LETTER TO PARENTS

Dear Parents,

It is hard to believe but it is that time of the year again – the beginning of a new

academic year, 1439 – 1440 H / 2018-2019 G. Welcome back! Although you are not part

of the teaching staff, you are just as important to your children’s education as we are.

At Thamer International Schools, your children receive the best education when

you and our dedicated teachers work as a team. It is a parent’s enthusiasm, support

and involvement along with a teacher’s ability to teach what the students need to

learn that inspires children to do their best. Together, we can achieve wonderful

results – a generation prepared for the future.

There is a lot of excitement ahead of us, which includes new teachers to meet, new

books to read, new friends to make and new skills to master…. And we look forward

to sharing with you these exciting moments. The expression, Time Flies, is evident

to us all. One year your child is in 1st Grade and seemingly in the blink of an eye he/

she is in the Middle School, or in the Senior Year of High School for that matter.

In closing, we encourage you to fully embrace the moment and urge you to take the

time from your busy schedule to become familiar with our schools, as well as create

a homework-friendly atmosphere at home that will allow our children to excel.

Thank you for your commitment to your child’s education and we look forward to

seeing you in the very near future.

Yours sincerely,

T. I. S.

SCHOOLS’ DESCRIPTION

Thamer International Schools are private, independent, international, non-discriminative, selective, English-

medium day schools serving both the local and expatriate communities in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. T. I. S. has a

co-educational system from nursery till G3 and segregated one from G4 till G12 the graduation year. It is

operating legally under the supervision of the Ministry of Education under the Boys’ license number 184, and

the Girls license number 4351440097.

T. I. S. was founded in the year 2000 and is managed by its own governing board. Located in Quraysh Street,

built on a 31,000 m2 plot of land, the schools serve as an ideal site for teaching and learning.

T. I. S. facilities include:

• (2) Mosques and Ablution Rooms.

• (6) Specialized Science Laboratories.

• (6) Canteens.

• (2) Fully equipped Gymnasiums.

• (6) Sport Courts.

• (7) Computer Labs.

• (2) Schools’ Clinic.

• (4) Art Rooms.

• (1) Auditorium.

• (3) Libraries.

English is the language of instruction at the schools. All subjects are taught in English except for Qur’an, Islamic

Studies, Arabic, Saudi history and French.

The schools are divided into two distinct schools:

• Primary School:

− Lower Primary School (Pre-K to KG2).

− Upper Primary School (G1 to G3).

• Upper Schools:

− Middle School (G4 to G8).

− Senior School (G9 to G12).

Our staff is well qualified with experience of working with young people in a variety of teaching and learning

situations as well throughout the schools’ systems. Some have recent experience of teaching in Jeddah or

elsewhere, others are new to living and working in the kingdom. This gives us an important mix of experiences

that helps to enrich the educational provision for our students.

The schools’ community incorporates students from all backgrounds whose parents’ main priority is giving

their children the best education they can afford. The growth in our students’ number has been considerable and

we are constantly reviewing our provision to ensure that the students have the best possible learning

opportunities. We are aware of the impact of the class’s size on the student’s learning. Except in special

circumstances, our maximum class size is 25. This is consistent with the situation in comparable with other

private international schools.

The schools’ year is divided into two terms. Report cards are issued at the end of each term. First term begins

in September and ends in December. Second term begins in January and ends in May. The schools’ year overall

consists of 167 teaching days.

ADMISSION GUIDELINES

ADMISSIONS

The admission form must be completed fully and accurately by the student’s parents. All

relevant information must be declared including details of any disciplinary, social, physical,

medical or psychological problems. Copies of relevant medical and educational psychologist’s

reports should be attached to the admission form.

