Dear Parents, Old Greys and Friends of The Grey

ACADEMICS

GRADE 12 TRIALS At the time of writing, our Matrics have finished with their Trial examinations, having written common papers set by the Department of Education. There is absolutely no doubt that the experience of writing full-length, finals-standard papers in rigorous exam conditions is of inestimable benefit to our boys in preparing for their finals next term. GRADE 12 FINALS These examinations are scheduled to commence on Tuesday 24 October (English Paper 1) and end on Monday 27 November with English Paper 3, although CAT (16 Oct), IT (17 Oct) and Visual Arts and Music (dates tbc) practicals are written earlier. For exact details, you may wish to consult the final Grade 12 exam timetable, which is available at: http://www.ecexams.co.za/2017_Assessment_Instructions/AssIn_40_2017_FinalGr12NSCTimetable.pdf

This site (http://www.ecexams.co.za/ExaminationPapers.htm) No 29/2017, in particular, is also an abundant source of past Matric papers (as our Grade 12s should be aware). It should be noted that the last week of the third term and the first week of the fourth term (before Valedictory on Friday 13 October) can be of considerable importance for our Matric class in terms of last-minute preparations and consolidation of the year’s work. Issues and problems arising from the Trial papers will be revisited in as much depth as possible. It goes without saying that attendance is compulsory during this time. We wish our Matrics every success as they focus on the task of realising their goals. The release of the Grade 12 NSC results will probably be scheduled for early January 2018, with the closing date for re-mark applications being about two/three weeks later, approximately 27 January 2018. The media will publicise these details nearer the time. GRADE 9 – The Grade 9 class will be writing common, provincially-set papers in some of the GET subjects (Languages and Mathematics), which will be interwoven with internally-set examinations in the other subjects. GRADE 9 SUBJECT CHOICE EVENING – This meeting is scheduled for Wednesday 25 October. The evening will commence with an address by School Counsellor, Mr Hendrik Uys, followed by the opportunity to discuss your son’s subject choice with his Subject Teachers and the School Counsellor. Of very great importance is the new departmental regulation, recently promulgated, which states that pupils wishing to offer Physical Sciences and/or Accounting in Grade 10 must offer Mathematics as a compulsory subject. GRADES 8, 9, 10 & 11 – INTERIM REPORTS for these grades have been issued. Parents are encouraged to discuss any problem areas, concerns or delights with Subject Teachers or Grade Heads. Please also encourage your sons to adopt a sense of urgency in preparing to take on the challenge of the very important final examinations next term. FINAL EXAMS OCT/NOV 2017 – The State has released the final examination timetable for Grade 10 and 11. Exams commence for Grade 11s on Tuesday 24 October with CAT Paper 1

Page 4: the 3rd Term at a glance - Grey High School€¦ · The evening will commence with an address by School Counsellor, Mr Hendrik Uys, followed by the opportunity to discuss your son’s

(Practical) and end on Friday 24 November with Life Orientation. Please note that certain internally-set examinations (viz. Life Orientation; ICDL) are still to be added to the departmental timetable. The official end-of-year combined examination timetable for all grades in the school will be published in the fourth term Calendar, with the last exam for all grades (except Grade 12) to be written on Friday 24 November, finishing at 10:00, after which Final Assembly will be held from 10:30-12:00. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: What common Grade 11 papers are we writing in October/November this year? All

papers (except for Life Orientation and ICDL) are provincially set.

Are we doing National/Provincial Grade 10 end-of-year exams this year? Yes – for

Mathematics, Mathematical Literacy, Physical Sciences, Accounting, Life Sciences, History, Geography and Business Studies.

Are the Grade 9s writing full-scale exams this year? Yes – a mixture of provincially-set

and internal papers.

