Guided Radar with 2-wire system TGF2200 Micro Pulse Level Meter OUTLINE The TGF2200 series is a unique 2-wire continuous level-measuring instrument using TDR technology. The simple and compact design suitable for tank-top installation with no moving parts has a high cost performance with the maintenance-free and low cost installation by the simple 2-wire loop powered system. Thanks to the coaxial probe, single probe and twin probes this continuous level meter is applicable to wide services including liquids, slurries, powders and granules. The keypad operation on the front display allows easy parameter setting including zero point adjustment and measuring range. The micro pulse level meter is suitable for tank and silo inventory for liquids and powders as well as level controls of the intermediate or underground tanks. The device transmits intermittently low-intensity electromagnetic pulse called micro-pulses along a conductor called probe. These pulses travel along the probe at a very high speed. When the pulses reach the interface of gas and liquids, or gas and powders, the pulses are reflected on the interface and travel back along the probe to the level device. The device measures the time from when the pulse is transmitted to when it is received. The traveling speed of the pulses is constant. The half of this time is equivalent to the direct distance from level meter to the surface of the products. The direct distance determined by above calculation is converted into a level value from the predetermined reference point. In some applications the direct distance is converted into the volume or mass using the tank table. These values are output as current signals in the form of output requirements. The traveling speed of the pulses is almost constant which is little affected by changes in pressure and temperature in the tank and is not affected by changes in temperature of the measuring object, its dielectric constant or density. TGF2200 Micro Pulse Level Meter

OUTLINE

The TGF2200 series is a unique 2-wire continuous level-measuring

instrument using TDR technology.

The simple and compact design suitable for tank-top installation

with no moving parts has a high cost performance with the

maintenance-free and low cost installation by the simple 2-wire

loop powered system. Thanks to the coaxial probe, single probe

and twin probes this continuous level meter is applicable to wide

services including liquids, slurries, powders and granules. The

keypad operation on the front display allows easy parameter

setting including zero point adjustment and measuring range. The

micro pulse level meter is suitable for tank and silo inventory for

liquids and powders as well as level controls of the intermediate or

underground tanks.

MEASURING PRINCIPLE

The Guided Radar level meter TGF2200 is a continuous level meter

which has been developed from a proven technology called Time

Domain Reflectometry (TDR). The device transmits intermittently

low-intensity electromagnetic pulse called micro-pulses along a

conductor called probe. These pulses travel along the probe at

a very high speed. When the pulses reach the interface of gas

and liquids, or gas and powders, the pulses are reflected on the

interface and travel back along the probe to the level device. The

device measures the time from when the pulse is transmitted to

when it is received. The traveling speed of the pulses is constant.

The half of this time is equivalent to the direct distance from

level meter to the surface of the products. The direct distance

determined by above calculation is converted into a level value from

the predetermined reference point. In some applications the direct

distance is converted into the volume or mass using the tank table.

These values are output as current signals in the form of output

requirements. The traveling speed of the pulses is almost constant

which is little affected by changes in pressure and temperature

in the tank and is not affected by changes in temperature of the

measuring object, its dielectric constant or density.

① Install the level meter in order to avoid touching the probe with fluid.

② Touching the probe with fluid by incorrect installation causes incorrect measurement.

③ Take a necessary measure by changing direction of inflow from product inlet nozzle, when the probe touches with fluid.

PRECAUTIONS FOR INSTALLING AND USING TGF2200

Observe followings when installing and using TGF2200.

● Install the level meter in the ambient temperature -40 to +80°C around housing.

● Provide a weather protection or the likes to avoid the direct sunshine and rain splash if the level meter is exposed to them.

● Do not install the level meter in the place where a strong vibration is expected.

● Decide the installation location and height considering the dead zone (non-measurable zone) of the TGF2200. The dead zone varies with

the probe to be used and operating conditions. See the section “MEASUREMENT LIMITS.”

● When installing two or more TGF2200s on the same tank, place them at least apart 1 m.

● ln order to prevent the cable from slackening when using the cable probe, set the counter weight afloat above tank base. 0r fix the counter

weight with a tension in the cable.

● Consider the shape and location of the nozzle so that the probe does not touch the nozzle or tank wall.

● Avoid the ingress of foreign materials and coagulation of liquids inside the coaxial probe.

● Fasten the end of the probe to prevent it from vibration for the services where sloshing of liquid is expected in the tank.

● Install the probe apart from agitator or fix the probe at its end to avoid entanglement.

● You can fasten the probe at the end of it, if required so, but not at other positions except coaxial probe. Fixing the probe at the intermediate

position using a supporting lug or other structure is allowed. However, the upper end of supporting structure to fix the probe becomes the

end of probe under which non-measurable zone starts.

● When fixing coaxial probe, do not add an excessive force on it to avoid bending.

● Design the nozzle or installation location to keep a distance to avoid touching the probe with fluid from product inlet nozzle. Touching the

probe with fluid causes a malfunction of the level meter. When the location of level meter cannot be changed, take a necessary measure

such as changing direction of inflow from product inlet nozzle.

Install the level meter preferably directly on the roof of the tank without a nozzle.

Avoid adherence of sticky liquids inside installation nozzle.

① When measuring sticky liquids, avoid the accumulation of the remnants inside installation nozzle.