All prospective students wishing to register and enroll at T. I. S. must adhere to the strict

admission policy. It is the schools’ policy to selectively admit any student who completely

fills all the application information along with all necessary documents for registration and

successfully passes the entrance interview and examination. As a prerequisite step for the

interview and placement test, all applications and required documents must be received and

approved by the schools’ Registrar Office. All decisions for admission and placement will be

made strictly through the Schools’ Admission Committee (SAC) which will review the

prospective student’s application, transcripts and report cards over the past three years from

previous schools. The SAC has the right to determine if the student is eligible for the schools’

placement exam. Prospective students must successfully pass the entrance exam and achieve

the demanded level of scores to be considered for placement.

It is the parents’ responsibility to inform the registrar about any special educational needs and

difficulties which their child may have at the time of admission. Students who are suspected

of requiring special educational needs that cannot be provided by the schools may be asked to

provide assessment information from independent professional evaluation centers prior to

making a decision for eligibility for admission and placement testing. Based upon placement

test results, the schools reserves the right to offer various options such as acceptance, denial

of admission or acceptance to a lower level.

Priority for admission will be given to current re-enrolling students. Students requesting to

register after the closing date of general registration will be placed on a first–come–first-serve

basis.

Once classes are full, prospective applicants will be placed on a waiting list, which does not

guarantee placement.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

PARENTS’ ACCESS TO SCHOOLS

In order to ensure the security of the schools’ campus, we have limited the access of parents and

visitors during instructional time. Our main gates are manned by uniformed guards 24 hours a day.

All parents must put the schools’ sticker on the upper right side of the windshield of the car.

Upon entering the schools all parents must present their car sticker to the security guards. They are

kindly requested to park near the front entrance gate of the Boys’ or Girls’ Reception in the guest

parking. Parents will then proceed to the Receptionist who will contact the staff member about the

appointment taken beforehand. Parents must remain in the Reception area until a staff member

arrives to escort them onto the campus ground.

[ 12 ]

Page 17: Thamer International Schools€¦ · At Thamer International Schools, your children receive the best education when you and our dedicated teachers work as a team. It is a parent’s

ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL POLICY

We have a strict policy related to the arrival to schools and dismissal of students. This applies to the

normal schools’ day and any other time that students are in the schools’ care, e.g. special events (inside

or outside the schools) and sports events outside the schools.

• It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to ensure that their children arrive on time and are

collected on time. The schools will not be responsible for students who are half an hour late after

the assigned dismissal times. In cases of emergency where parents are going to be late in collecting

their children, the schools have to be notified and late children will be assigned to designated

waiting areas.

• Parents are asked to provide the schools’ administration of details and contact numbers of all

persons who are going to bring or collect their children from the schools. It is the responsibility of

the parent to keep this information up to date.

• The schools will only allow the person, whose name is registered in our files, to collect your child

unless you give prior written permission for another one to do so.

• Late students in the girls section (after 3:00 p.m.) must be collected at gate 8 since the other gates

will be closed.

• Late students in the boys section (after 3:00 p.m.) must be collected at gate 12 since the other gates

will be closed.

• The schools do not allow students to be taken from classes early unless they have a valid reason.

In such case, we ask the parents to provide a relevant documentation to verify the reason of the

leave. Parents who wish to pick up their children earlier need to pass by the reception for an Early

Dismissal Permission Slip to be presented to the floor supervisor.

• Primary School students need to be collected from the designated gates. Mothers or nannies will

not be allowed into the Primary School buildings. Fathers or drivers are not allowed into the

building as required by the Ministry of Education and need to wait for the students at the

designated gates. These students will be called upon by microphone and will be escorted out to

the gate to be collected.

• Upper School students will leave alone at dismissal time. No parents, drivers, or nannies will be

allowed into the buildings at that time.

[ 13 ]

Page 18: Thamer International Schools€¦ · At Thamer International Schools, your children receive the best education when you and our dedicated teachers work as a team. It is a parent’s

ATTENDANCE AND LATENESS POLICY

ATTENDANCE:

T. I. S. puts a high priority on student attendance. It is important for students to be in the schools in a

consistent routine of study and participation in the schools’ activities. This is the best way to build a

strong academic record and to establish the reputation of involvement and responsibility.

