Dear Parents CTJ Day On Monday, while students enjoyed a day away from school, Siena Primary played host to staff from Unity College (Caloundra West), St Thomas More (Sunshine Beach), St Patrick’s (Gympie) and Our Lady of the Rosary (Caloundra). In total, approximately 200 teachers and school officers gathered to moderate assessment of student work and participate in professional sharing and workshops. These occasions are valuable opportunities for us to collaborate with colleagues and gain fresh insights into current school and classroom practices.

Front Entrance After a great deal of consultation and speculation, work has begun on new school signage for the school and college. The design has changed somewhat from the first drafts however I am confident the completed project will provide an impressive and appropriate entrance for the Primary School and College. The main structure will be in brick and include both school badges and the stylised “Siena”. These will include back lighting. The project also includes restoring the brickwork on the right hand side of the school frontage (St Catherine’s side). We are hoping the project will be completed by the end of the school year and that disruption will continue to be kept to a minimum.

Class Placements 2017 Yesterday was the cut off date for any information parents wished to provide regarding class placements. Please be aware that any forms received from this point on cannot be considered as we have now progressed with our processes. The information we have received will certainly be taken into consideration however the process is complex and final decisions on all class placements will need to be at the school’s discretion. Providing information and particular requests does not guarantee a preferred placement for your child. Information regarding class placements for 2017 will be provided to all families in the first week of the summer vacation.

Reports and End of Year Information Semester Two Reports will be available on the Parent Portal from 3.00pm on Wednesday 30 November 2016. Reports will not be posted this semester. Please ensure you are able to currently access the Parent Portal. If there are any difficulties with access it is important to contact the office to ensure issues are resolved prior to 30 November.

Year 3 Liturgy All Year 3 parents, grandparents and friends of Siena are invited to join Year 3 students for their Term 4 Liturgy, ‘Jesus, God’s Good News’ on Tuesday 25 Oct at 9.00am in St Catherine’s Church.

Calling any Siena Parents or Grandparents - HELP NEEDED Any parents, Grandparents or friends of Siena who are handy with a sewing machine. I am hoping to make new prayer cloths for all our classrooms for the beginning of 2017. If you are able, or know anyone who would be willing to assist with sewing these cloths, please contact the school office.

2017 Calendars Parents in Years Prep, 1 and 2 are invited to purchase a 2017 calendar specially designed by your child. Orders must be received by 2 November 2016. Please see your class teacher for details.

Siena Chess Competition - Date claimer Our annual school chess competition will be held on Friday 18 November for students in Years 1 to 6 (Prep students by invitation ONLY) in the school library. There is no cost to enter this event. This competition will take all day and students are asked to bring their bags to the library at the commencement of the day. Details about nominations will be sent home later in the term.

We are never too busy to pray ….. try this prayer when you are next sitting at a traffic light.

1. The thumb is the closest finger to you. So start praying for those who are closest to you. They are the people easiest to remember.

2. The next finger is the index. Pray for those who teach you, instruct you and heal you. They need the support and wisdom to show direction to others. Always keep them in your prayers.

3. The following finger is the tallest. It reminds us of our leaders, the governors and those who have authority. They need God’s guidance.

4. The fourth finger is the ring finger. Even though it may surprise you, it is our weakest finger. It should remind us to pray for the weakest, the sick or those plagued by problems. They need your prayers.

5. And finally we have our smallest finger, the smallest of all. Your pinkie should remind you to pray for yourself. When you are done praying for the other four groups, you will be able to see your own needs but in the proper perspective, and also you will be able to pray for your own needs in a better way.

Blessings for your week, Jacqui Winmill

12th Annual Walk for Daniel The Daniel Morcombe Foundation held the first Walk for Daniel in November 2005. It is held annually on the Day for Daniel. The walk follows the same path that Daniel walked from Palmwoods to arrive at the Nambour Connection Road in Woombye, where he waited for the bus to the Sunshine Plaza before being abducted.

The aim of this walk is to raise awareness of child protection, safety and harm prevention. Siena families are invited to wear RED and attend the 'Walk for Daniel' on Friday 28 October commencing from 6.00am and ending at approximately 8.30am.The walk is 4km long (all along pathways so suitable for prams), starting at Sunshine Coast Christian College in Woombye (Cnr Schubert & Kiel Mtn Rds, Woombye) and finishing at Briggs Park in Palmwoods. Ample parking is available at both the start and end locations of the walk and shuttle buses operate to transport walkers to the start or to return to Suncoast Christian College at the end of the walk.

Our school recognizes this event as extremely important but believe it is one that should be experienced by parents and children together. As such, although some staff are participating in the walk, they will not be supervising this event and all Siena Primary students will need to be supervised by an attending adult. Parents will need to provide their own transportation to and from this event. Staff attending will have our Siena banner so please assemble as a representation of our school community on the oval of Suncoast Christian College prior to 6.00am on the morning of the walk.

