1. Institute's basic information

THDC Institute of Hydropower Engineering and Technology is a newly established (in Aug 2011) �rst con-stituent institute of Uttarakhand Technical University with the aim of becoming a world class comprehensiveinstitute with mission of high-quality undergraduate programs and high caliber research development in cutting-edge areas. The institute is situated at B. Puram, Tehri, approximately 150 km from capital city � Dehradunon beautiful site of THDC project.

The institute believes that learning occurs in both the classroom and the laboratory. Therefore, the curriculumof UG programs having various practical based courses in every Semester. This allows students to experience�rst-hand, the joys and challenges of research knowledge.

The institute o�ers following UG programs: B.Tech Mechanical Engineering; B.Tech Civil Engineering; B.TechElectrical Engineering; B.Tech Electronics and Communication Engineering; and B.Tech Computer ScienceEngineering.

In the institute, students can learn in a border less and barrier-free environment. All the class rooms withLCDs, laboratories, instrument rooms, and library are well established. The teaching of all theory courses incombination of power Point and traditional presentations. Internet facility is available to all the students' andfaculties.

The institute is recruiting highly quali�ed faculty members from reputed institute/university preferably IITs/NITs/ world class university with good academic and research experiences to maintain the higher status ofthe institutions.

The institute conducts the regular student development programs, guest seminars/lectures, faculty develop-ment programs and motivates the students to participate the summer training programs. The institute isworking on to arrange the national conferences/workshops, national/international university/institute tie-upfor the growth of students' and faculty knowledge.

The institute thus aims to produce under graduates with a solid theoretical and practical foundation in scienceand engineering backed by excellent research experience who can thrive in a research and innovation intensiveenvironment.

3. A�liating University

The institute is a�liated to Uttarakhand Technical University, Dehradun. The Uttarakhand Technical Univer-sity, Dehradun was established on 27th January 2005 by Govt. of Uttarakhand through the Uttarakhand Tech-nical University Act 2005. The Uttarakhand Technical University campus is situated at NH-72 Suddhowala,Dehradun. Dehradun is the State capital of Uttarakhand well connected through Rail, Road and Air transport.

The University has been established in an area of 8.372 hectare and it is the only a�liating University of thestate for technical institutions. There are 8 Constituent and 132 a�liated colleges with 33,000 students invarious courses .The University imparts education in Graduate, Post Graduate and Doctorate programmes invarious disciplines like Management, Engineering, Hotel Management, Computer Application, Pharmacy etc.The University is serving the technical education through its progress monitored each semester, part timePh.D programme especially designed for the teachers and scientists by giving them opportunity to explore theuntouched area of the research. The University in its own campus running M.Tech and M.Pharma Programmein various disciplines. Apart from this University is having 8 Constituent Colleges. Spreading TechnicalEducation in the remote underprivileged area of Uttarakhand hills.

3.1 Academic Autonomy

The institute in not Autonomous as of present. But is in the process of application.

4. Governance Structure

The institute has fully functioning Board of Governors which came into existence vide government order ofUttarkhand State Govenment in the year 2018. The BoG is fully competent to take any administrative andAcademic decision that it may seem �t to be in favor of the institute. The BoG meets once per quarter ofAcademic Year. The last meeting was held on 27th December 2019. Following is the composition of the BoGas of date.

4.1 Organization Structure

The Director is the head of the institute followed by Dean Academics to look after the Academic A�airs of theInstitute. Assistant Registrar is the head of the administrative works of the institute and is directly under theDirector.

6. Infrastructure

The academic buildings of the institute were fully constructed by THDC-IL from Corporate Social Responsi-bility funds in the period 2011-2014. THDC-IL also build 1 boys and 1 girls hostel, one more girls hostel wasconstructed by funds received from RIC.

6.1 Academic

The �rst year Academic block was constructed in the year 2010. Currently all the classes of �rst year studentsare conducted in this block. Central library of the institute is also located in this block.

The laboratory block was constructed in the year 2010. All the Labs of the �rst year students are conductedin this block. The block has physics laboratory, chemistry laboratory, basic electronics and basic electricallaboratories, the block also has a well equipped computer lab which 60 computers.

The second year block came into existence in the year 2012. Currently two departments computer Scienceand Engineering and electronics and communication engineering are established in this block. All the classes of2nd year to 4th year students of these departments are conducted here. The block also has various Laboratoriesof both the departments.

The third year block came into existence in the year 2013. Currently electrical engineering department isestablished in this block. All the classes of 2nd year to 4th year students of this department are conducted inthis block. The block also has various Laboratories of the department.

