Term 2 Week 9 Thursday, 29th June 2017
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents and Carers,
As we continue to reflect on brain functioning we think about the effects of gratitude on
our brains and therefore quality of life. Gratitude is a feeling of thankfulness and joy in
response to something we’ve received such as a book we look forward to reading, a smile
of encouragement or a breathtaking view of a landscape. By simply focusing for a minute
on the experiences in our lives we’re grateful for, this shifts our thinking to a calmer, more
content perspective, which can immediately uplift and comfort us. When gratitude
becomes a regular practice we train our brain to shift to a positive mind-set more
efficiently and maintain a healthier, more optimistic view of life. For some people gratitude
seems to come more naturally but we can all train our brains to be more grateful. Perhaps
this week you might want to be mindful of the times you give and receive kindness and
gratitude.
As we head towards the school holidays I hope you are able to enjoy some quality time
with your children during the school break. I know many of them are looking forward to
having time to recover completely from the winter colds and spend time with family and
friends.
Kind regards
Anne McGowan Anne McGowan - Principal

Athletics Carnival
On Thursday June 15th a group of 42 students from Years 4 – 7 competed in the Catholic Schools Athletics Carnival at Santos Stadium. Students enjoyed the high standard of competition on the day and participated enthusiastically. A very special thanks to Gabby Stradling who worked tirelessly as an official throughout the day. It was also encouraging to see other parents there to support students on the day. Congratulations to all students who participated.
At the end of a long day both the girls and boys managed to finish 4th in their division. The under 12 girls also won their section. Darren Chhay performed extremely well, winning Age Champion for Senior Boys which was a great achievement.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL NEWS
KidsMatter
With this newsletter there is a KidsMatter article with suggestions for families to support the
development of both younger and older children’s friendship skills. The article recommends that
parents supervise media and internet use. Early next term the Year 6/7 students will participate in a
workshop with the South Australian Police to look at Cyber Safety. We have also asked SAPOL to
present a session for all parents. We have booked a Cyber Safety Workshop for parents on the evening
of 22nd August, commencing at 6.30 pm. Please put the date in your diary. I will send out an invitation
in Term 3.
Assembly
Please join us next Wednesday morning for a coffee outside the Uniform Shop and then in the Emmaus
Centre for our final Assembly this term. The Year 4/5 students will host the Assembly with a focus on
NAIDOC Week. The Coin Challenge certificates will be presented to the class with the longest coin line
and to the class with the line of most value. We hope to see you there.

NAIDOC WEEK– Sunday 2nd-Sunday 9th July
The theme of NAIDOC week this year is ‘Our Languages Matter’. There were over 250 indigenous dialects in Australia on first
contact with European settlers and only 120 remain today, the survival of which is dependent on a dwindling number of elders
being able to pass on the languages, stories and cultures of their particular group. The following is a quote from the National
NAIDOC Committee Co-Chair Anne Martin about the importance of language to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, “Aboriginal
and Torres Strait languages are not just a means of communication, they express knowledge about everything: law, geography, history, family
and human relationships, philosophy, religion, anatomy, childcare, health, caring for country, astronomy, biology and food. Each language is
associated with an area of land and has a deep spiritual significance and it is through their own languages, that Indigenous nations maintain
their connection with their ancestors, land and law.”
If you would like more information about NAIDOC week or any of the
events that are occurring in South Australia or nationally, please visit
the website: http://www.naidoc.org.au/
Seasons for Growth
Seasons for growth is a grief and loss program where students
learn skills to help them cope in times of grief and loss. This could
be due to:
a death in the family,
family separation or divorce,
friends moving interstate or to another school/location,
leaving their country of origin and moving to a new one
eg Refugees.
The program is run in small groups where children can learn from
each other. It does not provide counselling or therapy for students.
If you or your child think that this program would be of benefit,
please let me know.
Parish Visitation
Six of our Year 7 students took part in the Archbishop’s
Visitation to the St Margaret Mary’s Parish last week by
talking to Mrs Teresa Lynch and Mrs Heather Carey about
their experience at St Margaret Mary’s School. This was a
great way for our young leaders to provide feedback to the
Archbishop. We thank Beau, Marni, Skye and Nancey for their
willingness to be a part of this initiative.

Sincere Thank You – Visitation by the Archbishop
Thank you to all parishioners who were involved in the Pastoral visitation to the Parish by Archbishop Wilson and his Team.
Our visitors covered many aspects of our parish life – the three schools, including the Special Learning Unit at St Patrick’s
and the Pre-School at St Margaret Mary’s, the Bene Nursing Home, some aged in their homes, meeting with the Parish
Pastoral Council, the Religious Sisters, the Special Ministers of Holy Communion to the sick, frail and aged, St Vincent de
Paul and Mercy Care representatives. 80 parishioners came to the Wednesday evening parish meeting, and 5 parishioners
spoke of their experience of the parish and their questions/anxieties for the future. 35 youth and young adults met with the
Archbishop on Sunday afternoon and 5 presentations were made.
The Archbishop celebrated our 10.30am Mass as well as the Vietnamese Sunday night Mass. Refreshments followed that
Mass and the Archbishop was the last to leave! He also enjoyed the sausage sizzle with the youth. We thank all who
prepared food for the various gatherings.
Before the Visitation a comprehensive report on the parish was prepared, which included input from the Parish Pastoral
Council, schools staff and other parishioners.
All of this happened while the parish office staff were battling with the flu at various stages of infection. My sincere thanks to
Fr Long Hai, Paula Noujaim and Helen McPhee for battling on so valiantly.
Chancellor Mrs Heather Carey in an email on Wednesday said, “the diversity of people and groups and the active involvement and joy of commitment were just wonderful to experience.”

Perseverance really does pay off – congratulations to the Under 9 team who had their first win for the season! You have
improved so much and your coaches are very proud of your efforts.
Term 3 and 4 notes have gone home to many interested basketballers, but we are in desperate need of coaches. If you
can help out, but are unsure, please let me know as I can assist you in coaching and there are coaching clinics and
manuals available. No coaches, means no teams.
A huge thank you to the coaches and managers for this season: Paul and Mel Byham, Ciaran Wunderer and Jennifer
O’Shea, Damien Guerin and Shaa Daley. Your commitment, guidance and organisation have been invaluable!

Just a quick note before the end of Term. During Term 3 we are hoping to run a craft club after school and perhaps even the popular percussion group offered by Mr Hillard. Thank you to Mrs Didge for running the knitting club, Dr Lekkas for running the Healthy Smiles for Life - Oral Health Workshop and to Priya (Maneet’s Mum) for offering to run our Craft Club next term. We will also be celebrating the graduations of several students in September.
