Arabic @ GEPS It is almost half way through the year! Time flies when you are having fun!

At Granville East we teach basic Arabic through the Personal Development and Health (PDHPE) syllabus. Each student who comes from an Arabic background receives 2 hours a week. One hour and twenty minutes in class and 40 minutes of fitness, focusing on fundamental movement skills. Students enjoy learning various terms and songs that are related to our topics.

The Community Language program does not teach any Islamic content. If you have any questions about our Community Language program, please come and speak to Mr Zereka and Mr Mohamed. Here is a timetable of when your child has Arabic and fitness. Please remind them to wear their sports shoes on that day. Below are some photos of proud moments in our Arabic classrooms.

EGYPT

Home to one of the oldest and most influential civilizations on the planet, Egypt is a treasure trove of history and culture. DuringTerm 1, students from Early Stage 1 to Stage 3 discovered significant facts about Egypt’s ancient history and culture.

Students used their research skills to investigate information about the location of Egypt, its population, food and agriculture. Students learnt about the importance of the Nile River to the Ancient Egyptians and how archaeology helps us find out evidence about Egypt’s past.

The discovery of the Giza Pyramids was the highlight for many students because it unveiled interesting evidence about how the ancient pyramids were built 4650 years ago. Many stories were shared, posters were fin-ished and collaborative research tasks were completed during this term.

We had a blast!

FIJI Fiji boasts an environment of pristine beauty.

In Term 2, students from Early Stage 1 to Stage 3 learnt important information and facts about Fiji and its unique culture.

Many students chose to undertake individual research to investigate ten interesting facts about the country. Stage 3 students presented their findings using SWAY or Powerpoint.

Fiji’s 330 island resorts amazed students as they sought to undertake further research to discover the most popular island resort. Documentaries were watched and posters were created. Students really enjoyed it.

Indonesia with Mr Zereka

At the beginning of this year, I was fortunate to be chosen to participate in a two weeks exchange program to Indonesia through the Australia-Indonesia Muslim Exchange Program. What an experience it was!

We visited the Australian Embassy in Jakarta, schools, government organisations, different places of worship and much more. This experience has deepened my understanding of the way people live in our neighbouring country and it gave me an opportunity to talk about our school at the various meetings I attended.

I couldn’t wait to come back to GEPS and share my experience with the staff and students. We learnt about Indonesia in Term 1 and a different groups of kids from Stage 1 to 3 are learning about it this term as well. We were also very fortunate to have the Indonesian delegates who visited Australia to come to our school and see the amazing things that are happening across the school, especially in our Indonesia JELO class. They were extremely impressed with our students and how much they have learnt. They also shared a morning tea with the staff.

Marini wrote:

The students were really impressive. They knew a few things about Indonesia. They also asked lots of questions. Hope they visit Indonesia one day!

Dita wrote:

It was my pleasure to share about Indonesia with the students. Their reaction when they saw a photo of me with Komodo dragon was priceless. Students asked many interesting questions. I wish them all the best in their future endeavours.

Emil wrote:

Thank you for having us at your school. It is a wonderful school and lovely students. I am very impressed with the critical questions, their curiosity and the rooms which are very thematic.

LEARNING ABOUT SYRIA AND INDIGENOUS

AUSTRALIA

In Term 1, students have been learning about the various eras of early Syrian history. Some of the topics that were covered include:

Phoenician/Canaanite culture Islamic civilisation The Crusades

The Middle Ages

This term, we are looking at the history of the Indigenous peoples of Australia prior to European settlement.

My aim is to raise awareness about Indigenous culture and celebrate it across the stages as a way to address the challenges we see today. As we learn about Indigenous culture, we can begin to relate to each other better, recognise the cultural history of this land and value the ongoing, rich cultural legacy of this place that we call home.

In my JELO class last term, students have learnt about The United Arab Emirates. They have learnt about its traditional culture, heritage, language, economy, government and society.

Throughout the term, students were divided into small groups and were using technology to gather relevant information about UAE. They were working cooperatively and supporting each other to present their project by the end of the term. Students were also given a booklet to complete throughout the term to guide their learning and expand their knowledge about the UAE. This term in JELO, students have been learning about China. They are excited to start their project and expand their knowledge about this country.