ABSENCE FROM CONTROLLED TESTS AND EXAMINATIONS Should a boy miss a controlled test or an examination, a doctor’s certificate must be submitted upon his return to school. Parents are reminded that the controlled test schedule and the exam timetable are printed in the term calendar – they should familiarise themselves with these details. A boy cannot come back to school (“well” again) the day after the test, and expect to write the test that he missed – obviously, it has by then been compromised, so other arrangements in terms of obtaining or estimating the missing mark would come into force. CHANGING SUBJECTS (IN THE F.E.T. PHASE – GRADES 10/11/12) Official departmental policy (as contained in Assessment Instruction 19/2014) permits a pupil to change a maximum of two subjects in his Grade 10 or Grade 11 year. The policy further allows for a Grade 11 pupil, in exceptional cases, to change one additional subject after the release of the Grade 11 year-end results but before 15 December of the Grade 11 year (i.e. between, approximately, 05 December and 15 December). This implies that no subject changes may be done in the Grade 12 year! Closing dates for changing subjects in 2017 are:

15 December 2017 for the Grade 12s of 2018 (realistically, probably only a change from Mathematics to Mathematical Literacy should be contemplated at this stage);

31 March 2018 for Grade 11; 30 June 2018 for Grade 10. It should, however, be noted that all proposed changes are

dependent, in the first instance, on a variety of internal school factors, including, for example, class sizes, availability of teaching staff, and so on. It is not a “given”.

MUSIC RESULTS

Our Matric musicians delivered impressive performances at the Annual Grey/Collegiate Matric Concert, which was held at our sister school this year. The Grey Strings Orchestra travelled to Uitenhage early this term to perform for the highly appreciative Riebeek College girls. Well done to them and to Mrs Marliza Taylor for a splendid show. The Grey Gentlemen’s Evening was a tasteful evening where the ambience was set by superb performances by our Voices and Strings. It was our turn to be the hosts for the Annual Grey/Selborne Entertains Concert, which was a fun event. Both school bands also performed the following day at the Farmer’s Market. The Grey Symphonic Winds delivered solid performances on two successive evenings at the PE Bands’ Festival, held at Alexander Road High School. The Grey Orchestra gave an impressive performance of a mostly classical programme at Grey Junior’s “Grey Way Concert”. We highly value our participation in this excellent event. Special thanks to Mr Lindsay Pearson and our colleagues in the Grey Junior Music Department. It is with great pride that we congratulate Gerhard Olivier (Piano) for winning the annual SASMT Music Competition. Congratulations to James van der Merwe for obtaining 91% in his Trinity College London Grade 8 Certificate in Singing. The results of the Royal Schools’ Music exams will follow next term.

STAFF MATTERS

Mr Brian Jacobs (English) takes his leave of us at the end of the year – he will take up a teaching post in the UK. His role as Grade 8 Head will be filled by Mr Declan McLaggan. Mr Matthew Osborne, currently at Alexander Road, will be joining our English Department at the start of 1st Term 2018. Mr Byron Schmidt also recently departed our shores and has accepted a position in a Rugby Academy in Frankfurt, Germany. Mr Zaine Marx will fill this teaching position. Mr Carl Snyman has been appointed as Deputy Housemaster of Lang. Mr Ian Clifford will be leaving the teaching profession to take up a business opportunity – and this towards the end of the 3rd Term. Mr Steyn van Eeden’s “sense of adventure” has also led him to take up a teaching post in Malaysia. This post will be filled by Mrs Michelle Miles – we are delighted that she will be returning to join our Mathematics Department at the start of the 4th quarter. We wish our departing members of staff all the very best as they take up new challenges and thank them for their many and varied contributions to The Grey.

PROMOTION POST VACANCIES – PL4 (Rector); PL3 (Deputies) and PL2 (HOD)

Our appointed panel of School Governing Body members, departmental officials and observers have worked extremely hard over the past few weeks processing all applications for these posts. The tasks of shortlisting and interviewing have been completed and ‘ranked’ recommendations

have been forwarded to the DoE (Department of Education) for their rubber stamp of approval. Only once this has been done, can any formal announcements be made. Grateful thanks to all involved – Messrs Greg Billson (Chairman), Mark Bakker, Craig Jessop and Howard Schady (representing the SGB), Bryan Knox and Lindsay Pearson (Observers), Mrs Cheryl Crulci (Secretary), Dr Peter Manser and Mr Pedro van Vuuren (representing the DoE), Messrs Peter du Preez and Anton Adams (Union officials). The hours spent on this exercise is appreciated and certainly not taken for granted.

