BARB RYAN
Barb Ryan is receiving an honorary degree from the University of Regina for her compassion, kindness and her willingness to nurture everyone and anyone who will let her. Besides her own four children - Erica, Jill, Steve and Jon - the extended family under her care includes refugees, immigrants, and international students who have settled in Regina.
Mothering her own kids gave her good connections in the community that Ryan put to use after her husband Bob died at age 54. She joined the Regina Progress Club, which had provided the down payment for a settlement house for refugees. That experience led her to the Regina Open Door Society and the work the organization does with immigrants. Ryan was deeply moved by the stories of what the immigrants had endured to reach Regina, and their resilience. Since then Ryan has hosted two families from Africa and a refugee family of eight from Syria, helping them to settle in their new home community. She is a member of a support group called Women to Women, where members meet monthly with newcomers to teach them a skill or craft. Through the World University Service of Canada program at the University of Regina, Ryan invites into her home students from other countries who are away from their families. She
has also employed her networking skills in support of fund-raisers such as the Progress Club’s Festival of Trees and the Champagne Classic women’s golf tournament in support of the children’s ward at the Regina General Hospital.
Ryan has been recognized with the 2012 Saskatchewan Diamond Jubilee Award, the 2016 Red Cross Humanitarian Award, the Canada 150 Award, and the Saskatchewan Volunteer Award.
JON RYAN
Honorary degree recipient Jon Ryan will be forever remembered for the touchdown pass he threw that sparked his team’s comeback playoff victory in 2014, sending the Seattle Seahawks to the NFL Super Bowl. The scoring toss also earned Ryan a “first” in the league record book, as the first punter to throw a touchdown pass in a playoff game. Ryan insists one of his greatest accomplishments was to be named a team captain by his fellow teammates for four consecutive years. That recognition, he suggests, came from leading by example on and off the field, and treating everyone he met during his workdays with the same respect.
Ryan was born and raised in Regina. He played running back, placekicker and punter with the Sheldon-Williams Spartans, and then punter and wide receiver for four seasons with the University of Regina Rams. In his final year he was named a Canada West first team

all-star and CIS all-star, as well as receiving three team awards from the Rams.
Ryan began his professional football career as a punter for the CFL’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers for two seasons, and then with the NFL's Green Bay Packers, followed by ten seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. He was part of the Seahawks Super Bowl championship team in 2013. On May 14, 2019, Ryan signed a deal to play with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Ryan founded the Gear Up Foundation to provide proper equipment and more training for coaches working with kids playing minor football in Regina. The Foundation’s programming has since expanded to other communities across Saskatchewan, including support for a start-up team in the northern part of the province.