② Installing the level meter directly on the flange without a nozzle on the roof of the tank is recommended for flange connection

type.

③ Installing the level meter directly on the thread (socket) on the roof of the tank is recommended for thread connection type.

When installing the level meter on the nozzle, do not make it too longer nor protrude it into the inside of tank.

① When installing TGF2200 on the nozzle, make the nozzle length shorter than 150 mm.

The diameter of nozzle must be larger than or at least same as the height of nozzle: Nozzle diameter (d) ≧ nozzle height (h).

lf this condition is not satisfied, the minimum required length of the dead zone starts from the bottom end of the nozzle. It

makes the dead zone longer or may cause a malfunction.

② Do not protrude the end of nozzle into the inside of tank.

Install TGF2200 preferably on the threaded connection (socket)

Installing twin cable probe or twin rod probe

When installing twin cable probe, the diameter of nozzle must be larger than or at least 50 mm: Nozzle diameter (d) ≧ 50 mm. Make

the nozzle length (h) shorter as much as possible.

Installing coaxial probe

The nozzle diameter and length has no effect on the measuring performance.

Installing probes on concrete roof

① When installing probes on the concrete roof, the diameter of hole (d) must be larger than thickness of concrete (t) (+ installation nozzle). The

surface of hole must be smooth.

② When the thickness of concrete (t) is larger than the diameter of hole (d), make the hole larger and install the probe on the pedestal made of

metal, not installing it on the concrete.

Installing probes on a non-metallic tank

Observe followings when installing single rod probe or single cable probe with thread connection.

● Insert a metallic sheet between the level meter and its connection seat on the tank.

● The diameter of metallic sheet is 200 mm or larger.

● Make sure that the connection thread on the level meter is screwed into the end of thread through the sheet.

● Use a flange of 200 mm or larger in diameter instead of connection thread if the metallic sheet is not available.

If you have a device with twin rod probe, twin cable probe or coaxial probe, you can ignore these instructions.

Precautions for installing probes for measuring liquids

Do not install TGF2200 near internal obstacles. Keep a distance from the probe to any obstacles. When installing the probe in a standpipe or

stilling well, do not make the probe contact with inside the pipe.

① Keep a distance from the probe to any obstacles to prevent micro-pulses near probe from being influenced by them. The range

in which the micro-pulses are influenced varies with the type of probe. See table below.

② Provide a standpipe or stilling well either internally or externally to measure the level inside the pipe to avoid obstacles in the

vessel.

③ Keep the probe straight inside the standpipe. Do not make the probe contact with inside wall of the pipe. Do not make it

slack. The contact or slack causes a failure in measurement. Shorten the probe in such cases.

④ The necessary space between the probes and obstacles varies with type of probes. See table below.

Measuring liquids inside pipes

Using a stilling well (internal chamber) and bypass chamber (external chamber) is recommended. Use a standpipe if the level meter is installed

near the tank wall, internal obstacles, agitators or product inlet. Using a standpipe by installing the probe in stilling well (internal chamber) or

bypass chamber (external chamber) reduces the influences from sloshing, foams or bubbles of liquids.

Requirements for the stilling well or bypass chamber

● The internal and external pipes must be metallic or electrically-conductive. If the pipe is not made of metal, provide a pipe

with enough size to secure necessary space for the probe.

● The pipe must be straight. The inside surface must be smooth with its roughness less than 0.1 mm.

● The accuracy of inside diameter must be less than ± 1 mm

● The Internal stilling well must have a vent hole at the higher point than the Max. liquid level.

● The Internal stilling well must have enough gaps between the counter weight and the inside of the pipe to make the liquids

go through easily.

● Install the pipes vertically.

Precautions for using the stilling well or bypass chamber

● Place the probe in the center of the internal stilling well.

● The span of the bypass chamber must cover the Max. and Min. liquid levels: One nozzle must be higher than the Max. level

and another lower than the Min. level.

● The liquids and gases must move smoothly inside the pipes.

● The corrosion or adherence by fluids inside pipe is not allowed.

● Do not let any foreign objects into the pipe.

● The lower zone than bottom of internal stilling well cannot be measured.

Precautions for measuring powders

● Install the probe used for the powders while the tank or silo is empty. Install the level meter without any slack of cable probe.

● Use the probe with the end of probe unfixed when measuring powders.

● Design the shape of nozzle, threaded connection (socket) and their location so that the probe does not touch inside surface

of tank, nozzle or socket.

● Install the probe apart more than 300 mm from the tank or silo wall.

● Install the probe so that its counter weight is located more than 300 mm above the bottom of tank or silo.

● Do not adhere anything on the threaded connection (nozzle) or inside of nozzle when the product is adherent.

● Install the probe as far as possible from the internal obstacles to prevent the probe from being entangled with them even

when the probe moves back and forth.

● Use single cable probe for the measurement of powders. Use the probe with the end of probe unfixed. Make it free to move.

● Do not install the probe near a product inlet. Avoid the probe from touching with infl ow of products.

Start-up

● The start-up indication will appear in 5 seconds after power-on.

● The indication appears in 30 seconds later. Further 10 seconds later the correct measurement starts. The necessary time to get the

correct measurement depends on the measuring conditions.

● The current output becomes approximately 2.8 mA just after power-on. About 10 seconds later 3.6 mA is given and 30 seconds later,

the correct output is given.
