INTRAMURALSINTRAMURAL OFFICIALSIntramural Sports is HIRING! Interested in becoming an intramural official? You will make new friends, work flexible hours, earn money, and most importantly, you never have to work a Friday or Saturday. Each year, the intramural department hires over 300 student officials for the intramural program. Officials in each sport go through a paid training program. Training occurs over a two-week period before play begins and includes classroom sessions along with on-site clinics. In the classroom, sports rules and officiating techniques are discussed and reviewed. The clinics consist of veteran officials demonstrating proper court/field coverage and scrimmage games. Please come to one of the following information sessions in room SRC 281 for the sport you may be interested in officiating.

FALL 2014 SCHEDULE

Step 1: Logging into your IMLeagues account 1. All intramural participants will be required to log in to IMLeagues through the Rec Sports website: http://recsports.tamu.edu. 2. Each participant will need to know their NET ID in order to log in.

You will go to the intramurals tab and then click on RecConnect. This will let you enter your NET ID and you will be taken to the IMLeagues site.

Step 2: Signing up a team for an Intramural sport 1. Log in to your IMLeagues account by going to http://recsports.tamu.edu. 2. Once in IMLeagues, click on the Intramural Sports tab near the top

of the page in the maroon box under ‘Texas A&M University.’ 3. A list of all active sports will populate. Select the sport and the

league that you wish to play in. 4. Once you have clicked on the sport and league you wish to join, a

list of divisions will populate. Click the ‘Register/signup’ button on the right of your desired division.

5. Fill in your team information and click the ‘create team’ button. You will then be taken to the payment page where you will pay online for your team with any major credit card.

6. If you need to pay CASH for your team, please make sure to come by the Intramural Office prior to the registration time. We cannot accept cash online, but we can still get you signed up.

Step 3: Joining an intramural sports team 1. You can join a team in one of three ways! a. For TEAM CAPTAINS ONLY:

• Create team; complete all necessary trainings and payments.

• Invite members to the team. Click on ‘invite members’ on team page; all invited members must accept the invitation

to be added to your team. • If team member is already registered on IMLeagues, search

for his/her name, and invite him/her. If they are not registered, invite him/her through email.

b. Join a team: • From the IMLeagues intramural page, choose the sport and

league you wish to play in. A list of all teams in all divisions will populate. Click the green ‘join team’ button next to the team you wish to play with.

• A message will be sent to the captain of the team you asked to join; once the captain has given approval, you will be

added to the roster. c. Join as a FREE AGENT: • You can list yourself as a free agent in as many divisions

within a league as you would like. You will be visible to all members of the site and can request to join teams, or you can put information about yourself so teams can request to add you to their team.

• This does not guarantee that you will be invited to join a team. • Click the sport and league you wish to sign up in. For each

division in which you are available to play, click the ‘register/signup’ button to the right and select ‘FREE AGENT’.

• Enter all necessary information and select ‘post listing’. • Sign up for as many divisions as you want, but you may only

join one single gender and one co-ed team per sport.

REC CENTER EXPANSION

INDOOR LAP POOL

Since the opening of the Student Recreation Center almost twenty years ago, the Texas A&M student body has increased by twenty-five percent and continues to grow substantially. With an average of over 1.2 million entries per year, the Rec Center has essentially operated at capacity from the beginning. In order to address this problem and accommodate a larger portion of the student body, Rec Sports has embarked upon an extensive expansion/renovation of the Rec Center.

The $54 million expansion/renovation project includes 113,000 square feet of new construction, which will increase the size of the Rec Center by twenty-five percent, and 56,000 square feet of renovation. The project is being funded without an increase in the Recreational Sports fee!

Specific improvements to the facility include:

• Increased Strength & Conditioning Space: The size of the current weight room, which houses both strength and cardio equipment, will be doubled and will include the addition of a personal training suite and an indoor turf area for movement training such agility and speed work, plyometrics, bodyweight and core training exercises.

• Additional Gymnasium: The addition of a new gymnasium will increase open-recreation opportunities by adding multi-use court space that can accommodate 2 basketball courts, 4 volleyball courts and 1 soccer court.

• New Activity Rooms: Three new activity rooms will be added to provide additional space for Group RecXercise classes, Specialty Classes and heavy bag/boxing activities. Two larger, multi-use rooms will be constructed to accommodate student groups and outside events, and a large, auditorium-style meeting room seating approximately 120 will also be added.

• Second Entrance: An additional entrance will be built on the south side of the facility, facing Olsen Field.

• Outdoor Plaza: An outdoor plaza will be constructed on top of the expanded weight and fitness room and will include a large patio with outdoor kitchen facilities.

• Additional Pool: An eight-lane, twenty-five-meter indoor lap pool will be added to reduce scheduling conflicts with aquatic events in the natatorium.

• Natatorium Renovation: Retrofitting of all mechanical components, as well as cosmetic upgrades including new tile, paint, lighting, bleachers, etc. will be completed.

• Lighting Retrofit: All light fixtures will be replaced throughout the facility to improve light efficiency and reduce energy costs.

Although the Rec Center will remain open throughout the expansion process and interruption to member access should be limited, some facilities and programs may be unavailable at times.

The expansion and renovation project is scheduled to be complete in January 2016. Upon completion, the Rec Center will be among the nation’s top collegiate recreational facilities.

BECOME A CERTIFIED PERSONAL TRAINERRec Sports is often looking to add high quality, certified personal trainers to our team. If you’re serious about becoming certified and potentially working as a personal trainer for Rec Sports, please contact our Strength & Conditioning Coordinator for more details about the different certification organizations that are available to you.

EXPANSION & RENOVATIONOur Weight and Fitness Room has been overcrowded for many years. As part of the Rec Center expansion and renovation project, we are addressing this issue. Once the expansion is complete, the Weight & Fitness Room will be more than 32,000 square feet—more than double the size of the old room! The room will include a 10,500-square-foot free weight area, almost double the amount of cardio equipment, an indoor turf area for various activities, a personal training suite, and both women’s and men’s restrooms. Although our current situation is not optimal, some exciting things are about to happen in your Student Recreation Center and we are thrilled to be able to expand and improve our facilities for the Texas A&M community!

REC GUIDE 23RECSPORTS.TAMU.EDU

Page 24: Texas A&M Rec Sports Fall 2014 Guide

The Texas A&M Sport Clubs Association provides the opportunity to compete against clubs from other collegiate institutions at the state, regional, or national level in 34 different sports, and allows members to learn or enhance their skills in a recreational setting. Each club is administered by students, has practice times and facilities, and receives some monetary support. To help subsidize the cost of travel and equipment, clubs may charge dues and participate in fund-raising activities.

While the Sport Clubs staff and the Department of Recreational Sports assist clubs in securing needed funds, facilities and equipment, the emphasis is on student leadership and development. Students are directly responsible for all aspects of operating and managing a successful, competitive organization. As a result, Sport Clubs present a unique opportunity for students to develop both athletic and leadership abilities.

Since 1974, the Sport Clubs program has captured over 200 overall team and single-event national championships and hundreds of conference championships.

For more information, the names of current club representatives, and Sport Club event schedules, visit the Sport Club Office in room 250 of the Student Rec Center, call 979.862.1996, e-mail [email protected] or visit our website at recsports.tamu.edu.