OLD GREY GATHERINGS

It was recently my privilege, together with National President of the OGU, Mr Dave Hurr, and other committee members, to meet with our Old Greys, Parents and Friends of The Grey in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Port Alfred and Graaff-Reinet – all special and hugely positive occasions that were thoroughly enjoyed by ALL in attendance. Congratulations to all those who ‘walked the extra mile’ in putting these splendid occasions together.

HEADMASTERS’ CONFERENCE: 23 – 25 AUGUST

This annual gathering of Heads of traditional Boys’ Schools was, this year, held at the Marrick Safari Game Lodge, close to Kimberley. Participating schools were: Grey High, Grey College, Wynberg, SACS, Rondebosch, Westville, DHS, Glenwood, Pinetown Boys’, Northwood, KES, Jeppe, St Andrew’s (Bloem), Pretoria Boys’, Dale, Selborne, Queen’s, Affies, Graeme College, Muir College, Highlands North, Kimberley Boys’, Maritzburg College, Paarl Boys’, Parktown Boys’, Potchefstroom Boys’ and Paul Roos. It is always a great get-together of Heads of like-minded Boys’ Schools and a stimulating and uplifting few days.

GRADE 11 CAMP: MONDAY 28 AUGUST – FRIDAY 1 SEPTEMBER

A very successful, challenging and enjoyable “gees-opbou” camp was held in Cradock for all Grade 11s. Congratulations to our future Seniors and Leaders – the group was impressive and tackled all tasks with great enthusiasm and purpose. The camaraderie experienced has certainly set the tone for a great and successful year for our Matrics of 2018.

Sincere thanks to Mr Anton Scholtz and to all staff and outsourced professionals for taking care of our men during this physical and testing excursion.

MATRIC DINNER: FRIDAY 2 SEPTEMBER

The annual Matric Dinner took place at the beautiful and luxurious Boardwalk Convention Centre. The décor and table settings carried the theme of ‘Casino Royale’ through to the last detail. A sense of occasion and dignity prevailed and our Matrics of 2017 were immaculately turned out.

The speaker was Bjorn Steinbach who matriculated in 2002. He left the Matrics with a valuable lesson that perseverance and hard work are vital when trying to achieve your dreams. Bjorn pursued his acting career in New York with films such as ‘Small Killing’ and the triple Emmy award winning series ‘Generation Kill’. He has worked on numerous internationally acclaimed productions which boast Emmy awards and Oscar nominations. He has also worked with the likes of Clint Eastwood and Matt Damon.

Sincere thanks must go to Mr Louis Potgieter and Mrs Lynette Swart for the organisation of

Page 10: the 3rd Term at a glance - Grey High School€¦ · The evening will commence with an address by School Counsellor, Mr Hendrik Uys, followed by the opportunity to discuss your son’s

A farewell tea for all Matrics will be held in the Rectory Garden on 12 October at 16:00, which will be followed by our traditional march from the school (Pollock Field) to the Donkin Reserve. The march will start at 17:15. The Matric Troop, to the accompaniment of our Military Band, will follow a route around Park Drive, across Rink Street and down Pearson Street to the Donkin Reserve. Here a short service will be held, in front of the Old Grey Institute, where tribute will be paid to our roots and to our illustrious past. All parents and supporters are encouraged to attend this moving ceremony and to support our Matrics of 2017 en-route to the Grey Institute.

PRIZE-GIVING AND VALEDICTION – FRIDAY 13 OCTOBER

Our annual Prize Giving will commence at 08:45, sharp, on Friday 13 October. Parking will be provided on the Gordon Field – entrance on McLean Road. As a result of limited space, seats for prize winners’ parents only will be set aside in the gallery of the de Waal Hall on a first-come, first-served basis. Please be seated by 08:30. prize-winners, their parents, guests and Matrics after the ceremony. (Break: 09:40 – 10:20). Our Valedictory Assembly will commence at 10:40, sharp, on the same morning. Grade 12 parents arriving for the Valediction should proceed to the Edkins Quad by 09:40, for tea in the Restaurant, prior to the commencement of the Valedictory Service. After the ceremony, it is customary for our Matrics to leave the School ‘neath The Tower’ and make their way down the avenue to the front gates. Men of The Grey, together with staff, line the avenue. Our Matrics walk en masse to the Old Grey Club to await the arrival of the fathers for the Fathers’ and Sons’ Luncheon.

