A word from your Chair …..

At some time, in some way, we must all face the end of life. Most of us share a com-

mon hope - that when death comes to us or to a loved one, it will be peaceful and free

of pain. We hope to face death surrounded by those we love, feeling safe,

comfortable and cared for. (HAO)

While reading many publications about Hospice care I came across this statement, -

“Canadians living in remote and rural areas, or those living with disabilities, have

severely limited access to hospice palliative care services.” I am so proud of our

hospice volunteers and the community that supports us. Although we are small, with a

large geographic area, we provide care and assistance for many in the most trying time

of their lives.

All the work, support and assistance does not just happen! The good works that are

achieved in our Hospice are a result of a fantastic staff and dedicated volunteer

network. Every day our volunteers give their time freely and with no expectation of

monetary reward or recognition of any kind. Their hours of service ensure that our

many activities are accomplished and many people are helped.

Our staff continue to develop our organization into a caring, efficient and viable

establishment. They co-ordinate the efforts of our volunteers to provide the best care

possible. Our Hospice House continues to be a symbol of unity of purpose. In North

Hastings, the community comes together to provide the services and fill the needs of

the people of the North. We are a hardy group and proud of it!

VOLUNTEER PROFILE: Rejane RossVOLUNTEER PROFILE: Rejane RossVOLUNTEER PROFILE: Rejane Ross

How long have you been a

Volunteer?

I have volunteered with Hospice since the

Fall of 2006.

Why did you select the Hospice

to volunteer? While working in hospitals, I noticed that all technologies and heavy workloads meant that nobody had time to accompany end-of-life patients through their last moments. Volunteering at the Hospice gives me time to do that.

What has being a volunteer meant to

you? It gives me a chance to do what I thought

nurses were supposed to do: provide

comfort to people who need it regardless

of what they can afford

Any special moments in your time as a

volunteer that you would like to share? Seeing family members that had been

somewhat estranged get together again to

support each other and be with their loved

one is especially gratifying.

A word from the Coordinator: Thank you Rejane for all of those night

and double shifts at the Hospice House and

in the community. Your calm, warm

personality is appreciated by clients,

families and of course by Hospice. It is a

pleasure to work with you!!!!

Thank you Rejane - you are a

Hospice Staff and Volunteers would like to extend our deepest sympathy to one of our own volunteers.

Marie Hickey lost her husband Steve to cancer this past December.

Marie…you are in our thoughts and prayers.

THANK YOU!!!!

Connie would like to extend a big Thank You to all of the volunteers who helped with the Memorial Dove Tree Fundraiser!!

This would not be possible without you.

Heather’s Highlights ….

“You cannot discover new oceans unless you are willing to lose sight of the shore.” Andre Gide

All of us at Hospice are excited and invigorated as our time with the SELHIN is coming to an end.

Hospice did serve notice to the Ministry of Health and the SELHIN that we would not be signing another

agreement with them because …. “ it is our opinion that the imposition of onerous administrative costs and

processes associated with such a small allocation has in fact lessened our effectiveness as a rural care provider.”

Let„s have three cheers for the Board of Hospice North Hastings…a strong, innovative Board of Directors that

are not afraid of change and that have faith in their community and their staff.

Are there going to be changes to Hospice in the future…YES!! Good changes…more staff time with clients, more

volunteers being booked into homes that need hospice services …and yes… more fundraising activities!!

Thank you to everyone in our wonderful community for their support and encouragement over the past year…we

will not let you down!!

As always, if we can be of any assistance, just call.

Heather

Bereavement/ Grief Support

“Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, Love leaves a memory no one can steal” From a headstone in Ireland.

Please call Hospice for information or to reserve a spot in our next afternoon/evening

Grief Support Group.

Notes to Hospice:

We thought we would start to share some excerpts from notes/letters we receive at the Hospice House:

“The care and love that you gave and shared with my grandma in the last precious days of her life will never be forgotten.”

“We are so blessed in our small town to have Hospice House. It was our home away from home from the instant we arrived.

Hospice House was like heaven and helped to prepare us for the end. Words cannot express how grateful we are to have

experienced the love we all shared at Hospice. We’ll never forget.”
