Avnd n vedere situaia economic i nevoia tot mai mare pentru serviciimedicale i educaie, n anul 2012 am fost nevoii s cutm soluii potrivitepentru a rspunde la noile provocri. Cu siguran nu a fost un an uor pentrua demara planuri de construcie i dezvoltare, dar HOSPICE Casa Speraneis-a nscut din credin, dorin de a ajuta i ndrzneal n a visa. Att timp ctfamilia HOSPICE va continua s fac aceste lucruri, tot mai muli pacieni vorbenecia de ngrijirea de care au atta nevoie. De aceea, sunt foarte mndru cfac parte din aceast familie.

2012 has been a year of searching for solutions and rising to new challenges,given the difcult economic situation and the increasing demands for our medicalservices and training. It was denitely not the easiest year to start developing andbuilding, but HOSPICE Casa Sperantei was born out of faith, a will to help anda dare to dream dreams. As the HOSPICE family continues to dream, more andmore patients are getting the care they need. This is why I am so proud to be part

of this family.

2012 a fost un an deosebit n dezvoltarea echipei i a serviciilor noastredin Bucureti. Personalul a crescut ca numr i experien, ceea ce s-areectat i n asistena pacienilor: 449 pacieni n 2011 i 764 n 2012. Amninat o nou echip (Proiectul Drago) n cadrul spitalelor de pediatriedin Bucureti, asigurnd astfel ngrijire i suport pentru copii i tineri cucancer. Ne pregtim n curnd pentru marea provocare - inaugurareaunitii cu paturi HOSPICE n Bucureti.

2012 was a year of development for the Bucharest team and the services offered.The staff grew in number and experience, and the number of patients cared forgrew from 449 in 2011 to 764 in 2012. We set up a new team (Project Dragos)within the Bucharest Paediatric hospitals, offering care and advice to children andyoung people with cancer. We are now preparing for the challenge of opening thenew Bucharest in-patient hospice.

Serviciile sociale i spirituale fac parte integrant din ngrijirile paliative. n anul2012, peste 80% dintre pacienii noi au beneciat de serviciile echipei de asistensocial i ngrijirea nu se oprete doar la pacient - se extinde i la familie. Amconstituit grupe de sprijin, activiti de recreere i respite i am asigurat sprijin nperioada de doliu. Pentru pacienii copii i fraii acestora am organizat tabere i

excursii la mare.

Social and spiritual services are an integral part of palliative care. Nearly 80% ofthe patients referred to HOSPICE in 2012 benetted from the support of our socialwork team and care does not stop with the patient - it also extends to the family.We have been able to offer support groups, recreational and respite activities andcare following bereavement. For our child patients and their siblings we have alsoorganised holiday camps and excursions to the seaside.

The work of the chaplaincy team at HOSPICE Casa Sperantei is to help peopleget closer to God and to people around them It is a delicate work that touches ourpatients, their dear ones and the HOSPICE team. The word of God, which canbe transmitted in different ways, is central to the spiritual care which is provided.The pastoral care of both adults and patients includes various religious rituals,counselling and prayer.

NOILE HOSPICE-URI PE CARE LE CONSTRUIMThe new hospices we are building

Construcia noii uniti cu paturi HOSPICE din Bucureti a nceput n noiembrie 2012.Construction began in November 2012 of a new in-patient hospice for Bucharest.

Cldirea va terminat n toamna anului 2013 i va gata de deschidere n primvaraanului 2014.

The building should be nished in autumn 2013 and will be ready to open to patients in thespring of 2014.

Noul hospice va avea o capacitate de 20 paturi pentru aduli i aduli tineri caresufer de cancer, serviciu de ngrijiri la domiciliu, centru de zi i policlinic.The new hospice will provide 20 beds for adults and young adults with cancer together withday care, home-care and out-patient facilities.

Speranei pentru copii de la Adunaii-Copceni, destinat copiilor cu boli incurabile iprognostic limitat de via.Renovation began in November 2012 of a new Childrens Centre at Adunatii-Copaceni forchildren with life-limiting illnesses. The property was donated by a Romanian family.

