Dear Parents It was good to see everyone back this week ready for a new term. After the holidays there is a renewed energy around the school and staff and students are already busy and engaged in the work of learning and teaching. Thank you for all your efforts to ensure your children are in full uniform and well equipped for their learning. Your support is greatly appreciated. Haircuts - Our parent handbook sets out guidelines for uniform, hair and jewellery. Please assist us in ensuring all students know and understand our expectations in these areas. With regards to hairstyles we ask that they are not of an extreme nature and become a focus of attention. Please ensure that your child has a haircut that is neat and tidy and is of natural colour. Tracks shaved into short hair are considered to be extreme in nature. Today I have spoken to the children and reminded them not to wear such styles during term time.

STRATEGIC RENEWAL - Internal Review This term Siena will undertake the annual internal review of some of our school’s priority components as part of Siena’s strategic renewal plans. Each year we review a number of the components to ensure all are reviewed within a five-year renewal cycle. 2016 is the final year in this cycle and Brisbane Catholic Education will shortly release the new strategic renewal framework to commence in 2017.

In 2016 we are reviewing the following components: Evangelisation and Faith Formation, Curriculum Design and Implementation, Responding to the Diverse Needs of Learners, Work Culture and Strategic Information Management. As part of these reviews you may be asked to respond to a survey or surveys. Your input will be most valuable and I ask that if you are invited to participate you take the opportunity to be part of this process.

Siena is also part of a wider Brisbane Catholic Education project on enhancing our Catholic Identity. To assist us in enhancing Catholic Identity at Siena certain recommendations were made as a result of the local surveys in 2014 and the school has set some annual goals across a three-year period. As part of our local review processes we will also be looking at how the school has been able to work with some of these recommendations. Over the past 12 months or more the focus has been on creating visible signs of our Catholic Identity within the school environment, the significance of Catholic Christian symbols and staff professional development, particularly around scriptural texts and faith formation. These review processes are an important part of ensuring Siena continues to promote a strong Catholic ethos and provide quality education for all students.

Tomorrow is the Athletics Carnival for years four to six, best wishes to all students competing.

As we commence another term let us pray for everyone in the weeks ahead. Especially students, staff and parents who are ill or suffering in some way.

“May you meet God in every place, in every person and in the depths of your own heart.“ Jan Sutch Pickard

Grandparents’ Day On Friday 29 July we will celebrate all our wonderful Grandparents. Our Siena Grandparents are invited to join us from midday where they will be greeted by our Year 6 students who will direct them to the classrooms of their grandchildren. At 1.00pm we will gather in the Daintree to acknowledge and bless our Grandparents. Afternoon tea will be provided from 1.40pm – 2.00pm. Grandparents are then invited to leave.

I would appreciate you sending in a photo of your child’s grandparents to be included as part of the assembly. Please email a photo to: [email protected]

NAIDOC Week Last week our country celebrated NAIDOC week. Today we acknowledged this significant celebration during our assembly. This year’s NAIDOC theme is The living narrative of our nation.

For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, the Dreamtime describes a time when the earth, people and animals were created by our ancestral spiritual beings. They created the rivers, lakes, plants, land formations and living creatures.

Dreaming tracks crisscross Australia and trace the journeys of our ancestral spirits as they created the land, animals and lores. These dreaming tracks are sometimes called ‘Songlines’ as they record the travels of these ancestral spirits who 'sung' the land into life.

These Songlines are recorded in traditional songs, stories, dance and art. They carry significant spiritual and cultural connection to knowledge, customs, ceremony and Lore of many Aboriginal nations and Torres Strait Islander language groups.

Through songs, art, dance and ceremony, Torres Strait Islanders also maintain creation stories which celebrate their connection to land and sea.

Through learning more about Songlines and how they connect people to Country and the Country to people – we celebrate the rich history and diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures - the oldest continuing cultures on the planet.

Chess Chess will begin again for the term next week in the library. Payment will be made by Direct Debit from now on – please do not send cash. Direct Debit information will be available next week. Cost is as follows: $60 per Term; $100 for 2 children; $120 for 3 or more.

On Tuesday August 23 there will be an Interschool Chess Competition at the Kawana Community Centre. More details to follow.

Welcome back to the second half of the school year. It was wonderful walking around the school yesterday morning seeing the big smiles on the student’s faces as they reconnected with friends and shared some of their holiday stories. There were also quite a few smiles on teacher’s faces but the biggest smiles seemed to belong to many of the parents walking out of the school grounds after doing the morning drop off.