Students who are absent for more than two consecutive days, must bring a written excuse from a

parent or guardian upon their return to the schools. Students give these excuses to their Head of School

so that the letter is kept in their file. In all cases, parents will be contacted by supervisors when their

children are absent to check out of the reason for their absence and to arrange a way to send their

agenda if applicable. If the absence occurs repeatedly with no valid reason that is accepted by the

administration, disciplinary action will be taken against the student.

Students

Each student is expected to put his/her best effort into every task he/she attempts. Students are

expected to participate in all schools/class activities. In terms of academic requirement, students are

expected to complete all tasks and sit for all examinations. They are responsible for completing work

that was missed as a result of a partial or whole day absence.

Parents

Parents are responsible for:

• Ensuring that their children attend the schools regularly.

• Ensuring that their children arrive at the schools before lessons commence and they are ready to

learn (with all necessary items).

• Explaining the absences of their children from the schools.

• Taking measures to resolve attendance issues involving their children.

Parents are asked to make holiday travel arrangements which ensure that their children not only attend

each schools’ day, but also are rested and ready to learn upon their return.

T. I. S. does not support the practice of parents arranging holidays for their children that result

in their absence from the schools. At least 90% attendance throughout the schools’ year is

obligatory. The satisfactory completion of a term's academic work requires regular attendance to

classes. Making up written work is only a partial substitution for class attendance. A well-planned

class provides a learning opportunity for the students every day. If a student is absent, he/she is losing

educational benefits, and it is impossible to make up for the missed experience and to gain from this

learning experience to the same degree that the student would through the group involvement in the

regular class. Participation in class activities cannot be made up. Furthermore, the absence of any

student affects not only his/her progress, but also negatively impacts the process of the group.

[ 14 ]

Page 19: Thamer International Schools€¦ · At Thamer International Schools, your children receive the best education when you and our dedicated teachers work as a team. It is a parent’s

Attendance Procedure

1. It is expected that the students will attend classes on a daily basis. All Form Tutors will take roll

and keep a record of absences and tardiness.

2. An absence includes the following: illness, doctor visits, travel, extended vacations, etc.

3. Primary and middle school students who are absent for more than 16 school days during an

academic year will be asked to withdraw from the schools the coming academic year.

4. If a senior school student’s absence exceeds 10 classes of the time allocated to a subject per term,

the student and the parent will be notified that the student is placed on an "Academic Probation"

period. If the student meets the following requirements, while on probation, he/she can maintain

the grade:

• Attendance must be excellent.

• Punctuality must be excellent.

• Demonstrate commitment to the academic work.

• Demonstrate cooperation with the teachers.

5. A student and his/her parents should work closely with the teachers or supervisors to ensure that

any missed work due to an absence is made up as soon as possible. Students are responsible for

making up any missed work.

6. Merit Marks will be affected by the students’ absence as follows for grades 1 – 3

Prior Arrangements/Early Leave:

T. I. S. strongly discourages students of taking extended vacations during a term or leaving the schools prior

to the normal closing date. (Students missing classes lose essential instructions and place increased demands

on classroom teachers in the areas of record-keeping, administering make-up work, etc). During the process

of planning for an extended absence, parents and students should understand that teachers cannot possibly, in

all cases, re-teach the lesson nor provide make-up assignments to cover all the materials that were missed.

Since a student presumably needs to attend the full term to receive proper learning, it is reasonable to expect

that the extended absences will usually result in a lower grade. However, occasions may arise where an

extended absence is necessary. When this is the case, the schools will make every reasonable attempt to

reduce the damage to student's educational program.

LATENESS:

Students arriving late (between 7:50 am and 8:00 am) will stay outside the class during the form tutor

session and their merit marks will be affected ((every 4 late arrivals will be equivalent to 1 day of

absence)). Students arriving later than 8:05 am will miss the first instructional period.

• All students who are late for any period must have their names registered by the teachers on the

disciplinary sheet.