After careful negotiations, Conarg wasappointed constructor for the new hospicefacility in Bucharest. The site is in theColentina area of Sector 2, adjoiningLake Plumbuita. Construction work, whichstarted in November 2012, is scheduled tobe nished in late 2013. This desperatelyneeded hospice cannot come soon enoughfor those who need it in Bucharest but

Numele meu este Nicoleta Enescu i pe pe data de 11iulie 2009, soacra mea, n vrst de 71 de ani, a fostdiagnosticat cu cancer de colon. n aceeai zi, soulmeu i cu mine ne pregteam s srbtorim 17 de anide la cstorie, dar ne-a pierit cheful de srbtorit. Dinacel moment, viaa noastr s-a schimbat. Vestea avenit ca un trsnet, din senin, mai ales pentru c boalaa fost descoperit ntr-un stadiu foarte avansat. Am fostdevastai. Mama nu a fost niciodat bolnav pn n acel

moment, poate doar cu o rceal, dar cancer? Ce s-antmplat? Cum de nu ne-am dat seama c ceva nu esten regul?

Noi nu ne vedeam chiar sptmnal c eram destul deocupai, dar totui ne vedeam la 3-4 sptmni. Cndam vzut-o, am fost ocat s vd cum dimensiunilestomacului ei au crescut. Nu am ndrznit s o ntrebce s-a ntmplat, dar am avut un presentiment foarteneplcut. n schimb am ntrebat-o pe ica mea, care i-a

vizitat bunica aproape n ecare zi, cnd a observat cbunicii i s-a mrit stomacul i mi-a spus c s-a ntmplatpe parcursul mai multor sptmni. Cnd s-a prezentatla medic, cancerul era deja n faza 4. S-a intervenitchirurgical, de dou ori ntr-un an, dar dup a doua

Apoi, mi s-a dat un numr de telefon de la HOSPICECasa Speranei. Am sunat i o voce foarte amabil mi-a

spus c medicii i asistentele sunt plecai la pacieni dar lantoarcerea lor voi contactat. Am aranjat o ntlnire i laora convenit au venit s o vad pe mama, oameni careemanau o frumusee interioar, zmbitori, amabili, care autiut cum s aduc alinare. Ei au explicat c tratamentul pecare l ofer este paliativ (nu are caracter curativ) i, oricumtiam c nu mai exist anse de vindecare i ceea ce eraimportant era controlul durerii. n urmtoarele cteva luni,aceti oameni au venit s o viziteze pe mama n ecaresptmn, iar credina i optimismul ei au crescut de

ecare dat cnd i vedea. Ei au oferit sprijin i medicamentepentru durere, i mai mult dect orice, au adus cu ei nunumai buntate i optimism, ci i un calm care provine dinpacea interioar; oameni minunai, cu credin n Dumnezeui o dragoste adevrat pentru semeni.

My name is Nicoleta Enescu and on the 11thJuly 2009, my mother-in-law, aged 71, wasdiagnosed with cancer of the colon. On that sameday, my husband and I were due to celebrate

17 years of marriage, but it no longer felt like atime to celebrate. Our lives changed from thatmoment. The news came like a bolt from theblue, especially because the disease had beendiscovered at a very advanced stage. We weredevastated. Mum had never been ill up untilthis point, maybe just with a common cold, butcancer? What was happening? How did we notknow anything was wrong until now?

We didnt usually see each other every week,such was the rhythm of our lives, but maybe every3 or 4 weeks. When I did see her, I was shockedto see how the size of her stomach had grown. Ididnt dare ask her what had happened, but I hada very bad feeling. Instead I asked my daughter,who visited her grandmother nearly every day,when her stomach had become inated andshe said it had been over the course of severalweeks. By the time she went to the doctor it wasalready Stage 4 cancer. Mum was operated ontwice in the course of a year, but after the secondoperation she hardly got out of bed. We tried

to relieve her pain with medicines, with variousmedical treatments, with prayers and with psalms.During the night my husband stayed with her, andI stayed with her during the day. We were beside

ourselves and we began to ask ourselves if therewere any doctors or treatments for patients in theterminal phase.

