Week 8 Can you believe it is Week 8 already in what has been a very interesting year for us all? Below you will see some guidelines that further explain some recent changes as we begin to return to more ‘normal’ operations. Thank you for your support as we have navigated this and for your understanding even when you may not like each decision. The students have continued to work hard over the past two weeks and I have had many visitors come to show me their work and learning they are proud of. I have recently been sharing an image and providing positive feedback via Seesaw. You may have received a message on Seesaw to share how proud we are of the student’s work. For any families, still yet to connect to the family side of Seesaw, please contact the office if you need support. Guidelines for Schools School activities return and a timeline has been provided following a recent update from the NSW Department of Education. I thought I would share the specifics below. I have also attached a PDF document for your reference. Additional advice is also available of the NSW Department of Education Website. I have removed the High School specific information that does not apply to our setting. Activities/site usage that can already take place: •Use the school library •Engage in non-contact sporting activities •Canteens and uniform shops can open at principal’s discretion Activities/site usage that can take place from Monday 15 June 2020

•School assemblies (limited to 15 minutes and no external visitors)

•Choirs and performing arts at school, with safety protocols in place

•Students may attend other schools for essential curriculum related reasons or placements (e.g. auditions or

placement tests)

•Hydrotherapy pools can be used

•Incursions/external providers can provide activities that support delivery of curriculum (e.g. music tutors, sport

skills development programs, science demonstrations, drama tutors, Healthy Harold).

•Community use activities used by students such as dance classes, and student sport skills development, outside

of school hours with limited adult attendance)

•Day field trips to outdoor locations with no physical distancing requirements can take place (e.g. DoE

Environmental Education Centres and sport and recreation facilities, trips to local river to collect water samples)

•Face-to-face TAFE attendance (see TAFE website for further information)

•School photos

•Department of Community and Justice services and programs

Activities/site usage that can take place from beginning of Term 3 •All school sport and activities including competitions aligned with current health advice (including those activities run by external organisations) •Inter-school student events and competitions (choirs, sport, debating, public speaking, performing arts, Selective Sports High School trials etc) •SRE/SEE lessons •P&C meetings – with a strong preference for on-line where possible •Parent/teacher meetings – where these need to take place – strong preference for on-line where possible unless involving serious matters that require face to face discussion •Community use activities involving general adult attendance (such as community markets).

Activities under consideration from Term 3 The following events will be reconsidered in Term 3. For now these events must remain on hold.

•School camps (we have made arrangements for our senior camp and Yr 4 camp, with the expectation that these

will proceed)

•Excursions (other than field trips explained above)

•Parent attendance at assemblies and other school events (e.g. graduation ceremonies or student speech events)

•Parent volunteers – e.g. parent reading helpers (note: canteen and uniform shop volunteers are permitted)

•Interstate excursions

•School-based activities that involve large gathering of adults are not permitted at this time. These include

parent/community gatherings such as parent functions, working bees, fundraisers, school BBQs, large parent

information evenings, and large on-site cultural events. These large gatherings will continue to be reviewed and

assessed based on AHPPC and NSW Health advice and may be permitted at a later date.

Activities that are cancelled, delayed or not permitted

•Certain large arts and sports events are cancelled or delayed because they require feeder activities and have

long-lead time organisational arrangements.

•International excursions are cancelled until further notice.

Defibrillator Following a lengthy process of discussion in P&C, staff consultation and risk management, our school has purchased a defibrillator for availability should it be required. This will be installed in a cabinet in the hall for use by school and any community use visitors to our site. As part of the process, staff voted unanimously to the purchase and will continue to have annual training in its use. I know this is welcome news for a number of our families who had raised this as an issue. Assemblies While we are not yet able to conduct whole school or large group assemblies, we decided to complete a live ‘virtual’ assembly on Friday using Zoom. Due to a couple of privacy implications where all students are visible within the live environment, we are, unfortunately, not able to televise or broadcast this online. Mobile Phones I would like to take the opportunity to remind families about our mobile device procedures for the department. I had shared this in 2019 and again at the start of the year. The use of digital devices by primary school students (personal or school provided) must be restricted during class, recess and lunch unless: • approved by a teacher or principal for an educational purpose • use forms part of a reasonable adjustment for student learning and wellbeing • an exemption has been granted for other reasons. We know that digital devices present a new challenge for schools, teachers, parents and carers and students. We also know that if used inappropriately, they may put young people at risk and can be a distraction from their learning and engagement. The learning, wellbeing and safety of our students is a priority, which is why we are restricting the use of digital devices, including mobile phones, in our primary schools. More information can be found at: https://education.nsw.gov.au/about-us/strategies-and-reports/our-reports-and-reviews/mobile-devices-in-schools. Any use of mobile phones and smart watches by a student, that is in breach of our rules, will lead to the confiscation of the device. In this instance, parents will be notified and confiscated devices will need to be collected from the Administration office by the student’s parent or guardian at the end of the day. Specifically, at CBPS, our technology agreement states, ‘If ever I need to bring my mobile phone to school, I agree to hand my device into the school office at the beginning of the day, prior to 8:55am and collect at the office after the school bell.’ Please encourage your child to leave their device in the front office and collect at the end of the

day. Students are familiar with this process and the majority do the right thing each day. We also encourage parents to refrain from contacting their children on their mobile device during school hours.

Works Our renewal and improvements are continuing to progress, with the Kinder and Stage 1 toilets due for completion in the next week. Our sports shed now has all of the resourcing organised and has freed up some space in other locations for storage. This has allowed us to empty the containers and these will shortly be removed, further opening up the back playground and allowing the addition of our Support Unit breakout zone. Gardening Club Our gardening area is going from strength to strength. I hope some of your children have been excited about this at home. We certainly have had many eager students helping to plant seeds, set up the garden beds, organise the garden shed and set up the new worm farm. We have even had a frog come to check it out. Here are some of the images:

Opportunity Class Placement Year 5 2021 Changes to the opportunity class placement process for 2020 Year 4 students were advised in the previous newsletter but I thought I would share again now. The closest OC class in our area is at Wyong Public School. The 2021 Year 5 opportunity class placement process was put on hold in April 2020 due to the COVID-19 situation. More information can be found in the previous newsletter or at: https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5

Have a great week of learning CBPS.
