Term 3Week 8 2nd September 2015

The Newsletter is designed to offer an information service to the parents of Wedderburn College students and local people interested in Education.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

I have spent the first part of this week with members of our

Leadership Team in Melbourne attending Professional

Learning based upon engaging and empowering learners.

We have been fortunate to have participated in and to have

heard a number of highly acclaimed national and

international educators. This learning has energised us in our

work and inspired us to continue the work we do every day

that ensures our students are able to step into the world

beyond school with confidence and the skills they require to

achieve our vision, Creating Positive Learners for the World

Community.

The ability to reflect upon the work that our staff team

undertakes is a very necessary part of our work as educators.

I look forward to sharing the latest research and ideas that

we have heard about with our college community to ensure

that Wedderburn College students continue to be the

recipients of cutting edge educational opportunities.

The College is in the midst of planning for 2016 – yes time

certainly flies! Students in the senior years are making

selections for the subjects they wish to study in 2016 and

across the school we are working on supporting the

transition process specifically from Pre- School to Prep,

from Year Six into Year 7 and into studying VCE/VCAL

and VET. It is vital that students are prepared for the

expectations that each stage of learning demands if they are

to achieve their best.

Importantly, as a College that is responsive to the needs of

our students, we are making some changes to the Year 9/10

program delivery mode for next year and are having an

information session on Tuesday September 8th at 6.30PM

to share these changes with our 2016 Year 9/10 students. Mr

Kelvin Baird, North Central Trade Training Centre, will

attend this session to provide information about the range of

VET (Vocational Education and Training) subjects available

for students to study. Attendance is important for students

and their parents/carers. We are excited about the

reinvigoration of this learning program and look forward to

sharing this with our students and parents. Light

refreshments will be served.

Congratulations to Mark Gretgrix and his wife Lauren on the birth of their daughter, Imogen Grace Gretgrix, a sister for

Hamish. We wish Mark and his family all the very best.

FOOTY COLOURS DAY FRIDAY

This Friday the 4th of September the SRC is supporting Footy Colours Day. Cancer doesn’t discriminate, affecting

Australians of all ages and walks of life. Schools across the country unite in the fight against cancer by wearing their

favourite football or sports team colours and raise money for the Fight Cancer Foundation to fund vital care, treatment

methods and cures for young children living with cancer. So wear your sporting colours and bring along a gold coin

donation this Friday.

WHOLE SCHOOL ASSEMBLY MONDAY

Monday 7th September is our next assembly, to be held in the KLC at 2pm. Mrs Polkinghorne’s Grade 5 class will be

making a special presentation, and our school captains will be presenting Student of the Week awards and Caught Being

Good for the Value of Responsibility. Your child’s teacher will contact you either through Compass or a phone call if

your child is receiving an award at the assembly. All parents, carers and members of our school community are welcome

to attend.

Miss Julie Martin, Neighbourhood Co Ordinator

Playgroup

As part of our Book Week celebrations last week we were treated to a morning of fun, singing and laughter with the

Mainly Music ladies, Kerry Dobbin a childhood entertainer and Tammy Higgs from Goldfields library. It was wonderful

that our young families, kinder and surroundings schools Inglewood and Bridgewater Primary School came along and

share in our morning. Every child was able to play in our new playgroup/ early years room and went home with a

special goodies bag and gift!

In the future we hope to have more of these fun times together as a community.

All Year 11 and 12 students should have returned their Expression of Interest forms for subject selections for 2016.

Once the data is collated students will be notified of when they can make their final selections. If you have not handed

back your form please do so as soon as possible.

Compass News Do you wonder how other parents use Compass? Check out how parents in the Prep – 6 Neighbourhood are using it...

“I find Compass very useful for:

- advising of absences,

- emailing teachers to discuss an issue,

- check for upcoming events,

- give approval for the girls to attend various activities

- and most recently the Learning Tasks bar where you can see what your children are currently learning and how they

are going with it.

Another area I find useful is School Documentation where you can access past newsletters, other resources. Recently I

needed the canteen menu, which was easily accessible here at short notice.” Vanessa Norman

Chaplain’s Chat

Philmac is an Australian manufacturer and worldwide exporter of irrigation products and is offering a project to rural

communities in the form of funding for projects that make best use of and promote water conservation.

So how does the project work?

Submissions that fulfil the criteria are lodged with Philmac, and once the closing date passes (Friday 4th September), all

entries will be judged by a panel. If a project is accepted, it is then listed on the Philmac website and community

members are asked to vote for their project. The 5 projects that get the most community votes will get the cash and also

some products from Philmac. I have lodged a submission for Wedderburn College Aquaponics Project, which passes

the criteria and now we are waiting for our result. Please be watching as I keep you updated because it will be through

your help that determines whether we become winners in this project and ultimately a win for our community. If we are

successful, it can mean we can earn up to $5000 for our school and community.

Great news; our Aquaponics project has been accepted onto the Philmac site so now we are asking everyone to go to

the website and vote for our project.

The process is easy:

Just go to http://philmacproject.com.au/entry/9507269 and click on the "Vote for this project" button.

Please also share the link on Facebook and get your friends to vote too. We need lots and lots of votes so that our

College can win some cash for our project.

Resource Smart School Program.

Wedderburn College is part of the Resource Smart School Program.

As part of the program the school has to complete five modules.

Each time a module is completed a star gets presented to the school.

The exciting news is that the first star has been achieved.

Great work Wedderburn College.

This week Mrs Chalmer's Grade Prep/1 class came up to visit the garden accompanied by Miss Hawkins.

Students were keen to show how helpful they could be. Using shovels and picks they dug out some of the bigger hole that the older

students had been working on.

There were eggs to be collected. Students were very careful not to break these when getting them out of the nesting boxes and were

proud to show them off.

Students then worked in pairs to plant seeds in garden beds and watered them by using watering cans.

They were grateful to have been able to help and gave a big thank you.

That's all for this week.