Then I was given the number for HOSPICE CasaSperantei. I rang and a kind voice told me thatthe doctors and nurses were out visiting, but theywould contact me. I arranged an appointmentand at the agreed time they came to see mum;

people who were beautiful from the inside, kind,smiling and who knew how to bring comfort. Theyexplained that the treatment they offered waspalliative (rather than curative) and in any casewe knew that a cure was no longer possible andthat it was important to control the pain. Duringthe next few months, these people came to visitmum every week, and her faith and optimism grewevery time she saw them. They offered supportand medicines for pain, and more than anythingthey brought with them not just kindness andoptimism, but a calmness that comes from peacewithin; wonderful people with belief in God and areal love for us all.

n anul 2012, am nalizat un program dinamic de activiti educaionale n domeniulngrijirilor paliative. O parte important a activitii noastre a fost reprezentat determinarea Strategiei Naionale de Dezvoltare a Ingrijirilor Paliative n Romnia.

n august 2012, proiectul a fost prezentat Ministrului Sntii i i propune sasigure cadrul naional care s susin dezvoltarea coordonat i accelerat aserviciilor de ngrijiri paliative din ntreaga ar. Aceast iniiaiv este susinut ide Excelena Sa, Martin Harris, Ambasadorul Marii Britanii n Romnia, cruia imulumim, pe aceast cale.

In 2012 we were able to organise a dynamic programme of educational activitiesin palliative care. An important part our work was the completion of the NationalStrategy for the development of palliative care in Romania.

The project was presented at the Ministry of Health in August 2012 and aims tocreate national frameworks to ensure the coordinated and accelerated developmentof palliative care services in order to improve the quality of life for terminally ill

patients all over the country. This initiative is also sponsored by His Excellency MartinHarris, British Ambassador to Romania, to whom we offer our sincerest thanks.

Pentru echipa de stngere de fonduri, anul 2012 a reprezentat un an plin de provocri.Am avut satisfacia de a organiza o mulime de campanii i evenimente, deja tradiionale,care au avut succes n anii anteriori, cum ar Maratonul Internaional Bucureti, turneelede fotbal i tenis de mas, Balul Anual Floare de Col. Am reuit s organizm ievenimente noi, cum ar un concurs de not, un transmaraton i o concurs de alergarentre Bucureti i Soa.

2012 was a year full of challenges for our fundraising team. We had the satisfactionof being able to organise a lot of campaigns and events that have been traditionallysuccessful such as the Bucharest International Marathon, the Football Tournament, theTable Tennis tournament and the Edelweiss Ball. However, we also managed to introducenew events such as a swimming competition, a transmarathon and a Balkan RunningChallenge from Bucharest to Soa.

The hospices services are dedicated to the community, so the organisation functions like

a living organism and grows its resources from within the community. The 2% campaignin 2012 demonstrated that our services are appreciated and recognised. A lot of artistsresponded to our invitation to perform at various concerts and schools have also involvedthemselves in our fundraising. We have also received support from our local authoritiesand the local media, who have been great ambassadors of our appeals.

Voluntarii HOSPICE ajut la ngrijirea pacienilor, ndepartamentul administrativ precum i la evenimentele icampaniile de strngere de fonduri pe care le organizm.Our volunteers provide help with patient care, administrationand fundraising.

Voluntarii reprezint coloana vertebral a organizaiei.Our volunteers are the backbone of the HOSPICE.

My name is Claudiu, I am 20 years old and I have been volunteering for three yearsnow in the service of HOSPICE Casa Speranei. I rst got the taste of it when Iwas still in high school, with plenty of free time and energy that needed to be usedwith a purpose. What motivated me and that still motivates me is the fact that I amone of the luckiest persons on earth - I am healthy, I have the support of my familyand I have access to education. I wake up in the morning and I can smile thinking ofthese. But others cannot. Thus I have learnt to cherish every smile and I have tried tooffer my best in all that I do. But the one most important thing I can say I have learntduring these years is the fact that any voluntary help given to a person in need or toan NGO is priceless, because it brings, beyond the physical effort, a moral support

which is, most of the time, the real help that is needed.
