Welcome to Melbourne, the world’s most liveable city, and enjoy what the FAA International

Conference ‘Weaving the Fabric of Time: 2012 and Beyond’ has to offer. Special thanks to

Brian Clark, Glennys Lawton, Barbara Thorp and the committee of the Victorian Astrologers

Association, your hosts for this big event, for their time invested in putting it all together.

Time, you cannot capture it, you cannot keep it, you cannot stop it, but you can master it

and make the most of your time whilst you are here. There is always something new to do

and to learn.

Welcome to the 19th

Biennial Federation of Australian Astrologers (FAA) International

Conference. I wish you an enjoyable and educational experience weaving the fabric of time!

My sincere thanks to the convenors of the conference, Barbara Thorp, Brian Clark, Glennys

Lawton and the committee of the Victorian Astrologers Association, as I know the time,

effort and hard work that goes into creating and convening an FAA Conference. Please repay

the efforts of the convenors and VAA committee by relaxing, making new connections and

renewing previous ones, learning something new and having some fun as we share a small

portion of time together.

Page 2 WEAVING THE FABRIC OF TIME

WELCOME TO THE 19TH FAA CONFERENCE

From Anita Ings, FAA President

From Glorija Lawrence, VAA President

Warmest greetings to all our delegates who come from every state in Oz and to all our

international guests who have travelled so far to be a part of our conference. Welcome to

each of our speakers who make up the rich tapestry of our faculty. And to all the committee

and volunteers, a heartfelt thank you. Each one of you will be an integral member of our

tribe for the next few days. Our astrological village might be small but is diverse with the

variety of dialects, accents and styles of our ancient language, astrology. The soul of our

language, its symbols, signs and metaphors, unites and inspires us to a deeper understanding

of the world we inhabit.

Every two years a branch of the Federation of Australian Astrologers, our national

organisation, convenes the international conference for our astrological community. This

year the Victorian Astrologers Association hosts the conference and will do all it can to make

your experience memorable.

Metaphysically 2012 has already been tagged as a critical year. The theme ‘Weaving the

Fabric of Time: 2012 and Beyond’ reminds us of our participation with a greater cosmic

schedule. While we may have different ideas and concepts about the handiwork of time, fate

and astrology, in the end the subjective experience of astrology can accommodate all these

beliefs.

And what of the time we start – the chart of the conference? The mythological names of the

three weavers of the fabric of time were given to three asteroids. Klotho, who spins the

Page 3 2012 & BEYOND

thread of our human life, is at 10 04 hopefully spinning the threads of continuity of relationships formed

during the conference. Lachesis, who apportions the length of the thread, is at 0 30, while Atropos, who cuts

the thread, sits close by at 29 52. Both conjoin Chiron and Neptune, prompting us to consider how we spin

our personal visions and ideals as well as participate in the fate of the world soul. As the Moon wanes, she

approaches her nodal axis and reminds us of the great round of time. After the workshops on Monday, as the

conference ends, a New Moon is born with all the promise and hope of a new cycle. Such is the mystery of time.

Time present and time past

Are both perhaps present in time future,

And time future contained in time past.

If all time is eternally present

All time is unredeemable.

What might have been is an abstraction

Remaining a perpetual possibility

Only in a world of speculation.

What might have been and what has been

Point to one end, which is always present.

Burnt Norton, T S Eliot

Is time fixed or fluid? What time is it now? Time to be here and enjoy the experience. Welcome to Weaving the

Fabric of Time...

THE ZODIAC APPEALTHE ZODIAC APPEALTHE ZODIAC APPEALTHE ZODIAC APPEAL astrologers in support of our circle of animalsastrologers in support of our circle of animalsastrologers in support of our circle of animalsastrologers in support of our circle of animals

Heartfelt thanks to all who have supported our two previous Zodiac Appeal

campaigns.

In 2009 we launched our first Zodiac Appeal to support Wildlife Victoria in their

heroic effort to attend to the injured animals and devastated habitats caused by the

Victorian bush fires. This campaign has raised over $19,000 to support Wildlife

Victoria rebuilding their shelters.

In 2011 we relaunched the Zodiac Appeal to support the RSPCA Queensland in their efforts to house and relocate both domestic and farm animals after the flood-ravage. Over $5,500 was raised in support of this animal charity.

Our terrestrial circle of animals is always in need and The Zodiac Appeal reminds us that as astrologers we honour and support the sensitivity and sacredness of the animal world symbolised by our celestial zodiac, an eternal metaphor of our inner instinctual life.

Once again we appeal to our astrological community to support the organisations that boldly endeavour to respect and care for animals. In 2012 we are appealing for you to support Animals Australia www.animalsaustralia.org in their tireless effort to promote humane and ethical treatment for animals.

