Termly Overview
Year 3 - Autumn 2014
Spellings: these will be given out each Monday and then tested on the following Friday.
Maths: a homework task will be set each Friday and needs to be handed in by the follow-
ing Friday. The task may be paper-based, or on I am Learning.
Reading: children should be reading at least three times per week at home and this
should be recorded in their planner. Please refer to the Reading Focuses in the planner
for ideas for questions you could ask during home reading.
Reading
The children will be... listening to and discussing a wide range of fiction, poetry,
plays, non-fiction and reference books or textbooks
asking questions to improve their understanding of a text
drawing inferences such as inferring characters feelings,
thoughts and motives from their actions, and justifying infer-
ences with evidence Our class reading book this term will be Stig of the Dump and
we will be basing a lot of our literacy around this.

Spoken language listen and respond appropriately to adults and their peers
ask relevant questions to extend their understanding and
knowledge
Read, write and order whole numbers to at least 1000; know what
each digit represents.
Understand division and recognise that division is the inverse of
multiplication.
Choose and use appropriate operations ( including multiplication and
division) to solve word problems, explaining methods and reasoning.
Identify right angles.
Solve a given problem by organising and interpreting numerical data
in pictograms, tables and graphs.
Maths lessons this term will also now include the following
objectives from the new curriculum:
Add and subtract numbers with up to three digits
Add and subtract amounts of money to give change, using both
and p in practical contexts
Count from 0 in multiples of 4, 8, 50 and 100
Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8
multiplication tables
Solve problems involving simple algebra
Draw 2-D shapes and make 3-D shapes using modelling materials;
recognise 3-D shapes in different orientations and describe them
Identify forces that are acting on an object.
Suggest directions in which forces are acting.
Study stationary objects and identify forces acting upon them.
Describe magnets as having two poles and observe how magnets attract or repel each other.
Observe how magnets attract some materials and not others.
Compare and group together a variety of everyday materials on the basis of whether they are attracted to a magnet, and identify some
magnetic materials.
