The Newsletter is designed to offer an information service to the parents of Wedderburn College students and local people interested in Education.
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Congratulations to Year Ten student, Zoe Coombes who has
been successful in gaining a place in the Kwong Lee Dow
Young Scholars program at The University of Melbourne.
The Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars Program is an
academic enrichment program designed to support high-
achieving students. As a Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholar,
Zoe will take part in an exciting program of events and
activities focused on expanding her academic and personal
horizons. She will have access to the following opportunities:
A taste of university life
The chance to meet and connect with other like-
minded students
The opportunity to develop her leadership and
community involvement skills
Access to University resources, academics and events
at The University of Melbourne’s Parkville campus.
Well done, Zoe. I’m sure you will make the most of this
wonderful opportunity.
Wedderburn College has strong networks which offer support
and opportunities for our students to experience life beyond
school, including the links we have with Federation
University that annually provide opportunities for our
students to explore their minds about their aspirations and
how they might achieve then. This program starts right back
at Year Five.
We also have a relationship with DOXA that regularly offers students opportunities to participate in career and further
education residential experiences in Melbourne as well as camps, both rural and urban. Doxa's vision is that all young
people have the opportunity to achieve. Their events are communicated regularly to students throughout the year. Keep
an eye out for them in 2016.They are wonderful opportunities for young people.
Mr Allan and Mr Wiese headed off to Canberra on Sunday with our team of basket ballers ready to do battle at the
National Basketball Competitions. You can keep up to date with their progress on their Facebook page Wedderburn
College Ball Bouncers. Good luck boys.

and Paddy Platypus at about 12:15pm. Please come along and join us at any stage of the day!
P-6 ASSEMBLY
The final P-6 assembly for 2015 will be Friday 11th December, at 9am in the BER atrium.
This will be a special assembly as we farewell our Grade 6 students, and remember all of the fun and learning they have
had during their 7 years of Primary School. The Prep/1 students will make a presentation to their Grade 6 Buddies.
There will be Student of the Week awards, and Caught Being Good: Positive Relationships Certificates awarded. Ms
Mackay will also be handing out certificates for those students who completed the Premier's Reading Challenge. All
friends and family are welcome and encouraged to attend. Classroom teachers will notify parents and caregivers with a
phone call or vis Compass if their child will be receiving an award at the assembly.
P-6 SOCIAL- JUNIOR PROM THEME
It’s that time of year again- it’s the Junior Prom. Last year’s event was a great success, but I stress to parents and
caregivers that it is not necessary to go out and buy a formal outfit for this event. The theme means that you put on a
special outfit, and your dancing shoes!
DATE: Friday 11th December
TIME: 6-8pm
WHERE: KLC
PRICE: $5 per student, or $8 for two family members or $12 for three family members.
Snacks and drinks are available to purchase on the night.
We will also be operating our photo booth again. Anyone can come and have their picture taken, and they will be
available to view and purchase the following week. Photos are $3 each or 2 for $5.
POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS ACTIVITIES
Make the Statue Laugh
Strong social skills involve the ability to practice self control. In this version of a classic game, one kid plays "It" as all
other kids freeze like statues. The "It" kid performs actions, without touching the statues, to make the "frozen" kids
laugh, making funny faces, doing a wild dance or making funny noises. The first kid to laugh becomes “It” for the next
round. If the "It" kid performs genuinely funny actions and "frozen" kids restrain from bursting into laughter, they
successfully show self control. Variations: have all the kids lie on the ground and remain quiet and still. When they
move, they are out. The last child to move is the winner. Or set it up so the whole class wins if everyone stays still for a
pre-determined period of time. Have the whole class congratulate each other on whatever their level of success! Walk
students through the steps of the game and model the first round.
Materials Needed: None
Time it Takes: 15-30 minutes, or the amount of time you have.
Skills This Builds: COOPERATION, PARTICIPATION, COMMUNICATION, VALIDATION - SUPPORT,
SPORTSMANSHIP, KEEPING YOUR COOL
Keep an eye out on Compass for more activities for the home or classroom, promoting Positive Relationships.

YEAR 11-12 NEIGHBOURHOOD NEWS
Our Year 10 students are finishing up their last week of schooling this week, with their official ‘Step Up’ day on Friday
4th December. ‘Step Up’ Day provides students with a good lead in to their VCE and VCAL classes in 2016, outlines
class structure and will give students the opportunity to begin some pre reading or holiday tasks before commencing
their Year 11 studies next year. Students undertaking Studio Arts, Health and Human Development and Health and
Physical Education will need to catch up with their individual teachers, as they will be unavailable for classes on Friday
4th December. Staff will also ensure that any student absent from their ‘Step Up’ receives an email outlining their
introduction and any required preparation.
Interviews for our 2016 College Captains will take place next week, with the successful applicants presented to the
school community on our Awards Night, on Monday14th December. Good luck to all of our potential candidates.
After this week there will be no senior students at school as they have completed their 2015 year. The end of year
holidays are the perfect opportunity to relax, recharge and prepare for a vigorous and successful 2016.
As the school year draws to a close we are able to spend some time reflecting on the amazing things our students have
achieved this year. It is so rewarding to be able to watch our young people grow and flourish throughout the year and I

hope that many parents, families and friends can be there to support and celebrate their efforts at our Awards Night.

for the greenhouse plastic and also start leveling the ground and setting up the bases for the grow beds. This week

where the fish will live into the completed system
This is a djembe drum in the skin mounting process. The skin is a natural goat skin and is tensioned over the drum shell
by threading a web of special drum rope. Once the skin is in place and lightly tensioned, it has to sit for a number of days

BREAKFAST CLUB
Last Thursday the 26th November Wedderburn College was given the opportunity to have a visit from Jenny
Borromeo, Diabetes Educator and Cardiac Rehab Nurse from Inglewood and Districts Health Service to help with the
Breakfast Club, which runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Jenny supplied cereals, milk, milo, an assortment of fruits,
bottled water, bread for making toast along with vegemite, raspberry jam and margarine to go on top.
After breakfast was finished, Jenny gave a presentation to the Years 7 & 8 students on the importance of eating a
healthy breakfast.
Thank you Jenny for visiting Wedderburn College. Students really enjoyed the variety of breakfast items you were able
to supply.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank a few special people who have helped out with the breakfast club
throughout the year. Rebecca Buschmann, who has been at school most Tuesdays and Thursdays and at times have
provided a few extra treats for the students. Dede Williams who has helped out whenever possible. Janice Deocampo,
our school nurse who has been able to get a source of bread for making toast and to Olivia Holbert who comes in
early week after week and volunteers her time before she has to start school.
Thank you to everyone that has been involved with this important program.
Trina Vaughan, Breakfast Coordinator
RESOURCE SMART Wedderburn College has been involved with the Resource Smart Program and was entered into this year's Resource
Smart Education Awards. Unfortunately Wedderburn College didn't win any of the Grant prizes but was recognised for
