BID OFF SALE
New Sale Format
Sometimes the girls out number the boys, and in this year’s calf crop heifers calves out numbered the bull calves
for a couple of the ranches. With less bulls to sell this year, we have elected to do our sale in a little different
format. Our 2016 sale with be ran as a “bid off sale”.
Here’s how it works:
All bulls will be assigned a base price. If a buyer wishes to bid on a bull they will submit their bidder number and
dollar amount on the board under the lot number.
As other buyers place bids, the bidder will be allowed to raise his/her bid. If the bid has been raised to a point that
a bidder no longer wishes to bid, the bidder can drop out by crossing off his bidder number on the board. The
bidder can then move to another bull.
Bidding will close at approximately 3:00 PM.
If a bull has more than one active bid at closing (3:00 pm); that bull will be up for a bid-off starting at the closing
dollar amount. We will begin bid offs with the bull that has the highest bid. This will allow a bidder who is out bid
to drop to another bull.
If at the end of the auctioned bulls, you are the only active bidder you are the owner of the bull.
In order for this to be a silent type auction, we will have a bid-leader (impartial person) available to post
bids if a bidder so choses. For example, I want to bid on a bull but I do not want for others to know what
I’m bidding on. I can have the bid-leader place my bid on the board.
We will also take bids over the phone.
If a buyer wants to preview the bulls early and needs to leave before the sale ends, we can have bids
placed for them.
Bulls can be viewed at the ranches anytime before the sale. After the sale: bulls not sold on sale day will
be offered for private treaty on a first come, first serve basis at the base price.
We invite and encourage you call us if you have any questions regarding
the new sale format.
The 2016 Triple Play Sale
will be held in
conjunction with
Huron Continental Marketing’s
cow sale.
Dear Beef Producers:
Welcome to the 11th Annual Triple Play Ranches Production Sale. First and foremost, we want to say thank you!
It’s always a pleasure doing business with each of you and we are sincerely grateful for your interest in and
support of our breeding programs.
While our numbers are not large, we have collectively strived to put together a set of functional bulls that will
support performance, carcass quality, and maternal traits in their offspring allowing for pounds on sale day and
quality replacement females. With one exception, all of the bulls are March and April born calves and have
been fed on a growing ration for longevity. Coming from three different ranches and three different feed
programs the bulls came in with an overall adjusted weaning weight of nearly 750 pounds. You will notice that
nearly all of the bulls are well above average or near the top of the chart for weaning and yearling EPDs. With
the final product being pounds on sale day these growth numbers can add dollars to the bottom line.
We are sincerely honored to have you evaluate our genetics and invite you to visit any of our ranches to view
the cattle prior to sale day. We look forward to seeing you on March 10th at Huron Continental Marketing.
Sincerely,
The Volek, Forbes, And Leonhardt Families

EPDs – What they mean?
Birth Weight (BW): predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight. (actual birth weights can be deceptive as the environment, nutrition, and over due calves are key factors).
Weaning Weight (WW): predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (Adjusted to age of dam and 205 days of age). This an indicator of growth from birth to weaning. Higher number preferred.
Yearling Weight YW): predicts the difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This an indicator of growth from birth to yearling. Higher number preferred.
Milk (MK): The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight.
Total Maternal (TM): An index that combines growth and milk information as a prediction of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. A greater TM value means a mother that returns comparatively higher weaning weights on her calves. TM Index = MK EPD + ½ WW EPD.
Yield Grade (YG): Differences in yield grade score, which is a predictor of percent retail product. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio.
Calving Ease Direct (CED): Represented as percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease.
www.gelbvieh.org
Carcass Weight (CW): Differences in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint. Higher number preferred.
Ribeye Area (REA): Differences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater are preferable.
Marbling (MB): Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed inmarbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades
Feeder Profit Index (FPI): An economic selection index designed to aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny will perform in the feedlot and are sold on grade and yield. Well ranking sires for FPI have higher marbling and carcass weight than their contemporaries. As a terminal index, little emphasis is put on maternal traits such as stayability and calving ease.

Sire Selection: A large portion of a ranchers revenue comes from pounds sold on sale day. If you are looking to put your cow herd on the fast-track to herd improvement, sire selection is key to meeting your goals. While we believe structure and phenotype are essential in the selection process we encourage you to take into account EPDs and carcass data. Understanding EPD data is a useful tool in making the best sire selection for your herd.
Multi-Breed Genetic Evaluation - All of the AGA EPDs are backed by the industry’s largest and most robust multi-breed international genetic evaluation in the world. Growth and carcass EPDs for Gelbvieh and Balancer animals are directly comparable to Simmental, Red Angus, Shorthorn, Limousin and a growing number of other breeds. The multi-breed EPDs combine pedigree, performance, ultrasound, carcass and genomic data into one easy to use set of numbers. Seedstock breeders and their commercial customers can have confidence in the AGA’s EPDs to evaluate the genetic merit between breeds for both purebred and hybrid seedstock.

raised and has been a true standout since he hit the ground. He phenotypically
excels from every angle. He’s massive yet smooth, stout yet flexible, and has the

the top 1% for YG, top 20% for CW, and 25% for WW. A bull with fresh genetics
that covers all the bases of efficient beef production and we feel is a true herd sire
candidate!. Tested homo black and tested homo polled. HD profile EPDs

Lot 36 – A black fancy purebred heifer that gets your

ranch. Cow power here, but has that show ring
look.
Lot 38 - A black fancy heifer that has proven cow
genetics in her pedigree. Very well balanced.
Lot 34 - This red balancer heifer is high quality and easier fleshing. Her pedigree dates back to the 80F heifer we purchased from Goldux Gelbvieh several years ago.
Lot 37 – This black attractive daughter of Bushwacker will work well in the show ring or in the pasture.
This year we are offering another fancy set of heifers. The offering of this group of heifers has been a tough one. They are the keeping kind. Selected for their maternal traits and complete balance. A few show heifer prospects plus each of the offering should make a great cow. Very strong cow families and longevity can be found in their pedigrees. No extra feed to these heifers just a good growing ration and they are easy keepers.
