• Keep members and community informed and involved
• Newsletters – printed, email, online distribution
• Media – radio, email, papers…..
• Online presence is more critical now
• Websites, plus social media
Why consider social media?
It’s where many people choose to interact:
• About 90% of Australian population online
• 11.5 million Aus accounts on Facebook *
• 11.25 million Aus users on YouTube *
• 2.2 million Aus users on Twitter
• *2013 Australian population ~ 23 million
How else can online media help?
• 90% of users search for information online
• No distance or boundary issues online
• Journalists are major Twitter users
• Younger demographic are major users
Benefits of social media• Can connect to the missing age groups
• Sharing information works - ripples– Share– Reshare– Retweet
Benefits of Social Media• Great systems to raise group profile
• Can get feedback, questions
What has Landcare learnt?
• Landcare is about connecting with people, not selling stuff
• It is NOT a failure to have few followers
• Quality can be better than quantity
• Be honest
• Be prepared for slow uptake – it’s OK
Things to Consider
• Need to ask ‘How will this help our group?’
• Useful tools but only part of the toolkit
• Social Media will not connect to all community
• ≠ participation in Group

• Purposefully - be ever mindful of your strategy• Brand the group, issue or person with the @handle and profile• Complete the profile: NO PIC = NO FOLLOWERS• Use reports, blocks, etc.. • Link Twitter feed to Facebook and website for impact• #AgChatOz #Landcare
• Engaging using Twitter creates connections otherwise impossible• Build your profile and relationships to attract funding, volunteers and partners• 2-way communication about projects, events and activities and ideas• Follow your followers’ followers • Keep in contact with a group to motivate and reward participants
• Start off steady – Watch, RT and then Tweet• Check in regularly. MAINTAIN your relationships• RT to share and acknowledge other’s info• DM to improve connections with followers• People get to know each other over time• Facebook, LinkedIn & Website feeds• Shorten URL’s

Reasons• Umbrella organisation• Platform for community members to interact with • Landcare Illawarra was created before pages• Post events/workshops• Interact with individuals
Benefits• Able to support other groups to set up pages and
act as an admin• Able to tag individuals and other groups to help
promote them and answer enquiries, create social inclusion in photo tagging, etc..

Limitations• People have to request to be a friend instead of
just liking• No statistics on visitation or interaction with a

Limitations• There are tagging limitations• Not everyone is on Facebook

more private discussions and resources• Can filter who is allowed in the group