OLD GREYS’ UNION – FRIDAY 13 OCTOBER

The Fathers’ and Sons’ Luncheon will, as always, be held after our Valedictory Assembly on Friday 13 October 2017. This annual event is traditionally hosted by the OGU at the Old Grey Club. Matrics are reminded to settle payments for their lunch, the Old Grey Ties and their OGU Membership. Matric leavers are reminded that it is a condition that an Old Grey Tie be worn only if one is a member of the Old Grey Union. Matrics are urged to make every effort to confirm their membership as soon as possible. Please contact Mrs Lauren Malan, Office Manager of the OGU, at their office at school, or on 041 392 7625. Other contact details: [email protected].

REMEMBRANCE DAY – TUESDAY 7 NOVEMBER

Due to the times of external exams being written on Friday 10 November, we have moved our Remembrance Day Ceremony to 11:00 on Tuesday 7 November. All are most welcome to attend this special service in the Memorial Quad. Please be seated by 10:40 in the Quad.

INTRA-MURAL REPORTS

ATKV SPELATHON - Teacher-in-charge: Mrs Susan Bloem

This year we, once again, entered Gr. 9 and 10 boys in both the Afrikaans Home Language and First Additional Language Spelathon. Nafi Alam (Gr. 9) came second in the FAL section and will represent the Eastern Cape in the national finals which will be held in Gauteng in October.

BLOOD PEER PROMOTERS - Teacher in charge: Mrs Carla Barclay

The third Blood Bank for 2017 took place in the Murray Gymnasium on 31 July where a total of 83 units was collected. This exceeded the target set for the school by the SANBS. A very special thank you to all the new donors, mostly Grade 10, who came forward to donate. Well done to Meriway for once again recording the most units donated per house.

COMMUNITY SERVICE - Teacher-in-charge: Mrs Amoré Kember

Community Service managed to raise funds for our Chess club, here at Grey, to assist their competitors in the rural areas with proper chess sets. Thank you to those members who are always willing to walk that extra mile. You are truly dedicated to the cause. We are in the process of accepting applications for our 2018 Community Service Society Committee. We remain committed to making the surrounding community a better place.

FIRST AID - Teacher-in-charge: Mr Tyler Botha

The first aid society had another extremely busy term. The first aiders where involved in traditional Derby Weekends, Midweek Rugby and Hockey matches, the boda vs daypot rugby, 7s tournament

and the The Hirsch Shield.

GAMING CLUB – Teacher-in-charge: Mr Zaine Marx

The gaming club took part in a six week long weekly Friday fixture against various schools from around the country. These schools were, Empangweni, Northwood, Jeppe, Westville and Parktown. We competed in both D.O.T.A 2 and League of Legends. Valuable experience was gained by all players involved. The fourth term will bring about another series of friendly matches against opposition from all over the country.

GREY ARTS – Teacher-in-charge: Miss Lynn Thomson

James van der Merwe took part in the Pearson Arts Festival in August. He received Double Gold with Distinction for singing (solo) and acting (monologue). He performed at the Pearson Prestige Concert and received standing ovations for his performances. Ruben van der Wat and Gerhard Woithe also took part in the festival. Both received Gold Certificates for their creative writing pieces.

GREY PULSE - Teacher-in-charge: Mrs Amoré Kember

Grey Pulse has, yet again, been involved in serving the school this term. The boys were involved in waitering at the Gentleman’s evening and the Grey Union Dinner. They were also setting up and restoring venues before and after school. We thank everyone for their commitment and dedication to the Grey. We are currently in the process of accepting applications for our 2018 Grey Pulse committee and will be announcing the new leaders soon.

GREY UNION - Teacher-in-charge: Mr Brian Jacobs

The term commenced with the handing over of the proceeds of the Winter Woolies collection to Heatherbank Primary School. The rest of the term was dedicated to the collection of stationery for the Ubuntu Education Trust. This term also saw the annual Grey Union Dinner held in the restaurant. The guest speaker was Mr Neil Thomson who gave an excellent, inspiring and heartfelt speech in which he gave the men some of the wisdom and advice acquired over his many years as a teacher at The Grey. At the dinner the outgoing committee handed over the reins to the new senior committee for 2018 and announced the positions on that committee. The positions are: Chairman – Michael Marais, Vice Chairman – Mfundo Mabula, Secretary – Nyiko Nketane, Treasurer – Luke Butler, Registrar – Brad McNaughton and Leadership Development – Dinkie Parker. We wish all these men well for the year ahead.

