get hold of anyone, the child can become very distressed.

Please ensure that all contact details held by the school are current.

Out of Hours Access to the school

Just a reminder to parents that children are not permitted on the school

grounds out of normal hours unless accompanied by a responsible adult.

This also applies to high school students.

Our grounds can be used by you and your children at any time, as long as

these guidelines are met. Access permission is not required at this stage.

Lunches for Children

When you send lunches to school with your children, we expect them to

either eat the lunch you have provided or take it home so that you know

what they have eaten during the day. We discourage the sharing of food

so that you know what your child has eaten and that the food they have is

suitable for them. With increasing numbers of children in our school with

specific food allergies and/or intolerances this is becoming even more

important. Please remind your children that the food you send is for them

and them alone and that they should not be sharing food with anyone or

bringing anything that you have not provided for them.

Bus Travel/Behaviour

The majority of our children travel to and from school on school buses. At the bus stops and on the busses,

the children are expected to self-regulate their behaviour. The driver’s job is to drive and not try to manage

children’s behaviour at the same time. Every time the driver’s attention is pulled away from his job, every

child on the bus is placed at risk.

I would request that all parents of children travelling on school buses remind children of the rules and the

need to behave appropriately on the bus and at all stops,

Children need to remain seated at all times when the bus is moving.

They must wait in their seats until the bus has completely stopped and the door has opened before

moving to hop off at any stop including school.

They need to speak quietly with the person beside them to reduce the noise level as much as possible.

They must get off at the correct stop and wait, if they are crossing the road, until the bus is far

enough away for children to see any approaching cars and for drivers to see them.

At school we try to promote respectful and responsible behaviour at all times and this includes when

children are unsupervised on school buses.

Please help us to make bus travel as safe and as comfortable as possible by reinforcing these simple rules

with your children.

If any parents are able to be present at bus stops, this helps to maintain good behaviour at these places

greatly.

Parents and Citizens Association Annual General Meeting

The next meeting of our P&C Association is on Tuesday, March 13 at 6:00 p.m. in the meeting room in the

hall. The AGM will precede a general monthly meeting. All parents are urged to attend these meetings. As

well as providing financial support to the school, the P&C is the most appropriate forum to find out what is

happening in the school and to have a voice in the way things are done here. The more parents we have

attending the meetings, the better the decisions made reflect our school community views.

Come along and be part of this valuable organisation.

Regards,

Gordon

Class Room News

Our first attempts in Year 1 with some Imaginative Writing using the sentence

starter: “I opened the door and….”

I opened the door and I fell through a magic floor. Then I opened another door and I saw a unicorn. I climbed back up to the door again. By Melodie I opened the door and I saw a crocodile and we got to feed it! By Angus I opened the door and I was at Magnetic Island at a shop and I saw a robber. He was stealing lots and lots of stuff and there was treasure there. There was tons more stuff and they stole almost everything. By Sachin I opened the door to a unicorn and Fairyland and it was in the clouds. Then I made a cloud house and I hopped out of the door. I saw a fairy and I had a wish. Then I opened another door and I went back. It was night and I went to sleep. By Caylah

YEAR 2 NEWS

In English we are now looking at characters in stories and learning how to write a paragraph. In Mathematics we have been concentrating on time – telling the time (1/2 past and o’clock), months of the year, days of the week. Telling the time is something that needs to practised at home and school. So please remember to ask you child what time is it at different times of the day e.g. when eating dinner, when going to bed etc. We have started our Science unit which is called “Toy Factory”. The classes enjoyed looking at everyone’s favourite toy and discovering how they moved. WEEKLY TIP: Did you know that the brain is 75% water? The brain must be adequately hydrated to facilitate learning.

Indonesian News

Mission Beach is preparing for the Queen's Baton relay for the Commonwealth Games. As a part of our celebrations on March 17 (time TBA) we are putting together a choir of keen singers from Mission Beach and practise will be in the Arts building at Mission Beach State School.

Postcards from Indonesia. In December last year LOTE classes across the Ulysses Cluster of schools participated in a postcard exchange with students from Indonesia. Each school prepared and sent a postcard to the ‘Festival Cerita Jakarta’ (Story Festival in Jakarta) and last week our replies arrived! Our students in class have been very excited to read and translate their post cards. Following is the postcard received by our school and a

translation of what is written. Good Day, Hello, my name is Zaifa and I am 9 years old. I’m from Jakarta. In Jakarta there are a lot of birds. My address is 10 Lontar St, 5 Mangga St. I go to Tugu Utara 22 State School and I’m in grade 3. There are 6 classes in my school. When I grow up I want to be a policewoman. My

hobby is cooking. In Jakarta it is the rainy season. Don’t forget to write back.

Salam hangat,

SPORTS NEWS

Tully District Swimming Carnival On Friday 9th February Mission Beach State School had a large number of students represent their school at the 2018 Tully District Swimming Championships. Our swimmers displayed ‘pride and effort’ throughout the evening and for the first time in many years Mission Beach finished third place in overall point score. Well done to all our swimmers who competed at the carnival. Special mention goes to Lucy Chilcott 9 years girls age champion, Oliver Rampton 11 years boys age champion and his brother Ashley Rampton 12 years boys age champion. Fantastic effort from these students. Congratulations.

Tennis in Mission Beach Mission Beach State School was successful in its application to enable certified Tennis Australia coach Evan Fielder to work with our students for 4 weeks this term. The students have really enjoyed the first week of this programme and are looking forward to developing skills over the next few weeks.

Class 2B enjoying a day of Tennis during HPE classes
