Term 4 Week 7 18th November 2015

The Newsletter is designed to offer an information service to the parents of Wedderburn College students and local people interested in Education.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Aerosol deodorants and perfumes

The school has a “no aerosol policy” at school as these can be

a trigger for asthma. Of late some students have been

forgetting this policy and using aerosols. This has caused

distress to asthmatics. If your student uses deodorant please

ensure that a “roll on” is provided.

At the College Council meeting on Monday night, Council

ratified our “Visitors in Schools” policy. An extract is

included below.

Guiding Principles:

(1) The aim of this policy is to provide a safe and secure

environment for the students, staff, parents and resources

of Wedderburn College.

(2) It is important to establish protocols and procedures to

effectively monitor and manage volunteers and visitors,

whilst not compromising the open and inviting nature of

Wedderburn College.

Implementation:

(1) Visitors to Wedderburn College are required to report to

the School Office and sign in at the visitors’ book

immediately upon arrival at the school.

(2) Any visitor wishing to speak to a student must do so

through this process and speak to a school staff member.

(3) Visitors are required to sign the visitors’ book and will be

assigned a visitors’ lanyard which they must wear at all

times within the school. Similarly, they are required to

report to the School Office at the end of their visit to

return their lanyard and ‘sign out’ in the visitors’ book.

(4) Salespeople and those delivering goods will be directed

appropriately by the School Office staff.

(5) Visitors providing services to the school such as

tradespeople and consultants who may work independently of

school personnel, will be asked to present their Working with

Children Check (WWCC) in accordance with the Working

with Children Act 2005; observe the schools ‘sign in’ and

‘sign out’ procedures; wear a visitors lanyard at all times and observe the school’s Occupational Health and Safety

procedures while on site. Any visitors providing services to the school who do not have their Working with

Children Check will need to be supervised by School Office staff on their visit.

(6) Parents who volunteer in classrooms or excursions/incursions do not require a Working With Children Check

(WWCC) if their child is participating or ordinarily participates in the activity undertaken, provided they are under

the supervision of a teacher (refer: Working with Children Act 2005).

(7) Other volunteers, such as grandparents, aunts, uncles are exempt from a WWCC provided they are under the

supervision of a teacher. (refer: Working with Children Act 2005).

P-6 NEIGHBOURHOOD NEWS

GRADE 2 ROSES GAP CAMP

This week we farewell our Grade 2 Class, along with Mrs Mckenzie, Mrs Prevos and Vanessa Norman on the annual

camp to Roses Gap in The Grampians. The College Camp Programme is carefully planned and structured, so that the

camps are not only fun for the children but also build skills and foster positive social and emotional growth, learning,

and adventure.

Being exposed to new experiences and encouraged by friendly and sympathetic adults to try new things helps our

students build self-confidence. True self-esteem comes from doing something new and difficult and succeeding. Living

and co operating with others at camp gives children a chance to learn respect for others, teamwork, kindness, and

honesty and they have fun while they learn. Skills learnt at camp are then transferred to the classroom during the regular

academic year. Attendance at camp teaches children to work together more cooperatively, to resolve conflicts more

effectively, foster independence and coping strategies to assume greater responsibility, and to become more self-reliant

and self-confident.

The Grade 2 class have each written a set of goals they would like to achieve at camp. Good luck to you all.

ADVOCACY VALUE- DOING YOUR BEST

In Grade 3 /4, students talked about what Doing Your Best sounds like, looks like and feels like.

Doing your Best sounds like- pencil scratching on paper, asking questions, having discussions about your work with

your peers, sharing and reading your work, quiet

Doing your Best looks like- a tidy desk and tub, having your reading diary signed, putting your hand up, sitting sensibly

on the mat, not touching others, co operating with others

Doing your Best feels like- being proud, success, having a sense of achievement, positivity.

I absolutely agree with all of your ideas Grade 3 /4 .

KINDER TRANSITION

This week’s kinder to prep transition, only requires parents to drop their children at school before 9am, there is no

information session for parents. Mrs Tanya Chalmers will be taking our new students over to the KLC for some PE, and

to the Music room, where our Music teacher Mrs Wagstaff, and the Grade 4 guitar group will be ready to entertain our

2016 preppies.

SUNSMART SCHOOL

Just a reminder that in Term 4, all students are required to have a broad brimmed hat on at all times when outside. Please

ensure that your child’s hat is labelled and with them at school each day.

YEAR 7-10 NEIGHBOURHOOD NEWS

Programming Challenge for Girls Last week, Taylor Gibson and Oliva Holbert travelled to Melbourne University to compete in the Programming

Challenge for Girls (PC4G). After a brief training session on Alice, a visual programming language, the girls were given

a programming challenge that involved developing an animated three act story. Some monsters and aliens and a

spaceship were involved along with some wacky moves (very flexible wrist high fives). The girls had a great time and

met lots of girls from a number of other schools from around Melbourne and the state. After the challenge the girls had a

tour of the impressive Melbourne University campus.

Year 8 Federation Uni Camp

Year 8 students will be attending Federation University on Wednesday 2nd December, staying overnight and returning

on Thursday 3rd December. This camp is a fantastic opportunity for students to get a taste of what post schooling life is

all about - both at Uni and TAFE. The camp is fully organised by Federation University and is at no cost to students.

