OU REWIND (AP)Danielle Gant celebrated her 21st birthday by scoring 21 points and leading No. 17 Texas A&M to its sixth-straight win in Big 12 Conference play on March 6, 2008 in College Stati on. Gant also had 12 rebounds to lead the Aggies to a 73-59 victory over No. 11 Oklahoma, their third win in a row over a top 25 team. A&M fi nished the regular season with wins in 10 of its last 11 games aft er starti ng conference play 1-4. The Aggies led from start to fi nish and maintained a double-digit lead through most of the game. A&M had a seven-point lead at halft ime and opened the second half with a 12-3 run to take a 45-29 lead with about 16 minutes left . Gant had two-straight jump shots to cap that run. The Aggies put the game completely out of reach with a 17-7 run aft er that to stretch the lead to 62-36 with about fi ve minutes remaining. OU didn’t score a basket for an almost a 7 1/2 minute span in the second half. The drought stretched from 13:01 unti l Jenna Plumley’s jump shot with 5:32 left . The Sooners fi nished the game with a 23-11 run, but their defi cit was too much to overcome. Courtney Paris’ streak of 89 consecuti ve games with a double-double came dangerously close to being broken as she turned in 27 points and 11 rebounds versus the Aggies. She had just one rebound at halft ime and didn’t get her 10th unti l there was just 1:21 left in regulati on. A&M led by one point before going on a 10-0 run to take a 16-5 lead with about 14 minutes left in the fi rst half. Oklahoma then scored nine of the next 11 points to cut the lead to 18-14 midway through the half. The Sooners had cut the lead to three points before A&M went on an 11-2 run to push its lead to 31-19 about four minutes before halft ime. The Aggies got nine points from Takia Starks in that span. Starks added 19 points and Morenike Atunrase had 10. Oklahoma outscored A&M 7-2 the rest of the half to get within 33-26 at halft ime.

SERIES NOTESOklahoma holds a 24-11 series advantage over A&M, but the Aggies have won three of the last four meeti ngs between the two Big 12 South rivals in-cluding a 73-59 (+14) victory to close out the Big 12 regular season on March 6, 2008 in College Stati on. Last season, both teams split the series as the Sooners claimed a 68-56 (+12) win before a Lloyd Noble Center-record crowd of 12,168 on Feb. 12, 2008. A&M is 2-13 when playing on the road in Nor-man, while OU is 19-10 overall in league regular-season games versus the Aggies.

AGGIE-SOONER TALENT SHOWWhen you are at the top, you are at the top, and for good reason. The Texas A&M and Oklahoma rosters boasts a wealth of talent with nati onal player of the year and All-America candidates as well as rising stars in the mak-ing. When the Big 12 awards were announced in October, A&M and OU were the big winners. Preseason All-Big 12 Team members Takia Starks and Courtney Paris led the way for the Aggies and Sooners respecti vely along with preseason honorable menti on Danielle Gant. Tanisha Smith, a junior col-lege All-American for the Aggies, was tabbed Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, while A&M’s Tyra White and OU’s Whitney Hand shared Big 12 Freshman of the Year honors. Both team’s veteran and youthful depth has shown as this week’s league player of the week awards went to A&M’s Gant and OU’s Hand. A total of 11 weekly awards have been won by an Aggie or Sooner this season including seven out of the 10 freshman of the week honorees that have included White, Hand and A&M’s Adaora Elonu and Sydney Carter.

AGGIE SIDEBARS• Head coach Gary Blair is 5-10 all-ti me versus Oklahoma in his 24 years as a Division I head coach. Three of his fi ve lifeti me wins against the Sooners have come within the last two years.

• The last ti me Texas A&M beat Oklahoma in Norman, a 54-52 victory on Jan. 27, 2007, it snapped OU’s 24-game winning streak versus the Big 12 in one of the most memorable games in Aggie Basketball history. The upset over the then-No. 6-ranked Sooners was a key turning point in A&M’s rise on the nati onal scene and as a serious contender in the Big 12. The Aggies would eventually ti e OU with a 13-3 league mark to claim to their fi rst-ever regular-season championship ti tle in 2006-07.

