Thats What Ygritte SaidWeekly Game of Thrones Musings by Sam Ryu

With two full Game of Thronesseasons under our belts, we start to notice some structural patterns inthe way this show reveals its story (small sample size, I know). Episode 1 and 2 are usually spentsetting the stage for the seasonintroducing new characters, explaining backgrounds, placing themajor players on the chessboard (i.e. exposition). We see these pieces slowly start to move towardtheir respective goals in Episodes 3~5, and things escalate in Episodes 6~8 (i.e. rising action). ThenEpisode 9 happensthe climax. This is usually the monumental event, which has consequencesthat reverberate throughout the Seven Kingdoms and beyond. (In Episode 9 of Season 1: Nedloses his head. In Episode 9 of Season 2: the spectacular Battle of Blackwater.) And finally we get

the denouement in Episode 10, when loose ends are tied as much as possible and we get a hint ofwhere its all headed next season. This sounds like a pretty bland breakdown of this shows episodicstructure within a typical season, but its all to highlight one big point...

Season 3, Episode 4 And Now His Watch is Ended

Just so were all on the same page here, we got that last scene with Daenerys in freaking Episode 4of this season. WHAT? I dont even want to think about whats coming the rest of this season, let

alone in Episode 9my brain cant handle it. For a point of comparison, the biggest thing thathappened in Season 1, Episode 4 was the erroneous arrest of Tyrion Lannister at the inn byCatelyn Stark, and in Season 2, Episode 4 we got the birth of the shadow demon babybothimportant and exciting events in their own right, but (in the words of Gob Bluth) COME ON!

Alright. Ill stop gushing about how great that last scene was and get on with the rest of theepisode. This week is comparativelylight on hidden messages and conspiracy theories, but we got

Westeros Fashion Week (wearing your hand as a necklace is trs chic), eunuch origin stories, Tywincontinuing to make a strong case for Father of the Year, BFF courtships, black backstabbings, and,of course, the Mother of Dragons doing Mother-of-Dragons-type things.

Already, we see aglimpse of the new LeftHand Jaime in action. Ireferenced several hintslast weekthat alluded to

    Jaime reinventinghimself and learning to

wield a sword with hisnot-cut-off hand.Given his mental andphysical condition, hesnot too shabby already.

    This is goingsomewhere, folks.

Breaking News: Speculation of Podricks aptitude for women-pleasuring has been confirmed, sources say. We are still unsure of how or why, but our sources did verify that Podrick (Tyrionssquire) is, in fact, really great in the sack. Stay tuned for any updates.

Anyone that can get the eternally petulant KingJoffrey to do the royal hand wave knows whathe or she is doing. And as much crap asGrandma Olenna Tyrell gives the completelyridiculous, non-intimidating nature of House

Tyrells sigil and motto*, the Tyrells have shown

that they are the most politically savvy house inthe Seven Kingdoms. In addition to seamlesslypositioning themselves with the strongestforces (at first with Renly, now with Joffrey),their ability to maneuver out of difficult situation with such eloquent words is really impressiveMargaery, especially. She danced around the whole I know you love men, but I really need to haveyour baby to be queen thing without insulting Renly, while completely dismissing Littlefingersallegations of the same nature. She also uses the fact that she was married to the man (RenlyBaratheon) that tried to overthrow Joffrey, as a way to manipulate and seduce the boy king. As

Cersei mentions, Margaery might be the only one who knows how to control Joffrey.

    * Growing Strong. Ha! The dullest words of any house. [...] A golden rose growing strong? That strikes fear inthe heart.

The guy who rescues Theon then takes him back to his captors, we learn, was not sent by SisterGreyjoy. This explains why he tells Theon that Winter is Coming when he saves him in the

woods (Season 3, Episode 3). As suggested in a previous newsletter, Theons captors are of HouseBolton in the Northsworn to House Stark, but up to shady things.

We see the continueddisintegration of structure andthe code of honor in the mutinyat Crasters Keep. Jeor Mormont,Lord Commander of the Nights

Watch, is killed by his ownhungry, selfish men. Although heturned a blind eye to Crastersmale baby sacrifices to the White

Walkers, Lord CommanderMormont was an honorable man(the latest in a streak of dead buthonorable men). Also, keep in

mind that Lord Commander Jeor Mormonts son is Jorah Mormontone of Daenerys twocurrent advisors. See the resemblance?

Quick History Lesson:Jorah Mormont is an exiledknight and the former Lord of House Mormonta

vassal of House Stark. (His dad Jeor is in the NightsWatch, and therefore can own no lands.) After beingcaught selling slaves (which is illegal in the SevenKingdoms), Ser Jorah was stripped of his titles andsentenced to death by Ned Stark. Instead, he fled tothe Free Cities of Essos and acted as a spy for Lord

Varys (bald eunuch aka Master of Whisperers), disguised as an advisor to Daenerys Targaryen, in

exchange for a royal pardon. He eventually comes to respect Daenerys and her claim to the IronThrone, and decides to serve her legitimatelyforgoing his royal pardon.

We also meet Beric Dondarrion, the leader ofthe Brotherhood Without Banners (explanationhere, page 5). And while the Brotherhood lookslike a trustworthy bunch, note that they serve theLord of Light. Yes, that is same fire god thatMelisandre (crazy red priestess that has a shadow

demon baby crawl out of her vagina) serves. Hechallenges the Hound (who is deathly afraid offire; see his scar) to a trial by combat.

I cant adequately talk about how great that last scene wasit was probably the best seven minutestretch this show has ever done. Daenerys Fucking Stormborn of the House Targaryen.
