Dear Parents and Caregivers, Kia ora. Welcome back to the third term. It’s been a busy start with class trips to Queen’s Park, to East Road Pets, and the ski trip to the Remarkables. Thanks to all the parents and caregivers who are making these trips possible. Writers’ Workshop Our major schoolwide achievement focus this year is on writing. Rooms 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 have been running a “Writer’s Workshop” since the start of the second term. In this programme a group of four students in each of these classes works closely with their teacher four days a week on writing. This includes two sessions working in the library, away from the busy classroom so that they can focus fully on the task at hand. Feedback from the students involved includes the following comments; When writing in class I can now get straight into my writing without waiting for help. I really enjoy it and I wish it was 40 minutes rather than 30. I liked this writing club because we had more teacher attention and support. I wish it was everyday for the whole year so I could learn a whole heap. I have learnt what compound and complex sentences are and how to use metaphors and similes to improve my writing. We have seen some excellent progress from these children in the last term thanks to their great attitudes and the skillful teaching happening. School Uniforms With the field getting quite muddy of late, we are happy for children playing soccer and rugby etc. on the fields to bring an alternative “strip” to change into at lunchtime to reduce your laundry tasks at home. What’s been happening… We have started a lunchtime ukulele group this term. We are very grateful to the PTA for the donation to purchase the ukuleles and to Natalie Kerr for getting this new initiative underway… Year 4-6 teachers have been involved in three way conferences this week. Having positive contact with parents/caregivers in these conferences is very motivating for the teachers so thanks parents for your contribution. … We hosted the local interschool speech finals here yesterday. Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Kia ora. Welcome back to the third term. It’s been a busy start with class trips to Queen’s Park, to East Road Pets, and the ski trip to the Remarkables. Thanks to all the parents and caregivers who are making these trips possible.

Writers’ Workshop Our major schoolwide achievement focus this year is on writing. Rooms 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 have been running a “Writer’s Workshop” since the start of the second term. In this programme a group of four students in each of these classes works closely with their teacher four days a week on writing. This includes two sessions working in the library, away from the busy classroom so that they can focus fully on the task at hand. Feedback from the students involved includes the following comments;

When writing in class I can now get straight into my writing without waiting for help.

I really enjoy it and I wish it was 40 minutes rather than 30. I liked this writing club because we had more teacher attention and

support. I wish it was everyday for the whole year so I could learn a whole

heap. I have learnt what compound and complex sentences are and how to

use metaphors and similes to improve my writing.

We are very grateful to the PTA for the donation to purchase the ukuleles and to Natalie Kerr for getting this new initiative underway…

Year 4-6 teachers have been involved in three way conferences this week. Having positive contact with parents/caregivers in these conferences is very motivating for the teachers so thanks parents for your contribution. …

We hosted the local interschool speech finals here yesterday. Congratulations to Liam for his third placing with his humorous speech on hamsters and to Jaeda for making it into the finals with a very convincing speech on the perils of fast food.

PTA NOTEBOOK: The Ice Cream stall has arrived!! Another big blue addition to the playground has been completed. We’ve had plenty of positive feedback from the children and parents. Use your im-agination next time you’re passing the stall and order up a two scoop chocolate dipped!! Thanks again to the Corrections Department for this project. The PTA is pleased to support the school in the purchase of specialist sportswear. A donation of $4,500 by the PTA completes a generous funding grant from The Southern Trust. The items in this package are expected to have a ten year plus life span. The PTA has agreed to pay for a master landscaping plan from a landscape professional. Our objective is to put some long awaited ideas into the playgrounds and gardens. Our expectation is that the school will then look as dynamic and lively as the children that use it. Thanks go to Sandra for her many months of initially investigating and then liaising with this professional. Our second Community Cuppa was held this week and we had a great turnout. Thanks to everyone who called in for a cuppa and catch up. We aim to hold another one next month as it’s a great chance to get to know each other. The PTA’s next committee meeting is to be held on Wednesday 6 September at 7.30pm – all welcome. We are still looking for a President and Vice President so if you’re interested in filling either of these roles please come along to this meeting, or approach Adele to discuss what the role involves. On behalf of the Salford School PTA, Gillian, Committee Member
