Principals’ message
I am a firm believer that every child and every key
person in their life, possess the qualities which are
essential to success: sincerity, honesty, humility,
courtesy, understanding and charity.
The challenging thing about it though, is that
sometimes we just don’t dig far enough below the
surface to unlock the true potential within. Though
our successes will be as diverse as we are as
individuals, and our failures, and mistakes may at
times seem overwhelming, who we are as a person
and how we treat ourselves and others is at the core
of how successful we will be.
“Treat others as you would want to be treated… for
the best index to a person’s character is how they
treat people who can’t do them any good, and
how they treat people who can’t fight back.”
Wellbeing
On the playground and in the classrooms, we
encourage children to practise self-awareness and
resilience skills, with support from staff.
The staff at Jewells Primary listen to children and
encourage them to acknowledge their emotions
and find a solution to the way they are feeling. It is
important for children seek out staff at the time they
are having difficulty with social interactions – this is
the most effective way to teach them the social skills
they need to work on.
At times, children will come home and discuss
experiences they are having on the playground or
at school. To support the mental health and
resilience of your child in
these times it is important to be calm and to not be
reactive and emotional. They are learning to
interact with others and need support and
understanding. Listen to and encourage your child
to acknowledge their feelings and speak about
them. Ask them and guide them on how they could
deal with it differently if it happens again.
Encourage them to tell the person to stop first and if
they don’t stop, then to go to the teacher.
Of course, if they are coming home constantly
speaking of any issues please make an
appointment with their classroom teacher to
discuss what is happening. This is a calm and
respectful way to support the wellbeing of all in our
community.
Attendance Matters…every school day counts!
Attendance at school and being on time everyday
has a huge impact on a child’s learning and helps
to ensure personal success.
As part of the monitoring procedures for the
Department of Education, parents and carers may
receive a letter informing them of their child’s poor
rate. This letter is a statutory requirement. The letter
will invite you to attend a meeting to discuss any
problems you may be experiencing and share
ideas in which we can work together to achieve an
acceptable level of attendance.
My aim is to work with the schooling community to
maintain, if not improve, a 95% attendance rate for
our children.

External Service Providers
With improved supports made available through
NDIS, many parents and external service
providers are seeking for their child to receive
additional support during school hours. This
support may include Speech and
Occupational Therapy. I am extremely happy to
endorse any additional support service delivery
through the school, but advise that before
service delivery can take place, parents need to
ensure that their NDIS service provider contacts
the school firstly to discuss their required
documentation.
P&C
The P&C AGM will be held on Wednesday 1st April
at 6.30pm in the school library. At the AGM, all
positions will be declared vacant, with the
opportunity for people to nominate for a position
on the school P&C executive committee and/or
sub committees.
All interested persons are welcome and encour-
aged to attend.
Road Safety
Recent issues regarding activity around
pedestrian crossings, car parking areas and road
safety has resulted in communication with
rangers and highway patrol. They will strategically
monitor the area and look to enforce safe
behaviours around the school.
Enjoy your week ahead.

Get involved in the School Banking program
Jewells Primary School is excited to offer the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program to
all students.
School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for young Australians to learn about money and
develop good savings habits. Children who deposit money into their Youthsaver account through School
Banking earn Dollarmites tokens, which they can save up and redeem for exciting rewards.
The rewards available during 2020 are:
Terry Denton’s Activity Book
Mini Soccer Ball (size 2)
Treetop Stationary Set
Treetop Handball
Tomato Seed Kit
Magic Mist Drink Bottle
Emoji Wallet
Snakes & Ladders Game
School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives a Regular Savers Contribution
of $5 for every 10 deposits processed per student as well as an Annual Contribution which is based on the
number of students who made at least one School Banking deposit in the prior year.
Getting involved in School Banking is easy!
All you need to get involved in the School Banking program is a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver
account. You can open an account for your child in one of two ways:
1. Online
Visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking and click on the link to open a Youthsaver account.
2. In branch
Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself and your child, like a driver’s licence
and birth certificate.
If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account they can start banking straight
away. They just need to bring their deposit in every week on School Banking day using their Dollarmites
deposit wallet.
School Banking day is Tuesday. If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2020 School Banking
program information pack from the school office or visit www.commbank.com.au/schoolbanking