• Both the men’s and women’s basketball programs at A&M and OU have fl ourished over the last fi ve years on the nati onal and Big 12 landscape. The Aggies and Sooners will play each other in both men’s and women’s hoops this weekend with the A&M and (15-2) OU men (16-1) fi rst up on Saturday and the OU (13-2) and A&M (14-1) women on Sunday. All four teams are a combined 58-6 overall with two losses or less on the season.

• The Aggies will face all of their Big 12 South counterparts in fi ve of its fi rst six league games of the season. A&M’s tough fi ve-game stretch began with Texas Tech on Jan. 13 and is followed up by an assortment of top 25 foes (even on their hosti le home courts) in No. 3 Oklahoma on Jan. 18 in Norman, Okla., No. 5 Baylor on Jan. 21 in College Stati on, No. 22 Oklahoma State on Jan. 24 in Sti llwater, Okla., and No. 16 Texas on Jan. 28 in Austi n, Texas. By far, the Aggies have the toughest go-around of any league team to open up the Big 12 season. Baylor is the next closest to a head-to-head combat with four of its next fi ve against nati onally-ranked competi ti on in No. 20 Iowa State, OSU, A&M, Tech and OU.

TEXAS HOLD ‘EMThe Aggie defense has held all 15 of their opponents this season to under 60 points a game including an opponent season-low 36-point producti on by Stephen F. Austi n on Dec. 2. It is no coincidence that A&M’s pressure is one of the best in the nati on and in the Big 12. The Aggies have forced opponents to an average of 23.5 turnovers per game with a turnover margin of +6.3 which

ranks second best in the Big 12 behind OU (+6.8).

THE BIGGEST GAINThree A&M and OU seniors combined have made a commit-ment in the weight room and seen recent gains in their quest to prepare for next-level play aft er graduati on. Texas A&M se-nior center La Toya Micheaux lost close to 20 pounds in the fall as well as Oklahoma senior forward Ashley Paris who lost 25 pounds. A&M’s Danielle Gant, an under-sized post player and a potenti al WNBA fi rst-round pick, dropped close to 10 pounds. Overall, Texas A&M strength and conditi oning coach Jennifer Jones along with director of performance nutriti on Amy Bragg have helped the Aggies to their fi tt est year of com-peti ti on this season with the team averaging less than 20.5 percent of body fat in comparison to 26.9 percent in 2006-07. Another notable gain was A&M sophomore point guard Syd-ney Colson’s ability to gain muscle and lose body fat while sti ll recovering from her ACL injury in June.

MISS OKLAHOMAIf pageants were won on the basketball court and in the class-room, then senior All-America candidate Danielle Gant would defi nitely be up for the ti tle of Miss Oklahoma. The Oklahoma City nati ve out of Putnam City West High School is playing some of her best basketball of the season and her career hav-ing scored in double fi gures over the last fi ve ballgames in-cluding a perfect 10-for-10 performance at Missouri in the Big 12 opener on Jan. 10 to gain nati onal headlines. She recently posted her third double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds against Texas Tech on Jan. 13. Gant is also a perfect 12-for-12 from the charity stripe over the last three contests including 2-for-2 at Florida State on Jan. 5, 2-for-2 at Missouri on Jan. 10 and a career-best 8-for-8 versus the Lady Raiders. Earlier this year, she was honored for her academic progress toward her degree in leadership as the recipient of the Academic Momentum Award presented to student-ath-letes who have demonstrated signifi cant academic improve-ment throughout their collegiate careers with the ability to balance textbooks with playbooks.

