BOOM is a statewide award ceremony recognizing individuals with a disability who have excelled professionally or personally.

Each year, three individuals are honored as the Employee of the Year, Entrepreneur of the Year and Athlete of the Year.

The goal of the BOOM Awards is to provide stereotype-busting role models for people with disabilities. Great inspiration comes from people who have done it and done it well – that’s who we’re celebrating.

Nominees are residents of the state of Michigan and have demonstrated excellence over an extended period of time.

The Employee of the Year is someone who has made a significant contribution at their place of employment. This person has displayed promptness, initiative and drive in the performance of their job duties with their current employer.

The Entrepreneur of the Year is someone who has persevered to start and run a successful business, for a minimum of one year. This person has displayed determination, inventiveness and tenacity as a business owner.

The Athlete of the Year is someone who competes and excels in a team or individual sport. This person has displayed a high level of skill, continuous improvement and excellent performance in a series of venues or competitions.

apex – Lifetime Achievement – recognizes an individual who has forged an absolutely stellar and impactful career, building a resume of significant accomplishment on behalf of the people we serve. This individual hasan extended history of distinguished service, and has made a lasting contribution to enhancing the quality of life for Michigan’s citizens with disabilities and other barriers to community access - above and beyond - over a sustained period of time.

2019 Award Recipient:Mitch Tomlinson

Lifetime Achievement

Harry Smith IMPACT ScholarshipIn June 2010, the rehabilitation community lost a passionate advocate and visionary with the passing of Michigan’s own Harry R. Smith. Harry was a Past-President of MRA and NRA. He will be remembered for his extraordinary career accomplishments, exhaustive professional service contributions (at the local, state, and national levels), and the significant,long-term impact he had on the lives of citizens with disabilities, and professionals for more than 35 years. It is Harry’s character that stands out above all. He can be defined by an insatiable search for truth, fairness, and humanity within our rehabilitationservice delivery system, and a desire for all rehabilitation professionals to continuously review and enhance the laws and public policy that guide and inspire us to positively impact the lives of persons with disabilities. Harry was committed to learning new and innovative techniques for service delivery, discussing opportunities for policy change, and re-engaging our advocacy efforts. It is with this scholarship award that we strive to inspire others tocontinue in the spirit of Harry’s legacy.