RENU KAPOOR
Growing up in India, Renu Kapoor absorbed many childhood lessons from her mother and father about being of service to others. She watched her mother help young women in the community further their education, while her father was a founding member of the Rotary service club in India. Kapoor also remembers her parents welcoming into their home students coming from other countries to attend school in their community. She has applied these examples in her professional work as a counsellor, and in her involvement as a volunteer and fundraiser with many organizations and events.
Kapoor earned a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Lucknow, India, and a Master of Science, Social Work from the University of Wisconsin before she and her husband Don settled in Regina in 1965. She worked as a mental health and addictions counsellor with the former Saskatchewan Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission and the Regina Health District for more than 35 years. Over that period and in retirement, her volunteer activities have encompassed Cultural Connections Regina, Canadian Centre for Substance Abuse, the South Saskatchewan Community Foundation, SaskCulture, Regina Public Library, the YWCA of Regina, Health Care Excellence Awards, United Way of Regina, and the Regina Airport Authority. Kapoor has also taken lead roles in several fundraising galas, including India Night, Champions for Mental Health, Moving Forward Together and the RCMP Charity Ball. Her volunteer work has been recognized with the Governor General’s Sovereign Medal, Diamond and Jubilee Medals, University of Regina President’s Community Award, YWCA Volunteer of the Year Award, and the Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal, among many others.
ERIC PETERSON
Eric Peterson was born and raised in Indian Head, Saskatchewan. His acting career began when he took part in a student drama production at the University of Saskatchewan. After his second year he dropped out, working for a semi-professional drama company and then moving to England, where he served as an apprentice stage manager,
45TH SPRING CONVOCATION 6 UNIVERSITY OF REGINA
picking up acting roles where he could. After he returned to Canada, Peterson eventually settled in Toronto where he had opportunities to work in home-grown theatre projects telling Canadian stories. Those experiences had a profound effect on him; he became a life-long advocate for cultural expressions in all of the arts that show what living in Canada and being Canadian means.
Peterson’s long list of acting credits includes The Farm Show, a collective creation based on conversations with people in Ontario’s farm country, and Billy Bishop Goes to War, an enduring musical stage play with Peterson’s long-time collaborator, John Gray. The often-revived production dramatizing the life of World War One fighter pilot Billy Bishop has been a staple for the duo throughout their careers, on stage and on film.
Peterson has also had lead roles in the TV series Street Legal, This is Wonderland, and Saskatchewan’s own Corner Gas, where he played the cantankerous Oscar Leroy. It was a huge thrill to work on a show in his home province, he says, proving that Canada can create successful cultural productions based on who we are. Peterson reprised the Oscar Leroy role in Corner Gas: The Movie, and voices Oscar in the Corner Gas Animated TV series.

GORDON AND JILL RAWLINSON
Both Gordon and Jill Rawlinson were born and raised in Saskatchewan: Jill on a farm near Redvers and Gordon in Prince Albert. Jill received the
Governor General’s Academic Award in high school, studied at the University of Saskatchewan and then graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Gordon received a Bachelor of Commerce degree (with distinction) from the University of Saskatchewan.
Gordon grew up around CKBI radio in Prince Albert, the broadcasting company his father E. A. Rawlinson established in 1946. Gordon expanded the company – Rawlco Radio – to include stations in Regina, Saskatoon and Calgary, all of which have been recognized for their emphasis on community service. That same focus on community is conspicuous in the couple’s lengthy list of philanthropic support directed to health care, education, the arts, and assistance to Aboriginal entrepreneurs and business leaders, primarily through their family foundation (the Lily Street Foundation), which Jill chairs.
A partial list of the many organizations and programs Gordon and Jill have donated to includes the Mother Baby Care Centre at the Regina General Hospital, support for Aboriginal students studying business education at the University of Saskatchewan and several initiatives at the University of Regina. In Prince Albert they support the E. A. Rawlinson Centre for the Arts and the Victoria Hospital Foundation. They have also donated to the Saskatchewan Hospital at the Battlefords and for the development of a multiplex facility in North Battleford. The couple are also major supporters of the United Way in Saskatoon and Regina, and the work of the Canadian Red Cross in Saskatchewan.

This award is to recognize the outstanding academic performance of a graduate student. The decision of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research Scholarship and Awards Committee is based on the quality of the thesis or exhibition, external examiner’s report, quality of the defence, course work, cumulative grade point average, publications and presentations deriving directly from the research done for the thesis/exhibition, and on awards achieved.
This year, the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research is proud to present Dr. Joanne Catherine Weber with this most distinguished prize.
Dr. Weber, receiving a Doctor of Philosophy in Education, graduates with an average of 89.83%. Her supervisor, Dr. Fatima Pirbhai-Illich, says that Dr. Weber’s dissertation project titled Becoming Deaf in the Posthuman Era: Posthumanism Arts-based Research and Deaf Education, “is an original contribution in the interdisciplinary fields of sociology of education, education philosophy, language and literacy education and certainly in deaf education. This is a cutting edge, radical pedagogy for the deaf and hard of hearing. She has the passion and deep desire to work towards ameliorating the harms and violence in the K-12 system that have been perpetrated on young adolescent youth who, like her, have been marginalized by the educational system.”
Dr. Weber says that she applies a new theory to teaching deaf teens who struggle to learn spoken and print English. Since they don’t have full access to a first language (signed or spoken),
they are somewhere between a mother tongue and a second language. Often, their struggle to achieve fluency in speaking, reading and writing English at the same level as their hearing peers would be ascribed to innate or cognitive deficits. She explored her own transformation in becoming a teacher/researcher moving alongside the students in their multiple interactions. Using this theory, she was able to see how interaction with animal, earth and machine unleashed an enormous energy in the students, enabling them to become competent and engaged learners and to increase their language repertoires, self-confidence and engagement with school curricula.
Dr. Weber completed both her course work, project and dissertation within four and a half years while also working full time for the Regina Public School board as the only deaf educator for the deaf in the province of Saskatchewan. Her defence went so well that she was offered a position in an international research consortium housed at the University of British Columbia.
The Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research congratulates Dr. Weber on her achievements and wishes her the best in her future endeavours.

