Corvair w is e , I did s pe nd s om e tim e and m one y doing a com ple te tune up on th e 66 Monz a 140. Th e carbs , all four of th e m , h adn't be e n re built in 5-6 ye ars and s ince I don't drive it on a daily bas is and s om e tim e s don't for w e e k s at a tim e , I as h am e d to adm it, it w as tim e for it to ge t s om e TLC.

I purch as e d an Ignitor 1 from Clark s , re built th e carbs , ins talle d ne w plugs , dis tributor cap and rotor and now it

runs e ve n be tte r th e n e ve r! Als o, afte r inje cting s e ve ral cans of 134A th e air conditioning is putting out nice cold air. Jus t in tim e for th e h e at w ave w e are e xpe rie ncing. It is s uch a good fe e ling to do all th os e th ings and th e n h ave th e ple as ure of driving s uch a w onde rful little car. Ooops ! I forgot to te ll you, I occas s ionally put s om e AV gas , w h ich is 101 octane , in th e tank . So, I drove dow n to th e Te rrible H e rbs t in Bullh e ad City and put in five gallons of it at $5.9 9 9 pe r gallon. Maybe th at 104 additive is be tte r afte r all, h m m m m m .

W h ile carbure tors can be s w appe d from AIR to non-AIR e ngine s (and vice ve rs a) and function pre tty w e ll, th e AIR carbure tors w e re s pe cially calibrate d to provide th e de s ire d air/fue l ratios to m e e t e m is s ions re gulations . Th e s e re gulations firs t took e ffe ct s tarting in th e 19 66 m ode l ye ar, w h e n all Corvairs de live re d in California, e xce pt th os e w ith turboch arge rs or air-conditioning w e re re q uire d to h ave th e Air Inje ction Re actor s ys te m . (19 66 w as th e las t ye ar for th e turbo e ngine and th us w as give n dis pe ns ation. Th e A/C Corvairs w e re give n a one -ye ar re prie ve , too, appare ntly s ince th e te s ting of both A/C w ith AIR w as not ye t com ple te .) But for 19 67, all Corvairs de live re d in California re q uire d th e AIR s ys te m and for th e follow ing ye ars (19 68-69 ), all Corvairs produce d h ad th e AIR s ys te m .

Know ing th at th e California e m is s ions re gulations w e re to tak e e ffe ct for 19 66, Ch e vrole t h ad th e Roch e s te r Carbure tor divis ion re calibrate th e 19 66 Corvair carbure tors inte nde d for th e AIR e ngine s . Th e re w e re th re e m ajor ch ange s m ade . Firs t, th e m ain je t s iz e w as re duce d tw o s iz e s from 0.051" to 0.049 ". Ne xt, an additional air-ble e d h ole w as adde d to th e idle /off-idle circuit. Th is air ble e d w as locate d in th e barre l about 1/2" above th e off-idle trans ition s lot. Th e e ffe ct of th is ne w air ble e d w as to provide be tte r m ixture control unde r trans itional ch ange s . Th is ble e d is bi-dire ctional and can e ith e r flow fue l into th e barre l or air into th e fue l circuit, as ne e de d.

Both of th e s e ch ange s w e re als o include d in th e non-AIR carbure tors , too, e xce pt th at th e m ain je t w as only re duce d one s te p for th e s e carbure tors .

Th e th ird ch ange is of s ignificance and one th at w e w ill e xplore in s om e de tail. It w as only im ple m e nte d in th e AIR carbure tors . Th is ch ange adde d a factory-s e t adjus table air-ble e d valve to a s m all s h e lf in th e th roat jus t above th e ve nturi clus te r (s e e th e ph otos ). Th is ne w valve adde d additional air to furth e r le an th e fue l m ixture going to both th e idle and off-idle s ys te m s . Th e e ffe ct w as to re duce th e rich ne s s of th e idle m ixture , w h ich in

turn re duce d th e m ixture range of th e idle m ixture s cre w and force d th e idle m ixture s cre w to be adjus te d approxim ate ly 3 turns out from a ge ntle s e ating, from th e pre vious 1-1/2 turns . In addition, th e fue l m ixture going to th e off-idle trans ition s lot w as le ane d out, th us controlling th e m ixture available for part-th rottle and low -s pe e d ope ration. Since th is ne w air ble e d h ad an adjus table valve , th e Roch e s te r factory w as able to accurate ly s e t th e de s ire d m ixture ratio going to th e s e tw o circuits . Diffe re nt e ngine /trans m is s ion com binations re q uire d s ligh tly diffe re nt s e ttings . But once s e t, it w as inte nde d to be pe rm ane ntly s e t and not ch ange d or re adjus te d in th e fie ld.

From w h at w e h ave be e n able to de te rm ine , th e re w e re th re e ve rs ions of th is adjus table valve , all s e rving th e s am e function but diffe ring in appe arance . Air flow s to th e valve via th e s lot on e ith e r s ide of th e h e ad.

Th e firs t is a bras s valve w ith a h e ad about 1/4" in diam e te r and w ith a s cre w drive r s lot vis ible w h e n ins talle d. It h as a th re ade d outs ide diam e te r to fit th e h ole . W e w ill call th is a Type 1 valve .