The fourth year block who was the last academic block constructed by thdc in the year 2014. Civil engi-neering and mechanical engineering departments are established in this block. The block also has variousLaboratories of both the departments

6.2 Library

The Library, besides having a huge collection of books on Engineering, Science, Technology and Humanitieso�ers Library services through its various divisions. We have attempted to make the THDC IHET Library a21st century knowledge based society of tomorrow. THDC IHET Library shall continue to adapt to challengingnew demands and provides a professional and conducive learning atmosphere for the empowerment of its users.The library has huge collection of text books, Reference books presently more than 18000 books availablein THDC IHET library. The Library has subscribed for 30Magazine. THDC IHET Library is a memberof DELNET (Developing Library Network) New Delhi and institutional member of NDL(National Digital

Library) It aims to collect, store, and disseminate information besides o�ering computerized services to users,to coordinate e�orts for suitable collection development and also reduce unnecessary duplication whereverpossible. Dr. Sumeet Handa is the Dty Librarian of the Central Library.

6.3 Computer Center

The institute has state of art computer center with 100 latest desktop systems. The computer center also hasinternet connectivity of 100mbps provided through leased line connection from BSNL. The network connectiv-ity to all the academic blocks and hostel is provided from the computer center.

Under the grant received from TEQIP-III project the center has been equipped with Cyberoam �rewall im-parting a very secure internet connectivity for both students and faculty.

6.4 Hostels

The institute has three hostels with the combined capacity of accommodating 750 students. The rooms arespacious and regular hygiene is maintained throughout the year. Currently two hostels are for boys and onefor girls. The hostel have fully functioning mess which provide healthy and nutritious food for all the students.The hostels also have sports facility like volleyball court table tennis room and recreation room.

7.1 Computer Science and Engineering Department

The department of CSE has an excellent and rich history and an outstanding record of contributions to theprofession and community. The department is well recognized for excellence in facilities and teaching. TheDepartment o�ers BTech. degree. The Department has a comprehensive curriculum on topics related to allaspects of Computer Hardware and Software with an emphasis on practical learning. The course structureis up-to-date and includes courses on emerging topics to equip our students with the latest developmentsin Computer Science and Engineering. The Department has state-of-the-art infrastructure and computingequipment supported by high speed Ethernet and wireless networks. Our faculty members aim at deliveringtop class education blending their rich research experience with classroom teaching.

Mechanical engineering is one of the core branches of the Engineering curriculum. There are state-of-the-artequipment and test rigs in the Air conditioning and Refrigeration materials science testing lab, measurementand meteorology Lab, Thermodynamics lab, Fluid Mechanics, IC Engines and others. It is a matter of greatpride that the department has a well quali�ed highly experienced and academically strong full time faculty.They have high dedication for imparting learning and analytical skills to the students.

7.3 Electrical Engineering Department

The courses of Electrical Engineering provide to illustrate practical and theoretical aspects of basic electricaldevices, circuits, networks, electrical machines, power electronics, control system, industrial drives and controltransducers and high voltage engineering etc. The global scenario of Electrical Engineers is very bright. Thereis a vast opening abroad and also in the country. Computer Aided Design and Database Management Systemshave acquired a position of high relevance in which electrical engineers are able to do a lot. The industrial andtechnological developments of the country depend upon how e�ciently the electrical energy is utilized. Thecontrol of electrical devices through micro-controllers has become increasingly important and opens new vistasof research and development.

The department o�ers a four-year course leading to the Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering The departmenthas justi�ably prided itself on the quality of its academic programmes and is keeping pace with the latestdevelopments in engineering education. 10. Training Programme for Students and Faculty/Sta�

10.1 GATE-2020 Training

Gate 2020 training was conducted through Empanelled Service Providers of NPIU. M/S The GATE Academywon the bid for conducting the training and starting training the �nal year students from August-2019. Thetime table for classes was made department wise with extra monitoring of weak students in technical areas.The training was successfully �nished in the month of December-2019. Around 300 �nal year students attendedthe training and 270 appeared for the examination held in the month of March-2020. 17 students were able toclear the prestigious examination.

10.2 Employability Skill Training

Employability skill training is being conducted by M/S universal edutech, Bangalore since october 2019. Theservice provider was selected among the empanelled training agencies of npiu. The training is still underwayand is being conducted for 3rd year students. The training and placement cell is Managing the training scheduleand have reported positive feedback from the students for the training. A Total of 265 students are regularlyattending the training program from all the departments.

