A Message From Pastor Ben

One Month to Live: Learn Humbly

One thing that many of us are not all that good at is learning humbly. But people who face the end of their lives seem to have a remarkable humility. They have to depend on others. They are no longer self-sufficient or proud. Yet in their weakness they discover a liberating truth.

God’s grace is sufficient, for His power is made perfect in our weakness.

We have this power available to us, to help us in our marriages, help us in our finances, help us in our families, to help us in our workplace.

But do we fully use all this amazing power God has given to us? Instead we try to do things by ourselves, our own way, and we don’t want help from anyone. Ever. Think of the way a man never read the instruction manual when he gets a new ‘toy’.

But we need to learn humbly, and acknowledge that God is there, and His power is available for us to use. We also have his instruction manual, the Bible to help us to learn humbly.

Today we will follow the story of Peter who had to learn humbly. He was proud and boastful, but when Jesus looked at him after the rooster crowed, he wept bitterly. His world came crashing down, and it forced him to eat humble pie.

But that was when Jesus stepped back in. After he rose again, he reinstated Peter, and extended the grace we desperately need and crave, and Peter didn’t forget. He continued to learn humbly as he journeyed with God.

I pray each of us learn to do the same this week, and rather than do anything under our own steam. Seek God, and use His power in our life. Ben.

LCA News

Iraq Crisis The Lutheran family worldwide (through LWF) is responding quickly to the crisis in Iraq. Christians are fleeing northern Iraq (where their communities have lived almost 2000 years) under the threat of death by ISIS. As they and other displaced people reach the relative safety of the Kurdish-controlled Nineveh plain, our Lutheran team will meet them with:

• clean water ($38 per family) – 12,500 families • two-month food baskets ($53 per family) – 2500 families • trauma counselling ($6 per person) – 5000 people.

Our team is working with other churches around the world through ACT Alliance. Our total Lutheran plan is costed at $711,000. Find out more, and donate, at Australian Lutheran World Service.

South Sudan Crisis In South Sudan, our Lutheran team has been forced to evacuate from Maban Country following the targeted killing of six aid workers from other agencies. We thank God all 27 members of the Lutheran team are safe. More than 127,000 refugees and community members in Maban County need life-saving care. That’s why, along with other aid agencies, our Lutheran team remains committed to the work there. We will return, and work will resume, as soon as staff safety is acceptable. ALWS has committed $600,000 to South Sudan in 2014, and the same amount for 2015. For more information, and to donate: Australian Lutheran World Service. Longest Lutheran Lunch Sunday 26 October is only 73 days away. That means it's time to register for the Longest Lutheran Lunch! (Remember, you can hold your Lunch whenever you want!) When you register, you’ll receive five FREE Longest Lutheran Lunch bandannas! You can use them as prizes on the day, incentives to get people involved, bandages instead of bandaids for kitchen slip-ups, neck-tie, mask, wristband, serviette, hanky or a fun photograph for your church newsletter or local newspaper. (Wait till you see the front cover of September The Lutheran!) go to LCA website to register.
