FOR RELEASE: June 12, 2015 Texas Governor Further Restricts Texans’ Access to Abortion Gov. Abbott signs anti-abortion bill into law Austin, TX—On Friday, Gov. Greg Abbott signed a bill into law, HB 3994, that will cut many abused and neglected teenagers off from the process they use to access abortion and requires all Texans to show an ID to get an abortion. “Gov. Abbott had the power to stop vulnerable Texans from being put in danger, but instead he put politics before Texans’ health and safety,” Heather Busby, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Texas, said. “By signing this cruel bill into law, Gov. Abbott has blocked abused and neglected teenagers’ access to vital health care and put their lives in jeopardy.” Gov. Abbott’s decision to sign HB 3994 into law comes three days after the 5 th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld HB 2, an anti-abortion law passed in 2013 that has forced abortion clinics across the state to close. “HB 2 has devastated access to abortion care in Texas. In his role as Attorney General, Gov. Abbott fought to keep HB 2 law, and in his role as Governor he continues to put barriers between Texans and abortion care.” Busby said. HB 3994 will go into effect January 1, 2016. ### Contact: Zoey Lichtenheld, [email protected], m: (512) 920-2046