The Bachelor of Education After Degree (BEAD) Convocation Prize was established by the Faculty of Education to encourage and recognize BEAD students. The BEAD Convocation prize is awarded to the most distinguished graduate with an overall internship rating of Outstanding and the highest grade point average in the program. The Faculty of Education is pleased to present the BEAD Convocation Prize to Anya Zimmerman.
Anya was born and raised in Whitehorse, Yukon and has always had a passion for the outdoors and the environment. She attended Jack Hulland Elementary school and graduated from F.H. Collins High School. She went on to receive her Bachelor of Human Kinetics from the University of British Columbia.
While working as an Educational Assistant at the Individual Learning Centre in Whitehorse between 2015 and 2017, Anya became eager to work with youth and to make education a more positive experience in the community. This experience motivated her to return to school to complete a Bachelor of Education.
Anya views her acceptance into the Yukon Native Teacher Education Program as a true privilege and has described the experience as “completely life changing.” This uniquely local education program has offered a perspective and training in education that has been meaningful and transformative for her.
Anya plans to continue her education career in the Yukon where she hopes to promote positive educational experiences and enrich the lives of children and youth in their communities.
The Faculty of Education congratulates Anya on her accomplishments, and wishes her success in her future endeavours.

SASKATCHEWAN TEACHERS’ FEDERATION PRIZE
At each University of Regina convocation ceremony, the Saskatchewan Teacher’s Federation awards a prize to the most distinguished student of the graduating class in the Faculty of Education who does not hold another degree. The Faculty of Education is pleased to present the Saskatchewan Teachers' Federation Award to Samantha Dech.
Samantha graduates with a Bachelor of Education in Elementary Education, Great Distinction, with an overall average of 89.90%. During her studies, Samantha was the recipient of the Academic Silver Prize in 2016, 2017, and 2018. She received the Centennial Merit Plus Scholarship 2015, the Helen Marguerite Fuller Prize for Teaching 2017, as well as the Superannuated Teachers of Saskatchewan Scholarship and the Marlene (Wood) Steininger Memorial Scholarship in Education 2018.
Raised in Balgonie, Saskatchewan, Samantha attended Balgonie Elementary school and graduated from Greenall High School. Early on, her love for learning and children was evident.
Samantha thoroughly enjoyed her four years in the University of Regina’s Elementary Education program. During her undergraduate experience she built strong relationships, engaged in new learning experiences, and grew as a reflective educator. In internship, Samantha realized just how wonderfully rewarding the teaching profession is and achieved an overall internship rating of “Outstanding.”
While excelling in academics, Samantha also demonstrated a commitment to her community and her passion for the arts. Throughout her degree Samantha taught vocal lessons and continues to teach dance within her community.
Samantha plans to substitute teach as she looks for employment for the fall, within school divisions in and around Regina.
The Faculty of Education congratulates Samantha on her accomplishments, and wishes her success in her future endeavours.