A NEW PLACE TO CALL HOMEThe Cox-McFerrin Center for Aggie Basketball was formally dedicated on Saturday morning ushering a new era for the men’s and women’s program in Aggieland. The $23 million, 68,000-square-foot state-of-the art center houses practi ce courts and training rooms for both teams, along with an array of related faciliti es and offi ces. It is regarded as one of the pre-mier faciliti es of its kind in the nati on. The facility is named for Kay ‘02 and Jerry ’72 Cox of Houston and Dorothy and Arti e ‘65 McFerrin of Kingwood, major donors for the project.

AGGIE NOTABLE QUOTABLES

“Oklahoma is playing at the top of its game right now. They get very good bench play. When you get into the Big 12, you end up sett ling with an eight-to-nine player rotati on. Oklahoma has found its chemistry, like all of us are trying to fi nd. (Oklahoma head coach) Sherri Coale has done a good job. Who do you put in the starti ng fi ve out there when all of your kids know the off ense and defense well? The reason their team is bett er, is because there is more balance. It’s not just the Courtney Paris show. You have to worry about the others. As soon as you put more att enti on on her, Ashley (Paris), (Amanda) Thompson and (Danielle) Robinson will kill you, while Whitney Hand will drill you with threes. Robinson reminds me of (A&M’s) Donald Sloan and how he goes to the hole so well. She is by far the quickest point guards in the league and in the country. She had a great matchup with Kansas State’s Shalee Lehning in their last ballgame which was a great Round 1 for two of the top point guards in our league.” – Texas A&M Head Coach Gary Blair on Oklahoma

“I like our chances. Every year, we have gone up and played well in Oklahoma. Our kids enjoy playing in front of a packed house. The bett er the competi ti on, the bett er the crowd, the bett er we have played. Texas Tech, Baylor and OU. Those are three ven-ues where we have always played well in front of big crowds. Our basketball team is rounding into shape. We have had some bumps and bruises at the point guard positi on, black eyes and all, in preparati on for the OU game. The way our system is, we have to have two healthy point guards in every game we play and we have to have four players in double fi gures like we did against Texas Tech. You cannot rely on just the Danielle Gant and T-Kay (Starks) Show. You need four players in double fi gures. Where it (the scoring) comes from, I don’t care. It helps build morale and great chemistry on our team, when we are depending on everyone to contribute. To play on a nati onal stage on nati onal television, it doesn’t get any bett er that that. It will be worth the price of admission. It will probably be cold outside, but hot inside.” – Coach Blair on playing in Norman

“Over the last six games in the OU series, each game has been a litt le diff erent in the Courtney Paris and La Toya Micheaux era. Both of those two post players have respect for each other. Micheaux doesn’t score a lot, but she adds a lot to our team and how we play that game. Micheaux does a good job of bothering Courtney and is a physical presence inside. It’s not about how hard we guard Courtney, it is about who guards the other four while we are trying to contain her. When we have ball pressure and great help side, that is how our defense works. We try to play make-them-miss defense.” – Coach Blair on the Courtney Paris and La Toya Micheaux matchup and A&M’s defense

“It was very important. Momentum kind of swings our way. We get a litt le confi dence in there aft er coming off two tough road games (at Florida State and Missouri). It is going to be a tough road game at OU. We just have to come together like we did against Texas Tech and keep the momentum going.” – Senior All-America candidate Takia Starks on how important it was to get a win over Texas Tech going into the Oklahoma game