• Student is considered late if he/she enters the room after the class has begun but within the first 5

minutes. Students arriving after 10 minutes will be recorded as absent. Teachers are not allowed

to admit late students if they missed more than 10 minutes of the period.

• Continued tardiness will result in office referrals with increasingly severe consequences.

• If a student arrives late to the schools more than once a week, the parents will be contacted. If the

student is late on a regular basis, the parents will be asked to attend a meeting with the Head of

ACADEMICS

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

T. I. S. offers a broad, thorough academic curricula, supported by co-curricular and extra-curricular

programs to develop holistic learners. Students from Pre-K till G12 are taught international curricula.

The curriculum of the Primary School encompasses the core areas of Language Arts, Math, Science,

Islamic Studies and Social Studies along with the special areas of Information Technology, Physical

Education and Art. Also, we offer Arabic as well as Special Arabic for non-Arabs.

The curriculum of the Upper Schools includes: English, Math, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Arabic,

French, and Information Technology. In addition, other selective courses are offered to Senior Schools

students such as: Business, Accounting, History and Psychology.

THE IGCSE AND THE GCE ADVANCED LEVEL PROGRAMS

The IGCSE and the GCE Advanced Level have an international credibility as an educational

qualification and are widely accepted as prestigious university entrance qualifications.

T. I. S. offers these programs, whose examinations are conducted by Cambridge Local Examination

Syndicate in Great Britain. These courses are taken by students in Grades, Ten, Eleven and Twelve.

IGCSE

Grades Eight and Nine are preparatory years for the IGCSE Examinations which commence in Grade

Ten. In grade nine, students must take the following subjects:

English as a 2nd Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Information Technology,

Business Studies, Accounting, and Arabic as a 1st Language. In Grade Ten, students may choose

between six and eight of the above mentioned subjects to sit for the May/June examinations sessions

at the end of the academic year.

[ 19 ]

A Level

A maximum of five subjects can be taken in Grade Eleven at the AS Level, and these chosen subjects

are to be continued in Grade Twelve for A2 to complete the GCE Advanced Level requirements. The

schools offer the following subjects at the GCE Advanced Level of the University of Cambridge Local

Examination Syndicate: Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Information Technology,

Accounting and Business Studies. Students should strive to maintain at least a C grade in their IGCSEs.

If not, they won’t be able to complete the AS courses and are advised to retake the desired subjects in

the November session.

All students can sit for SAT 1 Examinations at the end of Grade Eleven if they desire. Transcripts will

be given to all grade 12 students.

N. B. Since the university requirements are different from one country to another, the schools do its best

to cater for all students. Hence the students can study up to eight IGCSE level subjects and five A Level

subjects throughout a period of three years.

REPORT CARDS

Every academic year is divided into 2 terms which amounts to 36 teaching weeks including

examination weeks.

Students sit for their weekly exams on a weekly basis. Exams are corrected by teachers and returned

to students within a maximum period of 72 hours. Parents are requested to monitor these weekly

exams. In case their children do not show these exams, it is the responsibility of the parents to call the

concerned Head of School and check the exams’ results. The schools are not held responsible if the

students do not show these exams to their parents. Parents will be contacted only if their child

received a grade below the (60/100).

Report cards are issued twice during an academic year at the end of each term. However, parents can

access their children’s academic and discipline records any time during the year with the concerned

Head of School.

A student's report card is an important record of their accomplishments and progress. As a result, it is

extremely important that parents not only receive these report cards, but review them with their

children. Students who have pending financial issues will not receive their report cards until the

balance is fully paid.

Parents of students who are under achieving academically may receive notification via academic

warnings sent home with students to be signed by parents and returned back to the schools. Parents

and teachers may deem it necessary to schedule conferences to further discuss the student’s progress.

GRADING SYSTEM

Lower Primary School: Students will be promoted from one grade to another after passing the exam. No students will be

retained in the lower primary school.

