WeiGht & FitneSS room

Since the opening of the Student Recreation Center almost twenty years ago, the Texas A&M student body has increased by twenty-five percent and continues to grow substantially. With an average of over 1.2 million entries per year, the Rec Center has essentially operated at capacity from the beginning. In order to address this problem and accommodate a larger portion of the student body, Rec Sports has embarked upon an extensive expansion/renovation of the Rec Center.

The $54 million expansion/renovation project includes 113,000 square feet of new construction, which will increase the size of the Rec Center by twenty-five percent, and 56,000 square feet of renovation. The project is being funded without an increase in the Recreational Sports fee!

Specific improvements to the facility include:

• Increased Strength & Conditioning Space: Size of the current weight room, which houses both strength and cardio equipment, will be doubled and will include the addition of a personal training suite and an indoor turf area for movement training such agility and speed work, plyometrics, bodyweight and core training exercises.

• Additional Gymnasium: The addition of a new gymnasium will increase open-recreation opportunities by adding multi-use court space that can accommodate two basketball courts, four volleyball courts and one soccer court.

• New Activity Rooms: Three new activity rooms will be added to provide additional space for Group RecXercise classes, Specialty Classes and heavy bag/boxing activities.

Two larger, multi-use rooms will be constructed to accommodate student groups and outside events, and a large, auditorium-style meeting room seating approximately 120 will also be added.

• Second Entrance: An additional entrance will be built on the south side of the facility, facing Olsen Field.

• Outdoor Plaza: An outdoor plaza will be constructed on top of the expanded weight and fitness room and will include a large patio space with outdoor kitchen facilities.

• Additional Pool: An eight-lane, twenty-five meter indoor lap pool will be added to reduce scheduling conflicts with aquatic events in the natatorium.

• Natatorium Renovation: Retrofitting of all mechanical components, as well as cosmetic upgrades including new tile, paint, lighting, bleachers, etc. will be completed.

• Lighting Retrofit: All light fixtures will be replaced throughout the facility to improve light efficiency and reduce energy costs.

Although the Rec Center will remain open throughout the expansion process and interruption to member access should be limited, some facilities and programs may be unavailable at times.

The expansion and renovation project is scheduled to be complete in January 2016. Upon completion, the Rec Center will be among the nation’s top collegiate recreational facilities.

Although the situation is not optimal, we assure you that we have done our best to set up this temporary location to accommodate our members’ needs! We will still be able to provide almost all of the strength and cardio equipment that was previously located in the weight and fitness room including: a wide variety of cardiovascular equipment, a large free weight area, all of our plate loaded and pin select strength machines, and an area for stability balls, medicine balls, ab/core training, and stretching. Our strength and conditioning staff is always available to help you learn how to properly use the equipment, give you exercise advice, or even give you a spot during a lift. Please feel free to ask our friendly staff members for assistance whenever needed!

As part of the Rec Center expansion and renovation project, we are addressing the issues of lack of space and overcrowding in the Weight and Fitness Room. The room is currently 14,500 square feet and after the expansion it will be more than 32,000 square feet! The room will include a 10,500 square foot free weight area, almost double the amount of cardio equipment, an indoor turf area for various activities. There will also be a personal training suite, and both women’s and men’s restrooms. Although our current situation is not optimal, some exciting things are about to happen in your Student Recreation Center and we are thrilled to be able to expand and improve our facilities for the Texas A&M community!

The Texas A&M SportClubs Association provides the opportunity to compete against clubs from other collegiate institutions at the state, regional, or national level in 34 different sports, and allows members to learn or enhance their skills in a recreational setting. Each club is administered by students, has practice times and facilities, and receives some monetary support. To help subsidize the cost of travel and equipment, clubs may charge dues and participate in fund-raising activities.

While the Sport Clubs staffand the Department of Recreational Sports assist clubs in securing needed funds, facilities and equipment, the emphasis is on student leadership and development. Students are directly responsible for all aspects of operating and managing a successful, competitive organization. As a result, Sport Clubs present a unique opportunity for students to develop both athletic and leadership abilities.

Since 1974, the Sport Clubs program has captured over 200 overall team and single-event national championships and hundreds of conference championships.
