Already, I am impressed by the professionalism of our College staff. The teachers have students at the centre of their planning and practice and our Education Support staff are a wonderful team of people who support the learning process in many and varied ways, helping our school to run effectively. The community is rightly proud of this wonderful College and the opportunities it provides for our students to become positive learners for the global community. Term 1 Week 1 18th April 2018

The Newsletter is designed to offer an information service to the parents of Wedderburn College students and local people interested in Education. Deadline for newsletter articles is STRICTLY 9am Tuesday via email address above.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK Dear Parents, Guardians, Carers and Friends of Wedderburn College Welcome to Term 2! I hope that the holiday period was enjoyed by all. It is my honour to be serving your school community in the role of Principal. This week I have spent my time visiting classrooms and observing the learning of your sons and daughters, meeting staff, finding out about the life and culture of Wedderburn College, as well as the broader community.

In the coming weeks I look forward to meeting more parents and supporters of the College. Conclusive research shows that when schools, families/carers and the community work in partnership together, student learning and wellbeing is enriched. Working closely with the School Council to provide the best possible educational outcomes for our students, I look forward to continuing to build on the strong and positive reputation of the College in the community, striving to ensure that all students graduate with a satisfying pathway for life and the necessary resilience to thrive in a rapidly changing world. STUDENT FREE DAY As notified in the final newsletter last term, students are not required to attend school on Tuesday 1st May. This day has been set aside for the professional learning of all staff. The office will remain open as usual.

2018 FOUNDATION (PREP) AND YEAR 7 STUDENTS SCHOOL UNIFORM APPLICATIONS Forms were previously sent home. We are now in the process of keying orders into the system. Please return them as soon as possible. Please specify size required-shirt, pants and shoes. Forms can be obtained from the office, if you need one. CSEF (Camp Sports and Excursion Fund) If you are eligible, please come and ask for an application form at the General Office, ring the school for more information.

Ms Rachel Lechmere, Principal F/1 Welcome back. It was great to hear all the holiday stories. We are all very excited about visiting the Zoo next Tuesday. Don’t forget you need to be at school at 6.45am. We should arrive home at 6.00pm. Children need to be in full school uniform with a packed lunch and recess in a zip lock bag. A waterproof jacket, jumper, and hat (clearly labelled) would also be appropriate. We have booked a pavilion so we can leave our back packs there. We were also very excited to see part of our room has turned into a Vet’s clinic! We have already performed 3 operations, helped mend a frog’s leg and provided medicine to a mouse with a very squeaky voice! This term, we will be reading lots of stories and information books about zoo animals. In Maths, we will be investigating shapes and maps. Our Inquiry unit is titled, ‘We’re going to the Zoo. How about You?’ This unit of study involves us working in teams and learning the skills needed to make friends, include others and work collaboratively. Please remember to return the information pack for the Prep health assessments. These will be conducted on Monday 23rd April 2018. Mrs Tanya Chalmers, Teacher GRADE 1/2 Welcome back to term 2! We are now counting the sleeps until our Zoo excursion next week. Just a reminder that all money and permission forms MUST be brought back now. If there are any problems, please come and see me. A reminder note will be sent out at the end of the week with information about details. We are definitely hoping for a beautiful day!! This term the students are no longer required to wear a sun smart hat but can everyone make sure that all winter uniforms – particularly jumpers – are named clearly. Have a great term! Mrs Deirdre McKenzie, Teacher GRADE 3/4 Welcome back to term 2 for 2018! This week we are getting very excited about the Melbourne Zoo Trip next week and we will be doing some investigation into the Zoo and the animals we are going to see there. If there are any queries or questions about the Zoo trip, please don’t hesitate to contact one of the staff members involved. The effort that has been put into home reading this year has been excellent and students are encouraged to keep aiming high for their reading awards and goals each week. This term there will be weekly spelling words and homework activities sent home each Monday starting next week. Miss Laura Trembath, Classroom Teacher GRADE 5/6 Welcome back! I hope you all had a restful holiday. On the last week of term, we had our Math Pathways test. Well done to Chelsea R, Chelsea C, Lillian and Scott on achieving 200% growth. Excellent work by all of the other students who achieved 100% or greater on the test. This term in Science, we will be learning about adaptations of plants and animals. We will be comparing the adaptations between different environments and the purposes of that adaptation. Just a reminder that all homework needs to be submitted by the due date and reading diaries must be signed daily. Miss Emma Milne, 5/6 Teacher

LIBRARY AND NEWS Book of the Week: Why I love Footy by Michael Wagner, illustrated by Tom Jellett This Picture Story book is a very popular item in our Library, whatever your team. The very humorous illustrations are also quite informative. We also have “A Footy Girl’s Guide” by Nicole Hayes and Alicia Sometimes. Published last year, this introduction to AFLW celebrates some of the great of this latest version of the professional game. These and many other books, make up the “Sport” display in the Library to help everyone find something they love in a book. ACCESSIT The Library has a new Computer system. Mrs Earl and Miss MacKay are quickly mastering the mechanics of the program and all our data has been transferred. Borrowing and returns are uninterrupted and searching the catalogue will be easier then before. More information about accessing the catalogue with an app will follow in the next newsletter. Miss MacKay and Mrs Earl, Librarians HOSTING OPPORTUNITY Would you like the opportunity to make new friends? Would you like to increase your language fluency? Would you like to increase your cultural understanding of Australia’s biggest near-northern neighbour? Why not host an Indonesian exchange student for 6 weeks in 2018! We are currently seeking 2 families of students in Years 9, 10 or 11 who would like to host an Indonesian exchange student for 6 weeks from 14th July to 25th August, 2018. This program, offered by IndoAustay Ltd (a volunteer-run not-for-profit public company), will be IndoAustay’s 8th Annual Southbound Exchange. IndoAustay has received very positive feedback from their Indonesian exchangees in terms of language and cultural learning, and from the Australian host families who have hosted these students. If you would be interested in hosting, please contact Ibu Humphrey ASAP at the school via email or phone. MOTHERS DAY STALL The Parents Association will be running its annual Mother’s Day Stall on Friday 11th May, 2018. Please limit your child to $10, gifts will range from 50c through to $10. DEB BALL-ASSISTANCE REQUESTED With the College Debutante Ball approaching quickly on Friday May 25th 2018, the Parents Association is urgently seeking helpers to run the kitchen on the night. We would like to extend an invitation to all parents of the College, to lend a helping hand to assist in making the night run smoothly for the debutantes and their partners. Many hands make light work, so if you can spare half an hour of your time, we would be extremely grateful.

Parents’ Association needs your assistance with the supper for our College 2017 Debutante Ball Friday, May 25th is fast approaching and we are asking for your assistance with supper for this very special occasion for our Year 11 girls and their partners. Donations of cakes, slices, sandwiches or something savoury like sausage rolls, mini quiches are very much appreciated for the evening. If you are not so good at the baking side of things, then a cash donation to purchase items for the evening is fantastic also. As little as $2 or as much as you like is a huge benefit to us in keeping costs down and