THE ROOMS

The names of our lecture rooms honour some of our astrological elders: Claudius Ptolemy, Guido Bonatti, William Lilly,

Johannes Kepler and Dane Rudhyar. All lecture rooms are air-conditioned and we have endeavoured to plan the seating as

best we can. Lecture times and corresponding rooms are listed in your program. A map is also supplied separately in your

conference bag. Please acquaint yourself with the layout of the college to ensure that you get to your lecture on time.

The Johannes Kepler Room is a short walk through the Academic Courtyard. When the astrologers vanish, it is known as the

Academic Centre.

The Claudius Ptolemy Room is the smallest room behind the

Johannes Kepler Room. Enter via the doors to the left of the

Kepler Room. When the students return, they call this

Tutorial 4 & 5.

The Dane Rudhyar Room is down the corridor from the foyer

where you enter. As you enter the building, turn left. When

University College is no longer having progressions or dwads,

they call this the Heritage Room.

The Guido Bonatti Room is through the Rose Garden

opposite the Trade Fair, or you can also access it from the

Johannes Kepler Room along the path and through the

corridor. It is an Alice in Wonderland adventure so on your

first visit, give yourself some time.

The William Lilly Room is next to Guido Bonatti. When the

transit is over, it’s known as the Recreation Space.

The William Lilly/Guido Bonatti Room combines both these

rooms for our opening lecture, our panels and some of our

lectures.

The Library is open to the delegates as a quiet room to read, use

your computer or relax. There are also internet facilities which

can be booked through the University Registration Desk.

The Dining Room is opposite the Rose Garden. When you enter

the main building, turn right.

ROBERT HAND, KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Dealing with Difficult Chart Combinations

It is not enough to tell clients that they can overcome difficult combinations by free will. We need to provide

strategies and concrete behavioural suggestions as to what to do. Each planet and combination has modes of

living in which the energies of the planets can be made to work positively. Often the problem is that the

individual has either 1) not thought of an appropriate alternative way of living or 2) has been brought up not to

recognise its possibility. This workshop will use the charts of attendees to demonstrate methods which are

drawn from both modern and traditional astrology.

Fri 20 Jan, 9.15 am, Johannes Kepler Room, Extended Lecture**

Planetary Periods in Western Astrology

Hindu astrology bases its predictions on periods of time ruled by a succession of planets. This gives a kind of

overview for large periods of time that is not possible in conventional Western astrology. But there are Western

techniques that do much the same thing. These are the Firdar or Alfirdaries, Profections, Zodiacal Releasings

from the Lots, Primary Directions and other techniques. Firdar come to us from the ancient Greeks via Persian

and Arabic astrology. They are a very simple technique that can be mastered by relative beginners. Profections

are another very simple technique that formed the backbone of astrological forecasting right up until early

modern astrology. The Zodiacal Releasings from the Lots are a newly discovered system from the Greeks that

show great promise. Primary Directions are much more complex and can be covered only briefly in this lecture.

Except for Primary Directions, the basic techniques will be taught (very little calculation required) and applied to

the charts of attendees.

Sat 21 Jan, 9.00 am, Johannes Kepler Room, Lecture

The Medieval Method of Aspects

Aspects were handled very differently by medieval astrologers. For one thing they did not use the modern minor

aspects. Yet they did use some aspects that we do not, such as antiscia, contra-antiscia and aspects by

rulerships. They did not think of aspects as static angles but as a series of events that occurred among the

planets. The order and sequencing of these events and their relationships to each other were of the highest

importance. The modern usage of the Void of Course Moon is just one survival of these methods.

Sun 22 Jan, 9.00 am, Johannes Kepler Room, Lecture

Astrology and the Soul

Contrary to popular belief, medieval astrology did have methods for psychological analysis. They were very

different from contemporary ones, yet based on a sophisticated model of the soul. Instead of classifying

psychological types according to the signs, classification was done according to the planets using a very definite

set of rules. Although these methods have not survived in modern use, they are well documented in the older

astrological literature. Preliminary results using these methods are showing great promise.

JESSICA ADAMS

Sat 21 Jan, 9.00 am, Guido Bonatti Room, Lecture

Astrology, Quantum Physics and Time

If you’re a fan of What the Bleep Do We Know? or fascinated by the new reality of quantum physics, then you’ll

want to apply it to your astrology. Every time you read your chart, you create a new universe for yourself. But

what are you creating, and how can you play the time game?

CLEMENTINE ADKINS

Fri 20 Jan, 9.00 am, Dane Rudhyar Room, Lecture

The Timeless Journey of Soul

Lunar memory contains moods and attitudes formed throughout a lifetime of experiences on planet earth.