2016 Athletics’ Carnivals Each year we hold two separate athletics’ carnivals. The P-3 day was a huge success at the end of last term and parents are most welcome at our Year 4-6 carnival being held on Thursday at USC. More details below

Beyond the Classroom The Junior Writers Club is conducting a short story competition for children aged 8-12 years. If this is of interest to your children go to www.juniorwritersclub.com.au or check out the attached flyer for more details.

More Lateral Thinking Puzzles for The Family These puzzles are designed as a form of game where one person knows the answer and the others have to figure out the answer by asking questions. The questions can only be answered by yes, no or does not matter. (but clues can be given to help!) These puzzles encourage questioning, imagination, reasoning and lateral thinking. I loved using these puzzles when I was in the classroom and with my own boys around the dinner table or on long car trips.

Q: A man and a woman were playing tennis. They played 5 sets and each won 3 sets. How did they do this? A: The were partners playing doubles.

Q: A man was not wearing a parachute when he jumped out of a plane. He landed on hard ground but was unhurt. Why? A: The plane was parked on the runway.

Q: A mountain climber in the Himalayas took along with him two mountain guides. After a few hours, one of the guides fell into a deep crevasse. The climber and the other guide continued the climb and did not raise the alarm. Why? A: One of the guides was a book.

At the beginning of this new term guide us to be your hands and feet within our Siena Community.

At the beginning of this new term remind us to love others as you love us, treating all members of our Siena Community with respect.

At the beginning of this new term encourage us to pray for those in need, thinking of the needs of others within our Siena Community.

Amen

All the best for the week ahead. Please don’t hesitate to ask if you feel I can support you or your children to more fully access the opportunities we provide here at Siena.

Tip of the week - Praise, praise, praise - if you have achieved your goal while playing at home, give yourself a pat on the back. Well done!

Sunshine Coast Catholic Schools Choral Spectacular - To celebrate choral music in our schools, the PRIMARY CHOIR will join together with seven other Catholic schools from across the Sunshine Coast here at Siena in Daintree on Monday 25 July for a choral workshop with master conductor Thomas Keenan. Students will be involved in workshops during the day, culminating in a twilight concert featuring the choirs of each school and the massed workshop choir. We are truly very fortunate to have Thomas's talents brought to us here on the coast and this is a rare opportunity not to be missed. We encourage as many families as possible to attend what promises to be a wonderful culminating concert (4.30pm - 6.00pm), of magical young voices.

Permission slips have been emailed home this week to all families involved with a reply requested by Monday 18 July.

Instrumental and Singing lessons started on Monday this week and all enrolled families were emailed their lesson timetable for the term. Please print a copy for the lesson folder, one for the fridge at home and one for the classroom. If you didn’t receive the email, it means we do not have your current email address. Please contact us at [email protected] and your details will be updated and your timetable emailed out. Include your child’s name, instrument and music teacher.

All ensemble also started this week for our choral and instrumental groups and it is imperative that your child is at all rehearsals to ensure important information is not missed. All groups have a busy term of performances ahead and preparation is the key to confident and positive outcomes.

Students carrying their own school bag and equipment. Getting your children to carry their own school bag teaches them important skills, especially in terms of thinking about what is essential for their day at school.

Having your child pack and carry their own school bag encourages them to be independent across many areas of development. By children learning to plan forward regarding their day, they also learn responsibility for other equipment (e.g. sporting equipment and musical instruments).

Medical experts say children should carry backpacks that weigh no more than 20 per cent of their body weight to avoid lower back pain and associated problems. If the backpack weighs more than 20 percent of your child’s body weight, determine which contents can stay at home and what can go.

Always ensure your child is wearing the shoulder straps on both shoulders so the weight is evenly distributed.

Tomorrows Athletics Carnival is the culmination of all of the training and preparation students did last term during PE lessons. The Year 4 - 6 Athletics Carnival is a competitive carnival whilst still being fun and promoting the importance of being a team player. All students are encouraged to participate in each event and help gain points for their respective house teams. Any students who reach qualifying standards will then be chosen to represent the Siena Athletics Team at the Coastal District Athletics trials early next month. We will require parental assistance with time keeping at the start of the day and any help with rotational activities is greatly appreciated throughout the day. We look forward to seeing you all there!