10.3 Expert Lectures (under Equity Action Plan TEQIP III)

A series of Expert Lectures (under Equity Action Plan TEQIP III) by Dr. Preeti Puri, Assistant Professor,Dr. B. R. Ambedkar National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar were scheduled from November 7, 2019 toNovember 8, 2019 by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, THDC Institute of Hydropower Engineering& Technology (THDC-IHET), Tehri. The titles of these lectures were: �How to Succeed in an Interview� and�Empowerment�. The objective of the �rst lecture was to brush up the employability traits of the �nal yearMechanical students, whereas the second lecture targeted to evoke the sense of empowerment among youngminds. The day wise details are as follow:

10.3.1 Day 1, (NOVEMBER 7, 2019)

It commenced with the inauguration ceremony in the presence of Mr. Himanshu Nautiyal, Head of Department,Mechanical Engineering and other faculties of the department. The expert lecture on �How to succeed in anInterview� was systematically divided into three phases. In the �rst phase, cliché pronunciation errors of thestudents were not only identi�ed by the expert faculty but also recti�ed through real life examples. The secondphase of the expert lecture emphasized as of how to handle questions during interview ranging from behavioral,stress, telephonic to exit interview. The third phase of the expert lecture entirely focused on conducting mockinterviews of the students.

10.3.2 Day 2, (NOVEMBER 8, 2019)

An interactive lecture on evoking the sense of �Empowerment� was delivered by Dr. Preeti Puri. She quotedexamples of Helen Keller and Malala Yousafzai; wherein self-empowerment played a paramount role in changingtheir circumstances. The prime focus of this expert lecture was social strati�cation and how reservation ineducation system, jobs and Schedule Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities Act, 1989) has facilitated incaste based empowerment. She also dwelled upon transgender and women empowerment wherein society as awhole has to contribute in this ongoing process of empowerment.

10.4 Expert lecture on �Cyber Security�

An expert lecture on �Cyber Security� have been organized by Mechanical Engineering Department THDCInstitute of Hydropower Engineering & Technology (THDC-IHET), Tehri on Nov 30, 2019 under TEQIP III.Dr. Vishal Kumar, Assistant Professor, Bipin Chandra Tripathi Kumaon Institute of Technology, Dwarahat,Uttarakhand; have been invited to deliver the lecture especially for II Year Mechanical Engineering students.The e�ort was to make students capable of understanding the concepts of Cyber Security. The lecture wouldalso help the students in their course of Cyber Security (BCST 308). The lecture has covered the followingtopics:

1. Privacy and security issues in online social media

2. How to generate phishing emails

3. How to detect generation and destination/location of received emails

4. Security issues in vehicular adhoc networks.

10.5 Expert lectures on �Solar thermal technologies, Introduction tohydropower & bio-fuels�

A series of expert lectures on �Solar thermal technologies, Introduction to hydropower & bio-fuels� have beenorganized by Mechanical Engineering Department THDC Institute of Hydropower Engineering & Technology(THDC-IHET), Tehri on Oct 11-12, 2019 under TEQIP III. Dr. Varun, Associate Professor, MechanicalEngineering Department, National Institute of Technology (NIT) Hamirpur, (H.P.); have been invited todeliver the lectures especially for IV Year Mechanical Engineering students. The e�ort was to make studentscapable of understanding the concepts of solar thermal applications, hydropower and bio-fuels. Another aspectof conduction of these lectures was to �ll the gap due to lack of some important topics in the syllabus of Non-Conventional Energy Resources (TOE 01). These lectures would help the students in their �nal year projectstoo.

10.6 Expert lecture on �Job Roles for a Mechanical Engineer�

An expert lecture on �Job Roles for a Mechanical Engineer: A Case Study of THDCIL� have been organizedby Mechanical Engineering Department, THDC Institute of Hydropower Engineering & Technology (THDC-IHET), Tehri on Sep 12, 2019 at 11:15 AM under TEQIP III. Mr. Mohit Goel, Senior Engineer, THDC IndiaLtd.; have been invited to deliver the lecture especially for IV Year Mechanical Engineering students. Theduration of the lecture was two hours. The e�ort was to give an industrial exposure to the students. A session

on the preparation for GATE and IES exam have been carried out. In addition to this, Mr. Goel have guidedthe students who are interested for MBA and non-technical Government jobs. Options of entrepreneurshipdevelopment have been discussed as well.