Th e s e cond type of valve is als o bras s and jus t a s m alle r ve rs ion of th e Type 1 valve , be ing about 3/16" in diam e te r. It is not picture d h e re .

Th e Type 3 valve is diffe re nt in appe arance be ing appare ntly m ade from alum inum and anodiz e d black . It, too, is about 3/16" in diam e te r w ith a th re ade d outs ide and a h ollow ins ide . At th e bottom of th is h ollow ce nte r is a ve ry s m all s cre w drive r s lot. Th is re q uire d a je w e le rs s cre w drive r to fit th e s lot; not ge ne rally a tool in a m e ch anic's toolbox. It w ould appe ar th at th is s cre w drive r s lot w as h idde n from vie w to h ide th e fact th at it w as adjus table , to pre ve nt it from be ing ch ange d or re adjus te d in th e fie ld.

In addition, s om e of th e s e type 3 valve s h ad a s m all dis k place d in th e h ollow ce nte r to furth e r dis courage re adjus tm e nt. Th e h ole in th e ce nte r of th e dis k is NOT an air ble e d, but is th e re to allow a h ook -type tool to be able to re m ove th e dis k . Th is dis k is inte nde d to be a tam pe r-proof cap ins talle d ove r th e valve as s h ow n in th e follow ing ph otos .

Th e obvious re as on for th e tam pe r-proof cap ove r th e valve w as to pre ve nt anyone w h o m igh t not h ave th e k now le dge or s pe cializ e d e q uipm e nt from tam pe ring w ith , or re adjus ting, th is ble e d. Afte r ce s s ation of Corvair production, th is type of carbure tor (w ith th e cap) w as s pe cifie d as th e official re place m e nt carbure tor for a w h ole h os t of both AIR and non-AIR Corvairs of all ye ars .

To furth e r com plicate m atte rs , th e AIR carbure tors all s tarte d production for 19 66 w ith th e Pow e r Enrich m e nt Sys te m (PES) in place and ope rational. But around Fe bruary 19 66, th e PES w as re m ove d from th e AIR carbure tors ins talle d on th e 9 5-h p e ngine s (probably s ince th e s e e ngine s didn’ t de ve lop e nough pow e r to ne e d th e PES) but w as re taine d on th e 110-h p and 140-h p e ngine s . For 19 67 and late r ye ars , th e PES w as re m ove d from all AIR carbure tors .

It w ould be logical to th ink th at for 19 66-67, th e type of valve us e d m igh t be bas e d on th e us e of a PES but no corre lation h as be e n found. In fact for th e s e tw o ye ars it appe are d th at all th re e type s of valve s w e re us e d inte rch ange ably, w ith , m aybe , a h igh e r us e of th e type 3 valve on Pow e rglide e ngine s .

Eigh ty Dollars . Th at w as m y tipping point. It took m e e igh ty dollars to fill th e tank on m y Je e p W rangle r. It w as th e n I de cide d it w as tim e to ge t a ne w , m ore fue l e fficie nt car. It w as als o at th is tim e th at I h ad s old off m y m otorcycle . It w as h ow e ve r not be fore I h ad purch as e d m y us e d Audi A4 w ith double th e m ile age of th e Je e p. So th e re w e w e re , jus t 2 pe ople w ith five m otor ve h icle s in a tract h om e in Las Ve gas . I w as doing daily car juggling to k e e p th e cars w e us e acce s s ible , but k e e p park ing e nforce m e nt from tow ing aw ay one of th e oth e r cars . It is tim e to s im plify m y life . It is tim e for tw o pe ople to h ave tw o m otor ve h icle s . It is one of th e re as ons I h ave de cide d to s e ll m y Corvair.

Anoth e r re as on is our financial s ituation. I don't th ink I w ill h ave th e m one y any tim e s oon to do to th e car w h at I w ant to do to it. I trie d th e tak ing it s low m e th od, but unfortunate ly w ith th e s e old cars , th ings jus t k e e p popping up. Many of th e th e ite m s w e re large price tag ite m s . I've h ad th e turbo re built, re place d th e carbure tor, re place d th e clutch , tw ice . Ne w s prings , ne w s te e ring box, ne w s h ock s . I w as in a h it and run th at cos t m e s om e body w ork . Body w ork th at I'm not e ntire ly h appy w ith and w ant to re do.

I'm not com plaining, th e car h as brough t m e gre at joy ove r th e ye ars and I've e njoye d h aving it. Maybe s om e tim e dow n th e road I'll ge t anoth e r one , but for now I can't k e e p doing w h at I've be e n doing s o it tim e to s e ll th e Corvair.

Finally, th e re is th e lack of tim e . I h ate th at for th e m os t part th e car s its in th e garage w ith out any re al im prove m e nts going on. Part of th at is financial, th e oth e r part is lack of tim e . I h ave too m any th ings going on righ t now to try and w ork on th e Corvair. I don't s e e a ch ange in m y life in th e ne ar future th at w ould m ak e m e be lie ve th at k e e ping th e Corvair w ould be th e righ t ch oice .