TUCSON, Ariz. – Senior All-America candidate Danielle Gant turned in her fi rst double-double of the season with a game-high 12 points and 10 rebounds as No. 5 Texas A&M held off Arizona, 54-44, at Lute and Bobbi Olson Court at the McKale Center. Gant’s double-double was the 13th of her career, while A&M set a program milestone with its fi rst-ever road victory in the all-ti me series versus Arizona (3-2) in Tucson. The win also catapulted the Aggies to one of their best starts in school history with an un-blemished 4-0 record which includes three consecuti ve victories on the road. Aft er a 9-4 run by Arizona in the opening minutes of the game, A&M stepped up its defensive pressure and took the Wildcats deep into the shot clock on their possessions. Freshman reserve Sydney Carter knocked down a three-pointer at the 9:05 minute mark to relinquish the lead, 13-11, and the Aggies never trailed again. A&M held Arizona to a season-low 24.5 percent (12-of-49) shooti ng from the fl oor, but the Wildcats were able to stay in the ballgame by going nearly perfect from the free throw line making 20-of-23 charity att empts including 13 of their 23 fi rst-half points with a 92.9 percent accuracy rate. In the second half of play, the Aggies pushed the lead out to as many as 13 points as Carter hit the front end of a one-and-one from the free throw line. A&M led most of the second half by double digits, but Arizona got within four with a jumper by Reiko Thomas with under two and a half minutes to go, 48-44. A&M remained composed as Gant and Carter combined for A&M’s 6-0 scoring run in the fi nal stretch to hold off the Wildcats’ last second-att empt at an upset. Senior All-America candidate Takia Starks was the only other

A&M player in double fi gures with 10 points and a season-high seven rebounds, despite a sprained ankle in the fi rst half.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – No. 3 Texas A&M remained undefeated on an already record-breaking season with a 64-50 victory over No. 24 TCU before 5,395 fans at Reed Arena. The Aggies improved their school-record start to a perfect 10-0, while the Lady Frogs dropped their second-straight top 25 matchup to fall to 8-4 on the season. The win marked the fi rst ti me in school history that A&M has beaten two top 25 non-conference opponents in regular-season acti on next to a 56-50 win over No. 23 Pitt sburgh in the State Farm Tip-Off Classic on Nov. 16. Senior All-America candidate Takia Starks knocked down a season-high tying 21 points including 18 in the fi rst half which was three points less than TCU’s overall team score at halft ime, 35-21. The A&M defense caused havoc for the Lady Frogs from the get-go as they committ ed three quick turnovers in the opening minutes of the ballgame and 13 total in the fi rst half alone which was more than the team’s season average of 12.4 which ranked No. 6 nati on-ally among NCAA stati sti cal leaders. TCU was able to close the gap to as few as six on two free throw makes by Micaela Younger with 13:33 remaining in regulati on, 41-35, but it wasn’t enough to hold off the Aggies who have now won 36 straight against non-conference opponents at home. Freshman Adaora Elonu was the only other Aggie player to reach double fi gures with 10 points, while senior center La Toya Micheaux added a career-high tying 14 rebounds and sophomore point guard Sydney Colson dished out eight assists in the winning

cause. Meanwhile, TCU was paced by TK LaFleur, a junior transfer from Nebraska, who turned in a game-high 22 points.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Preseason Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Year Tanisha Smith scored a career-high 17 points off the bench as No. 3 Texas A&M had its 12-game win streak snapped by Florida State with a 60-53 road loss at the Donald T. Tucker Civic Center. Florida State’s Tanae Davis-Cain scored 11 of her 13 points in the second half of play. Davis-Cain and teammate Courtney Ward combined for 10 points as the Seminoles (12-4) ran off 16 straight to take a 56-50 lead with 3:35 remaining in regulati on. A&M led by as many as 17 points with 13:27 to go, but FSU closed the game with a 20-3 surge to seal the upset. Senior All-America candidate Danielle Gant added 10 points along with seven rebounds and two blocked shots. It was a tale of two halves as the Aggie defense held Florida State to a season-low 19 fi rst-half points on 5-of-24 shooti ng from the fl oor, but the Seminoles improved their shooti ng percentage to 65.2 percent (15-of-23) with their late second-half rally, while A&M shot 7-of-32 from the fi eld in the second half. The Aggies (12-1) will shake off the loss and ready themselves this week for one of the toughest league schedules ahead of them. A&M remains the frontrunner of four Big 12 teams cur-rently ranked in the top 10 in this week’s Associated Press Poll.