The academic regalia worn by the graduates and the members of the platform procession may consist of a gown, a hood or stole (worn over the shoulders), and a hat or mortarboard. All universities have distinctive academic dress for each degree conferred and, at times, for the disciplines in which the degree is awarded. Hence, the colourful variety of academic dress worn by members of the platform procession, who have graduated from dozens of Canadian and international universities, and represent particular groups.
With the exception of students graduating with a PhD and federated college students, graduates wear black gowns. PhD graduates’ gowns are scarlet with royal blue around the collar, down the front and around the sleeves. Students graduating from the University of Regina who have been registered through a federated college wear the following: red gowns for Campion College students, sky blue gowns for First Nations University students, and royal blue gowns for Luther College students. Students are welcome to wear their Indigenous ceremonial dress, other cultural ceremonial dress, or their military or law enforcement dress uniform with, or instead of, the gown at the Convocation ceremonies. In these instances, graduands must still be hooded and wear the University of Regina hood. At today’s ceremony, the Dean of their respective Faculty formally hoods students. The University of Regina also permits members of the Platform Party to hood graduates of their immediate family.

The University of Regina is situated on Treaty 4 lands with a presence in Treaty 6 territory. These are the territories of the nêhiyawak (Cree), Anihšinapek (Saulteaux), and Dakota, Lakota, and Nakoda, and the homeland of the Métis. Today, these lands continue to be the shared territory of many diverse peoples from near and far.
The University of Regina operates under the terms of The University of Regina Act. Convocation comprises the Chancellor, the Senate, all graduates of the University of Regina, all graduates of the University of Saskatchewan at Regina Campus, and such other classes of persons as the Senate may from time to time determine. Graduates of the University of Saskatchewan, as defined by The University Act, 1968, may become members of Convocation of the University of Regina by notifying the Secretary in writing. Convocation meets twice annually, in June and October, unless there are extraordinary circumstances.
45TH SPRING CONVOCATION 34 UNIVERSITY OF REGINA
The Chancellor is elected by the members of Senate, holds office for three years, presides over Convocation, confers degrees and is ex officio Chair of the Senate and a member of the Board of Governors.
Senate is the University’s “window on the world.” It is concerned with the academic welfare of the institution and has a variety of duties and powers. Most of the broader issues of academic policy within the University are reserved for Senate’s approval. In another role, it acts as an ultimate court in academic affairs. The membership of Senate includes persons, ex officio, or by virtue of the University offices they hold. Convocation elects another fourteen members of Convocation to the Senate. Students registered in the University elect six students of the University to Senate. In addition, any professional society, group or organization in the province that Senate believes contributes in a significant way to the social, economic and cultural welfare of the province may be represented on Senate.
The Board of Governors consists of eleven members and is responsible for overseeing the administrative and business affairs of the University. It ultimately has authority in matters related to the raising and spending of University funds, and the acquisition and management of University property.
Council is the senior legislative body on academic matters. Its membership includes administrative officers, all Deans and directors of academic programs, all members of the teaching staff except sessional lecturers, and a number of student representatives. All matters of substance related to the academic affairs of the University must be considered and approved by the Council, as well as matters of academic discipline.
The Executive of the University of Regina Council (Executive of Council) has been
empowered by Council to act on its behalf in all matters with the provision that requesting a special meeting of Council may challenge a decision of the Executive. Executive of Council membership is devised as a proportional basis of the academic composition of this University.
Disciplines that are related to one another in the broader areas of teaching are, for purposes of administrative and academic planning, brought together into Faculties, of which there are currently ten. Each Faculty is headed by a Dean; formal membership includes the Dean and the teaching members of the various associated disciplines. The Deans are recognized by The University of Regina Act as being the chief executive officers of their respective Faculties and are directly responsible to the President, through the Provost and Vice-President (Academic). Subject to the statutes of the Senate and the University of Regina Council, each Faculty has charge of all matters of scholarship in its disciplines and programs.