GUITAR CLUB - Teacher-in-charge: Mr Declan McLaggan

Despite the busyness of the term, we are excited by the growth and improvement of some of our senior members. This has seen members take part as guitarists in the SCA worship evening, playing their first gigs and even busking at The Grahamstown National Arts Festival.

LIBRARY - Teacher-in-charge: Mrs Michele Bezuidenhout

Mr Gerald Baise, who lives in Durban and was at the school this year for his 60th reunion, contacted Mrs Bezuidenhout to offer her some books. In his words “books which were very pleasant”. He donated a fair number of books on Music and Art to our school, which turned out

to be absolutely PRICELESS - a dream collection! It is donations like this that contribute to what can be termed the “exclusive” content of our library.

PRESERVATION SOCIETY - Teacher-in-charge: Mr Carl Snyman

This term we embarked on the call from One Land Love It (OLLI), a rhino sanctuary close to the Kruger National Park, looking after adopted rhinos. The request was for the school to adopt a baby rhino that they had adopted during the course of the year, and named Grey. We, as a school, have decided that we will contribute in a monetary sense towards this worthy cause. We are still in the process of collecting money. To mark National Arbour week, we planted a tree on the perimeter of the Gordon Field; the Witstinkhout was generously donated by Sherwood Garden Centre.

QUIZ CLUB - Teacher-in-charge: Mrs Nelia Peters

The quiz club attended the Continental Schools Quiz. Grey entered two teams. The first team came in at 3rd place and the second team at 4th. The first team consisting of Nikhil Riga, Gerhard Woithe, Alex Heynes and Dylan de Lange won R3000 for the school and R250 for each participant.

SCA - Teacher-in-charge: Mrs Linda Carr

The SCA has had a busy and blessed third term. After much planning and attention to the finer details, 11th August dawned and we set off on our highly-anticipated SCA Camp. Due to changes at van Stadens, our camp was held at a new venue this year, Oceanview Forest Resort in Seaview. We were truly delighted with the venue, from the practicality side as well as being awed by the beauty of our surroundings. The theme for the camp was “God’s Ironmen – a superhuman experience”. Our guest speakers over the weekend, Dr Deon Els, Rev Ken Carr and Mr Benjamin Friedemann, inspired our young men to be courageous, to believe in themselves and the supernatural power of God and to work tirelessly to develop the qualities that God is looking to build in us. We were also blessed to have the Oxygen Life Worship Band share with us on the Saturday evening, which added a special dimension to an extraordinary weekend of growth. We expressed our deep appreciation for the fact that our guests all gave up time on a weekend in order to invest in the spiritual and personal growth of our young leaders. Nobody left the camp unchanged by what we had seen and heard! We are also, as always, truly grateful to Mrs Sue Atherton for providing us with delicious food for the weekend and to Mr Carl Snyman for accompanying us on the camp this year, along with Mrs Carr. Our morning and second break meetings continue to be of huge benefit to all who attend them and we thank our committee for their tireless dedication to these gatherings. We are currently in the process of accepting applications for our 2018 SCA committee and look forward to welcoming some new leaders.

SIGHT AND SOUND - Teacher-in-charge: Mr Simon Sonderup

Members wrapped up yet another busy winter season of filming. In addition to welcoming 5 new junior members, we also elected a new committee for 2017-2018. The chairman is Luke Bowers; editor and deputy is James Bedford; processor is Merwe du Toit; and room manager is Ross Dickie. A big thank you to the outgoing committee, Josh Stander, Kyle Gibson and Glen Zangel – your legacy will be to have expanded the club’s influence, and raised the bar substantially for all to follow. A special thank you to Stander from the Master in Charge for being rock steady in your commitment and presence throughout the last year. Lastly, congratulations to the following

who were awarded full colours – Luke Bowers, James Bedford, Merwe du Toit and Ross Dickie, and half-colours, Siddharth Ranchod and Keagan van Rooyen.

