Based on the positive feedback we received after the inaugural

edition of last year’s Sports & Recreation Guide, we’ve updated and expanded the 2013 version.

Last year’s edition received rave reviews from parents, kids, teachers, program directors and city and county employees. All were very happy to finally have available to the Valley this comprehensive guide to programs and their respective contact information.

Program updates were provided by the individual programs—some remained the same, some added information such as new dates and revised organizational information. For instance, Teton

Valley Baseball & Softball Association changed some of the components of their programs so, if your children are interested in baseball and softball be sure to read their listings.

New this year is a calendar highlighting important registration dates and seasons of play. Some programs were unable to provide concrete dates and times of play, so we used general dates based on prior years’ schedules. If you need updated or current information be sure to contact the league organizer listed or check out the relevant websites.

We’ve tried our hardest to make this as all-inclusive as possible. If we’ve missed a program, our sincere apologies. Be sure to let me

know so it can be added to a future edition.

As always, your feedback is welcome. If you have any ideas on how to improve this publication, please let me know. My email is [email protected]

Youth baseball and softball are organized under Teton Valley Baseball and Softball Association (TVBSA).

t-Ball (Coed ages 5, 6 and 7) The goal of T-ball is to teach the fundamentals of baseball, fielding and hitting in a supportive team environment. Batters hit the ball which is baseball sized and soft, from a tee or are pitched to from the coach if preferred.

rooKie (Coach Pitch) (Coed ages 7, 8 and 9 ) players at this level learn basic skills and how and where to make plays. Coaches pitch to the batters and all players bat each game and play every inning in the field.

BaSeBall (Boys ages 9, 10, 11 and 12). This level builds on fundamentals and team participation. Competitiveness is secondary to providing a variety of playing opportunities in order that the fundamentals are established and play can be taken to the next level.

BaBe rutH (Boys ages 13-15) Babe Ruth Baseball is a competitive traveling league bound by the rules of Babe Ruth Baseball. The boys will play at home and travel to Rexburg, St. Anthony and Sugar City for their regular season and tournaments. The boys must commit to help fundraise and find sponsors.

Athletes will have oppor-tunities to compete at Jackson Hole Club Series Races, United States Ski and Snowboard Associa-tion events, and local Rail Jams. Athletes are trained, prepared, and supported

Girl’s softball is organized through TVBSA. It is both recreational and competitive depending upon the age of the girls. First and foremost, softball is about having fun. Everything else is secondary. The girls begin to become more competitive in the Minors, which is made up of 5th and 6th grade girls. We will organize all-star teams for Minors and Majors post season. All-stars will play in the local Top of the Tetons tournament and will travel.

t-Ball (Coed ages 5, 6 and 7) The goal of T-ball is to teach the fundamentals of baseball, fielding and hitting in a supportive team environment. Batters hit the ball which is baseball sized and soft, from a tee or are pitched to from the coach if preferred.

rooKie (Coach Pitch) (Coed ages 7, 8 and 9) players at this level learn basic skills and how and where to make plays. Coaches pitch to the batters and all players bat each game and play every inning in the field.

MinorS SoFtBall: (Girls 3rd, 4th and 5th grades) Girls learn fundamental concepts of softball including pitching and proper field play as they get their first taste of competitive play.

MaJorS SoFtBall: (6th, 7th, 8th and 9th grades) The Majors offers girls true competitive softball in which fundamental skills of the game are fine-tuned.

WAIVER OF LIABILITYI hereby certify that _____________________________ is in good health and capable of participating safely in the Junior Jazz Youth Basketball Program. I also accept total responsibility for full pay-ment of any medical, accident or related bills incurred by my child while participating in said program. Furthermore, I release and discharge the Teton Valley Recreation Association, School District #401, and their employees and volunteers, from any liability for injuries to participants or attendees, property loss or damage occurring in connection with this program.

PARENT AGREEMENT1. I will be a positive role model and will set a good example of sportsmanship, commitment, humility, and keeping perspective. I will show uncommon respect and support for coaches, referees, scorekeepers, the other team, all team members, their parents and the facilities.

2. I will place the emotional and physical well being of my child ahead of my personal desire to win and will support my child with my encouragement, interest and involvement. I understand that the emphasis of this program is on player participation and learning.

3. I pledge to remember that my child plays sports for his or her enjoyment, not mine, and I will do my best to make youth sports fun for my child.

4. I will provide positive encouragement for both teams and will refrain from making insulting comments to any players, parents, officials or coaches. I will ask my child to treat other players, coaches, fans and officials with respect regardless of race, sex, creed, or ability.

5. I will be responsible for the behavior and safety of all children I bring to the school and will not allow them to wander unsupervised during the games.

6. I will support the coach and let the coach do the coaching, offering and providing assistance when asked, providing transportation or whatever I am capable of doing.

7. I will get my child to practices and games ... on time! This is the only way to honor and respect the commitment made by the coaches and other players.

8. I will familiarize myself with the game—how it is played and what the basic rules are—so I can help teach these rules to my child and share in his/her enjoyment of the sport.

9. I pledge to remember that the game is for the kids ... not the adults.
