The Lake County Haven provides

food, safety, shelter, counseling, and

life-skills training to women and

children who are trying to find a path

out of homelessness. Each and every

day, our residents work to rebuild

their lives. For many, it is a constant,

uphill struggle. Here is...

One Woman’s Journey.

A Bump in the Road

For more than half of her 32 years, Cheryl has struggled with alcoholism. For seventeen years, the only solace

she could find came to her while drinking. She struggled to feel “normal” and to make good choices:

“each decision I made seemed to pull me down lower and lower to the point that I felt hopeless and alone.”

Stopping for Directions

Earlier this year, Cheryl achieved

sobriety with the help of 12-Step

meetings. But it wasn’t until she was accepted at the Lake County Haven

that she felt she had achieved recovery, sanity, and safety. At the

Haven, Cheryl has realized that her recovery from addiction and homelessness is an ongoing process of hard work and self-management.

“The group atmosphere and camaraderie I experience at the Haven is like no other. The sessions provided in the house have impacted me in

such positive ways that I am now able to hold a job that I enjoy, attend college part-time, and communicate effectively with my peers.”

The Road Ahead

Cheryl knows that she still has much work to do in order to become independent. But thanks to the skills she has been practicing in the Haven’s

Day Program, for the first time in a long time, she has a bright outlook on her future. “I look forward to each and every day as an opportunity to share

my experience, strength, and hope with others, that they might find the peace I have found through the Lake County Haven.”