SPEAKERS’ CLUB - Teachers-in-charge: Ms Kirsten Swarbrook & Catherine Wilson

This year’s Speaker’s Club Programme officially started on the 8th of September 2017. Fourteen Grade 11 and Grade 10 pupils are participating and boys are not only required to present prepared speeches at weekly meetings, but are also thrown in the deep end by having to present unprepared speeches. The club gives the boys the opportunity to develop their public speaking skills and to learn the skills necessary to organise and run effective formal meetings. Their growth in confidence and ability is astounding and we look forward to further meetings to be held in the upcoming weeks.

SPORTS REPORTS

AIR-RIFLE CLUB

We wish them well. At the recent colours awards, Jacob was re-awarded full colours, while Luke Dirsuwei and Dylan Vimpany won team awards.

ATHLETICS

100th HIRSCH SHIELD As Grey was hosting an event that started in 1917, there was a fair amount of pressure on our athletes to do well. Conditions were fair with a light drizzle in the morning. In the U14 Sammy Gunn Shield competition, Divan Moss won the 400m and Loren Ferreira won the Pole Vault. Despite winning only two events outright, the U14s managed to win the Sammy Gunn Competition. In a strategic move to bolster our chances of winning the Hirsch Shield, two of the top U16 athletes were moved to the U19 age-group, destroying any chance they might have had in the SF Edwards Shield competition. They remained competitive but Arnold Coetzee recorded the only win in the Discus Throw. The captain, Dylan Finlay led by example by winning the 1500m and 3000m. This was followed by wins by Waqar Solaan in the Long Jump, Gerik Rautenbach in the Shot Put as well as the Discus Throw and Bulumko Ntuthu in the High Jump. The Grey athletes also won the Rogaly Cup, for middle distance, the Badcock Cup, for field events, as well as the O’Hare Cup for jumps. Congratulations to our Athletes!

CRICKET

The 1st XI participated in the Pearson Cricket Festival, winning all three of their matches. The team had comfortable wins against Muir, Hudson Park and Daniel Pienaar. Special achievements in the three matches were as follows: Elnathan Meiri got his maiden 1st XI ton with 117 vs DP, Tristan Stubbs 54 vs DP, Heath Richards 85 vs Hudson Park, LJ Du Preez

CROSS-COUNTRY

The highlight of the season, and the event for which the men had been training the hardest, was the Cape Schools’ Week held, this year, at Rondebosch. This event is a really tough one, involving very strong schools from the Eastern and Western Cape, that occurs every second year. The first event was an 8km individual and team event that was comfortably won by Dylan Finlay with Aidan Dugmore 2nd and Cody Coombe-Davis finishing in 12th place. Overall the team were placed 3rd behind SACS and Selborne.

Everything rested on the 6 by 2km relay, held on a physically challenging and technically difficult course at Groot Constantia wine estate, two days later. The Grey men responded admirably in a very exciting race that soon came down to a battle between Grey and Selborne. The lead changed several times before Aidan Dugmore crossed the finish line on the last leg to give the Grey team a fine victory. Excellent captaincy and race planning by Dylan Finlay and Aidan Dugmore, and superb individual effort from each of the team members, proved crucial to the victory. The victory meant that Grey were placed tied in 1st place for the week with SACS and Selborne.

Poor weather led to the cancellation of the last league event, which meant that the only event the cross country athletes participated in during the third term was the East Cape Champs held at St Albans’ Prison. In pouring rain and miserably cold weather Dylan Finlay (2nd) and Aidan Dugmore (4th) produced good results against a very strong field in the u19 division. In the U14 division Bryn Dugmore came 9th and in the U15 division Hlumelo Mooi came 8th.

As a result of their performances during the season and at the champs Dylan Finlay, Aidan Dugmore and Hlumelo Mooi were selected to represent the Metro team at the Eastern Province Championships.

GOLF

The final two derby fixtures of the year took place during this term. Five teams played against Grey College and, even though the younger players struggled with the conditions, the teams generally performed well in Bloemfontein. The second and first teams won their matches with the 1st Team’s victory being their first in Bloemfontein in six years. The final match was against Selborne College at Humewood links. The Grey 1st Team managed to beat a very strong Selborne side by 6 and a half matches to 1 and a half matches. The Grey Junior Festival took place over the long weekend in August with 10 teams from around the country taking part. The festival was enjoyed and served as a development festival for junior players. The overall results were AFFIES A first, AFFIES B in second place and Grey High in 3rd place. The festival is growing from strength to strength and promises to be much bigger next year. We would like to congratulate Andrew Jeffrey, Lumi Mantshiyo and Reece Coleman for being selected for the EP U19 Golf Team. We wish all these players the best for the tournament they will take part in during the September holidays.