ACADEMIC PROBATION

"Academic Probation" is a temporary status for a period of at least nine weeks and is incurred by the

student on his or her most recent term report card. Academic probation is reviewed with each term

report card. Placement on Academic Probation will result in the immediate development of an

Academic Improvement Plan. Academic Probation can occur at the end of one schools’ year for the

first reporting period of the following schools’ year. A team meeting is to occur between the teachers,

child, and parents to establish a proactive plan for the student to be successful.

Lower Primary School:

No student will be placed on an academic probation unless there is a valid reason.

Upper Primary School:

• Grades 1 & 2:

If the student gets less than 60/100 overall average in term 1, then he/she is placed on an academic probation.

• Grade 3:

If the student gets less than 60/100 in two or more core subjects, then he/she is placed on an academic probation.

Upper School (Middle and Senior)

• Grades 4 -12:

If the student gets less than 60/100 in two or more core subjects in term 1, then he/she is placed on an academic

probation regardless of the overall average of the student.

HOMEWORK POLICY

Overview

It is our belief at Thamer International Schools that homework forms an integral part of teaching and learning,

and that if used effectively, homework is a valuable teaching aid.

Purpose

The emphasis of homework should be placed on the value of the assignment for the student, rather than on the

time allotment needed for its completion. The purpose of a homework assignment may be to:

1. Strengthen basic skills.

2. Extend and reinforce classroom instruction.

3. Stimulate and further interests.

4. Develop initiative, self-direction and organizational skills.

Guidelines

Homework assignments must be planned carefully in accordance with the following guiding principles:

1. The purpose of the assignment and its relation to what has been taught in the classroom must be understood

by the students.

2. Students should fully understand what to do, how to do it, and when it is due.

3. Homework should grow from classroom tasks, projects and concerns.

4. The total daily homework is considered when deciding the length of any assignment. Time allotments

should be about:

• KG2 30 minutes daily

• Grade 1& 2 45 minutes daily

• Grade 3 60 minutes daily

• Grade 4 – 7 90 minutes daily

• Grade 8 – 12 120 minutes daily

5. Students must use their homework agendas to record their homework assignments starting Grade 3.

6. Agendas for Preschools to Grade 12 will be planned and placed on the schools' website every Thursday.

Class work agendas will inform you about the material and lessons your child will acquire during each

coming week. The homework weekly agenda is divided into cells indicating the different assignments you

need to work with your child over the days of the week.

• What is bullying?

Bullying is an act of aggression that causes embarrassment, pain or discomfort to others. It usually involves

an abuse of or an imbalance of power. Individuals or groups may be involved.

Bullying can take many forms, all of which will cause distress, and are the most common form of violence

experienced by young people at the schools.

Bullying may be:

➢ Physical: hitting, pushing, tripping, spitting on others, etc.

➢ Verbal: teasing using offensive names, ridiculing, spreading rumors, etc.

➢ Non-verbal: writing offensive notes or graffiti about others, rude gestures, etc.

➢ Extortion: threatening to take someone’s possessions, food or money.

➢ Property: stealing, hiding, damaging or destroying others’ property.

• What is plagiarism?

Plagiarism is using or taking credit for other people’s words or ideas as your own. This can be avoided in

some situations by simply crediting a person as in the case of a research paper in which you may reveal a

source in a citation. Even if you revise, rearrange, or paraphrase you must give credit instead of pretending

the words are your own.

Examples of plagiarism: Buying or using part of or all of a paper that was not written by you; copying and

pasting from one or more source to create a paper; using passages or ideas from another sources as your

own; paraphrasing ideas without giving credit; putting quotation marks around only some of the words

taken from a source; copying exact words without quotation marks; giving a fake citation.

DISCIPLINARY PROBATION

• A student will be placed on disciplinary probation upon recommendation from the concerned disciplinary

committee in each of the schools (i.e. Schools’ Director, Head of School, Supervisor, and class teacher) as

per the discipline chain mentioned above.

• Probation will be removed at the end of the term if the student shows substantial and consistent evidence of

progress in behavior and attitude.

