WHO WE ARE
The John Wesley Community Centre (JWCC) is a registered Non-profit and Public Benefit Organisation
that offers numerous activities that caters for the needs of the surrounding district of Etwatwa. As HIV/
AIDS, poverty and gender inequality is so prominent in today’s society the Centres main purpose is to
care for those infected and affected by the disease, abuse and uninformed especially children.
These children are classified as vulnerable children as they mostly live in impoverished areas and are
either orphaned or are directly affected by HIV/AIDS, poverty or inequality. The heart of the John Wesley
Community Centre is the HIV/ÁIDS Orphans Project and this underlies almost all of our planning and
activities. The vulnerable children are a priority and we have developed many programmes in hope to
empower them, such as a pre-school, an after-school care agenda and educational and cultural activities.
The centre also acts as a network amongst community civilians and the police, the local hospitals, local
social services (such as counselling facilities) and governmental administrational duties (such as
obtaining ID’s).
WHERE WE ARE
The John Wesley Community Centre is situated amidst the impoverished area of Daveyton and Etwatwa.
The physical address is: 11370 Church Street, Etwatwa West.
WHAT WE DO FOR CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES
We offer children of all ages well structured and comprehensive programs in line with good educational
principles, taking into account the abilities and needs of the Community as a whole.
Pre School children from 1 to 6 years of age are under the care of qualified Care Givers and a senior
teacher. Some 258 youngsters receive classes and graded daily activities are planned to cater for the
many needs of the children. The children receive two healthy meals a day, which are planned to provide
good basic nutrition and are varied from day to day. They also receive basic computer instruction
according to their age and abilities in our computer training centre and marimba music lessons which
sharpens their minds and really gets their energy levels up. Participative action ensures all-round
development in a safe and protected environment.
After Care children are catered for once day school is completed and starts with a nutritious lunch
before the planned activities commence. Our team of Care Givers ensures adequate control so that
maximum benefit is obtained by the participants. Help is given with home work and the library caters for
reading and linguistic needs. Basic personal care and hygiene receive attention. Children may participate
in a range of activities which include trampoline and gymnastics, cultural dancing, Art classes, Chess
Club, Spell IT, extra Maths lessons, Marimba Club, Literacy and Reading classes, computer training, ball
games, to name a few. We have run a Saturday School for grade 8 – grade 12’s to give a structured
maths and English literacy programme to assist in their studies at school. It also offers a safe place to be
off the streets away from the gangs and a plan to learn not only in the classroom, but also in life through
career days, educational trips and so as per funding.
Saturday School provides Grade 8 to Grade 11 students with additional English comprehension and
Maths lessons aimed at improving their school results with a view to give them opportunities to access
bursaries, sponsorships and learnerships once they matriculate.

Social Work is carried out by our team of Social Auxiliary Workers who assist in routine matters such as
obtaining ID documents, Birth Certificates and social grants, as well as interventions in domestic issues in
the wider families, child abuse, and inadequate basic home circumstances. Many home visits are
conducted to offer assistance in times of difficulties and food parcels and clothing are supplied to those in
need. There is also specific counselling and a support group to assist with the trauma of those infected
and affected by HIV/AIDS.
Computer Training is offered to the children, school leavers and adults in our Computer Training and
Education Centre. We continue to develop and incorporate Life Skills training and are developing an
Entrepreneur Development program.
HIV/AIDS Awareness and Home Based Care Training is offered; each course runs for 12 weeks and
deals with a wide range of practical issues which enable the adult community members who attend to be
better equipped in dealing with this disease and the life style changes required within their own areas.
Creative drama productions are performed in the local schools to increase awareness and educate the
children about the disease.
Gender Awareness and Human Rights as well as basic Life Skills is also a part of this programme
rounding the course out to give all participants a clearer understanding of all the relevant issues at hand
and allowing them to find out how to go about dealing with such situations which directly impact them or
their families.
Home Based Care work is handled by a team of Care Givers who go into the homes with practical help
for those who for whatever reason are unable to fully cope with their situation. Special care is given to
those whose physical condition is compromised in order to restore a sense of dignity and meaning in the
circumstances in which they find themselves.
Pastoral Care workers often accompany the home visitors to assist those who have expressed a desire
for assistance on a deeper level. The centre soaks itself in training and educational programmes. The
interaction with community members allows people to be given appropriate and sensitive support.
WHAT WE DO FOR THE COMMUNITY
Facilities for community employment creation projects are made available to individuals from the local
community (primarily women) who desire to run self-help projects such as the manufacture of textile
products, corporate gifts, decorative beads, embroidery, etc. We provide premises through our Enterprise
Development project.
Through our Enterprise Development Project (for which companies can earn BEE points for their
contributions) we currently support three projects with funding, training and business coaching. We have
launched a very well structured entrepreneur development training program called Paradigm Shift and a
basic entry level workplace skills programme to assist those trying to find work but who have no idea what
to expect in an interview or from an employer. The programme is called Work 4 a Living.

Ground and water is made available for community vegetable gardening projects and we assist with
training and seeds. Community Support Groups provide encouragement for those who are feeling let
down by life. We act as a network amongst community members, linking closely with the Police, with
Schools in the area, with clinics and with other projects, training institutions and social welfare
organisations such as the Red Cross and Child Welfare, as well as with representatives of Governmental
organisations and structures. We also support and facilitate community training workshops and
forums. We also get involved in a number of outreach initiatives.
MONITORING AND EVALUATION
We have a highly credible financial department in place. A projected cash flow analysis for a rolling
twelve month period is performed on a monthly basis to identify funding needs and highlight financial
issues so that they can be timeously addressed. Budgets are prepared and monitored against actual
results on a monthly basis. Monthly statistical reports are also provided to the Department of Social
Development. Finances and project progress are discussed at quarterly executive meetings. Audited
annual financial statements are produced and presented at the AGM. Operational monitoring of the
different programs and evaluation of staff performance and accountability are reviewed and assessed
at weekly team and monthly management meetings. Ongoing staff training in all relevant aspects is also
provided.
CONCLUSION
We believe that each child deserves to be loved, cared for and directed towards the best possible life
style commensurate with life within the family unit and the Community as a whole. To this end we
deliberately offer a range of activities geared towards the holistic development of each child, which will
lead to ultimate empowerment with the best chance of gaining victory in the upward battle for a better life.
Combined with the right guidance, training and care we are committed to developing the extraordinary in
each one of the children with whom we work.