HOCKEY

Yet another busy Hockey season drew to a close earlier this term. Many thanks to players, coaches, First Aiders and parents for your dedication and support. The 1st Team completed a successful season, playing a total of 25 matches against schoolboy opposition, of which they won 17, drew 5 and lost 3. (Goals for - 68; Goals against -18).

The main Derby days were played against York, Grey College, Pearson and Selborne. Against York, we played 7 matches, with one draw and six wins. Away to Grey College was a very even encounter with 13 matches played of which five were won, five were lost and three were drawn. Against local rival, Pearson, we came through unscathed, winning all 14 matches played. In our final fixture, at home to Selborne, we managed to win all ten of the matches played – a rare feat! Congratulations to the U16B Team who finished the season unbeaten. The Inter-House competition was a closely contested affair. Congratulations go to Thurlow, who won the senior section, and Lang, who won the junior section. Well done also to the overall winners Meriway. Congratulations also to the following players on their selection to Provincial and National Teams: Jared de Kock – SA U18B; Matthew Keevy – SA U18B; Kyran Cooney – SA U17 & EP U21; Cody Posthumus – SA U17 & EP U21; Luke Wynford – SA U17; Ricky King – SA U16 High Performance Squad; Jared Kirsten – SA U16 High Performance Squad and Stuart Grenfell – SA U16 High Performance Squad.

RUGBY

Grey enjoyed a typically successful rugby season in 2017. The teams with the highest win percentages for the season were the U14C (89%), U14B (82%), 2nd XV (80%) and U16C (80%), teams. It is impossible to mention all the teams that have produced very good sets of results. Our intrepid coaching staff deserve a huge vote of thanks for their efforts. The 1st XV can reflect on a successful and memorable season. Their return of 13 wins from 18 matches was very pleasing, and of our 4 losses, 3 were by less than 4 points. Some of the highlights of the season include impressive victories over DHS (50-17), Maritzburg College (28-19), Paul Roos (22-20), Boland Landbou (18-17) and Selborne College (59-22).

professional rugby players across many franchises, both in South Africa and overseas. Particular mention must be made of current Springbok vice-captain Siya Kolisi and Curwin Bosch, who was fittingly capped during the Rugby Championship match against Argentina in Port Elizabeth. Thanks go to our sponsors, parents and friends of The Grey for all their support during the year - we look forward to seeing you on the stands and touchlines again next season.

SQUASH

The eight top Boys’ and Girls’ schools, all champions of their respective regions, converged on Epworth School in Pietermaritzburg KZN to contest the 2017 Top Schools Championships. This prestigious title singles out the best in South African schools’ squash players and tests them over an intense weekend.

Our players were: (Captain) Murray Schepers, Juandré Venter, Murray Keeton, Gerard Mitchell, Russell Horn and Dean Venter.

Grey High set off on the first day with wins over both St Andrews 5-1 and Michaelhouse 6-0. A 6-0 win over Rondebosch on Saturday morning left them pool winners and a cross-pool play-off against Paarl, runners-up in Pool B. We beat Paarl 6-0. Grey High won by staying unbeaten throughout the tournament and beat Pretoria boys High in the final 5-1.

SWIMMING

We congratulate the following swimmers: Cameron Casali, Jaden Delport, Brandon Chapman and Adriaan Bouwer who took part in the SA National Short Course Gala in Pietermaritzburg. Brandon and Jaden qualified for the B-final 200 Fly and both swam Youth Qualifying times. Jaden came 16th overall and Brandon 15th. Adriaan qualified for the B-finals in 400 Free (15th place); 400 IM and 200 IM (13th). He swam two Senior qualifying times in 200 IM and 400IM and came 7th in the open category for 400IM.