We request that all students, regardless of whether they participate in the walk or not, WEAR a RED T-SHIRT on Friday 28 October in recognition of Day for Daniel in an effort to assist in raising awareness about child safety and to promote a safer community for our children. A donation to the Daniel Morcombe Foundation will be made on behalf of our school community.

A flyer for the upcoming Girls Rugby 7s Development Day is attached to today’s newsletter. If your daughter would like to participate please ask them to see me for a permission slip.

Congratulations to our Netballers who competed over the weekend. Feedback has been that the girls played extremely well against some tough opposition. Big thank you to Mrs Sanders who has given lots of her own time to coach the girls and prepare them for this competition.

From the Guidance Counsellor

Spend time with your kids and be mindful when with them. Another way to spell love is T-I-M-E. Believe it or not, children and, yes, even adolescents, like being with their parents. Giving a child a lot of quality time with you teaches them the language of love - life’s greatest gift. Savour every moment together, big and small, and rid yourself of distractions at such times, including your smartphone. Being mindful helps you maintain empathy toward a child, and this provides important modelling of empathy, the most important emotion for developing gratitude and moral behaviour. It will also give you and your child a heightened sense of appreciation for the things both of you love and for your relationship.

QLD Primary All Schools Touch Thank you to all of those students who nominated for selection in our Siena Primary All Schools Touch team. Trials were held at lunchtimes earlier this term and selecting the team was extremely difficult as all of the students present would have represented our school with pride.

Flying the Siena colours at the Cleveland Showgrounds on the 5 and 6 November will be:

Congratulations on being selected and good luck at the Carnival! Paperwork will be coming home this week.

MYTERN This week we will meet the 2 main MYTERN characters – REAPO and BUSKA.

REAPO REAPO builds our health and makes us thrive, increasing our joy of just being alive. REAPO’s roads include: HAPPY EXCITED PEACEFUL GENEROUS LOVING CONFIDENT

BUSKA Buska makes us strong when things go wrong but we should not stay on BUSKA’s roads for very long. BUSKA’s roads include: SAD DISAPPOINTED ANGRY MEAN JEALOUS SCARED

It is important to remember that each road has its own merit. Some roads are designed to give you a completely different perspective, changing the way you see things and helping you to choose another road. Life is meant to be full of contrast. You can’t expect to spend your life driving on REAPO roads because that way you will not develop any resilience.

Next week we will focus on how to stay in control of your steering wheel.

All the best for the week ahead. Please don’t hesitate to ask if you feel I can support you or your children to more fully access the opportunities we provide here at Siena.

“Ah, music," he said, wiping his eyes. "A magic beyond all we do here!” J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

Tip of the week - Make practice fun and be sure to have a goal each time you play! Start with an easy warm-up, begin to work on difficult passages, reward yourself by playing a favourite piece and then present a mini-concert for mum and dad or visitors and neighbours!

Music Count Us In will be presented during assembly on Wednesday 26 October. This is a national day of advocacy for music education in all schools funded by the Federal Government. We are very fortunate to have excellent access to general classroom, instrumental and choral music at Siena. This year song is called “Let is Play” and is based around the famous “Canon” by Pachelbel. The whole school has been learning the song and many of our instrumental students will be providing the backing. Take a listen, and learn the song by clicking HERE. It would be great to have you join us at assembly next week for this performance.

Exam success - Congratulations to Emme Love on completing her Grade 1 AMEB Flute examination. Several other students will be completing exams in coming weeks and we wish them the best of luck in these endeavours.

Coming soon Thursday 3 November at 2.00pm in Daintree - Performance by Beecroft Primary School Band who will be touring the Sunshine Coast from Sydney (parents are welcome to attend) Thursday 10 November - Piano Recitals (Mrs Wordsworth) in Benincasa from 5.00pm and 6.30pm

Samsung Cup Netball News

On the weekend the Siena Netball team spent two days playing in the Samsung State Primary Schools Cup. The competition was very strong with over 120 teams participating from all over Queensland.

Our girls had some very tough competition on Saturday but were amazing and had a 'never give up attitude'. They fought to the end in every game. They maintained good sportsmanship and were very positive and gracious in winning and defeat. On Sunday we were allocated to Div 4. The girls had an amazing day and won all of their games to win in this division.

The best part of the weekend was that the girls had a great time of friendship and comradery and worked as a team. At times they were asked to play out of their original positions, they did this without complaint and were able to learn new skills and showed huge improvement over the course of the weekend.

I think they are all amazing and certainly did Siena, myself and their parents proud. I would like to say a huge thank you to the great parent support team who were there for the whole weekend to support and look after us.