• Students on disciplinary probation will be denied participation in certain major schools’ activities and trips.

• No student will be allowed to continue his/her enrollment at T. I. S. if he/she is still placed on

disciplinary probation at the end of an academic year.

REWARDING GOOD BEHAVIOR

As an inappropriate behavior has consequences, good behavior, on the other hand, is rewarded at T. I. S.

Good behavior may be rewarded by certificates awarded during the morning assemblies or by extra student

merit points added on the report card.

To reinforce appropriate behavior in social and learning situations, parents are encouraged to:

• Encourage students to reflect on their behavior.

• Provide opportunities to discuss conduct and behavior.

• Provide opportunities to self-correct inappropriate behavior.

SCHOOLS SERVICES

SCHOOLS’ CANTEENS

In collaboration T. I. S. canteens work with the schools to provide nutritious meals for our students.

Therefore, only healthy choices are available in our canteens. Sodas, chewing gum, chocolate, candy,

sweets, and fried food are not sold to students. It is important that families also discuss and promote

healthy choices and balanced eating habits.

Schools’ canteens are opened from 7:30-8:00 a.m. and during break times only.

Students are not allowed to purchase any food or water from the canteen during class time, including

P.E. and Gym sessions.

Teachers on duty will line up students and avoid congestion during break times. Selling food will stop

5 minutes before break dismissal time.

If parents choose to send food with their children, please provide them with healthy food in a suitable

container marked with their name. Sodas, chewing gum, chocolate, candy, sweets, and fried food

are not allowed. Also provide healthy drinks in containers other than glass, which can be dangerous.

Students don’t have to leave their classes to drink water, as they are allowed to drink water inside their

classes and during lessons. Therefore, please make sure that they have plastic bottled water.

SCHOOLS’ CLINIC

A full- time schools’ doctor and a schools’ nurse run the schools’ clinic. Their work focuses on

preventive, curative and educative matters.

• The preventive aspect involves keeping and updating a file for each student. Parents are required to

fill a health status update at the start of each school year.

• The curative aspect involves taking care of illness and accidents: Sick students are reported to the

clinic for treatment. The nurse checks the files for allergies etc. before deciding on appropriate care.

If the student is sick and needs further treatment, the parents are contacted immediately for further

measures. In case of a minor accident, the parents are notified either on the phone and or by a memo

describing what happened and the measures taken. Major accidents that require hospitalization

are dealt with depending on the seriousness of the situation. Parents are notified at once and

asked to accompany their child to the hospital for treatment. If the accident is severe that the student

requires immediate hospitalization, T. I. S. personnel will accompany student to the hospital and

the parents are asked to meet them there.

• Besides the preventive and curative measures, the clinic offers an educative aspect. Both, the doctor

and the nurses are involved in class visitations, assemblies on hygiene, health issues etc. and on

disseminating information on current health practices.

COUNSELING SERVICES

T. I. S. Social Workers are dedicated to providing academic, social, emotional guidance and counseling services

to our students and their families. In addition, comprehensive college and career development counseling is

provided to our High Schools students. Our goal is to assist in the development of the whole child, so that our

students can effectively meet the academic, social and emotional challenges that they are faced with every day.

The counseling process may include:

• Formal and informal observations.

• Formal and informal interviews with students, parents and teachers.

• Child Study Team Meetings.

• Assessment at T. I. S.

• Recommendation and referral for outsourced assessment.

Students may be referred to the Social Worker by teachers, parents, administration and other schools’

personnel, or they may come to see the Social Worker on their own. Upon referral, the Social Worker

will assess the needs of the student and take whatever action is deemed necessary. Social Workers

may organize and facilitate Child Study Team meetings and will coordinate follow-up on any

recommended action.

The Social Worker may contact parents to request their involvement in the process and/or inform them

of the action being taken to meet their child’s needs. If further measurement is needed or assessment

is determined, a recommendation will be discussed with parents and the Social Worker will prepare

the necessary documentation for referral.