Please make sure consent forms are returned by 23 Nov 2015.

Year 7 Transition Events

On 25th November students in Grade 6 and their families from Wedderburn College, Inglewood Primary and St Mary’s

are invited to attend an afternoon of activities and dinner at Melville’s Cave to commence the transition activities into

Year 7 in 2016. Students will travel out to Melville’s Caves at 2pm. Dinner is being provided by the Parents Association

at 5pm. Parents/carers are welcome to come out at anytime to participate and meet other families.

Mr Dougall, Year 7-10 Neighbourhood Leader

YEAR 11-12 NEIGHBOURHOOD NEWS

Our Year 11 students will begin their end of year examinations on this week, with their English exam beginning this

Wednesday morning. During the examination period students are asked to be quiet and respectful when moving around

rooms 19 and 23, where exams will be taking place.

Once the examination period has finished, our Year 11 students will begin their Year 12 ‘Step Up’ week. During this

time, students will prepare for their upcoming Year 12 studies, with key content, expectations and preparation to begin

for their final year in 2016. All students are strongly encouraged to attend ‘Step Up’ week to ensure they are adequately

prepared for the beginning of their Year 12.

Our Year 11 students will also soon receive information regarding their Year 12 Orientation camp that will take place in

Ocean Grove on February 10,11 & 12 next year. Camp costs and an itinerary will be provided and families will be able

Compass News Notifying Absences Notifying the school of absences is a straightforward task you can quickly complete on Compass. It is a fast alternative

to writing notes in diaries or calling the school (of course you can still do this if you want).

To notify the school of an absence, log in to Compass. On the home screen you will see your children’s name and photo

on the left hand side. Under their name is a number of actions you can take.

- Select "Add Parent Approval (Approved Absence/Late)”. This will open up a dialogue box.

- Select the reason (e.g. Medical) and a Start and Finish Date. If your child is only away for part of the day (e.g. dentist

appointment) select the periods that they will be absent for. Compass will notify you of the classes your child will miss

so you know what work they need to follow up on.

- Click Save. That’s it!

NBN Did you know that the NBN Fixed Wireless service has been switched on in the district? Go to http://

www.nbnco.com.au/connect-home-or-business/check-your-address.html to see if you can possibly access NBN at

your home. Please note that the ability to access NBN is completely separate to mobile phone coverage. Even if you

have little or no mobile coverage you may still be able to get a strong NBN signal as it uses different towers and

technology.

GENERAL NEWS HOMEWORK CLUB The College provides support to students by offering teacher assistance at a lunchtime Homework Club. The Club is in

the Library on Tuesdays at lunchtime (2nd half) and Mrs McHugh supervises. Any students who require assistance with

any form of homework should to attend.

CHAPLAIN’S CHAT

Just an update on where we are at with our greenhouse. The base which will support the hoop house is nearly finished.

Digging the holes for the posts has been a real challenge as the ground is quite hard and full of rocks but we have won

the challenge eventually. We should see progress quite quickly now that the foundation is laid and can start to position

the grow beds and plumbing them in as well. The successful applicants in the Philmac Project 2015 have been announced and unfortunately we weren’t one of them

but Winter’s Flat at Castlemaine can now go ahead with their project having picked up a grant of $5000 for a new tank.

We will continue to look for more grant possibilities as time goes on. I am a firm believer that if you knock on enough

doors, some of them will open.

KOOL SKOOLS CD

This years Kool Skools CD is now available for purchase at the office. The cost is $5 each.

Well done to the students who took part in making the CD. It is always the highlight of the year for the music students

involved.

Mrs Jenny Wagstaff, Music Director

This week Miss Martin's Grade 3/4 class came to visit the garden accompanied by Miss Arnold.

Students did what they love doing most: taste testing the veggies that they have grown in the garden beds, some of the

students even wanting to take some of the produce home. Watering garden beds was another favourite activity for

students to be involved with as well as a cuddle with the baby chicks which was also on the agenda.

Weeding was another task students put their gardening gloves on to do as some of the weeds were huge hiding what was

actually growing behind them.

Thank you to all the class who are always excited about coming up to the garden.

Trina Vaughan, Garden Coordinator

Resource Smart I have been speaking with members from the Wedderburn Lions Club who are happy for Wedderburn College to set up

a 'battery recycling collection' which will be collected on a monthly basis and taken to the Wedderburn CFA to be

recycled.

This is a great move for Wedderburn College to be proactive in another way of being involved with recycling.

Trina Vaughan, Resource Smart Coordinator

Canteen News

The canteen will be closed for the year from Monday December 7, 2015. The last day the canteen will be open is Friday

December 4.

With the end of the year quickly approaching we will be running stock down in the canteen, so if we don't have what

your child orders for lunch, we will offer something of the same or lesser value.

We're still selling Cookies & Cream Oaks for $3.40, Olaf the Snowman ice creams for $2.20, Shepherd Pies for $4.50

and homemade XL meat pies for $5.00.

Paddle pops are currently only available in chocolate and rainbow flavour.

Prima juice boxes are no longer available.

The canteen is always looking for new parent volunteers to help out on Fridays. The time required is 11:30am - 1:30pm.
