WHY THE ART CENTER MATTERS NOWNow more than ever, the Art Center matters—to our exhibition visitors, to the K-5 students from around the region who participate in our Project Look and Cultural Kaleidoscope programs, to our volunteers and interns, our studio participants, the children who participate in our classes and summer camps, and the people from around the country and world who engage with our virtual programs. Due to COVID-19, this was the Art Center’s most challenging year yet. But we are fueled by the need for art in our community and are working diligently to provide the programs we can, in novel and distributed ways.

Thank you to the Palo Alto Art Center Foundation members, donors, and supporters for making our work possible.

Safety FirstThe Palo Alto Art Center is committed to the safety of our visitors, program participants, volunteers, interns, and staff. We continue to closely monitor state and county guidelines, and have updated our facility with additional signage, floor vinyl, enhanced ventilation, and new restroom protocols.

“I was wowed over this exhibit. I think it’s one of the best ones yet!” —Rooted: Trees in Contemporary Art visitor

“Loved being able to take an Art Center class from Connecticut.”

87% of Art Center volunteers plan to continue volunteering.

The Art Center hosted eight interns and one fellow in summer 2019 and two fellows in fall 2019. All were paid.

Both the Art Center and the Junior Museum and Zoo (our partner in the IMLS-funded Working Together initiative) increased the ethnic diversity of their staffs through paid teen opportunities and internships. Between both sites, the percentage of non-white staff increased from 17% to 28%.

The Art Center’s Children’s Fine Art program offered 159 classes and camps to 2,210 participants, along with two Family Days that engaged 961 people.

The Art Center organized 30 Collaboration Days, providing opportunities for students to practice communication skills and collaborate on creative endeavors with their buddies.

Highlights from CK evaluations included:CK improves the achievement gap in 21st-century skills between districts, and 76% of teachers reported more desire to, or confidence in, integrating more art into their curriculum and lesson plans.

In December 2019, the fourth annual Jewelry and Ceramics Holiday Sale had its most successful sale to date!

In response to COVID-19, Adult Studios launched a successful wheel rental and curbside firing and glazing program to engage our audiences.

The Art Center Teen Leadership group currently has 17 active members.

Teen-only events engaged 137 teens this past year.

279 teens participated in fine art classes, workshops, and camps in ceramics, digital photography, drawing and painting, and jewelry and metalworking.

114 teens volunteered in our counselor-in-training summer program, at Family Days, and middle and high school service days.

“I wanted to emphasize how impressed our family was at how the ceramics camp was planned and executed during the middle of a pandemic. We felt like our daughter was always safe.”

Exhibitions promoted dialogue and inspired creativity and learning for more than 12,000 people this fiscal year.

Volunteers contributed 4,353 hours, a value of $120,164 in donated time this fiscal year.

Project Look engaged 3,933 students, teachers and chaperones in 176 school tours this fiscal year!

Teachers report their Art Center experience allowed their students to practice creativity (100%), communication (92%), critical thinking (96%), and collaboration (58%).

“I’ve had wonderful moments with school groups where it felt as if we were a smoothly honed “art appreciation” team. Working together, having fun, and being creative in our exploration.” – Project Look Docent

Cultural Kaleidoscope engaged 397 students in 20 classrooms in the Ravenswood City School District and the Palo Alto Unified School District from kindergarten to fifth grade.

Adult Studios class enrollment started strong in summer 2019, fall 2020 and winter 2020, engaging 1,218 students

More than 500 teens participated in Art Center activities, events, and classes.

The Art Center established free and paid virtual programming to engage the community and keep our contractors and employee instructors working during our facility closure. This focus on virtual content has built staff and contractor capacity in this area, creating opportunities for future virtual programming to complement onsite programming when we reopen. Recorded virtual programs have close to 5,000 views on YouTube. Virtual classes have engaged close to 500 participants.