While we tend to lose factual information about our time here on earth, emotional memory is something that

survives the trauma of death and rebirth. All planets have nodes and the south node is the one usually referred

to as ‘of the past’. The Lunar South Node then has the distinction of holding our emotional memories. Using

techniques learnt through Steven Forrest and Jeff Wolf Green’s evolutionary astrology schools, this lecture

focuses on the role of Pluto and the Lunar Nodes as the first indicators of an individual’s soul journey. We also

explore possible past life scenarios that are still being played out in the present lifetime.

Astrology in Times of Change

Our craft of astrology is undergoing enormous changes. Life in our modern world looks very different from what

was considered everyday life even just a few decades ago. Analogies and pictures used to describe astrological

archetypes are now in some cases only partially true and even contradictory to our present-day reality. Although

the astrological symbols are still the same – and the core issues the same as well – their expressions vary widely.

In these current turbulent times more and more people seek explanations, understanding and guidance from

astrologers. In this lecture we will look at how astrology is changing, how it needs to change, and how it can

reflect and support changes in the collective.

Saturn: An Esoteric Perspective

Saturn: Chronos, Lord of Time, marker of days, setter of boundaries, force of resistance, devourer of children. As

the ruler of exoteric Capricorn, the great ringed planet proffers tests of mastery over the material world,

bringing success and maturation after disciplined effort, or defeat and limitation if we do not measure to the

task. However, Saturn, esoterically considered the Lord of Karma, holds much more for us through the

understanding of cause and effect. In this talk we explore Saturnian opportunities and tests through the Saturn

cycles, both in the familiar sense and esoterically. We look at Saturn’s esoteric rulership of Libra, the ‘sign of

karma’, and of Capricorn, the ‘sign of initiation’, using mythology, esoteric lore, case studies and our personal

experience to open new lines of enquiry.

Planetary Hours: Their Use in Traditional Astrology and Importance for Understanding Time

Planetary hours go to the heart of astrology in our understanding of the unique quality of time. The most

fundamental assumption of astrology, so rarely stated, is that the quality of time varies from moment to

moment. While the use of clocks in modern society might lead us to assume that time is a stream of uniform

moments of equal quality, ancient astrology points to a different conclusion. In this lecture Peter will explain the

meaning of planetary hours, how they are used and how to calculate them quickly without a computer. Peter

will also explain some applications of the planetary hours in horary and natal astrology.

Adding Details from Dignities and Receptions

This presentation introduces (and clarifies) the traditional philosophy and practical use of dignities and debilities

principles, example charts are used to demonstrate how to judge the effect of aspects in more detail. What is

the difference between harmonious aspects involving debilitated planets, and difficult aspects involving

dignified planets? This level of detail allows the astrologer to judge whether a client should be advised to avoid

an impending problem, or whether they should be encouraged to tackle it head-on, with the intention of

surmounting it. Anyone who has ever struggled to understand why or how reception becomes important in

aspectual contact will find this presentation highly illuminating and refreshingly simple. This will be especially

suitable for beginners and intermediate levels of experience.

A Time for Seeding and Growing in World Affairs: Ceres, Spirit of Democracy

Here we look at the seasons of Ceres, not in her role as mother of the corn, or as the mother who kisses us

A Time for Flowering and Fruiting in Our Lives: Flora and Pomona, Spirits of Grace and Fulfilment

Today we meet two neglected archetypal symbols, Flora (goddess of spring and flowers) and Pomona (goddess

of fruit trees), and see what gifts these goddesses offer via their asteroids. Flora bestows a blooming grace

wherever she goes in the horoscope, allowing us, or our works, to come into full flower on whatever level is

appropriate. Pomona takes this to the next level and brings everything to fruition, showing us what kind of

fulfilment is possible or due for our talents and efforts. If we fail to cultivate our gardens and orchards, then our

flowers and fruits may fall short of our hopes, but we can’t blame the goddesses – or their asteroids – for that.

By understanding the influence of Flora and Pomona we may be able to see a little more clearly what our best

gifts are, what we can do to nurture them, and how to create sweet abundance in our lives.

In the above quote from his Commodity Course, Gann refers directly to planet Saturn or Chronus, known

Love Is Never Blind: The People Who Change You

One of the most oft-asked questions to a professional astrologer is ‘Will I find true love and when?’ But love can

also be a many-ended thing, with the nature of relationship encompassing more than the original question

intended. Soul connection often comes when we least expect it. This presentation analyses the astrological

components of attraction and the inner dynamics of relationship within the individual horoscope. It explores

how, when and why we end up in relationships, using charts of the famous, such as John Lennon and Errol Flynn,

and also some working horoscopes from compliant clients.
