They should be fit and ready to start, likewise they should be wearing the appropriate running gear for the year ahead. If they turn up in a pair of shoes that don’t fit well, they will end up with bloodied feet unable to continue. In this analogy we have covered the elite and the ill prepared, what of those in between these two groups. The runners who have prepared well, making the most of the natural talents they have. Most of these runners will start the race with a very clear plan of how they are going to achieve their best. What they need to do in each stage of the race and the pace that they need to maintain. As the race is run their diligence in preparing and training should, barring injury, allow them to achieve their potential. They may find that as they race they can actually go even faster and exceed their expectations. Our students need to approach the marathon that is ahead of them in a steady, consistent and considered manner, they need to maintain a work ethic that will allow them to fulfil their potential. They must ensure that they are fully prepared for the year ahead and not be concerned about moments in the limelight, rather they should be concerned about their whole year and fulfilling their potential. They must also be ready for the challenges that lie ahead. There will be times when they feel like stopping, when they start to cramp. There aren’t many people who run marathons and say they did not suffer any pain or discomfort, rather they faced these two challenges and overcame them. So for the year ahead we need to ensure that all of the children at SCOTS PGC start their marathon in a manner that they can continue in, one that will allow them to fulfil their potential. Along the way we can help sustain them and encourage them. We can help them set their pace and coach them but ultimately they have to run the race. I hope they all succeed! TERM 1, WEEK 1

30 JANUARY 2015

Dear Parents,

The fi rst week back at school is always an interesting phenomenon, after a long holiday period many parents are quite looking forward to their children returning to school. Likewise after a long period of being with their parents and siblings many students are looking forward to getting back to school! The start of the year is the chance to catch up with your friends, socialise and start afresh.

Each school year is like a marathon. While a marathon is 42 kms a school year falls a little short at 37 weeks. As the runners gather at the start line they should be well prepared. They should be fi t and ready to start, likewise they should be wearing the appropriate running gear for the year ahead. If they are choosing to run the marathon in a costume, they will fi nd that they do not fulfi l their potential. If they turn up in a pair of shoes that don’t fi t well, they will end up with bloodied feet unable to continue.

At the start of each marathon there are people who sprint madly, ensuring that they are caught on camera enjoying their moment in the limelight. These runners soon fall by the wayside and usually having spent their energies in a moment of madness, underachieve. The elite runners are in a diff erent league. They start in a separate starting area, they train, diet and prepare exclusively for each event. Some even have pacemakers whose role it is to ensure that they stay at the right speed throughout the race.

They may fi nd that as they race they can actually go even faster and exceed their expectations.

Our students need to approach the marathon that is ahead of them in a steady, consistent and considered manner, they need to maintain a work ethic that will allow them to fulfi l their potential. They must ensure that they are fully prepared for the year ahead and not be concerned about moments in the limelight, rather they should be concerned about their whole year and fulfi lling their potential. They must also be ready for the challenges that lie ahead. There will be times when they feel like stopping, when they start to cramp. There aren’t many people who run marathons and say they did not suff er any pain or discomfort, rather they faced these two challenges and overcame them.

So for the year ahead we need to ensure that all of the children at SCOTS PGC start their marathon in a manner that they can continue in, one that will allow them to fulfi l their potential. Along the way we can help sustain them and encourage them. We can help them set their pace and coach them but ultimately they have to run the race. I hope they all succeed! Damien Cahill Director of Co-Curricular

After 27 and a half years service in the Australian Regular Army, I have left the service to take up a position as Director of Co-Curricular at the school. My family (wife Julie and daughter Samantha - going into Year 5) and I are delighted to be joining the school community and living in the Southern Downs region.

Personally, I have a signifi cant background as a rugby union coach (level 3), professional musician (performer, composer, conductor and arranger) and as an ESL teacher to adults. My wife Julie has extensive experience as a professional musician and will be working at the school as part of the maintenance team, and our daughter Samantha loves her music (piano) and playing hockey.

My aim is to develop and create the most sustainable and rewarding co-curriculum programme for the students and staff of the College. My family and I look forward to meeting you all in the near future.

New Staff Profi les

scotspgc.com.au

David Proudlove joins the College from his role as Head of Humanities and Year 9 and 10 Residential Coordinator at Christ Church Grammar School in Perth, Western Australia.

David and wife Millie emigrated to Australia from Gloucestershire, in the West of England, back in 2009, bringing their children Samuel and Rosie-May along with them. 18 months ago, Matilda was an Australian-born addition to the family. Millie is having a career break from teaching, formerly being the Head of Humanities at Newman College in Perth.

The family is very excited about becoming part of such a tight-knit and successful community at SCOTS PGC and, since arriving in Queensland on New Year’s Day, have enjoyed the contrast to Perth’s metropolitan life on the other side of the continent. Paddocks of horses have replaced the Indian Ocean, much to the delight of horse-crazy Rosie-May!

Mr David Proudlove Head of Senior School

To introduce two of our new Staff members we asked them to write something about themselves and their families to refl ect their individual personalities.