10.7 Expert lecture on �Advanced Hybrid Machining Processes�

An expert lecture on �Advanced Hybrid Machining Processes� have been organized by Mechanical EngineeringDepartment THDC Institute of Hydropower Engineering & Technology (THDC-IHET), Tehri on Aug 30, 2019under TEQIP III. Dr. Manoj Kumar Satyarthi, Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical & AutomationEngineering, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, New Delhi; have been invited to deliver the lectureespecially for III Year Mechanical Engineering students. The e�ort was to make students capable of under-standing the concepts of various hybrid-machining processes in a broader sense. This would de�nitely helpin their UG courses as per the university curriculum and in their �nal year projects. The lecture have beenstarted at 1:50 PM and the following topics have been covered:

1. Types on the basis of interaction of the processes

2. Types of hybrid manufacturing systems

3. Subtractive machining

4. Transformative machining

5. Additive machining

6. Electromagnetic bending

7. Electromagnetic forming

10.8 Workshop on Cyber Security

Department of EE conducted a workshop on Cyber Security for 3rd and �nal year student of Electrical Engi-neering from 30-11-2019 to 02-12-2019. In this 2 days session the theoretical and practical aspects were covered.Using di�erent tools of cyber security and python language various topics were covered i.e password crack &protection, encryption & decryption, IP address tracing and port tracing.

10.9 Expert Lecture on Control Design Strategy

An expert lecture was conducted on �Control Design Strategy and it's Industrial Applications� by Dr. AfzalSikander from Dr. B.R. Ambedkar National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar, Punjab on September 5,2019in Dept. of ECE.

10.10 Two week workshop on JAVA

A two week workshop on JAVA from 13-23 January 2020 was conducted for CSE 2nd year students in associationwith NIELIT Haridwar, Several Topics like java basic, servlet, applet, JAVA Beans, JMF etc. were covered inthe training.

10.11 Workshop on HFSS Simulation Design & Testing

ECE Dept THDC-IHET,Tehri had organized a Workshop on HFSS Simulation Design & Testing 21-24 February2020. 10.12 Training on Digital Board

Under the aegis on NPIU, 19 Digital Boards were installed in the institute, both the institute and studentsare getting bene�ted through Digital Board being used in regular teaching-learning. An online training of theDigital Boards was organised for the faculty members to get familiarize in the tool and techniques of the digitalboard.

15. Linkage with industry

15.1 MoU with NIELIT

THDC-Institute of Hydropower Engineering & Technology (THDC-IHET) has signed an MoU with NationalInstitute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) Haridwar which is engaged in conducting ofnation-wide formal and non-formal courses in the area of IECT besides development of industry oriented qual-ity education and training programmes in the state-of-the-art areas. NIELIT is also a premium institution forExamination & Certi�cation and is very well known for accreditation of Institutions/Organizations for conduct-ing courses in IECT in non-formal sector. NIELIT has already signed anMoU with AICTE for EmployabilityEnhancement Training Programmes (EETP)for conducting summer/advanced training for Engineering Stu-dents.

The MoU, which THDC-IHET has signed with NIELIT Haridwar, focuses on conducting Summer/InternshipTraining Programmes for the students of the THDC-IHET in the latest technologies and FutureSkills areasbesides mutual cooperation and academic collaboration among the two prestigious institutions. The MoU alsoaims at imparting training on latest technologies and providing hands-on skills to students of THDC-IHETin order to enhance their employability and bridging the gap between their academic knowledge and industryrequirements.

Subsequent to signing of MoU between two institutions, various Summer/Advance training programmes havebeen conducted through NIELIT Haridwar for the engineering students of THDC-IHET under TEQIP-IIIProject of MHRD, Govt. of India. About 90 students have been trained in various programmes such as Inter-net of Things (IoT), Python, Web Application Development using Java Enterprise Edition, etc, as under: Also,

THDC-IHET had planned to conduct two Training Programmes through NIELIT Haridwar in the month ofMar-Apr 2020 for Electrical/Civil/Mechanical Engineering students which could not be conducted because oflockdown due to ongoing global pandemic COVID-19. 16. Collaborative Activities

Several collaborative Activites have been done with our twinning partner SoE, CUSAT, Kochi, Kerela duringthe academic year 2019-20.

1. Mr. Jyoti Prakash Semwal, Assistant Prof. CE and Mr. Ashish Joshi, Asst. Prof. CSE have beenincluded in the Board of Studies of SoE, CUSAT, Kochi.

2. Prof. George Mathew (Principal, SoE, CUSAT) has been unanimously included as the member of theBoG of THDC-IHET in the 7th BoG meeting.

3. From 18-21 November-2019 several faculty members of SoE, CUSAT visited THDC-IHET to cover certainpart of the syllabus of B.Tech curriculum of all the departments of our institute.

4. In the visit, the faculties of SoE, CUSAT also guided the faculty members of THDC-IHET in revisingour SARs for NBA accreditation process.

5. A workshop on Electric Vehicle-Scope, Challenges and Developments was organized by Department ofEE, SoE, CUSAT and Department of EE, THDC-IHET under twinning arrangement of TEQIP-III. Theworkshop was held in SoE, CUSAT from 3-10 January 2020. Seven faculty members from THDC-IHETparticipated in the workshop.