TENNIS

The Grey 1st Tennis team playing under the guise of Wembley B team, won the Nelson Mandela Bay Men’s 1st league. The team was made up of: Josh van Rensburg, Gareth Howell, Joel van Rensburg, Gideon van Der Vyver, Luke Stuart and Matthew Stuart. Two Grey teams travelled to Sun City to play in a Tennis Festival over the last week of the term.

WATERPOLO

The 2017/18 summer Waterpolo season began with the St Andrews Triangular Tournament held in Grahamstown on the 16th September. Our 1sts, U15A and U14A Teams kept up their good performances from earlier in the year by ending the tournament unbeaten, having comfortably won all their games against the hosts and Pearson High. Our 1st Team almost upset the hometown party by drawing the final game against our hosts, with St Andrew’s scoring the equaliser just before the final whistle. The U14A and U15A Teams then embarked on their annual tours to Cape Town to compete in the Rondebosch U14A Tournament and the prestigious Ian Melliar U15A Tournament, hosted by Rondebosch Boys’ High School and Wynberg Boys’ High School respectively. Both tournaments are well respected within the borders of South Africa and we feel privileged to be competing against some of the best polo teams in the country. The results were:

Pool game Westerford won 20-1

Quarter-final Bishops lost 4-12

Semi-final 5-8 RBHS won 5-2

5rd/6th play- off SACS lost 3-5

The U14A side showed some great potential and resilience, but unfortunately their inconsistent performances got the better of them as they lost the Quarter final to Bishops, and then ended 6th after a playoff with SACS. Well done lads!

Grey U15A

Pool game Paul Roos Won 7-3

Pool game Hilton College Won 5-4

Pool game Clifton College Draw 4-4

Pool game Invitational Won 22-2

Quarter-final Rondebosch BHS Won 5-2

Semi- final Bishops Won 3-2

Final Reddam Lost 2-4

The U15A team did Grey proud by reaching the final of the top U15 Waterpolo Tournament in country. There were some pulsating matches with the draw against Clifton and a last second winning goal against Bishops in the semi-final being the most memorable. Tiaan Ingram (goalkeeper) and Reece Hancocks (attacker) were invaluable with their contributions to the team performance, and were justly rewarded by being selected for the tournament side. Both received further accolades when they were announced as ‘best Goalkeeper’ and ‘best Attacker’ at this year’s tournament – well done to them and the whole team on a great performance. Special mention must go to their charismatic coach, Mr Cameron Johnson (2014), who guided this team extremely well through some challenging moments, and can feel unlucky to not have collected the ‘coach of the tournament’ award. Congratulations! During the upcoming spring holiday, our 1st Waterpolo Team travels to Cape Town to participate in the highly competitive SACS Festival. This will effectively be the last tournament for our Matrics. We thank them for their contribution and wish them well with their final year-end studies. Our U15A Team also leaves on Friday 29 September to participate in the Sterrenberg Shield, hosted by Selborne College in East London. We have a good record at this tournament and are confident our boys will continue their good performances and fly The Grey flag with pride. The 4th term will be short and busy with the U14B Team travelling to East London to compete in the Peter Cuff Tournament, hosted by Hudson Park High School. The U14A Team will travel to Bloemfontein to compete in the Grey College ITEC U14 Tournament, whilst the 1st Team (Stayers Team) will be representing Grey at the St Stithian’s Schools’ Festival of Waterpolo in Johannesburg. The season will conclude with a Grey High School Polo Day on 28 October. All our teams will be in action at the Powerade Aquatic Centre, where we hope to host Alexander Road, Woodridge, St Andrew’s and Kingswood.

DRESS AND APPEARANCE

Please ensure that your sons return to school at the start of the final term with a regulation haircut and a clean, freshly-laundered uniform. Thank you to all for your co-operation.

SCHOOL RULES – GENERAL

“Every Grey pupil should constantly remind himself that, both in private and in public, he is responsible for the good name of the school. He must be neat, smart, polite, pleasant and considerate. In the streets, on buses (public transport), in cinemas and any public place, he is being watched. It needs just one thoughtless action, such as slouching with his hands in his pockets, or being loud and rowdy to cause a bad mark against The Grey.

I look forward to welcoming you at the start of the fourth term (Monday 09 October 2017 – Day 5). All Boarders will sign in by 17:00 on Sunday 8 October 2017.
